A lot has changed since Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth brought The Last Song to the big screen almost a decade ago. Aside from the couple's real-life romance (and split), their Nicholas Sparks movie introduced fans to a group of new talent, including Bobby Coleman, who played Jonah Miller. Recently, I was prompted to see what Bobby was up to after watching a related viral video. I'd like to thank TikTok, group texts, and my teenage sister for supporting me on this journey.
Back in 2000, Bobby stole hearts as the younger brother of Miley's character, Ronnie. While Ronnie was busy laying the groundwork for Vsco girls everywhere, Bobby played the ever-eager Jonah, who just wanted to spend time with his dad. The now-22-year-old actor has since appeared in a few other TV guest spots and movies, though he took a break from acting in 2013. However, he recently jumped on...

I'm So Excited (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2012, Spa) Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces. 90 mins
Almodóvar responds to his country's economic woes with camp hysteria and Carry On humour. In many ways this airborne disaster farce – anarchic, absurdist, garishly stylish and gleefully debauched – is a return to the Spanish auteur's subversive roots. But there's a serious subtext to the silliness, and the metaphors are brought back down to earth for a satisfying landing.
The Eye Of The Storm (15)
(Fred Schepisi, 2011, Aus) Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. 119 mins
The imminent death of Rampling's matriarch throws an aristocratic family's dysfunction into relief in this Aussie drama, whose overstuffed story is redeemed by three watchable leads.

Originally announced way back in 2008, Robosapien has had a long gestation period and has gone through numerous re-titles (including Cody the Robosapien and Robosapien: Rebooted) since being filmed in New Orleans some 5 years ago. Helmed by longtime kids TV director Sean McNamara (Even Stevens, That’s So Raven, Bratz), the film is a family-friendly adventure film with a heart, the type of movie which rarely gets made outside of the TV movie arena these days…
The film is based (loosely) on Wow Wee’s robotic toy of the same name, and tells the story of an inventor working for Kinetech Labs who designs a robot for search and rescue missions that has the ability to mimic human actions and emotions.

Following on from his emotional teenage drama Soul Surfer, director Sean McNamara returns to a more infantile approach, as the director of successful kids’ TV shows That’s So Raven and Even Stevens now presents Robosapien, a film that is reminiscent of children’s films such as Agent Cody Banks. And yes, I have seen Agent Cody Banks.

Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Jimmy is a “mod,” a youth movement dedicated to wearing snappy suits, driving Vespa motor scooters bedecked with side mirrors, popping amphetamines and obsessed with the new sound of bands like The Who and The Kinks. Their other pastime is engaging in bloody brawls with “rockers,” throwbacks to the 1950s, who listen to Elvis and Gene Vincent, wear leather biker gear, grease in their hair and drive massive motorcycles a la Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.” Often cited as a worthy successor to “Rebel Without a Cause” as the greatest angry youth picture ever made, it is that and more, including a first cousin to the “kitchen sink” dramas of scribes John Osborne,...

Stars: Minnie Driver, Jeremy Renner, Bobby Coleman | Written and Directed by Charles Oliver
Prior to hitting it big with The Hurt Locker and propelling himself into superstardom/back into obscurity with the enormous success/spectacular failure of Avengers Assemble, Jeremy Renner starred in this fairly low-key drama about a man on death row and the woman he wronged. Minnie driver plays Ana, a woman struggling to make ends meet and raise her son, who has additional support needs. Renner plays Saul, a man whose gambling debts have force him into a life of crime. These two people’s lives collide in a dramatic, tragic and highly predictable manner.
The problem with Take is that for all its worthiness and decent performances, it is unfortunately very dull. I finished watching it not three hours ago and I’m already struggling to remember much of it. The Big Important Climatic Crime...

Snowmen Review
Snowmen is loosely based on writer-director Robert Kirbyson's childhood in Canada and where he faced among other things, a parent dealing with leukaemia. However, thanks to a little creative licensing, we have the story of Billy (Bobby Coleman), a small town tween loving wintertime and playing in the snow with his pal Lucas (Christian Martyn).

Another first time writer-director releases his film this weekend, and we are two for two in recommending their films. Sean Durkin scored with our Martha Marcy May Marlene review and now Robert Kirbyson has done it with Snowmen.
Where Martha Marcy May Marlene is dark in its tale of a young person lost, Snowmen is uplifting in its ability to bring light to a dark subject matter. Billy is 10 years old and has recently fought back cancer that he thinks will still kill him. Determined to make his mark on the world before his time expires, he sets out to break the world record for number of snowmen built during a 24-hour period.
Kirbyson tells his tale in the most unconventional of ways and it adds up to something original and honest.
His lead is played by Bobby Coleman, who emits a power much older than his age. He may be bald from chemo,...

Stories like the one featured in The Last Song are so stale that they beckon to be tossed in the garbage and set on fire; instead, teenage audiences continue ingesting them. What is worse is that it's based off a novel written by Nicholas Sparks, whose novels are so disgustingly predictable and contrived that I almost shudder to recall the time I actually sat down and watched A Walk to Remember.
Here's how it goes almost every time: some girl who dresses in mostly black and has a sordid past (even at 17, which means she doesn't really have that sordid of a past) relocates to a place where she does not fit in. She hates her loving parents, but will get distracted from that when she meets a boy who is total dreamboat, but is from the opposite side of the tracks. Love has no bounds though, and so she...

Nicholas Sparks author of The Notebook (2004) and Dear John (2010), tugs at your heartstrings again in The Last Song (2010), a film tailor made for Miley Cyrus. Sparks and the Cyrus camp team up to bring teens and movie goers a heartfelt story about the joys and pitfalls of growing up. Grab the box of tissues, the sleeve of bon-bon and your super soft blanket; because, yes it is that kind of film! Begrudgingly, Ronnie Miller (Miley Cyrus) is forced to leave New York City to visit her estranged father Steve (Greg Kinnear) along with her younger brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman). At eighteen, the troubled teen already has an impressive rap sheet and time away from the city is much needed. Back in the day, Ronnie was a musical protege, but just to spite her father she refuses to ever play again. While visiting her father in the remote beachside community, Ronnie...

Chicago – Nicholas Sparks is the Michael Bay of touchy-feely weepies. No matter how derivative or cynically calculating his stories prove to be, they never fail to rake in the dough. Several of his books have been turned into blockbusters, the best of which benefit greatly from the strength of their cast, as in “A Walk to Remember” and “The Notebook.”
Unfortunately, “The Last Song,” stars The Artist Currently Known as Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus, who seems uncomfortable acting without a laugh track. Her initial attempt at graduating from the Mickey Mouse Club into big girl roles was admittedly doomed from the start, since this Sparks adaptation is the first co-written by the author himself, who succeeds in making his work appear even more cloying onscreen. This is the cuddliest cancer drama since “My Sister’s Keeper.”
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

The Last Song, a treacly affair that is virtually unwatchable outside its target demographic (which is about 5 years younger than the film thinks it is), is the next great bit of glorious banality for both Nicholas Sparks and Miley Cyrus. Sparks, who really likes himself, aims at a somewhat younger crowd this time around, apparently in the hopes of proving that the laughably nonsensical appeals to a more diverse age range than was previously believed.
Teen whippersnapper Ronnie (Cyrus) is forced to spend the summer with her father, who she marks as the villain in her parents’ divorce. This is rather hard to get behind, as her composer father (Greg Kinnear) is so affable he’s practically mushy. It’s also tricky to play along with in the same sense that everything else in the film is, because I didn’t believe anything Cyrus was trying to portray for a second.

Break out the tissues and the popcorn, as Miley Cyrus takes on the female lead in Nicholas Sparks.s The Last Song. A beach picture of sorts it is sure to become an annual favorite for fans of the genre as well as fans of both Ms Cyrus and Mr. Sparks. The DVD and Blu-ray combo should please those who might want to view the film multiple times, perhaps while at the beach themselves. Young singer Miley Cyrus plays Ronnie Miller, a girl almost in adulthood, but having hit some bumps on her journey. Mom (Kelly Preston) and Dad (Greg Kinnear) are divorced, and both Ronnie and her little brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman) have some issues from this.

Hollywoodnews.com: HollywoodNews.com stays on top of the latest DVD and Blu-ray releases so you know which films are worth your time and money. This week, we review:
“The Last Song” (Blu-ray)
Given the pop-culture crossover appeal of entertainer Miley Cyrus and novelist Nicholas Sparks, I half-expected “The Last Song” to perform better at the box office. (Disney might have, as well, though a $62 million gross against a meager $20 million production budget isn’t a bomb by any means.)
Then again, the movie wasn’t great, so success wasn’t exactly a guarantee. Disney princess Cyrus plays Ronnie, a disgruntled teen sent by her mom (Kelly Preston) to spend a long summer with her estranged father (Greg Kinnear). She raises turtles, falls for the town hunk (Liam Hemsworth), and finds herself in true, melodramatic Sparks fashion. A late-act medical twist is expected – given the author...

Novelist Sparks turns screenwriter with this film, which combines his usual themes (beaches, grieving teens, cancer) as a vehicle for Miley Cyrus to put her childhood career behind her. It’s exactly what we expect, but it’s also fairly watchable.
The summer after her high school graduation, rebellious Ronnie.

This is the Pure Movies review of The Last Song (directed by Julie Anne Robinson, starring Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear, Bobby Coleman, Liam Hemsworth, Hallock Beals, Kelly Preston, Nick Lashaway and Carly Chaikin, written by Nicholas Sparks). Nicholas Sparks writes weepy to a formulaic tee. His popular tear-jerking novels, including The Notebook, Walk to Remember, and recently adapted Dear John, have proved profitable on the big screen. They invite the scores of die-hard fans equipped with copious tissues to sob over the latest manifestation of Sparks' star crossed lovers. The author denies he is a romance-writer, comparing himself to Hemingway rather than Mills and Boon. But having completed the screenplay for The Last Song before finishing the novel itself, he must be aware, as are the studios pouring money into adapting his films, of the reason behind his audience pulling power.

"The Last Song," by Nicholas Sparks is one that will bring joy and sadness to your heart at the same time. While the movie follows the book, for the most part, there are key elements left out of the movie that would have made the movie better, if they were put in.
Liam Hemsworth plays a convincing role of a young man, named Will Blakelee, who falls head over heels in love with a new girl in town, Ronnie Miller, played by Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus, wasn't the best choice to play the leading role, but at the same time wasn't the worst pick. Liam Hemsworth out shines Miley Cyrus, with his caring and heart felt words and personality.

Just got home from the preview screening of The Last Song (directed by Julie Anne Robinson) and I thought I’d share a clip with you that Disney just sent over.
The Last Song is Miley Cyrus’ new movie about a teenage girl called Ronnie (Cyrus) who, with her brother (Bobby Coleman), is shipped off to live with their father (Greg Kinnear) for a summer vacation. Things haven’t been going too well at home and her mother (Kelly Preston) decides a summer vacation in the sun, sea and sand of Georgia will do her some good… especially when she meets Will (Liam Hemsworth).
The last song is based on the book by Nicholas Sparks so immediately, you know it’ll be a tear jerker!
The Last Song is released 30th April and stay tuned for some exclusive interviews in the coming weeks.

There is a little talked about phenomenon in junior high and high schools that for some reason preoccupied my thoughts throughout much of The Last Song, as my mind drifted away from what was on screen (it had little choice). I call it "socioeconomically pretty." You may be familiar with it from your own experiences in high school, particularly if you went somewhere where popularity often aligned with class distinctions. The gist of it is this: There are a lot of not-very-attractive people in high school who are nevertheless perceived as attractive because of their socioeconomic standing. Wealthy parents, nice clothes, and an expensive car has a way of supplying confidence. People love confidence. It's that very confidence that others find attractive, even where traditional beauty does not exist. If you believe you're pretty, then so will others.
You could also call this the Tori Spelling effect.
The problem, of course,...

This time, it’s Miley Cyrus and Greg Kinnear who do the suffering under the sun. She‘s a petulant, rebellious daughter, Ronnie Miller, sent by her separated mom Kim (Kelly Preston), to spend the summer with Kinnear as her fragile-looking composer dad Steve Miller. (Fly like an eagle!) Also around for the summer: Bobby Coleman as precocious little brother Jonah.

Top movie critics gave Miley Cyrus' 'The Last Song' movie poor reviews. Touchstone Pictures released their new Miley Cyrus flick entitled, "The Last Song" into theaters today, and the top movie critics in the business, for the most part, didn't like it,and gave it some pretty poor reviews. However, there were a couple who thought it was good, and gave it a couple B ratings. The movie stars: Miley Cyrus, Bobby Coleman, Liam Hemsworth, Hallock Beals, Nick Lashaway, Carly Chaikin, Nick Searcy, Kate Vernon, Kelly Preston, and Greg Kinnear. Wesley Morris from the Boston Globe gave it a C rating. He said, it was "A more convincing star could make this a degree more tolerable, although in Cyrus’s defense not much more." Roger Ebert over at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a B-. He stated, "I like Miley Cyrus. I like her in spite of...

The players: Director: Julie Anne Robinson, Writers: Nicholas Sparks, Jeff Van Wie, Cast: Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear, Liam Hemsworth, Bobby Coleman
Facts of interest: Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks.
The plot: A young teenager must spend the summer at her dad's and falls in love with a beach boy who will bring her back to reality.
Our thoughts: I only wish “The Last Song” would be the last Nicholas Sparks adaptation to hit the big screen. Granted, I have never read any of his novels, but the quality of the recent films based on his popular work is rapidly decreasing. This latest one stars Miley Cyrus as the lead character, and to tell you the truth, I think she’s better off sticking to signing.

The latest Nicholas Sparks' cinematic adaptation to hit the Silver Screen, The Last Song, is just plain brutal. Brutally awesome, that is! There have been a number of dubious naysayers who didn't believe that Miley Cyrus could translate her success in the music world to that of the film world, but I'm here to say: The haters are W-r-o-n-g. If anything, in The Last Song, Cyrus proves herself to be an even better actress than singer, and that's saying something! She's proven her ability to succeed without that Hannah Montana nom de plume around her neck. I'm calling it right now, World: Miley Cyrus is the next next Julia Roberts, and we can all expect her to be around for decades to come.

If you think you've seen enough coming of age dramas, you might want to think again. Nicholas Sparks had a hand in this one. It's called The Last Song (2010), and it's got his signature all over it. With its scenic set location, a boy-meets-girl/girl-meets-boy summer romance, and a family conflict involving a teen girl and her estranged father, Sparks gets to tell a story that he co-wrote with Jeff Van Wie for the big screen, adapting his own screenplay for the first time ever. The film stars Miley Cyrus, who steps out of Disneyland to play a character very different than that of a certain celebrated pop sensation named Hannah Montana (TV). In fact, they're miles apart. Miley plays 17 year old piano prodigy Veronica "Ronnie" Miller, a troubled teen who is sent from New York to Tybee Island, Georgia in order to spend the summer with her estranged father Steve,...

Miley Cyrus makes a collaboration with Spanish singer David Bisbal on a revamped version of her new song "When I Look at You" and debuts the accompanying music video. David's performance on the beach is mashed up with footage from a music video for the song's original version.
"When I Look at You" is one of the songs appearing in Miley's first mini album "The Time of Our Lives [Walmart Ep]". It is also included in the soundtrack compilation of her new movie "The Last Song". "We listened to it and went, 'Oh my gosh, this could not be more perfect.' It describes the entire movie," so Miley said.

You know what you’re getting into when you go to see a Nicholas Sparks adaptation: Pretty Rich White People With Problems. And “The Last Song” is no different. Keep in mind, though, that it is still no “The Notebook.”
Tween superstar Miley Cyrus plays Ronnie, a “troubled” teen (you know she’s troubled because her nose is pierced!) who’s visiting her father (Greg Kinnear) — from whom she’s distanced herself since he and her mother (Kelly Preston) separated — in his quaint million-dollar seashore home in Georgia. Tagging along is little brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman). Ronnie runs into too-good-to-be-true stud Will (Liam Hemsworth) in a meet-cute scene (spilled milkshakes are fun!) on a beach populated by extras from the Aryan Nation. And, yes, true to form, tragedy does eventually strike.

Novelist Nicholas Sparks comes at us once again with The Last Song. Guess what happens? People find love and can't understand it. Relationships are mended and someone has to die. Pretty much your standard recipe in all of his books turned movies. Despite the sarcasm, this story manages to do a few things right. It also does two things very wrong, which just happen to be really important in any flick.
