George Alagiah, one of the BBC’s longest serving journalists and a fixture on U.K. TV news for more than three decades, has died. He was 67.
The BBC confirmed that Alagiah — who had been diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014 — passed away on Monday, July 24.
“Across the BBC, we are all incredibly sad to hear the news about George. We are thinking of his family at this time,” said BBC director-general Tim Davie.
“George was one of the best and bravest journalists of his generation who reported fearlessly from across the world as well as presenting the news flawlessly. He was more than just an outstanding journalist, audiences could sense his kindness, empathy and wonderful humanity. He was loved by all and we will miss him enormously.”
Born in Sri Lanka before moving to Ghana and then England in childhood, Alagiah joined the BBC as a foreign affairs correspondent in 1989 and then became Africa correspondent.

Ant and Dec have confirmed the reason they were forced to pull out of hosting duties for the new spinoff of Britain’s Got Talent.
The British duo were originally expected to present the new ITV talent show, Britain’s Got Talent: The Ultimate Magician.
However, a spokesperson for the series told MailOnline on Wednesday (12 October) that the two were “unable to film” after having become “unwell”.
Instead, they have been replaced by magician Stephen Mulhern.
A representative for the pair later informed The Sun that “Ant and Dec have tested for Covid and unfortunately have both tested positive” and “will be postponing work commitments whilst they recover”.
This also means that Ant McPartlin, 47, and Dec Donnelly, 46, will no longer be in attendance at Britain’s 27th National Television Awards on Thursday (13 October).
Up against Alison Hammond, Bradley Walsh and Graham Norton, the duo are, once again, in the running for the TV presenter award,...

Chris Colfer has seemingly enjoyed a dig at former Glee co-star Lea Michele, saying that he won’t be seeing her Broadway performance of Funny Girl.
The two starred as on-again-off-again best friends on the hit musical series, which began in 2009. However, five years after its six-season run, Michele was accused of “bullying” behaviour by several Glee alumni.
While Colfer has remained relatively quiet about the allegations, he appeared to allude to the drama during a recent episode of The Michelle Collins Show.
Host Michelle Collins asked him to guess what she was doing that evening, suggesting he should join her. The 32-year-old responded: “Oh no, are you seeing Funny Girl?”
Collins laughingly answered “yes”, before Colfer said: “Oh... My day suddenly just got so full.”
He added: “I saw Six last night, and that was amazing.”
“So, you’re not seeing it [Funny Girl] is my guess, while you’re in town?...

U.K. broadcaster the BBC has recorded an overall profit of £227 million ($314.2 million) for the financial year 2020/2021, an upswing from the previous year’s £119 million loss, the organization’s annual report has revealed.
The surge is largely fuelled by the BBC’s main income earner, TV license fees collected from the public, rising from £3.52 billion to £3.75 billion. In August 2020, people over the age of 75 were required to pay for TV licenses, with few exemptions.
The corporation also reduced the salaries it paid to staff earning more than £150,000 a year by an average of 10%, including star soccer commentator Gary Lineker and BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball. However, the top 10 on-air presenters all continue to be white. Some 20% of the talent list are from ethnic minorities backgrounds, an improvement of 2% from last year, but the pay gap for minorities has increased from 3% in the last financial year to 3.3%.

The BBC has claimed the government plans to decriminalize license fee evasion in the UK could blow a £300M ($370M) hole in its programming budget and will lead to “significant cuts” to front line services.
The BBC made its case in a submission to the government’s consultation on scrapping criminal sanctions, including jail sentences, for people who fail to pay the £154.50 annual license fee.
