"You can't raise kids like caged animals!" Vertical Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Birthmarked, about the trials and tribulations and craziness of parenting. From Canadian director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais, this stars Toni Collette and Matthew Goode as two scientists who decided to give up their work and become parents (for research). The main concept is that, being scientists, they set out to raise three genetically different children into becoming a genius, an artist and a pacifist. But years later, they realize that despite their best efforts, their children are simply "average" and really nothing special. The cast includes Michael Smiley, Suzanne Clement, Fionnula Flanagan, Jordan Poole, Megan O'Kelly, and Anton Gillis-Adelman. This looks a bit awkward and amusing, worth checking out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais' Birthmarked, direct from YouTube: Two respected scientists (Toni Collette and Matthew Goode) decide to quit...

Majority of production loans have gone to female directors.
New projects from Neil Jordan, Neasa Hardiman (both pictured) and John Butler are among those supported by the Irish Film Board in its latest round of funding decisions.
In an apparent nod to recent pledges by the Ifb to commit to gender parity in its funded projects, three of the four production loans in this quarter were given to films with female directors.
Filmmaker Neasa Hardiman, whose television credits include Happy Valley and Tracy Beaker Returns, will make her feature directorial debut with Sea Fever, which has been given a provisional offer of commitment by the Ifb.
The film, centred on a science student who becomes isolated from her superstitious trawler crew as they struggle to overcome a deadly parasite in their water supply, was also written by Hardiman and will be produced by Fantastic Films.

Bruce (Thomas Haden Church) is a small-town ice plow driver in rural Quebec who has a bit too much to drink one night, heads out for a plow and accidentally hits and kills a man in the middle of the road. Panicked, and still more than a little drunk, he hides the body off the side of a road and heads into the woods in an effort to elude the police and the consequences they bring with them. He awakes the next morning in a plow almost out of gas and nearly buried in snow. Staying out of jail soon takes second place on his list of priorities right behind staying alive. As Bruce scrounges empty cabins for food and checks local papers for news on the dead man we see flashbacks to the days leading up to the accident. Details about his personal life and state of mind are revealed, and...

The recent craze of survivalist stories, movies with a small cast that focus on one character battling the dangers of the wilderness, is not going to stop anytime soon. Half a year after Gravity and All is Lost captivated moviegoers, telling tales of people grappling with tense life-or-death situations, we get the low-key but high-suspense Whitewash, a bare and thinly plotted thriller from Canada set in the icy Quebec wilderness.
Thomas Haden Church plays Bruce Landry, a snow plow driver who, while driving under the influence of alcohol and his own misery, hits a man with his vehicle. Whether or not this is an accident due to poor visibility from a dense fog of snow or a deliberate murder, given his lack of panic upon the collision, is unclear. Bruce buries the body in a pit of snow on the side of the road and then drives his plow recklessly...

Forget all those cute, snowflake-suffused Christmas cards. From Howard Hawks’ The Thing From Another World to the Coen brothers’ Fargo to this week’s somewhat self-explanatory horror movie Blood Glacier, it is an established movie law that terrible things occur in cold weather. And director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais doesn’t seem in any hurry to break that rule with his debut thriller, Whitewash, which is currently available to buy on iTunes and arrives on VOD this coming Friday.
The film stars Thomas Haden Church (Sideways, Spider-Man 3) as a down-on-his-luck snowplow operator in rural Quebec who accidentally kills a man during a drunken nighttime joyride,...

One of the movies that really surprised me in both scope and performance at last year's Viff was writer/director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais's Whitewash (review). The thriller begins as the story of a lonely man named Bruce (Thomas Haden Church) who saves and befriends a down on his luck guy named Paul (the excellent Marc Labrèche), but what begins as the tale of two lonely men who find solace in each other's company takes a surprising turn when it becomes a full out survival tale once Bruce goes hiding in the nearby woods.
On paper this sounds like it shouldn't really work but Whitewash is successful in part because of the depth [Continued ...]...

Canadian writer/director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais won the Best New Narrative Director prize at last year year's Tribeca Film Festival for the thriller "Whitewash," and he's excited to see how it's received when everyone has a chance to see it. "Now I just can't wait for Americans to discover Thomas Haden Church's performance," Hoss-Desmarais said when Oscilloscope Laboratories picked up the film last year. The release is impending and we've got an exclusive trailer for you to check out. Starring Thomas Haden Church, the film follows a snowplow operator who accidentally commits murder and must deal with the fallout. Cleverly set against the backdrop of rural Quebec, where the man likely already feels like an outsider, this one likes like a noir tinged thriller with a nice sense of mood and atmosphere. Here's the full synopsis: In the harsh, wintry woods of rural Quebec, Bruce (Academy Award®-nominee Thomas Haden Church), a down-on-his-luck snowplow operator,...

Last night in a packed theatre at the Tiff Bell Lightbox an eclectic group of film critics, the who’s who of top local film producers and filmmakers, and Tiff executives gathered to hear the unveiling of the 13th annual Canada’s Top Ten films of the year. The room buzzed with excitement with many discussing the Nyfcc winners, predicting the Board of Review winners and, of course, noting which filmmakers were in attendance (assuming that was a clear cut sign of who made the list).
A hushed silence came over the crowd when Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of Tiff, took to the podium on stage to introduce the evening’s host, beloved local comedian Steve Patterson. “As a 15 year veteran of comedy, I know what it’s like not to be recognized”, Patterson cracked, making light of Canadian gems often going overlooked on the world stage. Much like the act of violence that is the catalyst for the story, Canadian actor/director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais' feature film debut, Whitewash, seemingly comes out of nowhere. It is a sparse, dark and compelling work of art that lands a gut-wrenching sucker punch to the viewer's solar plexus before masterfully unraveling both the roots of the violence and its consequences via parallel storylines. Bathed in the suffocating darkness of a snow-covered rural Canadian winter, Thomas Haden Church powerfully garners the majority of screen time in a film that is equally sparsely populated both by people and dialogue. The film opens with a nighttime snow-covered scene of a man striding down a street with a purpose. Clothed inadequately for the weather and winded, he stops to take a breath only to be overtaken and rammed by a man driving a Bobcat. The driver proceeds to load the body on the...

Tribeca Film Festival Best New Narrative Director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais wins for his chillingly unique snow thriller Whitewash starring Thomas Haden Church and Marc Labrèche. Northern Quebec is the setting, and winter turns out to be more than it seems. We had a chance to talk about cold weather and cold hearts.

On a very snowy night, Whitewash, directed by Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais, blows us into the icy world of a man at a crossroads. Bruce, whose life changes forever after encountering Paul, whose personality couldn't be more different from his but whose situation is no less urgent, has to confront the basics of survival - food, warmth, shelter. Bruce is played with great strength and impeccable timing by Thomas Haden Church. We met for a chat about muscles, John Huston and Richard Harris, glass eyes and strong beer. It is April in New York, and although the allergy season got to both of us a little bit, very few things get Thomas Haden Church down.
Anne-Katrin Titze: I was very impressed with the physicality of what you were doing in Whitewash.
Thomas Haden Church: Thank you. It was very gruelling.
Akt: Simply the list of things you are carrying through the snow.

Tribeca Film Festival's Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer and I met up for a conversation at MoMA PS1 during Michelangelo Frammartino's World Premiere of the breathtaking 28 minute continuous cinematic installation Alberi in the Vw Dome. This is Boyer's second year at Tribeca, after running the Directors’ Fortnight program at the Cannes Film Festival. We discussed how to bring nature into an urban setting through films like Bruno Barreto's Reaching For The Moon, Reha Erdem's Jîn, Whitewash, directed by Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais, Hisham Zaman's Before Snowfall, and Red Obsession, directed by David Roach and Warwick Ross.
Interacting with cats, Lil Bub & Friendz, tree people, and being Tricked by Paul Verhoeven - Tribeca 2013 challenges the boundaries of cinema.
Anne-Katrin Titze: This is your second year at Tribeca.
Frédéric Boyer: Yes, my second edition as Artistic Director for the Tribeca Film Festival.

The nominees for the 31st Annual Genie Awards, Canada’s answer to the Oscars, were unveiled at simultaneous press conferences in Montreal and Toronto yeseterday. After being snubbed by the major Hollywood awards, only receiving 1 nomination and win for Paul Giamatti at the Golden Globes, Barney’s Version has been highly recognized by Canadian audiences. This is no surprise as its source material is a novel from beloved Canadian treasure Mordecai Richler and the film was partially shot in Montreal. Barney’s VersionIncendies leads the pack with 11 nominations including Best Motion Picture and populating most of the acting categories including one for Paul Giamatti for a Performace by an Actor in a Leading Role and Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Dustin Hoffman. Every year 'round about this time the Toronto International Film Festival Group announces their selections as Canada's Top Ten Feature Films and Short Films. Selected by a jury of industry professionals it's general a pretty good guide for what's happening here in any given year.
This year's selections were announced today and while I personally consider the absence of Jacob Tierney's Good Neighbours to be a significant omission it's pretty hard to argue with the titles that are actually in there. The films selected will all screen at the Tiff Bell Lightbox beginning in January. Here's the full announcement:
Toronto -- Tiff revealed the top 10 best features and top 10 best short films of 2010 this evening at the 10th annual Canada's Top Ten industry event, hosted by Peter Keleghan and Leah Pinsent. Established in 2001, Canada's Top Ten celebrates excellence in Canadian cinema and raises public awareness of Canadian achievements in film.

You might have noticed the coverage of this years ultra-sized Fantasia film festival in the Reviews and Interviews column of the site from a number of contributors taking in the festival: Mack, Shelagh, Peter, Todd, and myself, as well as a plethora of other Twitch writers hither and yon. Covering a festival of this size is a massive undertaking and I hope you enjoyed all the updates, interviews, and reviews. Rest assured there are still a few more to come. As Fantasia winds down with a screening of Metropolis Extended Edition and full orchestra, it seems to have been a raging success this year across the board. The festival announced its Jury and Audience awards, and they are below. It seems that the Subversive Serbia sidebar was a big hit, with controversial A Serbian Film getting one of the big audience awards.
