Theatrical movies truly came back in 2023. Despite a major strike and the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic, audiences returned in droves to watch big releases. From the twin tentpoles of Barbie and Oppenheimer to the more niche faves such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and John Wick: Chapter 4, the cinematic slate of 2023 gave fans of every variety a reason to get back to the cinemas.
Moviemakers hope to continue this trend in 2024, and the key strategy seems to be sequels, prequels, and remakes. Some of these movies come from the artists who captured audiences’ hearts in the first place, while others come from fresh faces, hoping to infuse a familiar tale with new energy.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is on the way next year from 20th Century Studios, a brand new movie that takes place “many years after” the events of War for the Planet of the Apes. Along with a new image, below, unveiled by EW comes the tease that this new entry has the potential to launch a new multi-movie saga.
Director Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will release in theaters May 24, 2024.
The new film is “set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

Wes Ball, the director of the newest installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise, titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, recently revealed why Andy Serkis won’t be coming back in the upcoming entry. “We talked about it, for sure. Like, ‘Could you play another ape character?’” Wes Ball said. “I entertained that thought for a long time, because I thought it would be f***ing cool. And Matt [Reeves] would always say, ‘Andy is the best actor I’ve ever worked with.’” At the end of the day, Ball decided that Serkis’ performance in the Planet of the Apes trilogy “was just too iconic,” but added that there’s a chance he could appear in future movies.
Entertainment Weekly has revealed new images while Ball unveils details about his newest film. While Caesar’s story as the Ape Revolutionary has ended, a new primate character takes up the mantle.

After the newest "Planet of the Apes" trilogy wrapped up in 2017 with director Matt Reeves' stunning, Biblical epic "War for the Planet of the Apes," fans were left with two pressing questions. One, why the heck wasn't Andy Serkis ever recognized by the Oscars for his genuinely award-worthy performance as Caesar? Secondly, would the actor ever return for future movies down the line, despite the fact that Caesar meets a heartbreaking but poignant end by the conclusion of the film? There's precedent within this franchise for actors once again taking the lead role in subsequent sequels as a different character, of course -- look no further than Roddy McDowall starring in the original "Planet of the Apes" and "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" as the chimpanzee Cornelius before coming back in "Conquest" and eventually "Battle" to play the role of Cornelius' son and Caesar.

When Wes Ball came up with his idea for what a new Planet Of The Apes film could be, he distilled it down to a handy one-line pitch: “:a[Apocalypto]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/apocalypto-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} with apes”. The acclaimed 2006 film – all spoken in the Mayan language, and depicting a ferocious trip through a dangerous jungle in early 1500s Yucatán – is known for its propulsive energy, pulse-pounding action, and affecting emotional story. Combine that with sci-fi’s long-running action-adventure saga, and you get :a[Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-trailer-has-apes-ruling-the-world/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} – setting the stage for a wild new adventure.
Once the initial notion to invoke Apocalypto hit Ball, he “had this flood of ideas,” he :a[tells Empire]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-covers-revealed-world-exclusive/' target='blank'...

If you’re anything like me, the two Ewok movies were always that piece of Star Wars media you meant to get around to at some point but never did. I remember first reading about the existence of these movies in a Star Wars action figure guide, yet even as a Star Wars obsessed kid, I never bothered to seek them out. They weren’t exactly easy to come by for a while but when they dropped on DVD in 2004… I still never got around to it.
Yeah, it was part of Star Wars lore, but both films were about the Ewoks, no one’s favorite Star Wars race of aliens. Nowadays the made-for-tv films are struck from canon, if they really had a place there to begin with. Yet two years ago, when out of nowhere Disney+ added both of the films, I finally decided to give them a watch.

‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ embarks on a daring journey nearly 300 years after Caesar’s time. This isn’t just a sequel; it’s the dawn of a new trilogy in the Apes universe. Directed by Wes Ball, the film introduces us to an era where Caesar’s legacy has become a distant echo.
Central to this new story is Noa, a young ape hero portrayed by Owen Teague. Unlike the expected follow-up focusing on Caesar’s son, Noa’s narrative is unique. He’s a character unaware of Caesar’s past. ‘Noa has no idea who that is,’ Teague reveals, highlighting a journey of discovery and understanding about what Caesar’s legacy truly means.

When :a[Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/rise-planet-apes-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} set out to unfold the, well, rise of the planet of the apes back in 2011, it did so through the eyes of Caesar – an empathetic primate brought to vivid life by Andy Serkis’ astonishing performance. Through the course of that trilogy, audiences witnessed Caesar’s entire life span, his own evolution coinciding with the simian revolution spreading across the globe. So, with the arrival of :a[Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-adventure-quest-movie-little-bit-of-star-wars-exclusive/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Caesar’s son, Cornelius, would be at the centre of the action for the next saga. The Maze Runner trilogy director Wes Ball’s addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is set to reach theatres on May 24, 2024 – and in an interview with Empire magazine, Ball revealed that he has drawn inspiration from the likes of Star Wars and Apocalypto when putting together his Apes movie.
According to Empire, Ball is making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes “an adventure movie, tonally distinct from the darker impulses of the recent Apes trilogy, while hoping to retain what made those films so special.” The director said, “When I first started on it, I said, ‘I feel like Apes needs a little bit of Star Wars’. It’s all still very grounded in reality, but it is essentially a quest narrative. Our main character – the young, impressionable Noa [Owen Teague] – meets characters along the way and becomes awakened as...

Nobody needs a refresher course on just how influential the original "Planet of the Apes" movies were, but the most recent trilogy of movies has become a popular pick among cinephiles as one of the most underappreciated blockbuster franchises in recent years. The incredible VFX work feels seamless, Andy Serkis' performance as the ape leader Caesar is nothing short of Oscar-worthy, and the dystopian story threaded throughout the trilogy stands tall as a fantastic addition to the lore of the sci-fi series. So when word first came down that "The Maze Runner" director Wes Ball would attempt to pick up where they left off with "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," fans seemed torn between excitement and healthy skepticism.
Consider any fears long gone in the wake of the film's first teaser trailer, which hinted at another epic adventure taking place generations after the events of "War for the Planet of the Apes.

Inspired since childhood by the Heisei Kamen Rider series, Yoshiki Matsumoto held a superhero show and made a movie for his high school festival, and found himself becoming fascinated by the world of film. After studying filmmaking under Gakuryu Ishii at Kobe Design University Department of Image Arts, he has made films while working full-time. He moved from Nara to Tokyo in 2022 to form the filmmaking unit Setagaya Sensemans, where he has worked on various films, mainly as an editor. “Alien's Daydream” is his feature debut, for which he also holds the roles of writer, editor, production designer and cinematographer.

It is a paradox worthy of Zeno himself that significant dumbing-down is necessary in order to make tales of extraordinary genius comprehensible to us lay audiences. But in her own attempt at grandly unifying these opposing poles, French director Anna Novion splits the difference so often she delivers in “Marguerite’s Theorem,” a movie riddled with cliché that plunges right past comprehensible into painfully, pedantically predictable — even to those of us who stumble when subtracting one two-digit number from another. Its heroine loves math because through it she can “put order on infinity,” but “Marguerite’s Theorem” is proof as incontrovertible as Andrew Wiles’ 1994 Fermat solution, that one can have too much order.

The burnout associated with gifted kid syndrome — the crushing realization that, after constant praise and validation as a child, you’re not as special as everybody told you that you were — has become a self-diagnosed internet ailment of the most annoying people you know, determined to blame their obnoxious high standards on their parents and teachers. It’s a well-worn screen trope, whether through countless “yep, that’s me, you probably are wondering how I ended up here”–style biopics of real-life geniuses to the Rachel Berry brand of insufferable know-it-alls.
