While the film industry mourned the loss of one of their favorite Cannes rituals, a beach party thrown every year by the Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey promised to throw a “refreshed” version next year. He dropped into Cannes to announce a landmark $23 million Cad investment supported by the Canadian federal government, for a new content initiative to begin in 2026 that will expand TIFF’s scope of offerings. This is the single largest government investment TIFF has received since the campaign to build TIFF Lightbox. The three-year investment will enable the organization to accelerate planning and development work that is currently underway.
TIFF is looking for good news, as the pandemic and the loss of festival sponsors including Bell — the theater complex used to be called Bell Lightbox — made a dent in the festival’s finances.

After a frenzied day of covert organizing and internal discussions, members of the Precarious Film Festival Workers Collective (Le Collectif des précaires des festivals de cinéma) staged an impromptu rooftop protest at Tuesday’s Cannes Film Festival opening-night gala.
Members of the group snuck onto the roof of the Palais where they dropped a sign with their motto Sous les écrans la dèche. At the same time, another group of demonstrators from the collective began a second protest on the ground. They held a sign with the same message and began chanting and blowing whistles to draw attention.
Local armed police immediately descended on the ground protesters and snatched the banner away after a brief tussle with the protestors. There were around a dozen protesters on the roof and a dozen more on the ground. You can see footage from the dramatic tug between the protesters and police below.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s whirlwind trip to Nigeria has come and gone. As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex presumably make their way home to Montecito, California, an expert says King Charles III and Prince William likely want to make one thing absolutely “clear.” What? That the visit was in no way connected to the British royal family or government.
Charles and William want it ‘made clear’ that Harry and Meghan didn’t represent ‘the royal family or Britain’ in Nigeria
Harry and Meghan spent May 10-12, 2024, in Nigeria on the heels of the former’s visit to London, England, to mark 10 years of the Invictus Games. It centered largely around the adaptive sporting competition founded by Harry as well as mental health.
However much it may have seemed like a royal tour—comparisons were made from the time of the trip’s announcement—it wasn’t, which is,...

The filmmaker said the proposed new financial instruments of tax incentive and investment obligation set to be introduced as part of the overall reforms to the German film funding infrastructure from 2025 do not go far enough.

The late Satish Kaushik had an illustrious career as an actor and director, but his last movie, Kaagaz 2, doesn’t do justice to his legacy. Like the previous installment, Kaagaz 2 is also a courtroom drama talking about a societal issue. The message is sincere and relevant, but V.K. Prakash’s weak direction and the caricaturish dialogue leave a bitter aftertaste. The characters in this world behave like they’re written by a toddler, and the low production value along with the poor soundtrack impacts the movie a lot.

Bejoy Nambiar, in the past few years since the advent of Ott content, has come up with many stories for the streaming platforms and for theaters as well. As a writer-director, he has always been known for exploring cool subjects. Sadly, he overindulges himself, and the movie or the show quickly gets out of hand. Dange, which means riots, is a film that he ambitiously directed alongside a Tamil version, trying to pull off what Mani Ratnam did with Ravan/Ravanan and Yuva/Aaytha Ezhuthu. The Tamil film is called Por and follows the same plot as the Hindi one. Set in Goa, Dange is about rivalry between two men who seemed to have a history much before they ran into each other years later in St. Martins University.

After reaping the rewards of a protracted growth spurt, Italy’s film industry is facing a forced slowdown as the country’s right-wing government dithers with modifications they plan to make to several key regulations, most significantly to the country’s now stalled tax incentives for film and TV production.
At a packed protest event held earlier this month in Rome’s Cinema Adriano multiplex, industry figures from all sectors – including producers, writers, actors and big-name directors such as Paolo Sorrentino and Marco Bellocchio – lashed out against having to wait endlessly for the government to approve new guidelines so production companies can apply for the 40% tax credits that basically drive the business. Some are also concerned that their projects might end up not complying with still murky new eligibility criteria.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Tokyo Vice” Season 2, Episode 10, “Endgame.”]
In “Tokyo Vice,” honor is a double-edged katana. On one end sits Ozaki (Bokuzō Masana), the Meicho Shimbun newspaper executive who confesses to Emi (Rinko Kikuchi) that he was the one who destroyed the Yoshino videotape — although “confesses” is too generous a word. Ozaki solves her season-long mystery without batting an eye, before mansplaining his action as if Emi is an idiot. He had to destroy the tape. If the Meicho ran a story about a government official’s involvement in the murder of a hostess, then the paper would be frozen out of government business for years. “And how would that serve our readers?” he asks. So now that Emi has brought him further evidence against prime-minister-in-waiting Jotaro Shigematsu (Hajime Inoue), proving his ties to Yakuza leader Shinzo Tozama (Ayumi Tanida), the dignified thing to do is turn over her documents to the proper parties,...

The Indian government, in response to concerns over obscene, vulgar, and pornographic content, has taken decisive action by blocking 18 over-the-top (Ott) platforms along with associated websites, apps, and social media accounts. This move comes after repeated warnings from Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur.
The decision to block these platforms was made under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, in consultation with relevant government ministries, departments, and domain experts specializing in media, entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights.
The Minister emphasized the responsibility of Ott platforms to refrain from propagating obscenity, vulgarity, and abuse under the guise of creative expression. The blocked platforms were found to host content depicting nudity, sexual acts, and inappropriate contexts such as relationships between teachers and students, incestuous relationships, among others.

On tour with her daughter after her cancer diagnosis the Scottish national treasure opens up about her life and finds big laughs in the face of death
Here’s a documentary following the Glaswegian standup comic Janey Godley on her Not Dead Yet Tour; in 2022, Godley was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, and she does the first gig in Inverness a day after chemotherapy. And God, is she funny, with jokes running the gamut from the disgraced peer Michelle Mone living in a static caravan to cancer. Her daughter, Ashley Storrie, also hilarious, does the warm up.
The title of the film is just Janey; no surname necessary – not in Scotland anyway, where Godley has a special place in people’s hearts. The Berlin Film Festival could face major changes aimed at preventing a repeat of this year’s award ceremony, where several winners criticized Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza and expressed support for an immediate ceasefire.
The statements, which included Ben Russell, co-director of Encounters best film winner Direct Action, using the word “genocide” to describe Israeli military action in the region and Israeli filmmaker Yuval Abraham, co-director of best documentary winner No Other Land, referring to conditions for Palestinians as “apartheid,” set off a political firestorm within Germany. Prominent politicians, both left- and right-wing, branded the statements “antisemitic” and called for “consequences.”
On Monday night, the advisory council for Federal Cultural Events in Berlin (Kbb), the group that oversees several government-backed cultural institutions, including the Berlinale, criticized the festival and, by association, outgoing Berlinale directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian for not doing more to distance the festival from such Israel-critical commentary.

The 2024 edition of the Berlinale continues to generate heated debate around Israel’s war in Gaza, with out-going Berlin festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian defending the Feb. 24 closing awards show speeches against mounting criticism from German politicians and media.
“This year’s festival was a place for dialogue and exchange for ten days; yet once the films stopped rolling, another form of communication has been taken over by politicians and the media, one which weaponizes and instrumentalizes antisemitism for political means,” Chatrian said in a letter posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday.
The artistic chief argued statements made on stage at Saturday’s closing awards gala were protected under German freedom of speech laws.
“No matter our individual political convictions or beliefs, we should all keep in mind that freedom of speech is an essential part of what defines a democracy. The award ceremony on Saturday, February 24 has been...

The heated debate over the awards ceremony of this year’s Berlin Film Festival shows no signs of cooling down.
On Tuesday, German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann called out the Berlinale for allowing what he called “antisemitic” statements to go unchallenged at the awards gala in Berlin Saturday night. Speaking to newspapers of Germany’s Funke media group, Buschmann said the film festival “suffered serious damage” as a result and suggested there could be criminal consequences for some of the statements and slogans.
The awards ceremony for the 74th Berlinale turned sharply political as one award winner after another used their festival platform to call out the Israeli government for its actions in the war in Gaza.
Ben Russell, co-director of Direct Action, winner of the best film in Berlin’s Encounters sidebar, used the word “genocide” to describe Israeli military action in the region. Palestinian filmmaker Basel Adra, whose...

Reviewing No Other Land out of Berlinale, Rory O’Connor described the “disorienting and dispiriting landscape” into which it was premiering. Quite an understatement to say the city of Berlin and its major-market festival fumbled through any response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, against which many filmmakers who’ve attended the festival in years past have spoken out. As Rory summarizes:
“The film premiered this week at the Berlinale, a festival mired in recent controversies in a country that is failing to acknowledge the limits of its own guilt. In the month leading up to the festival, several filmmakers pulled their work from the selection to protest the lack of Palestinian solidarity. Workers of the festival then released an open letter calling for the festival’s organizers to demand a ceasefire. In the weeks leading up, the city’s cultural minister, Joe Chialo, had to backtrack on a proposed ‘anti-discrimination...

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) moved to force the vote to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) for her mistranslated comments regarding Somalia and Somaliland.
Greene offered her censure legislation on the House floor as a privileged resolution, a procedural gambit forcing leadership to hold a vote within two legislative days.
Leadership was able to bring this resolution to the floor for a vote or motion to table it. These choices require majority support.
Greene said she informed leadership that she was introducing the resolution but did not get an indication of how they would act on it.
On top of being formally censured, this resolution would remove Omar from the Budget Committee and Education the Workforce Committee.

Some years ago, an uncle of mine traveled to Palestine with a group of volunteers. It was a time of fewer videophones, certainly in the region, and the organization involved had requested that they visit the West Bank and simply document what they saw. After a few days, my uncle circulated an email in which he recounted the story of a mechanic who, having refused to leave his home and business, had his tools arbitrarily confiscated by the Israeli army. The tools, the fruits of years of labour and, given their value, effectively irreplaceable, should have provided for him and his family for years to come––an entire livelihood disappeared with the flick of a pen.
Something that’s occasionally forgotten amongst the carnage and statistic of recent events is how relentless the decades of conflict have been on regular Palestinian lives: the daily humiliations enacted on anyone forced to...

Russia’s leading opposition figure, Alexei Navalny, who united people in his fight against Vladimir Putin’s regime, died Friday in a remote Arctic prison, where he was serving a decades-long sentence on trumped-up charges. He is survived by his wife, two kids, and the millions of Russians at home and abroad who yearned for a better future. The Kremlin’s propaganda machine, now in overdrive, lists the cause of death as a blood clot, spinning a narrative that Putin — ever-so-popular with the people — didn’t need Navalny to die.

Feisty, topical and nakedly political speeches dominated the opening ceremony on Thursday at the Berlinale.
They followed a red carpet that mixed demonstrations and high style over a more than two-hour stretch.
Festival co-chief Mariëtte Rissenbeek felt it necessary to address head on the festival’s recent controversy over invitations to five far-right (AfD) members of the German parliament. The invitations were subsequently canceled, but the backlash has scarcely subsided.
“The Berlinale has a lot of space for dialog. Between people and for art, but it has no space for hatred. Hatred is not on our guest list. It won’t be invited,” Rissenbeek said.

Claudia Roth, Germany’s state minister for culture and media (Bkm), has unveiled her long-awaited plan to overhaul the country’s film funding system, which includes the introduction of a 30% tax incentive and an investment obligation for streamers.
The changes to the German Film Law (Ffg) should come into effect at the beginning of 2025 once they have been passed by the Bundestag.
The proposals would see the German Federal Film Board’s (Ffa) brief being extended to oversee the film funding programme now administered by Roth’s ministry. The Ffa’s funding for production, distribution and exhibition would be allocated automatically in future.

Amid widespread backlash, Berlin Film Festival has decided to disinvite politicians from AfD, a German right-wing extremist party, from the opening night ceremony on Feb. 15.
In its statement, the Berlin Film Festival acknowledged the controversy caused by its invitation of elected officials from the AfD and said the festival’s directors had decided to withdraw their invitations to five AfD politicians.
“The current discourse has once again made it very clear how much the commitment to a free, tolerant society and standing against right-wing extremism are part of the Berlinale’s DNA,” stated the festival, adding that “for decades, the Berlinale has been committed to democratic values and against all forms of right-wing extremism.”
There have been large protests in cities across Germany in recent weeks following news reports that some members of the AfD had attended a clandestine meeting in November to discuss the possibility of deporting migrants, even those who have German citizenship.

Germany’s culture minister Claudia Roth has defended the controversial decision to invite several members of the increasingly ostracized far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to the opening of the Berlinale on February 15.
Roth, who is also behind the Berlinale’s decision to replace incumbent artistic director Carlo Chatrian from 2025, defended the decision by indicating that the AfD officials were democratically elected to the state and federal parliaments. She also issued a blunt warning that individuals “stay away” if they share any of the “anti-democratic… or racist views” that their populist party may represent.
The AfD started as an anti-Euro party a decade ago but morphed into a broader far-right movement. It is currently the second largest opposition party in the federal parliament, but is ostracized politically because all other major parties have vowed never to form coalition governments with the AfD.

For Italian conductor Beatrice Venezi, 2024 kicked off on a decidedly sour note.
On New Year’s Eve the baton-wielding Venezi, a friend of right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, was heckled at the Opéra de Nice by French anti-fascist protesters as she took to the podium.
The incident reflected tensions rippling through European entertainment industry circles as far-right parties sweep to power in Italy and the Netherlands and gain ground across the EU.
Italy took a sharp turn to the right in 2022, when Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy party has neo-fascist roots, emerged the winner in the national elections. Since then her right-wing camp, which denies accusations of nostalgia for fascism, has moved to hold more sway within state-controlled media and cultural institutions such as broadcaster Rai, the Centro Sperimentale film school and the Biennale, the Venice Film Festival’s parent organization.
Scrutiny is being directed at Venezi, an adviser to Meloni-appointed culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano.
