New on DVD/Blu-ray: '6 Souls,' an Overdue Surprise for Horror Fans, Leads a Slow Week for New Movies
6 Souls - Radius TWC - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Mans Marlind, Bjorn Stein Cast: Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jeffrey DeMunn,Frances Conroy, Brooklyn Proulx. Full cast + crew 6 Souls - under its previous title of Shelter - first hit theaters back in March of 2010. That was in Japan, however. For some reason it took about three years for it to find a release in the U.S. That kind of delay is usually the sign of a stinker, but that's not quite the case here. 6 Souls isn't a grand slam, but there's plenty of reason it shouldn't have taken this long to journey to our shores. Some really standout performances by Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Jeffrey DeMunn, and an intriguing story of a psych patient whose multiple...

Watch 4 new clips from 6 Souls (a.k.a. Shelter) starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, this is a seriously eerie film which I managed to see recently via VOD, and I can highly recommend it if you're up for some Skeleton Key-like storytelling. There is one major horror release moving to DVD, Blu-Ray and other formats today, along with a minor independent title. Most have heard of Piranha 3D. But for those who have missed the theatrical screening, here is your chance to own the title. This horror thriller would put thousands of tiny man-eating fish in your living room, as long as gratuitous nudity does not hamper your good time. There are a great number of special features on the Blu-Ray for this title e.g. deleted scenes, featurettes. However, the extra features on the DVD are sparse. More details on the special features for both formats are below.

Title: Piranha 3D Directed By: Alexandre Aja Starring: Elisabeth Shue, Steven R. McQueen, Jerry O’Connell, Jessica Szohr, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Kelly Brook, Riley Steele, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, Brooklynn Proulx, Sage Ryan I like campy horror flicks - a lot, probably too much. Piranha 3D looked to be everything I’d fall for; I’m a huge fan of director Alexandre Aja’s The Hills Have Eyes, thought writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg’s last film, Sorority Row, was a ton of fun and am always eager to check out new and more grotesque ways of killing off characters. The problem is, Piranha lacks the fear and emotion of The Hills Have Eyes, [...]...

While Dimension Films had just started their campaign for Piranha 3D with the trailer premiering in 3-D in front of James Cameron's Avatar, the studio has apparently got cold feet pulling the Alex Aja directed remake from its April 16 slot. The La Times is reporting that it has nothing to do with the Weinstein Company's recent financial woes, but that the studio is fearing the power of Lionsgate's teen comic book adaptation Kick-Ass, which appeals to the exact same audience. The new date? August at the earliest Brutal. Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Dina Meyer, Brooklynn Proulx, Quinn Lord, Jessica Szohr, Jerry O'Connell, Paul Scheer, Cody Longo, Riley Steele, Eli Roth, Ricardo Chavira all star.

Some shocking news came out of the Tiff screening of The Hole 3D when a fan asked Joe Dante why he didn't direct Dimension's Piranha 3D remake. Dancing off of the idiotic question, Dante somehow flipped the conversation onto the way Alex Aja filmed it, revealing that it's not actually shot in 3D. The iconic director, whose film The Hole was shot on set in 3D, explained that Aja filmed the remake with one camera and will be digitally making it 3D in post, while adding CGI piranha that will be "Pixar-like 3D." How does that make you feel? Kinda hurts, doesn't it? I guess we'll see how good 2D-turned-3D looks come April 16, 2010. While writing this review, I became unstuck in time. Suddenly, I was seeing stars on Halloween 1988 in New York City, then shooting off to Australia to meet people in February 1993 followed by Christmas caroling edged with snowflakes in 1974 West Virginia. Before I knew what I was doing, I was watching The Hunger in a Manhattan screening room in 1983. And then Chicago, briefly, in the 1990s, don’t know exactly when—July something. The women kept changing. But they were the same in that they all married someone else, not me. What’s up with that?
Was it something I said?
Or more likely done (or maybe not done or will yet do)? I blame time travel. You see, in studying time travel romance (as presented in this movie), I have discovered/will discover that going missing at (in)convenient times can stress a relationship. “Honey, can you take out the trash?...

I want to begin by telling you up front that what I am about to say may shock some of you. In fact, some of you may choose never to read my reviews again. Prepare yourselves, because I am about to make one bold statement… The Time Traveler’S Wife is one of the best love stories Ever told. There. Now, that wasn’t that bad, was it? With that said, I would liked to have seen a few better casting choices.
The film was based on Audrey Niffenegger’s novel of the same name, adapted for the screen by Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, Jacob’S Ladder) and directed by Robert Schwentke (Tattoo, Flight Plan). At one hour and 47 minutes in length, the film can feel a bit slow at times in the first two acts, but the pace of the third act certainly makes up for having patience. The...

Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams in The Time Traveler's Wife
Photo: New Line Cinema Yes, I found some enjoyment in The Time Traveler's Wife. No, I didn't mind the fact it depended on my acceptance of a little girl's (slightly creepy) friendship with a naked man that suddenly appears in the woods only to disappear seconds later. After all, it's called The Time Traveler's Wife and considering a little girl's love for the mysterious naked man from the woods is the only real hurdle I had to jump over (outside of time travel of course), I found myself accepting the film's premise, the story it served and by the time it came to an end I got caught up in the romance. Shame on me, I know, but it's the truth. Henry (Eric Bana) suffers from a genetic infliction that causes him to spontaneously travel in time. He could end...
