Berlin, Aug 24 (Ians) Despite the ongoing summer holiday season, working days at the headquarters of the German Football Association in Frankfurt appear packed with important appointments.
As Germany gears up to host the 2024 UEFA Euro, the struggling 2014 World Champion faces a pivotal moment that could determine the country’s future participation at football’s highest level.
Following disappointing campaigns at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, desperate efforts are underway to reclaim success.
Despite securing 42-year-old Hannes Wolf as the suitable director, uncertainties loom over the recovery of talent development failures before the 2024 Euro.
The selection of the former Hamburg, Leverkusen, and Stuttgart coach aims to establish a team-oriented structure involving various figures, thereby addressing responsibilities that were centralized until Oliver Bierhoff’s departure in December 2022.
Simultaneously, worries intensify over the outcomes of the international matches under national coach Hansi Flick until the close of 2023.

Berlin, Jan 14 (Ians) One of German football’s most famous names is about to take over the challenging job of rescuing the country’s struggling national team.
The final steps to an official announcement are yet to go, but the return of 1990 world champion Rudi Voller appears the only sense-making option after the team and fans seem trapped in an emotional and sportive crisis.
One year ahead of the 2024 Euro hosted by Germany, the 90 time-capped former striker as the managing director must fill the emptiness caused by painful World Cup group exits in 2018 and 2022 and a disappointing Euro 2020.
After approval rates for the national team dropped significantly over the past years, Voller is expected to revitalize the broken relationship between the national team and fans, like a lifesaver.
The 1993 Champions League winner and long-standing CEO of Bayer Leverkusen as the successor of managing director Oliver Bierhoff must turn into a feel-good-manager supporting coach Hansi Flick.

Berlin (Germany), Dec 8 (Ians) Hansi Flick will remain the German national football coach despite the 2014 World Champion’s disappointing group stage exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The news came after a two-hour-long crisis meeting on Wednesday evening in a Frankfurt hotel near the association headquarters.
The 57-year-old was expected to report the reasons for the setback and draw a picture of how to return to success for Euro 2024 to be hosted by Germany.
The country’s third-place finish in Group E marked the second consecutive World Cup at which Germany failed to progress to the knockout stage following the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Flick, however, could have turned down the offer as the German football governing body’s technical director and his supporter Oliver Bierhoff resigned earlier this week and who to follow the 54-year-old was yet to be decided, reports Xinhua.

Berlin, Dec 6 (Ians) The timing of the resignation of one of Germany’s highest-ranked football officials might have come as a surprise to many football fans.
However, it was no shock that 54-year-old Oliver Bierhoff took the responsibility for the second group exit at a World Cup within four years and a disappointing Euro 2020.
Critics mounted up on the former striker, who scored the golden goal in the Euro 96 final, but failed to create stability off the pitch following Germany’s 2014 World Cup win.
The departure of the 70-cap former AC Milan forward opens doors for an inevitable re-launch of German football’s struggling development structures.
The coming days might show how far things go as national coach Hansi Flick seems under similar pressure.
Leading positions regarding the national team’s management need to be filled, and the association’s academy requires new input, to say nothing of a new Sporting Director.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 24 (Ians) Spain’s 7-0 win over Costa Rica is one of the biggest wins in the recent World Cup finals and given the way that teams from what were traditionally not considered footballing nations have improved drastically in recent years, wins such as Spain’s are getting rarer and rarer.
The increasing number of players from Asia and Africa now playing in European leagues and the money invested in their domestic competitions means sides are now much better prepared, both physically and tactically.
However, that wasn’t always the case, as a look back at some of the biggest historical results in the World Cup finals shows.
The heaviest-ever defeat in the World Cup finals came in Spain in 1982 when Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1 in their opening group game, with four of the goals coming in 11 chaotic second-half minutes as El Salvador fell apart.

Berlin, Sep 21 (Ians) The German associations’ new campus in Frankfurt seemed the perfect spot for Oliver Bierhoff to launch a statement, and the 54-year-old couldn’t be more serious about it.
Amid buildings shaped by modern design, training and medical facilities it seemed time for the German national team’s managing director to spread a spirit of optimism.
The former striker not only spoke of winning the 2022 World Cup as a realistic goal but delivered in his perspective convincing reasons why the 2014 world champion is prepared to kick the can down the road.
The former Milan forward spoke of past disappointments as an irresistible force of motivation to lift the trophy in December as the world’s best side.
Bierhoff mentioned mentality and quality next to what he called “rage in the stomach” of Germany’s squad, reports Xinhua.

Berlin, May 25 (Ians) Former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick will take charge as German national team coach once Joachim Loew quits after Euro 2020, the German Football Federation (Dfb) said on Tuesday.
The agreement will be valid until after Euro 2024, which is set to take place in Germany.
"Everything happened very quickly, especially signing the contract, but I'm really happy to be the Germany head coach from autumn," Flick said.
"The season has just finished and the last two years at Fc Bayern have left their mark on me. The team spirit and attitude of the players were excellent and I will take plenty with me that will help my work in my new role."
Flick was tapped as the candidate to replace current Germany coach Loew after the latter said in February he would step down following the Euro tournament, which starts next month, reports Dpa.

Cologne, Germany - Sony Pictures in Germany has decided if they can't beat soccer, they might as well join the fan frenzy surrounding the Euro 2012 soccer championships. Ahead of Germany's Euro 2012 semifinal match against Italy Thursday, Sony staged a private 3D screening of The Amazing Spider-Man for the German national soccer team at the team hotel in Gdansk, Poland. Several members of the German squad, including stars Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira as well as team manager Oliver Bierhoff, took part in the publicity stunt. The show of solidarity is unlikely to last. It was the most incredible penalty shootout of all time.
Shearer, Platt, Pearce, Gascoigne and Sheringham had all thundered home their spot kicks, as had Hassler, Strunz, Reuter, Ziege and Kuntz. The shootout had gone to sudden death. The first side to miss would surely be going home.
Then up stepped Gareth Southgate. He strolled into the penalty area, spotted the ball, walked backwards ten yards to the edge of the box, ran up and…
Well, the rest is, as they say, history.
Germany went through 6-5 and won the final of Euro 1996 against the Czech Republic for the first time as a unified nation, Oliver Bierhoff scoring the first ever Golden Goal to decide it.
That would be the last time England would grace the semi finals of a European Championship.

Controversial FIFA President Sepp Blatter has dismissed penalty shootouts as a “tragedy” and insisted that football loses its “essence” when the game comes down to one and one.
In a shocking outburst, he has challenged German legend and head of the 2014 Football Task Force Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative.
Blatter told the FIFA Congress in Budapest:
“Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks. Football should not go to one to one, when it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence. Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution perhaps not today but in the future.”
An alternative to penalty shootouts would bring to an end a 42 year old tradition.
In 1970, in the now defunct football stadium ‘Boothferry Park’ in Hull, English football witnessed its first ever penalty shootout in the semi-final of the ‘Watney Cup’ between Hull City...

Cologne, Germany -- A slimmed down, mainstream-friendly version of the German TV awards aired Sunday night to public protests from the local industry but the best ratings in years.
Nearly four million viewers tuned in to watch the awards, Germany's equivalent of the Emmys, on pubweb Ard. That's nearly triple last year's audience.
The show's organizers -- Germany's main channels Ard, Zdf, Rtl, Pro7 and Sat.1 -- made radical changes to this year's awards to broaden their appeal. They dumped award categories en masse -- supporting actors, editors, screenwriters and camera folk went home empty handed this year -- in order to create a fast-moving, all-highlights show.
Germany's behind-the-camera talent protested, as did Germany's actors union, but the viewers' vote was trump.
Protests aside, few could argue with this year's decisions. Ard's mafia drama "Face to Face with Crime" won for best mini-series as well for its 'extraordinary contribution' to fiction.
