The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artistes who will be inducted in 2024. According to ‘Variety’, the diverse list includes R&b/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton, pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, as well as 1970s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner, and Ozzy Osbourne, alongside 1990s icons such as the Dave Matthews Band and Mary J. Blige.
Jimmy Buffett’s inclusion among the inductees comes as a surprise. His entry is unexpected not only because the late singer/songwriter was not on the ballot this year but also because he had never been nominated before.
‘Variety’ reports that the Rock Hall’s committee, seemingly in a sentimental mood after Buffett’s passing seven months ago, chose to honour him via a separate, non-voted category for “musical excellence”.

Tabulated from a massive vote that had artists, industry figures, and critics weighing in, the list has been a source of conversation, inspiration, and controversy for two decades. Kenny Loggins spoke of one Elvis Presley song in religious terms. He didn’t mention that the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was not the first singer to record the song. The tune in question has been cited as an all-time classic. That might not be the case.
Kenny Loggins’ favorite Elvis Presley song is 1 of the most famous
In a 2022 article, Grammy.com asked several artists from different genres to name their favorite tune by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Donny Osmond chose “Polk Salad Annie” and Dan Smith from Bastille chose “Unchained Melody.” Loggins, on the other hand, picked a track that was far more famous.
“When ‘Hound Dog’ came out in 1956, I was eight years old,” he recalled. “I would come home from school and would sneak into my brother’s room to play his 45 over and over again. It’s one of the greatest songs of all time.

Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog” might sound a little juvenile today but it was a game-changer in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. The tune was written for another singer, and a writer of the track preferred the original. He had a point.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Hound Dog’ was a surprise hit
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller co-wrote “Hound Dog” for Big Mama Thornton. Elvis later covered the song. Decades ago, some rock ‘n’ roll fans would probably be surprised to learn that Elvis did not originate that song. However, Thornton has received more and more attention in recent years, so this fact probably isn’t a shock to too many fans anymore.
During a 2006 interview with Elvis Information Network, Stoller recalled making a lot of money from the song. “The first time I received a sizeable royalty check was in 1956,” he said. “It was for $5,000. I never thought I...

The Beatles were just full of surprises. Paul McCartney said The Beatles’ “Drive My Car” (1965) contains a joke derived from a common theme in blues music. On the other hand, John Lennon barely had anything to say about the song.
Paul McCartney on The Beatles’ ‘Drive My Car’ and ‘Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)’
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul recalled the writing of “Drive My Car.” “It was wonderful because this nice tongue-in-cheek idea came and suddenly there was a girl there, the heroine of the story, and the story developed and had a little sting in the tail like ‘Norwegian Wood’ had, which was ‘I actually haven’t got a car, but when I get one you’ll be a terrific chauffeur,'” he said. “So to me, it was LA chicks, ‘You can be my chauffeur,’ and it also meant ‘You can be my lover.

Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog” is one of the most important songs in the history of rock ‘n’ roll but it doesn’t exactly have deep lyrics. Frank Sinatra insulted “Hound Dog” onstage while its writers looked on from the audience. Sinatra’s feelings about the tune didn’t stop him from recording another tune from the same songwriting duo. Surprisingly, the songwriters weren’t big fans of Elvis’ “Hound Dog” either.

The songwriters Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller wrote tunes Elvis recorded, “Hound Dog” being the most famous example. In their 2009 book Hound Dog: The Lieber and Stoller Autobiography, Stoller discussed something Sinatra said onstage. “‘We’d like to do a new song for you,'” he said. “‘I don’t know it very well, but I’ll do the best I can.

It’s always interesting when classic rock stars admire early rock ‘n’ rollers who sound absolutely nothing like them. For example, a member of Pink Floyd is a huge fan of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Suede Shoes.” His admiration for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll is fine, but he definitely gave the guy way too much credit.
1 Pink Floyd member said Elvis Presley’s ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ changed the sound of rock
During a 2020 interview with NME, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason said Elvis’ “Blue Suede Shoes” was the first song he loved. He called Elvis’ song “the beginning of rock ‘n’ roll.” Mason promoted the myth Elvis invented rock ‘n’ roll when it was actually pioneered by Robert Johnson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and other Black artists who sadly never became major pop stars.

One of the writers of Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog” survived an infamous shipwreck. This led to one of the most famous comments ever made about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Afterward, one performance of “Hound Dog” made Ed Sullivan change his mind about Elvis.

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote hits for several different artists during the 1950s. In a 2020 interview with Elvis Australia, Stoller revealed he was on the SS Andrea Doria, a cruise ship that sank in 1956. Fortunately, Stoller and his then-wife, Meryl Stoller, survived the sinking.

Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog” wasn’t originally by Elvis. The tune was written in 10 or 15 minutes. Subsequently, one of the writers of the song said it had to be performed in a specific way.

In 1956, Elvis Presley appeared on The Steve Allen Show and sang to a basset hound. Allen was visibly delighted by the situation, but Elvis didn’t seem as keen. He was stiff and uncomfortable, but, as a people pleaser, he agreed to the spectacle. He would later go on to describe it as the most embarrassing moment of his career.

Every rock star has been influenced by Elvis Presley in some way, even if they never listened to the Memphis singer. Bruce Springsteen has admitted to being an Elvis fanboy. In comparison, his music doesn’t sound like Elvis’, but Springsteen has a flare and energy on stage that matches what made the “Suspicious Minds” singer so great in his glory days. Springsteen said one particular Elvis song made him a fan and hit him “like a thunderbolt.”

“Hound Dog” was one of the earliest hits by Elvis Presley that kicked off his speedy rise to fame. The track was first released in 1956 and was a cover of the song by Big Mama Thornton. It was an immediate hit, getting radio play all across the country. The song made its way to New Jersey, where a young Springsteen heard it.

In the 2022 biographical drama movie Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann, Austin Butler stars as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The film is told from the perspective of Elvis Presley’s infamous manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Several of Presley’s real-life performances were recreated, including his infamous rendition of “Hound Dog” on The Steve Allen Show. In the film, Colonel Parker was credited with the idea. However, Parker actually had nothing to do with this. Here’s the real story behind the moment.

Austin Butler transformed into a music icon this year, taking on the presence and the swagger of the King in Baz Luhrmann’s electrifying “Elvis.” And Janelle Monáe made the reverse journey, continuing her reinvention from futuristic pop diva to multi-hyphenate actor with a meaty (and mysterious) central role as a tech entrepreneur in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
Janelle Monáe: Being someone who has toured for many years, making it your own is no small thing. I know a little bit about what that takes. You played Elvis when he was a teenager, all the way up to his passing.
Austin Butler: That was one of the challenges of it, because we were shooting out of sequence.

Who better to direct a movie about one of the most flamboyant rock stars than the equally ostentatious Baz Luhrmann? "Elvis" was never going to be a gritty, dramatic retelling of the superstar's ups and downs, and there's a good case to be made for why it shouldn't be — one made quite convincingly by the movie itself. It's hard to overstate Elvis Presley's cultural impact, particularly his early years when he shattered the cultural landscape by bringing the raucous aesthetics of his brand of rock and roll to stuffy mainstream America. Luhrmann's style was always going to be well-suited to depicting such an iconic story on the big screen.
The "Moulin Rouge!" director didn't hold back in his ambitious biopic, constructing a glamorous and suitably bombastic movie that doesn't shy away from the hardships endured by everyone involved. That's an impressive achievement considering he had to condense Presley's 42 years...

Baz Luhrmann has lifted the curtain on his musical process, recalling one key artist who could have changed his 2013 adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” entirely.
The filmmaker, who recently wrote, produced and directed the glittering musical biopic “Elvis,” starring Austin Butler, opened up about his long-standing love affair with pop music at BAFTA’s Life In Pictures event in London on Friday.
The evening welcomed Luhrmann back to London following his worldwide box office success with “Elvis”, which both honors the rock’n’roll musician’s back catalogue and offers contemporary reworking of songs of the era, such as Doja Cat’s new track “Vegas,” which samples and reworks the 1953 blues song “Hound Dog” by Big Mama Thornton.
Luhrmann described pop music as a “translation” for the story across all of his films, pointing specifically to “The Great Gatsby” in order to highlight how he worked with Jay-Z (who was...

If there were an award to bestow for the most accomplished living American pop songwriter who never doubled as a recording artist, the frontrunner would almost definitely be Mike Stoller, 89, half of one of the most famous writing duos of all time, Leiber & Stoller. Even if the memory of Elvis Presley were completely wiped away, like the Beatles’ in that “Yesterday” movie, this pairing would still be in the history books and collective consciousness for “Stand by Me,” “On Broadway,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Young Blood,” “Kansas City,” “Love Potion #9,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “I’m a Woman,” “Ruby Baby,” “Is That All There Is?” and other numbers deeply embedded in pop culture from the mid-‘50s forward.
But we do remember Elvis — and are remembering him more universally than we have since his 1977 death, thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s new “Elvis” biopic. So it’s a perfect chance to catch up with Stoller,...

Baz Luhrmann’s box-office-topping new movie Elvis does manage to show the powerhouse singer Big Mama Thornton (played by Shonka Dukureh) performing “Hound Dog,” a song she recorded in 1952, four years before Elvis Presley. But it leaves out two very significant players: songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote “Hound Dog” as teenagers for Thornton, and went on to write “Jailhouse Rock,” “You’re So Square (I Don’t Care),” “Trouble,” and other hits for Presley himself.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is far from being just about Elvis, when it comes to the music in the film and on a forthcoming soundtrack album. Besides the vintage Presley cuts included, the movie is providing the opportunity for the most high-profile multi-artist soundtrack in years. The lineup of participating artists was announced in May — without any song titles attached — and a handful of singles has been released, by Eminem, Måneskin and Doja Cat. But not until the film began screening more widely, in advance of its June 17 wide release, did it become fully apparent who was singing what and just how some of the more unusual choices would fit into the biopic.

The full artist lineup for the “Elvis” soundtrack has been revealed — although still not the actual tracks they’re performing — and among those takin’ care of business on the album are Eminem, Tame Impala, Stevie Nicks, Jack White and Jazmine Sullivan.
A handful of the artists named were already known, including Kacey Musgraves, who said on the Met Gala red carpet that she’ll be doing “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for the film; Maneskin, whose version of “If I Can Dream” was used in a recent teaser trailer; and Doja Cat, whose “Vegas” was already released as the album’s first single.
But that still left room for plenty of surprises in Monday’s announcement. Along with the aforementioned, the lineup includes CeeLo Green, who is listed as a collaborator with Eminem on their mystery track; the combination of Swae Lee and Diplo; and Chris Isaak and Pnau,...

Doja Cat is taking Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” back to its original blues roots: Big Mama Thornton. On Thursday, the singer released “Vegas,” her track from the upcoming Elvis biopic set to arrive June 24. The rap-filled track samples Thornton’s vocals and adds a Doja flair to a classic.
In the lyrics, Doja raps to a man who never deserved her attention and whose ass she had sittin’ first class.
“I ain’t playin’, that’s hide and seek, player/High school, when you finally peak,” she raps, aided...

Kacey Musgraves has recorded a version of the 1961 Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for the upcoming soundtrack to director Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” biopic, the singer has revealed.
The country-pop star noted that she had covered the song Monday while walking the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit gala. Musgraves was there with Luhrmann, Priscilla Presley and members of the film’s cast.
Details on the soundtrack have been hard to come by before now, with little publicly revealed beyond the fact that the first single from the album, Doja Cat’s “Vegas,” which includes an interpolation of the Presley hit “Hound Dog.” will be out this Friday. Doja Cat premiered a partial version of the song live at her two April Coachella appearances.
Beyond that, all that has been officially said about the soundtrack is that it will be on RCA,...

Doja Cat’s single from Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” soundtrack, “Vegas,” has been given a release date — May 6 — after the singer-rapper debuted a live version of the tune at the Coachella festival over the last two weekends.
The single precedes a full film companion album that has loosely been scheduled for summer by RCA, it was also announced Monday. That label news is not exactly unexpected, since RCA has been Elvis Presley’s label home since the late 1950s.
Although “Vegas” is an original song, live snippets reveal the Doja Cat track does incorporate a Presley classic, “Hound Dog.”
Luhrmann was out at Coachella for its second weekend, supporting three artists associated with “Elvis” as a film or soundtrack — including Yola, who plays Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the movie, and Shonka Dukureh, who portrays Big Mama Thornton, as well as Doja Cat.
The exact nature of the soundtrack is not yet being revealed by RCA,...
