Then, on…I just read TV Guide. Sorry. Okay, Nxt looks like a winner this week, so let’s see if I’m right/I already know and am saying all this for dramatic effect/I’m a douche bag.

The 20th installment of AmericanaFest is in full swing in Nashville. While evening showcases and parties get most of the attention, the conference portion of the festival is just as rich a resource for incredible music, as well as insight into how it’s made.
On Thursday afternoon, NPR Music hosted a special “Turning the Tables” event at the Country Music Hall of Fame as part of the festival’s official programming. NPR Music’s Ann Powers moderated a panel featuring Carlene Carter, Shawn Colvin, Amythyst Kiah, and Maria Muldaur,...

“We gotta change around here,” Mavis Staples sang toward the very end of Wednesday night’s 18th annual Americana Honors & Awards Ceremony at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Having been presented the evening’s Inspiration Award by pioneering Civil Rights activist and Freedom Rider Ernest Patton earlier in the evening, Staples’ song was a powerful reminder that change-inspiring music-makers are, like Staples put it herself during her acceptance speech, “still carrying on.”

New Orleans musician Mac Rebennack conjured the best mojo in Dr. John the Night Tripper.
"They call me Dr. John, The Night Tripper," New Orleans voodoo pianist Mac Rebennack sang on the 1969 song "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya." With his sizzling Gris-Gris his hand, he lived and breathed New Orleans. The last of the best, Dr. John the Night Tripper, died of a heart attack "toward the break of day" on Thursday, June 6, according to the New York Times. Like Leon Redbone, who died last week, there is some dispute over Dr. John's age, various reports have him listed as 77 or 78.
"The family thanks all whom have shared his unique musical journey, and requests privacy at this time," a statement from the musician's family said. They did not say where he died, though he reportedly was resting at his Lake Pontchartrain area home, not too far from New Orleans.

Abramorama has bought global rights for John Anderson’s documentary “Horn From the Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The film uses Butterfield’s music and words, along with first-hand accounts of his family, his band mates and those closest to him. Butterfield, who died in 1987, is regarded by some as the greatest blues harmonica player of all time.
The film features appearances by David Sanborn, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur, Paul Shaffer, Michael Bloomfield, Todd Rundgren and Bob Dylan. It has played at the Mill Valley, Woods Hole and Newport Beach Film Festivals.
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Butterfield is one of a handful of musicians inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame, alongside B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Billie Holiday and Eric Clapton.

Graham Nash has plenty of experience with the vagaries of rock & roll documentaries. Take Woodstock, for one: "There were three days of really good music and the movie was three hours," he says, "so there are a lot of great performances that have never been seen apart from bootlegs." No one knows that more than Nash, since Neil Young refused to be filmed during Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's career-making set at the festival. In the film, you'll hear an announcer say, "Crosby, Stills, Nash" – but no Young. "Neil threatened to deck anybody who filmed him,...

The Coen Brothers movie is immersed in the folk scene of the early 60s in Greenwich Village, where boho survivors still recall the glory days – and lament a few of the film's flaws
Fifty years ago, the tenements, bars and coffee houses of Greenwich Village were the centre of a hip, bohemian society of beatniks and folkniks. That society has long dispersed, most of its landmarks erased by the onslaught of chain stores and fast food outlets. But enough of the Village remains intact that, by squinting in the Arctic freeze last week, it was almost possible to picture a 21-year-old Bob Dylan with his girlfriend, Suze Rotolo, braced against the cold in February 1963 for the covershot of the great Freewheelin' Bob Dylan acoustic LP.
It's not unusual to see couples re-enacting that pose on the corner of West 4th and Jones Street, says Mark Sebastian, a neighbourhood activist, musician...

Maria Muldaur, one of the finest interpreters of the American songbook, brings her new show to The Rrazz Room, Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason, Sf, December 14-15. Performances are at 8 Pm. Tickets are $30 ($35 at the door) and can be purchased at www.therrazzroom.com or directly through www.ticketweb.com or 866 468 3399.
Maria Muldaur's musical roots run deep. Born and raised in New York City's Greenwich Village, Muldaur was surrounded by bluegrass, jazz, blues and gospel music, but her very first musical influences were from the records of country and western singers. As a teenager, Maria tuned into early rhythm and blues, became interested in ‘girl groups' and formed her own, The Cashmeres, while in high school.
As pop radio became less soulful, Maria turned to the wealth of American roots music. Soon she was hanging out and joining nightly jams and song swaps called hootenannies. Maria joined The Friends of Old Timey Music,...
