More than two decades after her record-breaking interview with Barbara Walters on “20/20,” Monica Lewinsky is reacting to the tragic news of the veteran broadcaster’s death.
Lewinsky, 49, took to social media on Friday night and posted a short thread remembering the iconic journalist, who died Friday at her home in New York. She was 93. Lewinsky, whose March 3, 1999 interview with Walters on ABC drew a whopping 74 million viewers, recalled meeting Walters at just 24 years of age amid Kenneth Starr’s investigation, which ultimately uncovered President Bill Clinton’s affair with Lewinsky, then a White House intern.
“i knew barbara for over half of my life. we met in the spring of 1998, in the midst of the starr investigation; i was 24,” she tweeted. “i remarked that this was the first time i’d ever been in serious trouble. i’d basically been a good kid – got good grades, didn’t do drugs,...

Lucianne Goldberg, a literary agent who advised her friend Linda Tripp to secretly tape conversations with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, has died at age 87 at her home. No cause of death was given by her son, political commentator and author Jonah Goldberg.
Lucianne Goldberg was a conservative activist whose agency specialized in right-wing books. Tripp took her advice and taped Lewinsky talking about her sexual trysts with President Bill Clinton. Tripp’s 20 hours of conversation were used by special prosecutor Kenneth Starr’s investigation, which ultimately saw Clinton impeached by the House of Representatives and acquitted in a Senate trial.
Goldberg met Tripp while working on a proposal for a book on the death of Vince Foster, a Clinton aide whose apparent death by suicide raised many questions. Goldberg encouraged Tripp to break Lewinsky’s trust and give the tapes to Starr. Goldberg later said she was glad Clinton had been caught “at something.

Sarah Paulson earned her eighth Emmy nomination this season for her portrayal of Linda Tripp on FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story, delivering a nuanced and compelling portrait of the civil servant whose involvement in the Clinton-Lewinsky affair made her a household name after she handed over taped phone calls between herself and Monica Lewinsky (played on the limited series by Beanie Feldstein) to independent counsel Kenneth Starr — conversations in which the latter reveals her sexual affair with President Bill Clinton while she was an intern at the White House.
For showrunner Sarah Burgess, who is also Emmy-nominated for outstanding writing for a limited or anthology series, Tripp was not the villain of the piece, despite her infamous betrayal of her onetime friend and former Pentagon colleague Lewinsky.

Writer Sarah Burgess and star Sarah Paulson said they were trying to understand and depict what motivated Linda Tripp in Impeachment: American Crime Story. The FX limited series depicts the impeachment hearings of President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) after his affair with Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein). Paulson plays Tripp, who recorded Lewinsky’s phone calls with Clinton and gave them to Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr (Dan Bakkedahl).

Linda Tripp died today at the age of 70, according to her family.
Admitted to the hospital in recent days, the woman who almost brought down the Presidency of Bill Clinton passed from pancreatic cancer. Despite being in an ICU, Tripp did not suffer from the effects of conronavirus, as had been suggested earlier on Wednesday.
As reports of the former Pentagon staffer’s declining health circulated earlier today, Tripp’s once close friend Monica Lewinsky took to social media to offer her best:
no matter the past, upon hearing that linda tripp is very seriously ill, i hope for her recovery. i can’t imagine how difficult this is for her family.

Trevor Noah thinks the lawyers defending President Donald Trump in his impeachment trial, including Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz, doth protest too much.
The Daily Show host recapped the latest developments in the Senate proceedings and noted that the Democrats had concluded their arguments.
“Now Trump’s defense is taking the floor and presenting their arguments,” Noah explained. “Basically it boils down to this: One, this is just a political attack by the Democrats. Two, Trump did nothing wrong. Three, there are no firsthand witnesses who spoke to Trump about a quid pro quo.”
The Comedy Central star added that he thinks Trump’s lawyers have gotten really “ballsy.”
“How are you going to complain about having no eyewitnesses when you’re the one blocking the eyewitnesses,” he said. “It’s a pretty slick move. You can’t have it both ways.”

The Senate impeachment schedule will see President Donald Trump’s White House and personal lawyers begin their allotted 24 hours of oral arguments defending Trump on Saturday. As any former reality TV host-turned U.S. President knows, that’s no good for ratings.
“After having been treated unbelievably unfairly in the House, and then having to endure hour after hour of lies, fraud & deception by Shifty Schiff, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer & their crew, looks like my lawyers will be forced to start on Saturday, which is called Death Valley in T.V.,” Trump tweeted Friday morning, ahead of the start of Day 4 of the Senate trial.
According to the impeachment rules which were hammered out in a marathon session Monday, each side gets 24 hours over three days to try their cases. The House impeachment managers wrap up their portion today.
Some reports suggest Trump’s legal team — White House counsel Pat A.

President Donald Trump’s legal team for the upcoming impeachment trial will include two faces familiar for their TV legal commentary: Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz.
Starr, the independent counsel whose investigation of President Bill Clinton led to his impeachment, was scheduled to provide analysis for Fox News Channel’s coverage, but a network spokesperson said that he is no longer a contributor in light of his new role.
Dershowitz posted on Twitter that he “will present oral arguments at the Senate trial to address the constitutional arguments against impeachment and removal.”
His statement noted that he opposed the impeachment of Bill Clinton, whose trial was 21 years ago, and voted for Hillary Clinton, but “he believes the issues at stake go to the heart of our enduring Constitution.”
“He is participating in this impeachment trial to defend the integrity of the Constitution and to prevent the creation of a dangerous constitutional precedent.

Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine whose ouster is the backstory of the impeachment inquiry, did something that the previous witnesses did not: She got President Donald Trump’s attention.
As he tweeted against her, Democrats quickly accused the president of trying to intimidate a witness in real time.
Trump wrote, “Everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad. She started off in Somalia, how did that go? Then fast forward to Ukraine, where the new Ukrainian President spoke unfavorably about her in my second phone call with him. It is a U.S. President’s absolute right to appoint ambassadors.”

Even with the announcement of “Impeachment: American Crime Story” only a few minutes old, FX Chief John Landgraf faced questions about the September 2020 timing of the release during his biannual executive session at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
FX announced the pickup of “American Crime Story” Season 3 just a few minutes before Landraf’s session began, noting the premiere of the show would take place just two months prior to the presidential election. Given the repeated calls for impeachment toward President Donald Trump, as well as the series’ dissection of events leading up to the 1998 impeachment hearings for a Democratic president, it’s no surprise the internet was awash with speculation about whether or not the series would become a political talking point.
When asked about tweets asking FX to reconsider its release timing, Landgraf first said, “I think the way we look at ‘American Crime Story’ is as revisionist history.

Washington — As Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation continues into 2019, anticipation builds around several questions, most notably: What will Mueller’s final report say? And will it ever see the light of day outside the halls of the Justice Department?
The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the top lawyer in the Trump White House had hired 17 attorneys as part of a strategy to suppress the release of the president’s most sensitive discussions with his closest advisers — interactions that could reveal attempts made by the president to obstruct justice.

Continuing his recent media jihad on Twitter, President Donald Trump today attacked NBC and its comedy program Saturday Night Live as a “Democrat spin machine” in his morning online broadsides, and issued a call for a court test of the limits of free speech.
The tweet followed SNL‘s Christmas episode last night, which opened with It’s a Wonderful Trump, an It’s a Wonderful Life spoof imagining an America in which Trump was never president and where everyone is happier.
“A Real scandal is the one-sided coverage, hour by hour, of networks like NBC & Democrat spin machines like Saturday Night Live. It is all nothing less than unfair news coverage and Dem commercials. Should be tested in courts, can’t be legal? Only defame & belittle! Collusion?”
The President was just warming up, though. The tweetstorm questioned where the missing text messages were from former FBI agent Peter Strzok...

Omarosa Manigault Newman took her Unhinged book tour to Bill Maher’s Real Time, where she continued to torch the Trump administration she’d previously ordered us all to bow down before. This time, however, the interview wasn’t the walkover she’s come to expect.
Maher kicked things off noting she’d started in Washington politics working for the Clinton administration.
“In 1998 we were going through an investigation by guy named Ken Starr; we were faced with impeachment. There was a lot of corruption,” Omarosa said by way pointing out the many similarities.
Maher wasn’t having it.
“It wasn’t the same kind of corruption. I don’t think Clinton was colluding with Russia,” Maher pushed back. The controversy back then was “people were sleeping in the Lincoln Bedroom,” he insisted.

Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee began with a surreal, whirlwind of an opening statement that lasted close to 45 minutes. The embattled Supreme Court nominee yelled, cried and contorted his face into a number of grotesque expressions as he pleaded his innocence in response to multiple sexual misconduct allegations. At one point he became emotional describing his boyhood practice of keeping calendars, a digression that lasted a good 10 minutes and which he has cited as proof that he never sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford, who testified earlier in the day.

Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, verbally torched the place as he began his testimony at the Senate Judiciary Committee this afternoon.
“The Constitution gives the Senate an important role in the confirmation process. You have replaced ‘advice and consent’ with ‘search and destroy’,” Kavanaugh blasted, calling handling of accusations against him a “circus,” a “witch hunt” and a “national disgrace.”
Though he is applying for a job, he attacked the Democrats on the committee for their “frenzy” to take him down and, as he has since the allegations started becoming public knowledge, Kavanaugh insisted he never has sexually assaulted anyone. He suggested it was “revenge of the Clintons.” Kavanaugh was part of Ken Starr’s team that investigated President Bill Clinton.
“I have never sexuallly assaulted anyone,” Kavanaugh continued to insist. “Sexual assault is horrific.”

Washington — Can a judge issue a subpoena for a sitting president in a criminal investigation? Can a president be indicted by a grand jury? Can a commander-in-chief pardon himself?
These questions speak to the issue of executive power, and they’re more important than ever given the legal troubles and disregard for the rule of law exhibited by Donald Trump. As you’d expect, they’ve loomed large over Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings this week. Yet Kavanaugh has done his best to duck these questions and...

Twenty years after the impeachment of Clinton, the A&E series will chronicle the infamous political scandal and its lasting influence on the country. “The Impeachment of Bill Clinton” (working title) will follow the former president’s affair with former White House intern Lewinsky, and Clinton’s subsequent impeachment. It also explores themes of media, feminism, politics, and power.
The three-part series will feature previously unseen footage of Clinton and Lewinsky, along with in-depth interview from those closest to the impeachment proceedings, including Lewinsky, special counsel Ken Starr, and James Carville. The Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearings on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court got underway Tuesday, with Democrats protesting the process and at least one of the Republicans serving on the committee already having made up his mind.
“Judge Kavanaugh, I’m proud of you,” Sen. Orrin Hatch (R.-Utah) said during his opening remarks Tuesday,. “ I know how good you are. I know you deserve this position. I’m proud of the president for nominating you. And frankly, I wish you the best, because we’re going to confirm you.”
Hatch’s prepared statement was frequently interrupted by shouting protesters, who were dragged out of the hearing room. He also accused some of his Democratic colleagues on the committee of grandstanding to the TV cameras in the early going Tuesday. “We have folks who want to run for president, who want their moment in the spotlight,...

President Donald Trump, arriving in Charleston, Wv, to lead a campaign rally, refused to take questions from reporters about his former fixer Michael Cohen as he de-planed. But he was effusive in praise of former campaign manager Paul Manafort.
Trump’s trip to West Virginia came at the end of a breathtakingly bad day for the president. Shortly before his plane touched down in Charleston, Cohen addressed a judge at federal court in New York, walking through how he committed eight counts of tax evasion on personal income taxes, giving false statements to a bank, and how he violated campaign finance laws at the direction of a “candidate” for “federal office.”
Almost simultaneously, across the Potomac in Alexandria, Va, Manafort was convicted of eight felony counts of bank and tax fraud, though a mistrial was declared on 10 more. He could spend the rest of his life in jail. The White House...

Sean Hannity and Judge Jeanine Pirro praised President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court on Hannity’s Fox News show Monday night.
Hannity and Pirro are Trump’s staunchest cable news defenders and on set, Hannity joked that Pirro’s ferocious monologues sometimes even frightened him.
“I like seeing you smile about something, I do,” said Hannity as the pair praised the Kavanaugh nomination. “I watch your monologues, you scare me sometimes.”

In the past, Pirro has called for special counsel Robert Mueller to be fired and potentially even jailed.
There was, however, little of that ferocity on set as both hosts gushed over Kavanaugh.
“He runs marathons. He was a pit bull when he was working with Ken Starr. He’s a tough guy, but he’s a soft guy.

President Trump has tapped his pick for the next Supreme Court justice to replace Anthony Kennedy -- and he's being hailed as a strong conservative choice. The Prez nominated DC Circuit Court of Appeals judge Brett Kavanaugh Monday, nearly two weeks after Kennedy announced he was retiring. Kavanaugh, a George W. Bush appointee, is considered by many to be an establishment guy, and has even been called the "Forrest Gump of Republican politics." He's also Catholic.

President Donald Trump tonight named Brett Kavanaugh to replace Anthony Kennedy as Associate Justice on the Supreme Court, in a reality-tv-like primetime reveal.
Trump’s nom was unveiled in the White House’s East Room, picking from his short list provided by right-wing Federalist Society. He called Kavanaugh “one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time.” Announcement of Kavanaugh’s name drew a standing ovation in the room filled with Gop bigwigs.
“I know the people in this room well; they do not stand and give applause like that very often,” Trump bragged after naming his choice.
Broadcast networks scrambled to clear room on their primetime schedules at 9 Pm in order to cover Trump’s announcement, ABC interrupting summer reality TV workhorse The Bachelorette, to carry Survivor: Scotus.

History has abandoned its planned scripted drama series from R.J. Cutler based on the Bill Clinton impeachment. The Breach: Inside the Impeachment of Bill Clinton was greenlighted by History in September as a six-part scripted drama series based on Peter Baker’s bestseller The Breach: Inside the Impeachment and Trial of William Jefferson Clinton. Over the past few months, the producers made several offers to A-list actors for the leads, but no one had been cast.
A rep for History confirmed that the network is no longer going forward with the project in what was described as a creative decision.
The Breach was supposed to be the first installment in The Commanders anthology series that dramatizes “pivotal moments in U.S. history that defined the legacy of the men who served as Presidents of the United States — from the first one, George Washington, to No. 42, Bill Clinton.” The other limited series in the franchise,...
