Early Life
John Ford was born John Martin Feeney on February 1, 1894 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. He was the youngest of 13 children born to Irish immigrants John Augustine Feeney and Barbara Curran. The Feeney family were devout Roman Catholics, and Ford’s childhood was steeped in Irish traditions and values.
At a young age, Ford developed a love of the sea. He worked as a deckhand and boatman during his teen years, gaining experience that would later influence his filmmaking. Though his beginnings were humble,...

Who thought that George Frideric Handel would ever get a jukebox musical on Broadway? Nine arias from seven of the composer’s early 18-century operas are featured in Claire van Kampen’s new play, “Farinelli and the King,” which opened Sunday at the Belasco Theatre after a run in London. The countertenor Iestyn Davies sings at evening performances; James Hall does the matinees. The wonderful thing about “Farinelli” is the chance to hear a great countertenor in a theater of 900 seats, rather than the much larger Carnegie Hall or the truly gargantuan Metropolitan Opera. The Belasco is much closer in size.

Most of the flowers have been removed. The police cars are gone. But more than six months after a mass shooting that killed 49 people and injured dozens more, the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, remains a place of mourning.
On a recent afternoon, People counted nearly 200 people visiting the site to pay their respects. Some brought posters and flowers. Others took photos. Still more knelt to pray.
“I went to college with Cory Connell,” says Louisa Alvarez, 21, who stood by the Pulse sign and prayed. “I come here every month or so just to talk to him. I miss him every day.

[Nb: With the film now – finally – available to buy in the UK (The Forgotten is out today from Metrodome), here’s a repost of my review of the film from the 2014 London Frightfest]
There has been, over the past few years, a growing trend in British horror for setting movies in abandoned housing estates and tower blocks. Joining the growing ranks is The Forgotten, which sees a father and son forced to squat in an empty London council estate scheduled for demolition, seemingly abandoned by the mother. A dark, creepy and foreboding place, the flat is no place for a family; even less so after 14 year old Tommy starts to hear strange noises coming from the boarded-up flat next door…

Well it’s that time of year again – the one where websites across the globe churn out Top 10 list after top ten list. So why should we be any different?! Yet whilst we may be following the predictable end of year lists, I can guarantee that my list is anything but predictable, featuring films from across the globe: including the Us, Canada, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and even good old Blighty!
This year more than ever there has been film after film that knocked it out of the park for me – which is why my Top 10 list has Two sections: the Top 10 and then the pick of 35(!) more brilliant movies (I would have loved this list to be a Top 45, honestly). So what’s my criteria? Well it has to be a movie I’ve seen this year, one that was released this year, i.e. making its UK debut,...

Lauryn Hill has a history of showing up late to her own concerts, and she tried fans' patience yet again at a concert in London Saturday night, arriving 90 minutes late to her show at the 5,000-seater O2 Academy in Brixton. Things weren't much better when she did eventually show up, with attendees criticizing the show's terrible sound quality and alleging that Hill had rearranged classic songs to the point that they were "unrecognizable." As The Telegraph's James Hall wrote: "By the sixth track, so obscure were the reinterpretations that people in the crowd were playing 'guess the song.' It turned out to be 'Ex-Factor,' another career highlight, this time done as a reggae ballad." Meanwhile, fans took to Twitter to voice their disappointment: Ouch. Although, is it just us, or does The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remixed by Major Lazer sound sort of intriguing?...

James Hall and Edward Lovelace's documentary about musician Edwyn Collins's recovery from a stroke eschews conventional form to pitch us into the disorientating reality of his life
There's a brief blast of A Girl Like You before UK directors James Hall and Edward Lovelace's documentary, about the post-stroke recovery of Edwyn Collins, jumps off the deep end.
Collins suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in 2005. He was hospitalised for six months. He lost his memory; his speech was destroyed. He was cast off from his previous persona – as the singer/songwriter who fronted the Scottish alt-rock band Orange Juice. He was left out in open water.
Hall and Lovelace interviewed Collins and his wife, Grace Maxwell, six years after the stroke. Collins was still working on recovering his ability to speak. Where some might have struggled with the lack of clarity, the directors instead use this as a hook...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

There was an open casting call on Screenterrier back in September for a teenage boy to play the lead role in the independent feature film The Forgotten, a a terrifying old fashioned Ghost story with a modern urban setting.
17 year old Clem Tibber (represented by A&J Management) won the lead role of Tommy, with model and actress Elarica Gallagher (represented by Piers Nimmo Management), recently seen in Channel 4's acclaimed series Top Boy, as Carmen, the girl he befriends.
The film also features Shaun Dingwall and Lyndsey Marshall as Tommy's mother and father.
When his mum suffers a nervous breakdown 14 year old Tommy is sent to live with his father in a run down tower block on an estate gripped by poverty and violence.
His father Mark is battling his own demons, caring for his insular teenage son was not part of his plan.
