There’s a point in “The Oratorio” when the attention turns to the organ at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in New York City. The giant instrument is both a vestige and a living example of the long history of the church, located on Mulberry Street near Chinatown and Little Italy in Manhattan. With key parts made from wood and leather, it’s something for which continued existence isn’t a guarantee. It has to be nurtured if it’s going to continue on in its current form. “The Oratorio” doesn’t lean into the metaphor, but for a documentary about opera, it’s hard not to see it as a perfect representation of another institution that has survived with the help of people keeping it alive.
Airing on PBS on Friday, “The Oratorio” boasts Martin Scorsese as a cheerleader for the value of not just the organ or the artform,...

Apple TV Plus announced a four-part docuseries about two-time NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson coming to the streaming service at a date still to be announced.
The docuseries will explore Johnson’s accomplishments on the court and off, as well as his global impact, through never-before-seen footage and interviews with Johnson and those in his inner circle. Unnamed “heavyweights in business and politics” will also appear, per the streamer.
In addition to becoming a five-time NBC champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson changed the conversation around HIV when he announced his positive status in 1991.
The docuseries does not yet have a title, but it has already set its creative team: director Rick Famuyiwa, editor Dirk Westervelt and cinematographer Rachel Morrison. It will be produced by New Slate Ventures and Xtr Production in association with H.Wood Media and Delirio Films.

Another game night for the books. "Tonight, on Celebrity Game Face, six very famous people are getting down and dirty in a hilarious competition," Kevin kicked off the episode. "I, of course, am your host Kevin Hart. But, it's never about me. Oh no, it is not." As he continued, the 41-year-old comedian introduced the teams and faced some playful roasting. After being...

Yes, you read that correctly. "What the hell!" Tamera sounds off at the start of the clip. "How do you do this?" As the other teams struggle through the task, Team Gaffigan tries an unexpected strategy. "Jim and...

It’s going to a long, long week.
Dominated by Reality and Nonfiction categories, the opening night of the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards was a rather stilted affair on Monday. Making almost every non-technical misstep possible, the Nicole Byer hosted show still somehow managed to be boring as well.
Streaming Monday to Thursday on the TV Academy website and airing on Fxx on September 19, things started out promising and traditional enough with a nighttime crane shot from outside the organization’s North Hollywood complex.
“Ordinarily, we’d be having this show in a packed theater somewhere in Los Angeles,” Nailed It host and Emmy nominee Byer said in the pre-record opening monologue. “But as we know, there’s nothing ordinary about 2020, it’s wild,” Byer added with understatement in a year that has seen the Creative Arts Emmys, Hollywood and almost everything else transformed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In May, comedy writer Jeannie Gaffigan opened up to People about the scary discovery that she had a tumor the size of an apple wrapped around her brain stem. Gaffigan – who is married to comedian and actor Jim Gaffigan – underwent a nine-hour surgery on April 18 to have the tumor removed.
Though successful, Gaffigan’s road to recovery hasn’t been easy: she battled aspiration pneumonia before returning home and was left unable to swallow due to throat paralysis, leading to the placement of a feeding tube and tracheotomy.
Now, three months later, Gaffigan is sharing her progress and renewed verve for life.

What do you get for the father who has everything? He already has every power tool on the market, season tickets to see his favorite teams, and enough cool techy toys to last him a lifetime. Although he might not fancy himself a big reader, there’s nothing more thoughtful, or personal, than a book picked just for him.

For comedian Jim Gaffigan and wife Jeannie, a terrifying health crisis has served as a source of renewed purpose.
“I made a complete commitment to be sure that my kids are compassionate kids,” Jeannie tells People in this week’s issue as she recovers from a lengthy surgery that removed a six-cm. benign tumor from her brain last month.
The papilloma of the choroid plexus, which was wrapped around Jeannie’s brain stem and suppressing several of her cranial nerves, had been growing for likely over a year. Jeannie’s Mount Sinai Hospital neurosurgery team believes they removed it in its entirety.

For months, comedy writer Jeannie Gaffigan brushed off her recurring headaches, dizziness and coughing fits, blaming the symptoms as byproducts of life as a working mom of five.

Wondering why some networks have all but given up on creating new sitcoms? Maybe Jim Gaffigan knows the answer.
The stand-up comic, whose sitcom "The Jim Gaffigan Show" debuted on TV Land this week, has been promoting the show with interviews (including here, here, and here) where he explains why he took his new series to basic cable.
According to Gaffigan, each broadcast network tried to shoehorn his autobiographical series into its preferred sitcom format, with less of an eye on what would make the show unique or good and more on what would make it test well with audiences and run long enough to be sold into syndication. That's where the real money is for a TV production company -- we're talking hundreds of millions of dollars for a successful series with at least 100 episodes in its library -- but to get there, the networks apparently believe that risk-avoidance...

Fifteen years ago, Jim Gaffigan was yet another young stand-up comic riding the conveyer belt from the comedy clubs to a network sitcom in the wake of the success of Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Tim Allen, and more. His CBS sitcom "Welcome to New York" was designed as a vehicle for him, but somewhere between the start of development and when it hit the air, the focus shifted to co-star Christine Baranski, an Emmy winner for CBS' "Cybill." It turned out to be a good showcase for neither, and produced only 13 episodes before calling it quits. That wasn't the end of Jim Gaffigan, sitcom actor, but for a long time, it was the end of Jim Gaffigan, aspiring sitcom star. He took jobs on other people's shows ("The Ellen Show," "My Boys") and largely focused on his food-obsessed comedy act (like his famous routine about Hot Pockets). Given how well...

The Jim Gaffigan Show feels like a family business. It stars comedian Jim Gaffigan as a fictionalized version of himself — a food- and nap-loving devoted father of five, who is raising his brood of fair-haired kids in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Gaffigan also writes and produces the scorchingly funny series with his wife and writing partner Jeannie, and while the three of us chat on the phone, they’re joined by their 3-year-old Michael (child No. 4), who entertains us before departing with a charmingly lisped “Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! Thank you!” Clearly, performing is in the youngster’s … Continue reading →

Hilarious human garbage disposal and legendary lazy boy Jim Gaffigan is returning to Comedy Central with a new stand-up special, Obsessed. There’s just one slight problem: Obsessed airs tonight at 10 p.m. opposite Mad Men. Make no mistake: He’s a fan of AMC’s acclaimed retro-series and, as a former copywriter, he knows the ad industry well. (“My favorite thing about Madison Avenue,” he notes, “is that there’s a gyro truck on 53rd and Madison.”) But he’s here to sell Americans on his third Comedy Central special (“I’m breaking the mold and this time I’m talking about food,...
