The shooting, which marked Tennessee’s deadliest mass shooting in history, left three children and three adults dead, in addition to the shooter.
“You know why it is important? Today is Psalm Sunday and I’m a very religious person and what better way to honor them and support them,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Johnny Van Zant tells Et about the band’s decision to wear ribbons on the red carpet. “Everybody say prayers for the family. Despite writing some of their generation’s biggest hits, Lynyrd Skynyrd never had a song reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Instead, the band that popularized southern rock plateaued at No. 8 after tragedy interrupted their climb up the charts. Yet, despite their struggles, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music represents a noteworthy evolution in the rock genre.
‘Sweet Home Alabama’ is the only Lynyrd Skynyrd to crack the Billboard Top 10
Released in 1974 on their second album, “Sweet Home Alabama” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for 17 weeks. Despite none of them being from Alabama, it was the band’s most successful song.
Before his unexpected death on March 5, 2023, guitarist Gary Rossington spoke to Garden & Gun about how the band came up with the hit song.

In the last few years, Cj Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later.
With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans.

Fifteen months after they last performed a live concert, Lynyrd Skynyrd returned to the stage on Friday to shake off the rust. The titans of Southern rock closed out Night One of the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam, a country-leaning multi-day festival in Panama City Beach, Florida, that featured headlining sets by Brad Paisley and Luke Bryan.
Naturally, they ended their show with “Free Bird,” that storied 1973 marathon of guitar theatrics — a song so comically requested at gigs that Jason Isbell recently warned against shouting it out at his own shows.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher got in touch with their country roots when they attended the Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, CA, on Friday and Saturday. A cowboy-hat-wearing Ashton wrapped his arms around Mila, who bared her baby bump in a black tank top and pink plaid shirt on Friday. The two did a bit of dancing in the VIP area before taking the stage with Johnny Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd to flash an American flag. On Saturday, Ashton wore overalls while listening to music with Mila, who hid her bump in a loose-fitting tank top. Mila and Ashton are both back in Southern California after taking a trip to New Orleans last weekend.

In the middle of the flight, the tiny Convair 240 ran out of fuel, and though the pilot attempted an emergency landing, the plane crashed in a forest in Gillsburg, Mississippi. The crash killed the two pilots, Skynyrd assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick and band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines. The rest of the passengers suffered injuries as well, and the group disbanded shortly after the accident.
