Srikanth
Starring Rajkummar Rao,
Directed by Tushar Hiranandani
Normally, biopics in Hindi cinema struggle to cram in as much eulogy as possible. Tushar Hiranandani’s Srikanth is different. It is a warm and affectionate look at a truelife hero. But it avoids being a visual hagiography.
Rajkummar Rao in a performance that he can show to his unborn children humanizes the blind entrepreneur Srikanth Bolla without denuding the character of any of his blemishes.
Into the rarest-of-rare category falls the visually impaired visionary Srikanth Bolla whose lifestory is so inspiring, it would take a devastatingly doltish director to destroy the dream. Happily, Tushar Hiranandani is not an inept filmmaker, though he could have taken Srikant Bolla’s story much further than it actually goes in this heartfelt love story: the love of a insurmountably disadvantaged man for life.
This existential ebullience comes shining through in Rajkumar Rao’s buoyant performance.

Biopics are a rage in several film industries. Both the West and the Hindi film industries are tapping into stories of human beings who have achieved extraordinary things for themselves and society. Bradley Cooper in Maestro, Randeep Hooda in Swatantra Veer Savarkar, Diljit Dosanjh in Amar Singh Chamkila, and Sara Ali Khan in Ae Watan mere Watan are some of the stars who’ve recently performed in biopics. Adding to this list is Srikanth, starring Rajkumar Rao as Srikanth Bolla, who happens to be India’s visually challenged entrepreneur who set up industries that offered jobs only to physically challenged men and women. Directed by Tushar Hiranandani, the movie chronicles the life and struggles of Srikanth Bolla as he strives to be treated equally and not as a person who forever needs sympathy.

Tushar Hiranandani’s sophomore, Srikanth, is loosely based on the life of Srikanth Bolla, the visually impaired industrialist who founded Bollant Industries. The protagonist’s disability failed to affect his professional and personal life. He did not let his limitations become an obstacle to fulfilling his seemingly unattainable aspirations. The inspiring story alters our perspective on individuals with disabilities and compels us not to undermine their ability to achieve their potential when provided with ample support. It depicts the remarkable grit and resilience of a man with enduring confidence as he explores his ideas, his emotional life, and struggles with a society that considers him a feeble being. Such attributes could have made the film impressive if the filmmaker knew how to transcend the pitfalls of a typical biopic by not adhering to a very conventional approach to its material. Though the film has a lightness that most dramas taking...

Overtly, Kirtima from Killer Soup is the other woman. She’s meant to be the antagonist in some ways, especially in Swathi’s eyes. However, she’s just a girl trying to make it in this cruel world, you know? Kirtima has all the qualities that are considered admirable in a woman. She’s intelligent, ambitious, good with numbers, knows how to cook, she’s got the looks, of course, and she’s got a hidden talent! Kalaripayattu. Okay, well, it’s not really a hidden talent; everyone knows she performs it; I just felt like gift-wrapping it. I suppose since Swathi has Umesh, Kirtima might’ve been the right match for Prabhu. While Swathi brought out the worst in the man—those burps were so annoying!—Kirtima brought out a more caring side of him. I might be going off on a tangent, and of course, it’s just an affair and whatnot,...

While Killer Soup follows the story of Swathi, a woman who wants to start her own restaurant, I believe there are many parallels between her and Appu’s story. Yes, it’s a murder mystery where a dozen people die all around Swathi, seemingly just by existing near her. It’s also about her passionate ambition to open this restaurant that she’s been dreaming of for years. In an ideal world, by the time we get to the timeline of the show, Swathi should’ve been well into running her restaurant, seeing as she had been married for 20 years and her husband is the reason she’s come into money and luxury. While he claims he’s given her everything she’s ever wanted, he’s never bothered helping her achieve her biggest dream (waste fellow). Now Appu is Arvind’s daughter. We can assume she’s at least 25 years younger than Swathi,...

Killer Soup is Netflix’s latest in its piping roster of thriller shows (as well as shows about food). The Indian show is an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors-style story that is fun and fast-paced. At its heart, the show is about Swathi Shetty, a wife, a mother, and a woman who aspires to start her own restaurant in the center of her town, Mainjur. She’s wanted this since she can remember, and was promised by her husband that it would eventually happen for her; however, 20 years have passed and it’s all still the same. For now, Swathi’s story is quite a common one in the Indian household scenario. You’d imagine she would’ve let go of her dream with all these years gone by, but she’s very hopeful still. Her journey has only just begun, and something tremendously bizarre is about to happen that...

Netflix’s big New Year Indian release is Konkona Sen Sharma and Manoj Bajpayee’s Killer Soup. This eat-the-rich thriller-dramedy is a fun and engaging show about a couple that gets dragged into a comedy of errors murder mystery. Swathi and Prabhu are a happily married, rich couple living in the small town of Mainjur, Tamil Nadu. This is a family that thrives on deceit, and all they really care about is who has the upper hand. Swathi’s big dream is to have her very own restaurant someday. 20 years have passed, and this dream still remains a dream, despite the luxurious lifestyle her husband has been maintaining. The Abhishek Chaubey directorial is a unique blend of South and North. A Hindi-language show based in Tamil Nadu that brings out the essence of Indian indie-thriller with a comedic element. It’s been a while since we saw something like this,...

Killer Soup is India’s answer to the “eat the rich,” “let’s use food as a metaphor for life” situation happening across world cinema. In the last year, I’ve seen food shows in a dozen languages that fall under the morbid-thriller genre that we all love so much. Given the situation, India needed to buck up, and here we are with the Konkona Sen Sharma-Manoj Bajpayee starrer Killer Soup. Prabhakar Shetty, aka Prabhu, and Swathi Shetty are a happily married couple who live in Mainjur, Tamil Nadu. They’re a fairly rich family with a son who’s moved out for college. The show begins with Swathi making what seems to be her delectable “paya soup.” However, immediately after receiving a bowl of it, Prabhu is disgusted. He discards it when Swathi isn’t looking, and she steals some money from his wallet simultaneously. This scene depicts their relationship perfectly.

Actress Konkona Sen Sharma, who takes on the intricate role of Swathi Shetty in the dark comedy thriller series ‘Killer Soup’, said it has challenged her in the best ways, and allowed her to explore the grey-ness of this character.
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the series promises a compelling blend of love, lust, thrill, and suspense, seasoned with dark humour that sets it apart.
At the heart of this culinary drama is Swathi Shetty, a woman in her early forties portrayed by Konkona.
Talking about the same, Konkana said: “Swathi is a character I’ve embraced with open arms – a woman driven by an unwavering determination to create not just the best paya soup but a life she can call her own. Inherently caring and loving, her complexities reveal a character who has served others selflessly, and, in turn, has dutifully taken care of her family.”
