On September 3, 2000, Pope John XXIII was beatified (declared
"Blessed") by Pope John Paul II, making him eligible for canonization
(sainthood) if it is demonstrated to the satisfaction of the
Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the Pope that he has
interceded with God to perform a miracle.
