The Sonning Prize is a Danish award given to someone who has made outstanding contributions to European culture. Previous winners include Winston Churchill and Bertrand Russell, as well as directors Ingmar Bergman and Michael Haneke. Well, this year, they’re adding another name to the list – Lars von Trier.
And before von Trier can accept the prestigious award, he sat down with Peter Schepelern, an associate professor at the University of Copenhagen to give one of the most interesting interviews you’ll watch all year.

Last year, writer/director Lars von Trier was set to follow-up his Nymphomaniac films with the TV series "The House That Jack Built", but last fall, in his first interview in three years, he seemed to suggest he was done with filmmaking. He felt, in light of his recovery from an alcohol addiction, he couldn't capture the same hyper-energy he once did. Well, it looks like some things have changed, for Cineuropa reports "The House That Jack Built" is apparently back on, as the filmmaker still is hard at work writing the eight-part, English-language series, though, to be fair, perhaps he doesn't consider this "film"-making as it will be release on television. And with this news comes more details on the project. "The House That Jack Built" will apparently focus on a serial killer and will be seen from the murder's point-of-view. These reports come from the University of Copenhagen where he studied,...

Perennial bad boy and punk auteur Lars von Trier has come out from under the covers of depression and silence once again to share a few revelations, personal and professional, with University of Copenhagen film professor Peter Schepelern in his first interview since his startling winter 2014 Q&A with Danish daily Politiken. (Soundvenue breaks down the 15 best quotes, with Cineuropa translating into English.) 1. He has fallen off the wagon, and yes, he's still depressed as shit. "I drink moderately — probably not moderately enough," said Von Trier, who is still attending AA meetings. “For the moment I feel really shitty. I cry and cry… yes, [I am] a sensitive man.” Von Trier courted controversy when he revealed that was undergoing treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, and that "Nymphomaniac" was the first film he wrote fully sober — and it took him a year and a half. ("Dogville" was apparently written in a 12-day drug binge and.

Chicago – Lars von Trier opens his brilliant “Europa” by literally trying to hypnotize his audience. A barely lit train track moves slowly across the screen as Max von Sydow calmly incants a hypnotizing speech and countdown. “On the count of ten, you will be in Europa.” Is he speaking to the audience or to the man who just appeared on the screen when he says, “You are in Germany. The year is 1945.”?
“Europa” is von Trier’s attempt to deconstruct the war movie, the thriller, the standard Hitchcock rip-off, and even his own nightmares in one fever dream of a film. “Europa” (released under the name “Zentropa” in the States, so as not to avoid confusion with “Europa Europa”) announced the arrival of a massive international talent, one that would go on to make great films like “Breaking the Waves”, “Dancer in the Dark”, and “Dogville”.
