Though Tom Pelphrey was already a two-time Daytime Emmy-winner for his work in the daytime drama “Guiding Light” and had been working steadily on stage and screen, his move to “Ozark’s” third season took his career to a new level. He blazed onscreen as Ben Davis, the bipolar brother of Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney), and seemingly shot to stardom overnight. It’s been a busy couple of years for the actor both professionally and personally — his partner Kaley Cuoco gave birth to their first child, a daughter, on March 30. And now Pelphrey is starring in “Love and Death,” HBO Max’s limited series from David E. Kelley about Texas housewife Candy Montgomery (played by Elisabeth Olsen), who killed her friend Betty Gore in 1980 after being confronted with evidence of Montgomery’s affair with Gore’s husband. (Montgomery pleaded self-defense and was acquitted of murder.) Pelphrey plays Don Crowder, a...

As costume designer on “Judy,” the biopic about Judy Garland, Jany Temime kept one criteria in mind. “My question was, ‘What would Judy wear for that scene?’ That how I approached it,” says Temime, who also wanted to portray the difference between “the real Judy and the performer Judy.”
But instead of using replicas of the actor-singer’s iconic ensembles, Temime opted to create designs inspired by Garland’s wardrobe. To do so, Temime analyzed every look to understand why Garland chose it.
“She loved clothes. She has been working with the best designers in the world from the moment she entered Hollywood,’ explains Temime. “She was a woman with a huge fashion background. She’s a performer who wore the right thing to give the right impression.”
Filming in London allowed the costume designer to source Arabic, Indian and African prints to build the costumes and paint the picture of a strong woman.

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.’
In the battle of the sequels Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil beat Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap last weekend but neither was a match for the third frame of Warner Bros’ juggernaut Joker.
Launching on 60 screens, Universal’s Judy Garland biopic Judy hit a high note while Cinema Live’s Billy Connolly: The Sex Life of Bandages did not generate many laughs or dollars and Icon’s mystery thriller Strange But True bombed.
It was a soft trading weekend at cinemas as the top 20 titles harvested $14.2 million, down 27 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Todd Phillips’ Joker rang up $4.3 million despite falling by 41 per cent, hoisting its total to $28.5 million. The WB/Village Roadshow/Bron Studios’ production has amassed $738.5 million worldwide: $247.2 million in the Us and $491.3 million internationally, where it now ranks as the fourth biggest DC comics-based blockbuster of all time.

Did the death of Judy Garland trigger the Stonewall Riots and the birth of the gay liberation movement as is suggested in the new biopic “Judy”? The truth is, it depends who you ask.
To this day, the legendary singer’s death less than a week before the 1969 riots continues to be recognized as a considerable factor in the gay uprising that led to 13 arrests and many injuries at the gay bar Stonewall Inn in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Garland’s adoration in the gay community was of mythical proportions decades before her death from an accidental overdose of barbiturates on June 22, 1969. “She is an Elvis for homosexuals,” Barry Walters wrote in a 1998 article in The Advocate. He, like many, many others, believe her tragic end “may have” helped to ignite the five-night Stonewall rebellion.
Not many businesses welcomed openly gay people in the ’50s and ’60s. The...

Renée Zellweger may be earning praise for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy, but the real-life story behind the Wizard of Oz star is much more tragic.
Garland dominated movie screens with roles in The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis and the Easter Parade, but the star struggled with substance abuse and body image issues since her breakout at the age of 16.
The new film on her life, Judy, follows Garland from 1968 to 1969 as she performs a series of sold-out concerts in London while struggling to cope with depression and her addictions.

Contrary to the biopic “Judy,” the first encounter between Judy Garland and her future husband Mickey Deans was in no way a “meet-cute” at a party. In fact, their first encounter was decidedly unglamorous.
As the film tells it, Garland (played by Renee Zellwegger) was invited to a party by her daughter Liza Minnelli (Gemma-Leah Devereux), who, by that time, had already wowed audiences in a chip-off-the-old-block way with a Tony-winning performance in “Flora the Red Menace.” We see Garland and Deans (Finn Wittrock) lock eyes across the crowded room, his approach, flirtation, flying sparks, and so on.
But the truth is, there was no happenin’ Hollywood party, no instant chemistry, not even a magical moment when their eyes met. The truth: They first met when he delivered drugs to her hotel room in the middle of the night.

Renee Zellweger gives a knockout performance as the legendary Judy Garland, in a biopic set in her later years. as the star struggles to make a living, battles alcoholism and self-destructive behavior and tries to keep her two young children close. Judy takes a sympathetic view of the star in her twilight years, a difficult time when she was still famous enough to draw crowds but when her voice was fading and her reputation for unreliability made it hard to find work.

All you need to win an Oscar is the right compelling narrative, and chameleon Renée Zellweger has a good one. Raised by old-fashioned European parents in Texas, where she excelled at sports before discovering drama, she’s had three Oscar nominations and one win. Her first two were for Best Actress in 2001 romantic comedy “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” and in 2002, for Best-Picture winning musical “Chicago.” By her third go-round in 2004, she was overdue: Zellweger took home the Best Supporting Actress statuette for her twangy, gun-totin’ North Carolina farmer in “Cold Mountain.”
Fifteen years later, the 50-year-old Zellweger has a new story to tell. At her Telluride Film Festival tribute, she choked up as she watched clips from her life in pictures, including the iconic moment in “Jerry Maguire” when the 26-year-old actress looked across a roomful of girlfriends at love-professing Tom Cruise and said, “You had me at hello.”

Famous people playing other famous people can be a tricky business. At its worst, the exercise yields nothing but an embarrassing impersonation, but there’s always the hope for that moment of transcendence, in which one legend disappears into the skin of another. In recent years, Michael Douglas managed it, playing Liberace in “Behind the Candelabra,” and a pre-“Black Panther” Chadwick Boseman accomplished it twice, as Jackie Robinson in “42” and James Brown in “Get On Up.”
To that list, we must add Renee Zellweger in “Judy,” giving the kind of masterful performance that requires that we forget everything we think we know about Zellweger as an actor. For 118 minutes, she becomes Judy Garland, which is no easy task — Garland is one of the 20th century’s greatest icons, and while any number of drag queens over the years have paid her varying degrees of homage, she was a...

Judy Garland has a special place in Hollywood. The legend is largely beloved, even to this day. From her early days until her last, she was always embraced by at least part of the world, and sometimes…the entire world. This week, after blowing away audiences at the Telluride Film Festival, the biopic Judy brings the last part of her life to the screen. Buoyed by an amazing performance by Renée Zellweger, the movie is better than your garden variety industry tale. Oscar is going to come calling for this one, mark my words. Luckily, it’s solidly entertaining and never once feels like homework. The film is a biopic, centered on the final year of the famous actress/singer’s life. When we meet her, Judy Garland (Zellweger) is essentially homeless, having been kicked out of her hotel room she stays in with her young daughter and son. Bringing...

Renée Zellweger performs miracles playing Judy Garland: singing her heart out, baring her bruised soul and acting with a ferocity that ultimately rises to a state of grace. Yes, Judy, the well-meaning but wobbly biopic that can barely contain her take on the late Star Is Born star, is pure Oscarbait — ready made for an Academy campaign and rarely soaring to the level of a portrayal that’s a dazzling, deeply felt tribute from one artist to another.

Renée Zellweger really didn’t want to actually sing while playing an older Judy Garland in “Judy,” but director Rupert Goold told her it was essential to show how performing “Over the Rainbow” wasn’t as effortless as it once was.
“I think on camera it’s important to capture the truth of the performer, the literal physical exertion of performing.” Goold told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at the Toronto International Film Festival. “I’ve seen the sweat that pours off the performer on stage…the way the sinews move on the neck… it’s a very gladiatorial state of mind that they are in.

Renée Zellweger will take us all over the rainbow later this year in Judy, a drama set 30 years after The Wizard of Oz, following Hollywood legend Judy Garland's sold-out run at a venue called The Talk of the Town in London. Close to 40 minutes pass before Renée Zellweger sings in “Judy,” and it’s a wonder that it takes so long. Director Rupert Goold’s adaptation of the musical “End of the Rainbow” tracks Garland in the tragic final passage of her life, as the 47-year-old makes her way through a tumultuous tour while grappling with the demons of her troubled showbiz life. Zellweger inhabits the role of the jaded, soul-searching musical icon reasonably well within a dreary and unremarkable saga that finds her grappling with her past, contending with pill-popping addictions and a broken family.
At least the movie isn’t entirely a paint-by-numbers biopic. Goold presents the character’s rough childhood as a nightmarish set of surreal memories, and a ghoulish monstrosity who lords over the young performer in the form of studio mogul Louis B. Mayer. “I make movies, Judy, but it’s your job to give those people dreams,...

If it’s taken so long for a bigscreen biopic of Judy Garland to come to fruition, perhaps it’s because the lady herself warned off any attempts with one of her most famous quotes: “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” It is not, admittedly, a saying that has deterred Hollywood from its ongoing fascination with famous people playing other famous people, though it’s a practice that yields more successful Oscar campaigns than for-the-ages performances: Prosthetically enhanced impersonation, for the most part, isn’t a repeatedly dazzling trick. Yet director Rupert Goold and resurgent star Renée Zellweger have pulled off something unusual and affecting in “Judy”: a biographical portrait in which performer and subject meet halfway, illuminating something of each other in the process.

Renée Zellweger and Sam Smith are teaming up for a new song!
The actress, who is playing Judy Garland in the upcoming biopic Judy, recorded a duet with Smith for the film’s soundtrack. The pair joins forces for a cover of Garland’s song “Get Happy,” while Zellweger also sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” with Rufus Wainwright in another track on the album.
“When I was 17 years old I did a project on Judy Garland for my Film Studies A-Level,” Smith — who previously won an Oscar for his song featured in the 2015 James Bond movie Spectre — said of the partnership.

Renée Zellweger has been out of the spotlight for a long time. We haven’t really seen her in many movies in recent years, but it looks like she could be making a major comeback with this Judy Garland biopic, Judy.
She takes on the role of Garland in the movie, and as you’ll see in this new trailer for the film, it looks like she gives an incredible performance. I’ve been impressed by what what I’ve seen of her in this movie so far. This seems like a perfect role for the actress to take on.

The glitz and glam of Judy Garland’s prolific career didn’t come easy. In the new trailer for “Judy,” Garland (portrayed by Renee Zellweger) fights through her fair share of emotional and financial turmoil.
“Judy” shows the world through Garland’s eyes 30 years after her star-making role in “The Wizard of Oz.” The musical biopic is set late 1960s shortly before Garland’s death, focusing on the performer’s run at the Talk of the Town club in London.
The new footage, which was first teased during London Pride over the weekend with a special introduction by Zellweger, sees Garland arrive at a hotel with her two children, only to find that her suite has been released because her account was in debt. With her home and manager lost, Garland is offered a job in London, but she must leave her children in America in order to take it.

Roadside Attractions and Ld Entertainment have released the first teaser trailer for Renée Zellweger’s Judy Garland biopic Judy.
For those of you who don’t know, Judy Garland led a hell of a hard life filled with a ridiculous amount of abuse from people throughout her life and it all started when she was a kid. It was incredibly tragic and sad and this film should shed some light on some of the stuff she went through.
Zellweger has been out of the spotlight for years. She lost that star power that she once had, but it looks like a film like this could actually reinvigorate her career. It looks like she is going to give an incredible performance. But, we’ll just have to wait and see. I certainly like what I’m seeing from this first trailer!

Known as the "world's greatest entertainer" back in the day, Judy Garland was nothing short of a showbiz powerhouse. Having acted since she was only 2 years old, Garland garnered immense popularity for her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. She was only 17 years old at the time but managed to construct an enviable acting career and went on to become the first woman to win a Grammy for album of the year. Although she had immense success with her acting, Garland's personal life was fraught with challenges as she transitioned from a child actor.
Decades later, an upcoming film about her life is causing a lot of excitement and buzz: Judy. This week, the first trailer for the film was released, showing Renée Zellweger in the part of Judy Garland. Academy Award winner and three-time nominee Zellweger has already undergone a magical transformation, by the looks of it.

Renée Zellweger has the voice of an angel in the new teaser trailer for the biopic “Judy” released Friday — and that angel is Judy Garland.
The Oscar winner portrays the “Wizard of Oz” icon long after her ruby slippers have lost their sparkle, but there’s still magic as the clip opens with Zellweger singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” while the camera pans up the Yellow Brick Road before taking the audience to Swinging ’60s London.

Beloved Hollywood icon Judy Garland has gotten the biopic treatment many times before, from “Rainbow: The Stormy Life of Judy Garland,” an early made-for-tv movie that followed her initial forays into the industry, to the not entirely flattering miniseries “Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows,” but Rupert Goold’s upcoming “Judy” promises to explore a different part of her storied life. Starring Renee Zellweger as the “Wizard of Oz” star, the awards season biopic will likely offer a sober, emotional look at a strange time in Garland’s life.
