If you recognize Jake Abel, you might find yourself with the unconscious urge to punch him. The 25-year-old actor has been working in movies and TV for a decade, but with blond hair and good looks he's inevitably wound up playing the bully, in The Lovely Bones and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (and the upcoming sequel) and the short-lived attempt at another sci-fi teen series, I Am Number Four. In another sci-fi tinged movie aimed at teens, though, Abel finally gets the chance to show his softer side, playing Ian O'Shea in The Host. As one of the few humans left alive after an alien species has colonized earth, Ian is as shocked as anyone when Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) arrives at humanity's last hideout while taken over by Wanderer, the alien Soul now living inside Melanie's body. But Ian's even more shocked when he starts to fall for...

Considering her trio of Ya fantasy-romance novels are basically responsible for the careers of Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, and at the very least Kristen Stewart's elevated profile, Stephenie Meyer knows a thing or two about matching actors with roles.
On the phone from Vancouver, the Twilight series author reveals that she was very hands-on when it came to casting the lead roles in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of her 2008 sci-fi book "The Host", which includes Max Irons as Jared Howe, Jake Abel as Ian O'Shea and Saoirse Ronan as Melanie Stryder and her alien host. But Meyer initially thought the Irish actress wasn't old enough for the part.
"I said, I think that she's too young.' They said, go watch Hanna and then let's talk about it. And I watched Hanna and then I was like, 'Oh, I totally get it. We have to have her.'"...

With The Host set to be released in theatres on March 29th, of course thoughts are turning to whether or not we have a potential franchise here, and in a recent interview author Stephenie Meyer shed a bit more light on things.
Meyer told The AP that she is already working on a sequel to the 2008 novel she began writing as an escape from the editing of Eclipse, the third book in her Twilight vampire saga. And now that it, too, is reaching the big screen, she has more books in mind.
"Once you've created characters that have life to them, unless you kill them all, you know where their stories go. You're always aware of what happens next," Meyer said. "I've got outlines for the next books. I would hope that this would be a three-book arc, but we'll see."

Jake Abel, who portrays Ian O'Shea in the adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's The Host, has admitted to initially being a little intimidated by the part. So, what was it that got him a little nervous at first? Speaking to MTV, he explained that he was a bit intimidated by both of the central ladies involved with the project - Stephenie Meyer and Saoirse Ronan. "I believe Stephenie had done a couple of small films that were relatively successful, and I had heard of those," he joked of her massive Twilight successes, "and I didn't know too much about The Host until I heard about the audition. So before I went in to actually read with Saoirse, I ran into Stephenie out in the lobby, and if that wasn't intimidating enough, I hadn't seen Saoirse in ... four years? T ....

Adding to the character posters already available from The Host, Stephenie Meyer herself has kicked off "Ian Week" with this new one sheet of Jake Abel as Ian O'Shea, and she shared a little authorial insight into how the character came to be what he is in the story. Over on her blog, she wrote: Ian has been masterfully brought to life by the talented Jake Abel, with all of his complex choices and emotional evolutions. (It's really too bad Jake is so very unattractive, right? But his audition was amazing, and we decided to overlook his shortcomings in favor of his skill.) One of my favorite things about Ian-the-character was that he was never meant to be more than a second tier bad guy. He was supposed to stay in the shadows behind his brother, Kyle, and be menacing. Glower and shake his fist, that kind of thing. But...

The Host's leading trio - Saoirse Ronan (Wanderer and Melanie Stryder), Max Irons (Jared Howe) and Jake Abel (Ian O'Shea) - hit up Monday's premiere for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 in support of Stephenie Meyer, and while there they spoke candidly with MTV about the possibility that The Host will reach Twilight levels of success. "You can't expect it too much because it may not happen," Ronan said. "I mean, this is such a massive scale for Twilight because Twilight is so so huge, and I think that's something that can't even really enter into your head because it is so massive. But it is mad though. But it's great that all these people have been out here since Thursday because they love the book and they love the films so much th ...

You will be one of us. I'm always a little partial to anything with a sci-fi tinge, even if it's another Stephanie Meyer adaptation. But I was finally caught by RopeofSilicon's headline for these images: "Two New Pictures from 'The Host' Have Me Digging for Plot Points." Indeed — what the heck is this even about? Open Road Films has released another two photos, via EW.com, for Andrew Niccol's adaptation of The Host, starring Saoirse Ronan as Melanie Stryder, and Jake Abel as Ian O'Shea. If you've read the novel, you know the story. It's a romantic character drama about aliens that have taken over minds, while bodies remain intact. You can see the two new images of Ian in full below. "Ian has only known this alien," Abel explains. "[It's] a love box, between my feelings for Wanda, the alien inside the body, and Jared’s feelings for Melanie,...

Open Road Films has debuted a pair of new pictures from the upcoming film The Host, based on the novel by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer and starring Saoirse Ronan. The big pitch of the film is that humans have become hosts for some sort of alien invaders and their minds are taken over while their bodies remain intact. Melanie (Ronan), one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, but Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, is confronted with the fact Melanie isn't ready to relinquish possession of her mind. What a silly girl right? So, that's it in a nut shell, but the thing about these new pics is how it's our first look at Jake Abel (who?) as Ian O'Shea (again, who?). With no information sent to me as to who this Ian character is I went searching and man-oh-man is it a doozy of an issue.

It seems like we're getting a heavy dose of Stephenie Meyer this week. Yesterday saw 10 new images from Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part II arrive courtesy of Entertainment Weekly and today, we get a couple of first look images of Jake Abel as Ian O'Shea in the other Meyer book being adapted to film, The Host. In the book, O'Shea is one of the rebel humans whose prejudice against the souls has driven him to a point in time where almost kills Wanda. He eventually has a change of heart and believes that Wanderer is an innocent girl who does not deserve to be punished simply because she inhabits Melanie's body. For people who haven't read the novel, no part of those last two sentences made any sense, but you can catch up on the various characters and storylines in...

It's a good day to be a Stephenie Meyer fan. Earlier today, we shared a few new photos from the upcoming second part of the final installment to The Twilight Saga, and now we have a couple of new looks at the feature adaptation of Meyer's non-vampire related novel The Host. Check them out ahead and get to know Jake Abel's character Ian O'Shea a little bit better. The Host takes place on earth after aliens have invaded the planet and inhabited the bodies and minds of most of the humans. The story follows Melanie Stryder and the "Soul" that's taken over her body, Wanderer. While Wanderer is in control, Melanie hasn't exactly left and Wanderer soon comes to learn the emotional challenges that come with being a human. She and Melanie eventually team up to seek out Melanie's family, who are hiding somewhere in the desert. If you...

While it's still more than a year away from hitting theaters, the teaser trailer for the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's The Host has arrived via Yahoo Movies. Saoirse Ronan stars as Melanie Stryder, a human whose body fuses with a soul known as The Wanderer. Together they attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth. The movie co-stars Diane Kruger as The Seeker, Jake Abel as Ian O'Shea and William Hurt as Jeb Stryder. None of them appear in this teaser, with the exception of Ronan at the very end. We'll wait and see if Open Road Films, the joint distribution arm of AMC and Regal Theaters decides to promote the movie at this year's Comic-Con as it certainly has a sci-fi angle to it. the film is set to hit theaters on March 29, 2013.
