Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.
The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.
The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).
The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.
“It’ll be complementary in that sense, because Attenborough had some three hours to tell the story, which is a big story and a big life,...

In imagining a world where Gandhi and his killer learned to get along, Rajkumar Santoshi simplifies differences that remain perilous for India
On 30 January 1948, Mahatma Gandhi’s murder at the hands of Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse sent shockwaves through the still nascent democracy of India. Reimagining an alternative reality where Gandhi survives the attack, Rajkumar Santoshi’s latest film purports to offer an unbiased debate of the conflicting ideologies between the non-violence advocate and his killer. Such a premise is already attracting its share of controversy: with the rise of Hindutva-inspired violence, many fear that the film is yet another attempt to reclaim Godse’s image as a patriot.
Despite being surrounded by such fervent discourse, Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh is, at the end of the day, a mediocre effort. Deepak Antani’s Gandhi and Chinmay Mandlekar’s Godse do share a startling resemblance with the real historical figures, but...

The motion poster of director Rajkumar Santoshi’s upcoming film ‘Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh’ was unveiled on Tuesday. The video depicts the war of ideologies between Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse. Nathuram Godse is the one who shot Mahatma Gandhi in broad daylight on January 30, 1948.
It starts off with Nathuram Godse saying that he always wanted to kill Gandhi and would still kill him if he got the chance. To which Gandhi says that a bullet can only kill a person and not the ideas propagated by them as they continue to inspire generations long after they’re gone.
Gandhi then asks what kind of war Godse thinks he is fighting against him, to which Godse says it’s the war of ideologies. Gandhi then goes on to say in the video that to fight an ideological war one doesn’t need weapons but the ideas as the ideological warfare tests the strength of ideologies.

Ever since, I have been torn between feelings of love and hate for this much-hyped movie. Hey Ram was released in Februrary 2000. My quarrels were mostly about sex and violence. For instance, the scene in which Aparna (Rani Mukerji) is sexually assaulted and left to die by Altaf, the Muslim tailor, was horrifying. The subsequent sequence through the streets of Kolkata as Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan) goes on a rampage of revenge is also harrowing to watch. The portrait of the Kolkata (then Calcutta) riots included scenes in which Muslims were slaughtered by Hindus and Sikhs. The central rape scene of the initial portion and...

Actor-filmmaker-singer Farhan Akhtar got trolled for appealing to the voters of Bhopal on Sunday, a week after the city had recorded 61.71 per cent voting. Following this, he pointed out how people have got their "priorities" wrong.
"Humne taareek galat samjhi toh galaa pakad liya, jisne itihaas galat samjha use galey laga rahe ho. #priorities," Farhan tweeted on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, he had urged voters of Bhopal to "say no" to Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who made a statement in favour of Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse.
"Dear electorate of Bhopal, it's time for you to save your city from another full-of-gas tragedy. #SayNoToPragya #SayNoToGodse #RememberTheMahatma #ChooseLoveNotHate," he had tweeted.
Soon after his tweet, netizens attacked him.
"Dear Farhan Akhtar, Bhopal went to vote a while back so you're a bit too late," Pavithra wrote.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Friday said it was ignorance that made Mughals give the name 'Hindu' to the nation. In a tweet, Haasan said the 12 Alwars (Vaishnavite poet-saints) or the 63 Nayanmars (Saivaite poet-saints) did not mention the word Hindu.
Haasan said the term 'Hindu' was given by Moghals or by others who came earlier to rule. The British who later ruled the nation seconded the term.
"When we have various identities, it is ignorance to have a title given by a foreigner as a religion," Haasan said.
According to Haasan, even though the identity `Indian' is of recent origin, it will live long.
Haasan said it was on the part of commercial politics and spiritualism to restrict "our vast nation into a religion".
On May 12, Haasan said while campaigning at the Aravakuruchi Assembly constituency about the killer of Mahatma Gandhi: "The first extremist of independent India was a Hindu -- Nathuram Godse.

Days after creating a row with his Hindu terrorist remark, Makkal Needhi Maiam (Mnm) founder Kamal Haasan reiterated on Wednesday that independent India's first extremist was a Hindu.
Campaigning in Thiruparankundram Assembly constituency for his party candidate contesting in May 19 by-election, Haasan said: "In Aravakuruchi I said independent India's first extremist was a Hindu. It is an historical truth."
Haasan said some people were getting angry over his remark.
Haasan said all his family members were Hindus and he would not talk in any manner to hurt their feelings.
According to him, people without listening fully to his speech at Aravakurichi were alleging that he was creating enmity amongst communities.
He said truth will always be bitter and that bitterness will turn into medicine.

Actor Vivek Anand Oberoi on Monday slammed Kamal Haasan over his "first terrorist was Hindu" remark, saying the actor-politician should not divide the country.
While campaigning for his party Makkal Needhi Maiam's candidate for the May 19 Assembly by-election in Aravakuruchi in Karur district on Sunday, Haasan said: "The first terrorist of an independent India was a Hindu - Nathuram Godse."
It was Godse who shot dead Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi. Referring to Gandhi's killing, Haasan added: "I am here to question that killing."
Haasan's comment did not go down well with a section of netizens, including several politicians. Vivek, who is a vocal supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp), was also not impressed.
In a Twitter post to the senior actor, Vivek wrote: "Dear Kamal sir, you are a great artiste. Just like art has no religion, terror has no religion either! You can say Godse was a terrorist,...
