The stars of Cannes sensation “Emilia Perez” got personal about the politics of their genre-bending musical on Sunday.
Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Édgar Ramírez fielded questions at a press conference for the Jacques Audiard project about the film’s setting in Mexico — a country torn by cartel violence as it heads for a summer election. A Mexican journalist asked the actors if they could reconcile the beauty of the film with the real world corruption occurring in the nation.
“I’ve been living in LA for 20 years. Mexican culture, that’s something that’s dear to my heart. I have lots of family there. There is injustice and corruption, which is true of all places in the world. But I’m grateful to Jacques because he used a lot of creative library and freedom [in this story],” said Saldaña.

Are we headed for a bon marché?
A new class of finished films and packages (unmade movies with big stars and a director attached) will travel to Cannes this week in search of cash and homes with the studios, streamers and global indie players.
The 2024 Cannes market comes equipped with some interesting contradictions. Stateside, the content buying machine is fraught. Major media stock prices are getting hammered day by day, and a new age of austerity has gripped the once free-spending tech giants. At the same time, distributors paralyzed by the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes need content to fill their slates for the end the year and the top of 2025.
“We’d agree that finished film volume isn’t as high due to the strikes, but Cannes is a much better setting for packages to begin with,” one top sales agent told Variety. “These movies can get financed out of the international marketplace,...

While fans are desperately waiting to finally see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson embrace his new look as the Captain in his upcoming solo movie Captain America 4, they aren’t too sure about Danny Ramirez’s beloved character Joaquín Torres. In fact, if anything, they are deeply worried about the latter’s character in the movie after recent updates about Captain America: Brave New World.
Captain America: Brave New World (2025) | Marvel Studios
A major reason behind this reaction from fans is the superhero costume that Ramirez would be sporting in the film after his character replaced Wilson to become the new Falcon. And as much as they hate to admit it, seeing him in his new look has fans feeling that he looks more like the Vulture from the Spider-Man saga than anywhere close to how perfect Wilson looked as the superhero.

Michael Jackson‘s “Smooth Criminal” is Satanic. It’s not a song about Satan or the occult, but it is a song about a Satanist. The King of Pop worried this could cause controversy for multiple reasons. “Smooth Criminal” wasn’t one of the biggest hits from that era of Jackson’s career, but it produced a hit cover.
Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ was inspired by a killer who worshipped Satan
Jermaine Jackson was a member of The Jackson 5. In his 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael, Through a Brother’s Eyes, Jermaine noted the Al Capone theme of the “Smooth Criminal” video. “‘Smooth Criminal’ was actually inspired by a serial killer who spread fear throughout Los Angeles and San Francisco between 1984 and 1985,” Jermaine wrote.
“Richard Ramirez, a self-confessed devil worshipper, was the ‘Night Stalker’ who took 14 lives,” he added. “In most cases, he forced his way into people...

Jakob Nowell stepped into his role as the lead singer of Sublime before thousands of fans on Saturday night, as the reunited band rocked out on the Coachella stage.

Fill the cannons with stuffed animals and watch the fluff fly as Eli Roth’s Borderlands takes the Lionsgate stage at CinemaCon! The annual entertainment event is in full swing after yesterday’s Warner Bros. panel and reveal of Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux trailer. With film and television fans fired up about upcoming releases, Lionsgate is ready to take them to a wasteland where kooky characters try to kill each other, and a fabled vault of riches awaits.
The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin wrote the initial screenplay for Borderlands but removed his name from the project after the script was rewritten by Roth, Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Joe Crombie, Chris Bremner, and Sam Levinson. Two years after Ti West's "X" unleashed aspiring movie star and blood-soaked final girl Maxine (Mia Goth) into the world, she's back in the first trailer for "MaXXXine" -- and closer than ever to achieving her dream. "You're a f**king movie star," she whispers to herself in the mirror at the end of the film's just-released first trailer, and it's easy to believe her.
A few years after driving away from the Texas farmhouse where she was nearly killed, Maxine Minx has rebranded herself as a bombshell blonde in double denim, and she's quickly building a resume in the adult film industry. The movie seems to kick off with Maxine earning a role in a legitimate horror movie, but her aspirations are soon threatened by something neither the women who work alongside her in L.A.'s sex work scene nor fans of West's franchise saw coming: the L.

Top Gun: Maverick was a monumental film for Tom Cruise as it brought back his iconic role of Pete Maverick in a sequel that managed to improve upon the original. The film became a huge success and the highest-grossing film in Cruise’s career. The film also saw Miles Teller, Glen Powell. Monica Barbaro and Danny Ramirez in key roles.

Five members of the LGBTQ community are leveling accusations of sexual assault or coercion against drag performer Shangela, who settled a previous rape case that allegedly took place on the set of an HBO series through mediation in February.
In a Rolling Stone article published on Monday, the five accusers recount incidents in which Darius Jeremy Pierce, the man behind the drag persona Shangela, who appeared in season two of Ru Paul’s Drag Race and HBO’s drag-centric show, We’re Here, allegedly assaulted individuals or attempted to get them inebriated beyond the ability to give consent. All five told the magazine that they came forward after HBO production assistant Daniel McGarrigle filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court accusing Pierce of drugging and raping him after a 2020 wrap party; the case was settled in mediation after a judge tossed two of the charges. Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

An adaptation of the popular video game, Eli Roth’s Borderlands is finally set for big screen release this summer, and the official trailer has arrived as promised this morning.
Lionsgate will be releasing Borderlands on August 9, 2024.
Watch the Borderlands movie trailer below!
It’s hard to shake the off-brand James Gunn feeling that is probably inherent to this type of movie at this point, but Roth’s Borderlands does look quite fun. Gunn is a master of threading story and deep character work into all the action, and this will likely sink or swim based on how well it does the same. For now, it looks and feels like Borderlands. And that’s a good start.
The ensemble cast for the video game movie includes Jack Black as Claptrap, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland,...

At long last, the first trailer for the "Borderlands" movie has arrived. Directed by Eli Roth, this is the long-awaited adaptation of the very popular series of video games from Gearbox and 2K. Lionsgate has been getting the film ready behind the scenes for several years, and with the release date set for this summer, the studio has finally decided to show us what they've cooked up. Check it out for yourself above.
There is much to discuss here. For anyone who has played the games, Roth and the filmmakers certainly nailed a lot of the look. Claptrap (the robot character voiced by Jack Black) looks like himself. The world looks like the world of the games. It feels right in that sense. It also feels, cinematically, like a mix between Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" films and "Mad Max." Whether or not it's anywhere near as good as those...

“Addiction is a family disease,” says Jakob Nowell, the 28-year-old son of late Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell. “Rock & roll is a family disease, man. I seek to keep it in the family.”
Jakob bears an eerie sonic and physical resemblance to his dad, who was also 28 when he died of an overdose in 1996, cutting his band’s career short on the brink of superstardom. This April, at Coachella, Jakob will make his official debut as the new lead singer and guitarist of Sublime, alongside his dad’s original bandmates, drummer Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson.

Jenna Ortega and Danny Ramirez are about to learn that it’s not an abuela’s “chancla” you have to fear, but rather what happens when you come between her and her Doritos Dinamita.
In a 60-second-long Super Bowl ad, the “Wednesday” and “Scream” star’s grandmothers — and impeccably well-dressed, pantsuited Doritos Dinamita brand characters Dina and Mita (Olivia Negron and Patricia Mauceri) — chase after Ramirez after he takes the last bag of the coveted Doritos at a local supermarket.
From crashing into Ramirez’s car on their electric scooters to breaking into an apartment for a karate fight, only to then zip-line from it and down to the streets below to continue their chase — all while still having time to coo el “nieto” — Dina and Mita prove they’ll stop at nothing to secure their spicy chips.

The trio trekked to Park City, Ut just days after news broke that a third “Top Gun” movie was in the works at Paramount, and Ramirez told Variety that the cast’s group text — fittingly named with the emojis “up” and “gun” — had been “buzzing” with questions about what’s going on with the developing project.
“Obviously, it’d be amazing to be able to do a third film in this beautiful story. But, as we learned with the second one, it’s got to be absolutely right,” Ramirez said, noting the 30-year gap between the original “Top Gun” and “Maverick.”
“Being cognizant of that, we’re excited at the prospect of everyone back in the air,” he teased.

When Connor MacLeod says “There Can Be Only One” in the original Highlander he had no idea he’d be repeating that line for years. Just when he thinks he has finally made it to be the only one, another immortal seems to pop up, challenging him for that title. How many “ones” can there be? It turns out a lot.
After the problems with making Highlander II and the anemic box office for it, it was decided to completely ignore everything surrounding that film and create a direct sequel to the original film. They dropped any mention of the planet Zeist, ignored that immortals are supposed to be aliens, and reverted the setting to seven years after the first film.
Even under the best of circumstances, films are hard to produce. How does one fare after completely rebooting the franchise? Surprisingly well. The creation of Highlander 3: The Final Dimension is far from perfect,...

Contains spoilers for Queenpins
It’s early doors in 2024 and a movie about a couple of women who have no money using coupons to defraud big companies is no.1 on Netflix UK. It figures.
Written and directed by Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, Queenpins was originally released in 2021 to Showtime and Paramount+ but now it has appeared on Netflix UK it seems to have captured a new audience.
The movie stars Kristen Bell, reunited with her The Good Place co-star Kirby Howell-Baptiste as skint friends who come up with a scheme to sell stolen coupons over the internet at a very cut down price. The women make millions but, not being criminal masterminds, they get caught and prosecuted, with Bell’s Connie serving jail time, and Howell-Baptiste’s JoJo getting a more lenient non-custodial sentence.

Edgar Ramirez takes on his second true-crime drama in Dr. Death Season 2, available now on Peacock. In Dr. Death, he plays “Miracle Man” Dr. Paolo Macchiarini (pictured above), a charming thoracic surgeon renowned for his innovative procedures. When investigative journalist Benita Alexander (Mandy Moore) approaches him for a story, the line between personal and professional begins to blur, changing her life forever. As she learns how far Paolo will go to protect his secrets, a group of doctors halfway across the world make shocking discoveries of their own that call everything about Paolo into question. The season is based on the Miracle Man season of Wondery’s Dr. Death true-crime podcast. Before the Peacock drama, Ramirez played fashion icon Gianni Versace in American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. These two characters — one a victim, one a villain — couldn’t be more different. Ramirez tells TV Insider that when...

The story of Peacock’s Dr. Death in its second season is really two stories, which intersect through duplicitous surgeon Paolo Macchiarini (Edgar Ramírez).
In one, a respected journalist (Mandy Moore’s Benita) falls in love with a con man, and then eventually retakes control of her life by taking him down. In the other, doctors grow suspicious of, and then work to stop, a celebrated colleague whose supposedly miraculous procedures are actually killing his patients.
Late in the season, a skeptical reporter tells Benita that the former narrative is the more interesting one, since it’s simpler, juicier, more relatable. But the show, created by Ashley Michel Hoban, only really comes alive in the latter. Stitched together, the two halves make for a lumpy, if occasionally gripping, whole.
Though he’s the reason we’re all here, Paolo himself remains something of an enigma. The premiere foreshadows his downfall...

When the original Highlanderbecame a sleeper hit on home video it was only a matter of time before a sequel was made. Even though Connor had won the Gathering and had once again become mortal surely there was a way to get him to pick up the sword once again. Christopher Lambert was game to reprise the character again so why not move forward with another film?
Well if you’ve seen Highlander II (which we did a memorable episode of Awfully Good on) then you know why they should have thought better about going back to the Highlander well. In an experience that many would describe as frustrating maddening and downright awful Highlander II would set out to fundamentally destroy the first film. The director tried to have his name taken off of it. The lead of the film wanted to drop out. Let’s find out exactly Wtf Happened To This Film.

Cuba is roughly 1,300 miles away, but in a rehearsal space in downtown Manhattan, it doesn’t feel all that far. A gripping episode of ABC’s “20/20” delves into a spine-chilling case that unfolded in Laredo, Texas, where Melissa Ramirez and Claudine Luera were discovered murdered and abandoned on the city’s outskirts. Authorities were quick to recognize the eerie similarities between the crime scenes, leading them to a nightmarish conclusion: a serial killer was haunting the city’s red-light district.
As the investigation deepened, the shocking truth emerged – one of their own, border patrol supervisor Juan David Ortiz, was actively assisting in the hunt for the very serial killer he was pretending to help catch. ABC News correspondent John Quiñones takes viewers through the compelling narrative of the case, offering exclusive insights into the investigation.
The two-hour special unfolds with key witness testimony, police body camera footage, and an in-depth exploration of Ortiz’s nearly nine-hour interrogation, which eventually led to his astonishing confession.

The tentative agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP has the support of a major power player: President Joe Biden.
Biden weighed in on the agreement in a statement Thursday, hailing the deal as one that “allows our entertainment industry to continue telling the stories of America.”
“Collective bargaining works,” Biden said in the statement. “I applaud SAG-AFTRA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for working together in good faith towards an agreement that allows our entertainment industry to continue telling the stories of America. When both sides come to the table to negotiate in earnest they can make businesses stronger and allow workers to secure pay and benefits that help them raise families and retire with dignity. Over the last three years, workers have won historic victories that ensure record pay, record benefits, and an economy that grows from the middle out and bottom up. SAG-AFTRA members will...

Everyone has a high school movie that rings uncomfortably true to their own experiences as a teenager. For some, it's a bitingly satirical portrait like "Heathers" or "Mean Girls," while for others, it's a brutally honest dramedy like "The Edge of Seventeen." But for me, there's only one film that really captures what my time was like as a non-Mormon attending a predominantly Mormon high school in a small Utah town in the early 2000s, and that's "Napoleon Dynamite." True, writer/director Jared Hess' 2004 cult hit takes place in the filmmaker's hometown of Preston, Idaho, but ... well, let's just say that if you know anything about small-town Utah and Idaho Mormon culture, then you know they weren't exactly worlds apart when the film was made.
I was fortunate enough to have graduated from high school literal weeks before "Napoleon Dynamite" arrived, which spared me from having to listen to my...

Jennifer Gamez and Kellie Marsalli were strangers until a chance encounter at AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Friday night. When someone says “There can be only one” what immediately pops into your head? For just about everyone it will be the movie Highlander. That’s how ingrained into pop culture the franchise has become. It’s impressive considering that the original film was actually a massive flop. Yep, the first film died at the box office and seemed destined to fall into obscurity. But just like the immortals in the film, it would rise from the dead and live on. The path to the first film wasn’t without its own pitfalls and near-death experiences. Let’s find out what happened to the 1986 film Highlander here on Wtf Happened To This Movie.

Social Distortion have announced a batch of 40th anniversary vinyl reissues of their 1983 debut album, Mommy’s Little Monster, arriving November 10th via Craft Recordings.
The same label handled a 2019 reissue of Mommy’s Little Monster, though the new 40th anniversary reissue campaign will return the album to print in a smattering of color variants: black, white, ruby red, silver, clear smoke, and black and white marble.
The latest reissue also features newly remastered audio sourced from the original analog tapes, presenting the album in Aaa (all-analog) fidelity, per Craft Recordings’ typical boutique approach.
Mommy’s Little Monster captured the humble beginnings for Mike Ness and company, who would go on to become one of the most celebrated punk acts of the 1990s and beyond. Before that, the band was a pioneering force in Orange County’s legendary hardcore scene.
The story of the album begins with Social Distortion’s 1981 single “Mainliner,...

Horror anthology Satanic Hispanics assembles five Latin American horror filmmakers to celebrate Hispanic talent in front of and behind the camera, curating tales that spotlight Hispanic myths and legends. Uniting four tales of terror is Satanic Hispanics‘ wraparound from producer/director Mike Mendez.
In Mendez’s wraparound, a police raid uncovers a grisly crime scene full of dead bodies. They take the sole survivor, a man that refers to himself as “The Traveler” (Efren Ramirez), into custody for answers. The Traveler attempts to explain the bizarre events that led up to his capture to skeptical detectives Gibbons (Sonya Eddy) and Arden (Greg Grunberg). He entertains them with four tales of supernatural encounters, hoping to persuade them to let him go.
Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on September 14 (tickets on sale now), Bloody Disgusting spoke with the filmmaker about the challenges of curating an anthology and helming a wraparound...

It might seem contradictory that the rise of short video clip popularity coincided with the popularity of long form journalism, but Netflix may be the common factor. The streaming network didn’t invent true crime documentation, but it helped shape the style, and keeps a vast repository of the hottest cold cases.
Real-life crime stories are riveting, whether the watcher is concerned about avoiding such events or solving them. There is something for every taste, from feature-length documentaries to full series. Not all crimes are equal under the laws of public opinion, but these are some of the most dangerously addictive true crime offerings currently available on Netflix.
Making a Murderer (2015)
Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi’s 10-part documentary on Steven Avery catapulted Netflix to the top of the True Crime streaming game. Making a Murderer spurred the fascination with the genre more than any other series. Avery served 18 years...
