Hello and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
Today, I am chatting with writer-actress-singer Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, who stars as young Celie in the new musical film version of The Color Purple, and with Fatima Robinson, the famed choreographer who helped create the movie’s spectacular dance pieces.
The Color Purple is based on the Tony-winning musical from Marsha Norman, Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, which was based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Alice Walker. It comes on the heels of a classic 1985 film adaptation from director Steven Spielberg and centers on Celie, a Black Southern woman who struggles to find her identity after suffering abuse from her father and others over the course of 40 years.

In the aftermath of the stunning news that Paramount+ has canceled Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies after a single season, series creator Annabel Oakes is speaking out about the situation.
Oakes confirmed via Instagram that the show will not return for another season.
"In a particularly brutal move, it is also being removed from @paramountplus next and, unless it finds a new home, you will no longer be able to watch it anywhere." she wrote.
"The cast, my creative partners, and I are all devastated at the complete erasure of our show."
The decision to end the series was a bitter pill to swallow for the show's passionate fanbase, but it's difficult knowing that shows are being erased from existence due to content write-downs.
"Thank you to our beautiful fans," Oakes enthused.

How do you even begin to reboot something as iconic as “Grease”? It’s no easy task, but “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” proves that it’s certainly possible.
The hit Paramount+ series takes audiences back to the 1950s — even further back than the original 1978 film did. Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson fell in love in the summer of 1958, but “Rise of the Pink Ladies” begins in 1954 as the girl gang that Bettie Rizzo would eventually rule is attempting to reverse their fortunes and rise to prominence in the halls of Rydell High School. The series expands on the lore that made “Grease” so beloved, and adds origin stories for several of the film’s most popular songs — while introducing a new set of tunes that are modern classics in their own right.

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies" star Tricia Fukuhara takes our call.
One thing about Tricia Fukuhara is that she can hustle. Before the actor was cast as Nancy in Paramount+'s "Rise of the Pink Ladies," which released its first season finale on June 1, she was working odd jobs in Los Angeles. "I had three jobs at the time," she tells Popsugar of the period when she was auditioning for the role. And she was literally on a shift at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter when she got the news she'd landed the part.
"It was my frog choir job at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter," she says.

Director-choreographer Jamal Sims and “Grease” go together like “rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong.” Now, he’s channeled his lifelong love of the film as choreographer of the Paramount+ musical series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.” A prequel to the movie, the series shares the origin story of Rydell High’s infamous Pink Ladies, who initiate a wave of change that ripples through the high school in 1954. But Sims was initially hesitant to join the project.
“‘Grease’ means so much to so many people,” Sims told IndieWire. “It was when I read the script by our lovely, brilliant showrunner, Annabel Oakes, I thought, ‘This is not what people are going to expect.’”
The script included brand-new characters (though keep an eye out for younger versions of two future Pink Ladies) challenging societal norms of the 1950s, as well as new songs written by Justin Tranter, who has worked with Justin Bieber,...

“Everybody on this planet, I believe, has seen the original ‘Grease,'” says Jaala Leis Wanless, the hair department head for the new Paramount+ prequel series to the film, “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.” “It is an icon of musical film. When I realized that I got the show, first I was elated, second I was scared because there’s a huge fanbase for the original ‘Grease’ and for the whole franchise. I really hope I do this justice.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Photo Credit: Eduardo Araquel/Paramount+ It’s been nearly 45 years since Grease first debuted in theaters … and 41 years since Grease 2 completely flopped in theaters. Given that so much time had passed, it may seem a little surprising that Paramount+ has revived the franchise with a new series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. In fact, the idea came as a shock to the woman who is now the series’ showrunner, Annabel Oakes. When we spoke to her about the show, she told us how her feelings about the concept swung from a firm “no” to an enthusiastic “yes.” (Click on the media bar below to hear Annabel Oakes) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads...

“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” might not spotlight characters from the original 1978 film like Didi Conn’s Frenchy or Stockard Channing’s Rizzo, but it does set the stage for their impending reign on Rydell High.
Though tampering with any reiteration of the cultural cornerstone that is “Grease” has proven unsuccessful in the past, showrunner Annabel Oakes was clearly up for the challenge. So, how does one begin to cast the characters for a prequel television series based on the beloved movie? Casting directors Leigh Ann Smith and Conrad Woolfe of Indigo Casting accredit showrunner Oakes’ clear vision.
“[Oakes] had lived in that world with these characters for so long,” Smith tells Variety. Adds Woolfe, “We didn’t necessarily feel pressure [casting these characters] because Oakes had done such an incredible job of expanding the universe in her imagination before we even came to the table to do the casting.”

Just how close is the new Paramount+ prequel series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” connected to the beloved 1978 film “Grease?” Pretty close, as it turns out, considering two characters from “Grease” make appearances in the TV show.
Now streaming on Paramount+, “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” takes place four years before the events of “Grease,” before the T-Birds are the coolest guys in school, and before the Pink Ladies even exist. The story centers on Jane (Marisa Davila), Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells), Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso) and Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara), a group of misfits at Rydell, who eventually just lean into the reputations they’ve been given.
They’re the ones who pave the way for the future Pink Ladies we know and love: Rizzo, Frenchie, Marty and Jan. But, as it happens, two of those ladies do get an appearance in this show, because one has a direct...

Even in the streaming wars era, with programmers gambling on new concepts in order to gain and retain subscribers, schedules aren’t brimming with musicals. That’s because TV musicals are hard. And as a general rule, they rarely stick — even when well executed.
Sure, for every “Galavant” and “Eli Stone” there’s a “Glee,” a “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” or a “Smash,” which was a delightful disaster for two seasons. But even “Glee” had its own set of pacing and storyline problems after the surprising first season. “Smash” failed to catch fire in the ratings despite its cult following, and “Zoey” barely held on during its two-season (and a movie) run. As for Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!,” the proof will be in the (corn) pudding as to whether it can sustain its momentum when Season 2 debuts this month.
Part of the problem is that TV musicals are divisive. You...

“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” music producer and songwriter Justin Tranter says their prolific career actually started with a passion for musicals.
“Musicals are why I started making music as a kid. Even though I was in a rock band and now I make pop music, musicals are why I started making music in the first place,” the Grammy-nominated songwriter told Variety at the Paramount+ series’ premiere Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Tranter has worked with Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, the Chicks, Leon Bridges, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, just to name a few.
After “fighting hard” to join “Rise of the Pink Ladies” and providing demos for showrunner Annabel Oakes, the two then teamed up with choreographer Jamal Sims for the series. Along with some co-writers, Tranter wrote and produced 30 original songs for the 10-episode season.

Review: My expectations for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies were very low. I have an appreciation for the classic feature film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, as well as for the Michelle Pfieffer-led sequel. The years have not been kind to some elements from Grease, but that has not stopped people from attempting stage productions and even a maligned live version on Fox. Now, as the streaming wars continue to mine their intellectual property for any potential series, the Paramount+ prequel series Rise of the Pink Ladies aims to correct some of the less diverse elements of Grease for a new generation of fans.

“Grease” fans hungry for a cool slider or hopelessly devoted to fries will have a chance to indulge via a pop-up version of the film franchise’s Frosty Palace on Thursday, April 6, and Friday, April 7. Paramount+ has partnered with Popsugar to take over Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood for the promotion, timed to the upcoming launch of the new series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.”
It’s unclear whether Danny Zuko’s preferred order (a double Polar Burger with everything and a cherry soda with chocolate ice cream) will be available, but the two-day interactive event will include 1950s-era music and decor, as well as “twists on familiar diner fare” and photo moments. “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” merchandise will also be given away and customized on site.

Paramount+’s Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies trailer teases it was their bad girl reputations that brought the first generation of Pink Ladies together. The season one cast also includes Shanel Bailey as Hazel, Madison Thompson as Susan, Johnathan Nieves as Richie, Jason Schmidt as Buddy, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper as Wally, and Jackie Hoffman as Asst. Principal McGee.
Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will premiere on April 6, 2023. New episodes of the 10-episode season will follow on subsequent Thursdays.

Before there was Sandy and Danny, there was — well, Rydell High was still pretty musical. But the Pink Ladies were just finding their way. In Paramount+’s new series, fans are set to see the beginning of Rydell’s coolest female clique, and how it was originally created specifically for the outcasts.
The newest trailer for the series, set to premiere on the streamer in April, came during Monday morning’s episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” accompanied by the four original Pink Ladies themselves.
In the footage, we see the women who would become the inaugural Pink Ladies getting bullied, shamed for their sexual activities and even denied membership from the T-Birds, solely based on gender — and they’ve had enough. Watch it below.
“Everyone already thinks we’re such bad girls,” Jane (Marisa Davila) says, before being corrected that, “We’re not girls, we’re ladies.” And thus,...

Are you ready to witness the rise of the Pink Ladies?
Paramount+ debuted the full-length trailer for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies this week, and it features all the singing and dancing you'd expect from a project set in the Grease universe.
The clip debuted Tuesday on The Drew Barrymore Show during "Drew's News" with Drew Barrymore and co-host Ross Matthews, along with special appearances by cast members Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara.
Truthfully, the series looks like a movie, and the plot seems like something that can be told in around two hours, so unless there are some changes along the way, the show might not stand the test of time.
The Grease franchise -- sans Grease 2 and those pesky live editions -- are near and dear to fans, so expectations will be high to set a show in that universe.

It's hard to imagine a time before the Pink Ladies ruled the hallways of Rydell High in 1978's "Grease," but get ready to see the origin story behind the rule-breaking girl gang in Paramount+'s new prequel series, "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies."
On Jan. 9, the forthcoming show - which takes place four years before the iconic "Grease" movie that starred John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John - shared its first teaser trailer featuring a cast of new characters, including "four fed-up outcasts," aka the original Pink Ladies - Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara), Jane (Marisa Davila), Olivia (Cheyenne Wells), and Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso) - whose status-quo defying attitudes "change Rydell High forever."
While it seems pretty certain that the original "Grease" cast won't make any appearances in the upcoming series, nor will it focus on the love story of Travolta and Newton-John's Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson,...

Paramount+’s new young adult drama series “School Spirits” introduces viewers to the afterlife for students at Split River High School in its new trailer.
“What was her name again?” asks student Chloe in the opening of the trailer. Chloe is played by Alison Thorton. “Maggie somebody,” another student replies. “Maggie” is Maddie, a teen girl — played by Peyon List — who is investigating her peculiar disappearance while on the other side of the living human population.
During her investigation, “Maddie goes on a crime-solving journey as she adjusts to high school in the afterlife, but the closer she gets to uncovering the truth, the more secrets and lies she discovers,” reads a description of the show. Apparently, "Grease" is still the word at Paramount+ because an all-new show based on the hit stage musical and its beloved 1978 film adaptation is heading to the streaming service later this year after originally being set up at HBO Max in 2019. But rather than follow the star-crossed students made famous by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, the 10-episode series will focus on the origins of the Pink Ladies, the girl gang made up of Stockard Channing, Dinah Manoff, Jamie Donnelly, and Didi Conn in the first movie (and led by an up-and-coming Michelle Pfeiffer in the underrated sequel).

Sound the bell because school is in session, and the original girl gang, the Pink Ladies, are ready “to do bad to be good!” Parmount+ dropped the Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies teaser trailer on Monday, marking the return of the Rydell High School’s peppy, prissy, and prodigious Pink Ladies. They’re here to rule the school and dance their way into your heart again in Paramount’s new series.
Set in the mid-50s, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies revolves around Jane (Marisa Davila), Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells), Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso), and Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara). The story takes place four years before the original film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and focuses on a group of outcast women who refuse to conform to society’s norms. Proudly displaying themes of feminism, diversity, and independence, the Pink Ladies strive for equality while busting sweet moves on the streets.

In the teaser trailer for the series, which stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Tricia Fukuhara and Ari Notartomas, also dropped on Monday, we see the girls being advised by Jackie Hoffman’s assistant principal, “Be careful with whom you associate. A lady’s reputation is all she has.”
That advice goes unheeded, as the Pink Ladies decide, “Sometimes, you gotta be bad to do good,” before declaring, “Things are about to get wild.”

Paramount+ is hoping its latest series will be the one that you want. Like greased lightnin’ (go greased lightnin’), the “Grease” prequel series “Rise of the Pink Ladies” is racing to the streamer on April 6, in time for you to binge it over those summer nights eventually. Paramount+ announced the news from their January 9 presentation for the Television Critic’s Association Winter press tour and, because there are worse things they could do, released a short teaser for the teen musical series to accompany it.
The series is a prequel to “Grease,” the 1978 film itself adapted from the 1971 stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Directed by Randal Kleiser, the movie was led by John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John as star-crossed greaser Danny Zuko and good girl Sandy Olsson, but the film became a cultural sensation (raking in 366.2 million at the global box office) thanks in part to the memorable supporting cast,...

During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s 2023 winter press tour, Paramount+ debuted new teaser art for the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which premieres on Feb. 16. During the panel about the series however, the team behind the series didn’t seem so sure that this would be the end.
“Who knows?” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said when asked about the ending of the series, with star Patrick Stewart saying that if the show could “maintain the work quality” of the first three seasons, he would be open to reappearing. He also noted that the storylines of the final season intentionally “leave doors open.”
The series stars Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, who he played for seven seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd also star.
