The Guardians of the Galaxy haven't said their big goodbyes yet, but if you want to get a sense for how emotional the third volume of Marvel's plucky underdog series could get, look no further than the just-released Spotify playlist featuring songs from "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3." Writer-director James Gunn shared a link to "Guardians of the Galaxy: The Official Mixtape" on Twitter today, along with a retro-looking poster that includes the tracklist for the soundtrack.
"The #GotGVol3 soundtrack is now live," Gunn tweeted. "Listen to the music before seeing the film in theaters on May 5." While the Spotify mix appears to include songs from all three "Guardians" films, including Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky" and Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around And Fell in Love," it also features all the major tracks we've yet to hear in the space-set action comedy franchise. The shock-rocker recently called in to discuss the top 10 picks on his ballot, which ranged from classics like Pet Sounds and Meet the Beatles to lesser-known LPs, like his number-one choice, East-West by the Butterfield Blues Band.

During the blues revival and rediscovery of the Sixties, few dominated like Paul Butterfield, the hard-puffing, hard-living harmonica player and band leader. Assertive and experimental Butterfield Blues Band albums like 1966’s East-West, featuring equally manic and inspired guitarist Mike Bloomfield, were essential college-dorm listening. And during the following decade, Butterfield’s mighty harmonica powered a version of “Mystery Train” at the Band’s Last Waltz concert and movie.

Abramorama has bought global rights for John Anderson’s documentary “Horn From the Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The film uses Butterfield’s music and words, along with first-hand accounts of his family, his band mates and those closest to him. Butterfield, who died in 1987, is regarded by some as the greatest blues harmonica player of all time.
The film features appearances by David Sanborn, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur, Paul Shaffer, Michael Bloomfield, Todd Rundgren and Bob Dylan. It has played at the Mill Valley, Woods Hole and Newport Beach Film Festivals.
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Butterfield is one of a handful of musicians inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame, alongside B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Billie Holiday and Eric Clapton.

A new clip from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 reveals that Peter Quill is still educating Gamora when it comes to classic Earth music in the follow-up to the 2014 film. But this time around she’s a bit more willing to dance, even if she still doesn’t want anyone to know she’s succumbing to Peter’s pelvic sorcery. With the sounds of Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home To Me”—one of the great tracks on the Vol. 2 mixtape—playing in the background, the scene is a nice echo of one in the original which used Elvin Bishop‘s “I Fooled Around And Fell In Love.” Vol. 2 comes out May 5.

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong took to the power of Instagram and his 436,000 followers to help track down a couple's stolen dog. The rocker, 42, got word about the stolen dog from former professional skateboarder Jim Thiebaud, who called on the Bay Area community via Instagram to join the search. Armstrong quickly reposted the alert to his own feed Monday, immediately garnering thousands of likes. The social media...

James Gunn has quickly jumped up to the top of my favorite directors list. Not just because of the awesome film's he has directed, like Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither, but because he is a freaking cool guy. Gunn is also heavily connected with social media, and today, as promised, he revealed the original Awesome Mix Vol. 1 for Guardians of the Galaxy on Facebook. Here's his reveal and breakdown of the the music:

The punk trio Green Day, poet of the New York underground Lou Reed and "Lean on Me" singer Bill Withers will lead a new class of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year. The hall announced Tuesday that it will also welcome Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, who famously sang about loving rock 'n' roll, and make Ringo Starr the fourth ex-Beatle enshrined as an individual. Besides Reed, the class includes other posthumous inductees Paul Butterfield and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The 30th annual induction ceremony will be held at Cleveland's Public Hall on April 18. (Cbr) When Mondo announced early this month that it will release the hit soundtrack "Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume 1" on deluxe vinyl, a common response was, “That’s great, but shouldn’t it be on cassette?” Well, now it will be, undoubtedly leading to refrains of, “What’s a cassette?” According to Billboard, the limited-edition release from Marvel Music/Hollywood Records will arrive Nov. 17, exclusively to independent retailers associated with Record Store Day. The first cassette released by Disney Music Group since 2003, it will remain available through Dec. 31. Each cassette will come with a digital-download version of the soundtrack. Debuting July 29, the soundtrack to Marvel’s blockbuster space adventure spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200; it’s the first soundtrack consisting entirely of previously released songs to reach the top of the chart. According to Billboard, "Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume 1" has sold more than 543,000 copies.

Mondo has announced that they will be releasing the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack on vinyl, and they've revealed the art and specs for it. This is one of the best movies I've seen this year, and one of the things I loved about it most was the soundtrack and how that music played an important part of telling the story. That walkman and those songs were like characters themselves.
The art you see above was created by Tyler Stout, and one of the other cool things about the vinyl release is that each one will come randomly packed with one of the following 9 mini prints. They are currently taking pre-orders right here.

It is hard to believe summer is almost over, but as we look back on a season that gave us surprise hits (who knew Edge of Tomorrow would be so entertaining?) and surprise misses (Let’s Be Cops didn’t quite capture the buddy comedy magic it was looking for) the most interesting trend to emerge was how this summer’s soundtracks were all about the past. From 1920s jazz to 1960s funk to 1970s pop rock, this summer felt more like a music history lesson than the expected barrage of radio hits piped into every blockbuster looking to generate box office heat. (Granted those were there too – looking at you Transformers: Age of Extinction and Imagine Dragons.) And audiences were into this change of pace. So much so that a soundtrack full of songs from the 1970s made it to the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Guardians of the Galaxy’s mix tape styled soundtrack is...

Music plays a big part in "Guardians of the Galaxy" in an interesting way, as the Star-Lord cruises the galaxy listening to sweet '70s tunes his late mom left him on a mix tape. As writer/director James Gunn explained, "that's the only thing he has left of his mother and that's the only thing he has left of his home on Earth. He uses that as a connection to his past and to the sadness that he feels of having left all that and lost all that."
Naturally, these nostalgic but rockin' tunes also resonated with fans of "GoTG." (Cbr) - Until now, we've only gotten hints of the musical tastes of the icons of the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- AC/DC on Tony Stark's in-armor playlist, the Falcon turning Captain America on to Marvin Gaye -- but in "Guardians of the Galaxy," audiences get a complete sense of Star-Lord's '60s and '70s-era power-pop leanings -- and, as James Gunn, Chris Pratt and Vin Diesel attest, it's as appropriately awesome a mix tape as the cassette label suggests. The lineup of songs is epic, in terms of pop touchstones from their era: Swedish rockers Blue Swede's 1974 smash hit cover of "Hooked On a Feeling;" "Go All the Way," the 1972 breakthrough hit for songwriter/lead singer Eric Carmen's early band The Raspberries; "Moonage Daydream," David Bowie's 1971 glam rock ode to an alien messiah; blues rocker Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," from...

Hollywood Records and Marvel are releasing three albums from Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy on Tuesday, July 29.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe soundtrack features classic 1970s songs from the film, plus score by composer Tyler Bates (“Watchmen,” “Slither,” “Dawn of the Dead”). Music plays a major role in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy as the great songs featured in the film are part of the storyline in a unique way.
Explaining how the songs come to play in the story, director James Gunn says, “One of the main story points in the movie is that Quill has this compilation tape [Awesome Mix #1] that he got from his mother before she died that she made for him. It was of songs that she loved, all songs from the 1970s, and that’s the only thing he has left of his mother and that’s the only thing he has left of his home on Earth.

Much of the marketing for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has leaned heavily on 1970s hits like Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling” or Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky,” and from the looks of the new track listing for the film’s soundtrack, those are just the tip of the iceberg.
While it’s common for comic book films to predominantly feature orchestral scores, James Gunn’s entry in the Marvel cinematic universe is anything but “common,” and the inclusion of soundtrack full of awesome hits from the 60′s and 70′s makes sense. The lead protagonist, Peter Quill, was a boy on Earth before he was jettisoned into space and became the “legendary outlaw” known as Star-Lord. With a collection of tunes that Peter Quill himself would approve of, the cover and tracklist of the soundtrack for "Guardians of the Galaxy" were revealed Tuesday, and both have a nostalgia-inducing vibe.
Harkening back to its use in the film's first trailer, the soundtrack kicks off with Blue Swede's 1974 hit "Hooked on a Feeling," and the compilation's affinity for tunes from the '60s and '70s doesn't stop there. The cover seems to be cribbed from Quill's personal cassette collection, depicting a tape in a Walkman (what old people used to listen to music with, kids) labeled "Awesome Mix Vol. 1."
The retro selections no doubt have personal meaning for "Guardians" director James Gunn, who shared a photo of the soundtrack cover on his Facebook page with the note that he was "So happy [Marvel] had the balls to go with this simple design." He later posted a picture of an old Sony Walkman,...

December is a month that increasingly sees few releases of new albums, so the closer this list gets to the present day, the fewer albums of importance there are to discuss, and most of those are hip-hop albums.

Traffic: Mr. Fantasy Aka Heaven Is in Your Mind (Island)
Shortly after Steve Winwood quit the Spencer Davis Group (of which he was the lead singer and organist), he formed Traffic with some guys he'd jammed with at a club in Birmingham: guitarist/vocalist Dave Mason, saxophonist/flutist Chris Wood, and drummer/lyricist Jim Capaldi. After a couple of hit singles, they convened at a country cottage and put together the debut album by Traffic, titled Mr. Fantasy in their native country. By the time it was released, Mason had already quit.
The English and American editions were rather different. Not only did the U.S. LP (on United Artists) have...

Bb King, who has just turned 87, has returned home to Mississippi to play to family and friends. In the experience of a lifetime, Ed Vulliamy joins him and hears from the maestro about his rise from the cotton fields to international stardom
The fat red sun settles itself against the horizon, throwing a last, honey-sweet light through humid evening and over a small crowd on the lawn beside a railroad track that cuts through the cotton fields beyond. A quarter-moon rises and a chorus of cicadas serenades imminent twilight, now conjoined by the sound of the band; the drummer catches the backbeat and the compere announces: "How about an Indianola hometown welcome for the one-and-only King of the Blues: Bb King!"
And on he comes, to applause from people who know him well and claim him as their own – the last of the blues masters a few weeks short of his 87th birthday.

Stevie Nicks performs in New York City
Birthday shoutouts go to Anne Rice, who is 71, Susan Sarandon is 66, Liev Schreiber is 45, and Alicia Silverstone is 36.Speaking of Stevie Nicks, once again she's not among this year's nominee list for The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Yes, I know she's in with Fleetwood Mac, but her solo career deserves recognition. This year's nominees (of which five acts will be chosen) are Donna Summer, Joan Jett, The Meters, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Albert King, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Kraftwerk, Randy Newman, Procol Harum, Rush, the Marvellettes, Deep Purple and Chic. My five choices would be Heart, Donna Summer, Joan Jett, Kraftwerk, and the first band I ever saw in concert, Rush. Smash wonder-producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are developing another musical project for NBC. "The hour-long dramedy centers on a 30-something songwriter who has written the most epic love songs of our time,...

It's debatable as to whether the Tulsa Sound is a definable musical style or a snapshot of rock musicians who made it big out of Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 1970s. Musicians such as Leon Russell, Jj Cale and Elvin Bishop found fame by mixing blues and country music 40 years ago in the heartland of America. Once superstar Eric Clapton aped Cale and Russell's sound (both "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" are Cale originals), the Tulsa Sound became world renowned.
The notion of a unified Tulsa sound for this generation, something borrowing from Russell and yet providing something new and exciting for the '10s, seemed like a far fetched idea until recently. In the past few years a number of Tulsa-bred artists who grew up listening to Tulsa's rock and roll forefathers have emerged. The New Tulsa Sound, a tag made famous by a compilation album released in 2010 by Horton Records,...

Red Dog howls Elvin Bishop’s cherry red 1959 Gibson Es-345 howls over meandering blues in the opening track of his newest album, leaving no question as to why it’s earned the name Red Dog and how well it can speak. Red Dog Speaks journeys through old-timey blues and rock ‘n’ roll to zydeco with an all-star roster of contributors that includes Tommy Castro, Johnny Németh and Buckwheat Zydeco. Bishop’s own journey is evident in the down-home storytelling and varied styles. From the crooning blues of “Red Dog Speaks,” Bishop transitions into the rollicking “Neighbor Neighbor” with Németh providing vocals alongside...
