With Breaking Bad long gone and Mad Men set to head off the air in spring 2015, the executives at AMC know that they cannot sustain their impressive growth purely through the success of The Walking Dead. That’s why the cable network announced on Wednesday that they will push forward with scripted comedy and are developing around a half-dozen new shows.
Among these potential hits is Random Acts, an adaptation of Andrea Abbate’s play about thirty-something girlfriends Katie and Lisa – who make their living as contract killers. Abbate will write and executive produce the single-camera comedy, which could be on the air as early as 2015. Further, executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) are helming Sober Buddies, about a pro surfer turned sober coach who has to deal with own problems as he goes off the wagon.
Meanwhile, AMC greenlit its first series pilot, the intriguing We Hate Paul Revere.

Kevin Smith, late-night TV host?
We could easily see that. AMC is developing a late-night talk show titled Hollywood Babble-On, starring Smith and the co-host of his popular podcast, Ralph Garman. AMC also has renewed Smith’s docu-series Comic Book Men for a fourth season. And that’s not all: AMC is teaming with Smith on the development of a docuseries featuring collector Comic Book Men regular Robert Bruce, following him and other expects as they comb the country searching real estate sales, auction houses and flea markets to find rare items (sort of like Antiques Roadshow for geeks).

Ahead of its upfront presentation today, AMC has unveiled the projects it has in development, among them the network's first scripted comedy "We Hate Paul Revere," which has been order to pilot and will shoot later this year for 2015 series consideration. "We Hate Paul Revere" is written, executive produced and starring Ethan Sandler and Adrian Wenner ("My Boys," "Whitney"), and is about brothers Hugh and Ebenezer Moody, who struggle to find their place as they live in the shadow of history in Colonial Boston. AMC's in a transition moment, with "Breaking Bad" over and "Mad Men" coming to an end. "The Walking Dead" is a mammoth success and has spawned one of two upcoming spin-offs (the other being "Better Call Saul," which premieres this fall), but the network's in search of fresh hits. AMC recently hired directors for the two drama pilots it's shooting this year, the period medical drama "Knifeman" and the post-apocalyptic "Galyntine,...

I hear top AMC brass will be in Los Angeles next week for the network’s annual round of producer meetings where the writers/producers behind scripts identified by the cable network as its strongest pilot contenders are invited to present their projects. The pilot script showcase, nicknamed by agents and producers “bake-off,” includes a series of presentations, in which the auspices of the selected projects lay out their vision for their show beyond the pilot with the help of visual aids, including demo reels. I hear the scripts that made it to this year’s event include dramas Raiders, from writer Evan Wright (Generation Kill) and Scott Free; and Line Of Sight, from Brotherhood creator Blake Masters and Fox TV Studios; and comedy We Hate Paul Revere, from writer-actors Ethan Sandler and Adrian Wenner (Whitney). Raiders, exec produced by Wright, Ridley Scott and David Zucker, takes place during World War II.

AMC has scooped up a lot of new shows since its dawn into our modern lives with Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Most acquisitions, perhaps excluding the now mega-huge Walking Dead, have been decisively unsurprising head-nodders — an old-timey show about trains; a series about a (one; 1) killing; something set in the eighties and another thing in the 1770s; a pair of murder mysteries; an Area 51 project; a legal thriller; another period drama, albeit interestingly about a Native American college football team. Now, at last, an honest-to-goodness eyebrow-raiser: "AMC is heading to Colonial Boston for a comedy project, now in development. Titled We Hate Paul Revere, it is written and executive produced by writer-actors Ethan Sandler and Adrian Wenner (Whitney). It centers on two brothers living in Colonial Boston who are not fans of local industrialist and activist Paul Revere." Well ... wow.

Exclusive: After exploring 1960s New York City with Mad Men and the Nebraska territory circa 1865 with Hell On Wheels, AMC is heading to Colonial Boston for a comedy project, now in development. Titled We Hate Paul Revere, it is written and executive produced by writer-actors Ethan Sandler and Adrian Wenner (Whitney). It centers on two brothers living in Colonial Boston who are not fans of local industrialist and activist Paul Revere. Sandler and Wenner, repped by UTA and Thruline, have been writing and performing together since meeting at Northwestern University. Their play Epitaph, directed by Betsy Thomas, won awards at the HBO Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe festival. After establishing its original brand with drama series, AMC has been quietly looking to expand into comedy. (Over the past two years, the network successfully added unscripted programming to the mix.) AMC is yet to pick up its first half-hour scripted series,...
