Idris Elba is poised to fight for survival against a ravenous lion when Beast roars into theaters this weekend. And Steven Spielberg’s shark classic, Jaws, swims back into theaters next month with a first-ever IMAX and Real 3D re-release. To round out our first week of Movie of the Day I thought I’d start another trend for the feature. If Monday’s are to be “New Movie Monday” then Friday’s are reserved for the “Friday Night Fear Flick”. This weeks is the fantastic Burning Bright.
When 20 year old Kelly wakes late at night during a hurricane, she finds a hungry tiger stalking her through the halls of her home. With every door and window boarded up from the outside and her stepfather nowhere to be found, Kelly fights frantically to stay one step ahead of the killer beast while dragging her autistic brother Tom through the house, but with every turn the situation becomes more complicated and desperate.
Burning Bright is one of those films whose concept sounds so amazing that it has to qualify as a must-see movie, and luckily it doesn’t disappoint. The film starts off innocently enough,...

Exclusive: Nu Image/Millennium has acquired Playing Dirty, a spec script written by Richard Blaney and Gregory Small. Mandalay Pictures’ Cathy Schulman and Adam Stone will produce, and they closed the deal with Millennium’s Mark Gill. Millennium and Mandalay recently collaborated on the indie hit Bernie. In Playing Dirty, a young law student learns to let loose and explore his adventurous side after meeting a sexy and mysterious stranger. After some exhilarating nights of debauchery, car chases and threesomes, things go awry when the student finds himself the target of her psychotic plans. Blaney and Small previously wrote Someone In The Dark, a teenage Body Heat which is at DreamWorks with Carlos Brooks attached to direct. Original Artists made the deal for the writers, who are also repped by 59 Management. The film will be fast-tracked by Millennium, which has several plum titles at Cannes with the Lee Daniels-directed The Paperboy premiering tomorrow,...

Director: Carlos Brooks.
Writers: Christine Coyle Johnson, Julie Prendiville Roux, and David Higgins.
Burning Bright was loosely created from William Blake's 18th Century poem called "The Tyger," which begins " Tyger! Tyger! burning bright/ In the forests of the night,/ What immortal hand or eye/ Could frame thy fearful symmetry?" Just as symmetrical is Briana Evigan as Kelly who tries to survive a night with a tiger on the loose. If that was enough, then a hurricane brings further terror in this exciting but repetitive popcorn flick from Lionsgate (2010).
Kelly has just lost her mother to a suspicious suicide and now she must help with her brother Tom (Charlie Tahan) who is autistic. Kelly must also deal with a greedy and manipulative stepfather who already has a series of plans for his ex-wife's inheritance. Strange how his plans go into effect right after her death with no period of grief.

Director: Carlos Brooks. Review: Adam Wing. It was my girlfriend who explained to me why Carlos Brooks' debut feature is called Burning Bright, apparently it’s a reference to a William Blake poem published in 1794. Glad we cleared that one up. The concept is nothing if not unique, a young girl (Briana Evigan) is trapped inside a house with her autistic brother during a hurricane while being menaced by a man-eating tiger. You read that right, a man-eating tiger. It might read ridiculous on paper but it works, probably because Burning Bright introduces the scariest tiger since Tony started enticing small children with his sugar coated cornflakes. As with all good horror movies, you also need a strong female lead and Briana Evigan (Sorority Row) more than makes up for her annoying little brother. It feels wrong to insult a child actor portraying an autistic boy, but even older...

Kristen Stewart is preparing to spend the next five months shooting the two-part The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, the final adaptation in Stephenie Meyer’s vampire series. But she’s two potential gigs once shooting wraps in March 2011.
The first, via Production Weekly and Bloody-Disgusting, is the role of Talia in DreamWorks’ teen thriller Someone in the Dark about a young man from the wrong side of the tracks caught in a game of cat-and-mouse with a mysterious woman (Stewart) and her dangerous stepfather. Carlos Brooks (Burning Bright) is set to direct.
Production Weekly is also reporting Stewart is considering a part in Little America, a chase movie about a 16-year-old prostitute who accidentally kills a gang member and the truck driver she bonds with on the run. Stewart is interested in the young prostitute role — though it seems somewhat similar to her Welcome the Rileys part — and Josh Brolin is circling the trucker.

Not a lot of details are known, but apparently The Twilight Saga's Kristen Stewart is eying her next project - Someone in the Dark, a teen thriller to be directed by Carlos Brooks for DreamWorks.
The news came in the form of a tweet from Production Weekly that simply said, Kristen Stewart mentioned for the role of Talia in the thriller “Someone In the Dark” plans are to film in March after "Breaking Dawn" wraps.
Brooks is riding high on mostly positive reviews (including ours here) for his "man-eating tiger trapped in a house with a couple of kids during a hurricane" Burning Bright. The script for Someone in the Dark was penned by Richard Blaney and Gregory Small with Brooks also signed on as Executive Producer.
As we said, not a lot to go on, but considering Stewart's bankability, we expect to hear lots more if she does indeed join the project.

There are some awesome new DVD and Blu-ray releases this week, so head down to your nearest movie emporium and snap these up pronto:
Kick-Ass (dir. Matthew Vaughn, 2010) – Arguable one of the most original, funny action packed super hero movies we’ve ever seen, this tale of a young boy wanting to make the wrongs in the world right will have you laughing from beginning to end. Starring Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and the C Word swearing 13 year old Chloe Moretz, the controversial entertainment and originality of narrative is more than likely going to top the charts.
The Last Song (dir. Julie Anne Robinson, 2010) – Another soppy love story starring a singer with her own songs creating the soundtrack. Miley Cyrus takes on a more serious role and tries to rekindle her love for the father who she’s become resentful of after her parent’s divorce. Perfect for the lovers of tear-jerkers.

First impressions are deceiving with this Carlos Brooks release entitled Burning Bright. It starts off cliché enough, with the stereotypical foreboding opening of 'unsuspecting character' whose pride leads to mortal danger. It seems as though this film is going to follow the tried and overdone formula of most horror/thriller B movies, with half-hearted characters and gratuitous gore to supplement bad writing and production, but 20 minutes in, it's evident this one's quite different.
Burning Bright centers around Kelly (Briana Evigan) and her 12 year old autistic brother Tom (Charlie Tahan), who are trapped in their home with a blood-thirsty tiger while a hurricane rages outdoors. Evigan does a great job as this sensitive but tough character, who is forced to battle her own mounting problems, in addition to the menacing tiger. If I only had one reason to recommend this film, it would simply be to just watch her. Staying true...

With just a little knowledge of English poetry you may get the impression from the title that this film has something to do with tigers and you’d be right. One tiger in particular, as the film has a premise that screams high concept exploitation. Kelly (Briana Evigan) awakes from a nightmare to a real life nightmare where she is trapped in her house with a very angry and very hungry Bengali tiger.
Kelly’s stepfather Johnny (Garret Dillahunt) has bought the tiger, using the money set aside for Kelly’s autistic brother’s special schooling, as he is planning to open a safari park at his house. This part of the film is a little far fetched and, as it is probably immediately obvious, this and a few other plot points are a little contrived which makes the plot a little hard to swallow. It is a testament to...

As you can see in my review of “Burning Bright” here, I rather enjoyed it. Ignore the fact that it’s a movie about a tiger in a house (something which Carlos elaborates on below) and instead take it for what it is – a tiger in a house movie. Wait, that came out wrong. Err, well just trust me – it’s really good. Here’s what Carlos had to say about the film (there’s the odd minor spoiler, but nothing to start ripping off your trousers, pulling out your hair or screaming about): Gazz Ogden: Hi Carlos, how are you today? Carlos Brooks: Good thanks, you? Go: Great thanks. Firstly, I just want to say that I really really enjoyed the film. Cb: That’s great, thank you, it’s fantastic to hear you say that. Go: So, to start off, how did you get involved with...

Briana Evigan, daughter of 80’s TV icon Greg Evigan has been slowly been making a name for herself in Hollywood with roles in movies such as Step-Up 2 (a guilty pleasure of mine), S. Darko and Sorority Row.
Her latest film, Burning Bright, will receive it’s UK premiere at London’s Film4 FrightFest next week, before hitting DVD on September 6th 2010. Briana took time out to talk to Blogomatic3000 about Burning Bright, as well as her other forthcoming movies Mother’s Day and Monster Heroes. We even discuss the Step-Up movies!
First off, Burning Bright… the film had me hooked when it was described to me as “girl trapped in a house with a tiger”
[Laughs] Yeah, you’re like, “Really?”
Oh yes… How did you react when you first read the script?
I was a little bit worried about it, I wasn’t crazy about the script when I first read it.

Believe it or not, director Carlos Brooks’ acclaimed suspense yarn “Burning Bright” is a movie about a girl who must protect her autistic little brother from the carnivorous clutches of an angry tiger that has managed to sneak inside their home during a hurricane. With a plot like that, how could you possibly go wrong? I’ll be the first to admit that I thought the film sounded remarkably cheesy, that is, until I happened upon the official trailer, which has been carefully embedded below. Call me crazy, but this one appears a lot stronger than the synopsis makes it out to be. If you feel the need to doubt me, check out the clip for yourself. Burning Bright is about a young woman trapped in a big, old, boarded up house. In the middle of nowhere. In her undies. With a Bengal tiger that hasn’t been fed for two weeks. And an autistic brother to protect. That she can’t touch. During a hurricane. For realsies. Hit the jump to see what I thought.
Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
The title is taken from William Blake’s poem The Tyger and I guess if it was called Tiger, Tiger people would have thought it was about a bar full of footballers and ex-Big Brother contestants.
Anyhoo, this tiger-centric tale is triggered when Johnny (Garret Dillahunt – The Last House on the Left and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles *blubs*) buys the Bengal beast from a bitch tits-less Meatloaf in a shady roadside deal.

Burning Bright is one of those films whose concept sounds so amazing that it qualifies (in my opinion) as a must-see movie, and luckily it doesn’t disappoint. The film starts off innocently enough, with Garret Dillahunt buying a circus tiger from Meat Loaf in order to open a safari park!

Burning Bright is a film from director Carlos Brooks that involves a hurricane and an escaped Bengal tiger. A brother and sister are left alone in a boarded up house to fend for themselves when this large beast is accidentally, or purposely released. The film uses a live tiger with very little CG and Brooks says of the production "I couldn’t believe how virtually everybody was totally repulsed by...

We've all seen home invasion flicks before, but what if said invader this time around was a ... was a ... well, yes, what if it was a tiger? We're not talking about a CGI animal either; we mean a real life flesh and blood maneater! We know! We are giddy, too!
That's the truly absurd premise for director Carlos Brooks' new film Burning Bright, which stars Briana Evigan, Garret Dillahunt, and Charlie Tahan. Look for Lionsgate to fondle this pussy on DVD this summer. In the interim check out the goods below courtesy of Sobini Films.

Word just in from the Afm is that Carlos Brooks' Burning Bright is being sold under the new title of Ravenous . (Not to be confused with the 1999 film of the same name starring Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle and David Arquette) The film centers on Briana Evigan ( Sorority Row , Mother's Day ) and her autistic little brother both trapped in a house during a hurricane with a tiger. Last House On The Left 's Garret Dillahunt is responsible for unleashing the beast in the house to stalk Evigan. Do you remember those books that R.L. Stine wrote for those kids that thought they were a little too old for .Goosebumps. ? Or anything out of the library of V.C. Andrews? Those are the stories that the term .teen thriller. stirs up in my head and it looks like Dreamworks is headed down the same dark and scary path of angsty teen spookiness. Variety reports that Someone in the Dark was picked up by Dreamworks on spec from no-name writers Richard Blaney and Gregory Small, and immediately attached an almost as no-name director Carlos Brooks, whose latest film's star power is a guy everyone knows as .Bitch tits. and is named after a sub par meat entree. However, Gavin Polone is signed onto Someone as producer, whose most recent success was Zombieland, a brilliant film in all respects from a relatively unknown director. The pairing of Polone and ...

One upcoming film sure to raise eyebrows based on concept alone is Burning Bright . In it, a young woman (Briana Evigan) and her autistic brother (Charlie Tahan) find themselves trapped in a house, during a hurricane with a hungry tiger. The man responsible? Blame actor Garrett Dillahunt. "Have you ever driven through the South like, 'Come to Johnny's Rattlesnake Pit!'? He's that guy and he's got a wild animal farm," the actor tells ShockTillYouDrop.com while promoting his upcoming film The Last House on the Left . That's just the set up. Why and how a tiger winds up locked away with Evigan shall remain a mystery for now. Dillahunt, however, said he had a blast on the film. "I like [director] Carlos Brooks, he did Quid Pro Quo . And Briana Evigan,...

"I wanted to do something completely original and different that I hadn't seen before," said Carlos Brooks of his feature directorial debut. Though grounded in the traditions of detective fiction and film noir, Brooks' "Quid Pro Quo" is indeed something wholly its own; a film that lives inside those genres' boundaries while carving its own unique place outside them. In the film, Nick Stahl plays Isaac, a paraplegic public radio host who gets an anonymous tip about a guy who tried to bribe a doctor into amputating his leg. Researching the story introduces him to an underground (and evidently authentic) community of "wannabes" who desperately wish to be paralyzed, and to a mysterious blonde named Fiona (Vera Farmiga).
Before the thriller elements begin to congeal, "Quid Pro Quo" is particularly appealing in its detailed view of Isaac's day-to-day existence; the way in which, for instance, he can't...

Not long after meeting Nick Stahl's public-radio reporter in Quid Pro Quo, the feature debut of writer-director Carlos Brooks, museum conservator Vera Farmiga invites Stahl back to her apartment and slips into something a little less comfortable. Disappearing into her bedroom, she emerges wearing a cream-colored vintage negligee and a pair of leg braces. Watching from his wheelchair, Stahl's paraplegic character isn't sure how to respond. Having met Farmiga in the course of investigating wannabes, men and women who fantasize about paralysis, he can't be too surprised. Unfortunately, viewers probably won't be either. Brooks plunges into the thick of a largely unfamiliar subculture in Quid Pro Quo, but the journey involves a series of well-telegraphed twists and turns—one of them, a bit of fantasy involving a pair of magic shoes, at odds with the tone of the rest of the film. Torn between his duty to report...

- This year's Spectrum section has been sectioned off into two: which if you ask me just makes pure logistical sense. Among the list are some regular Sundance faces and notably many first time filmmakers in this non-competitive category. The highly anticipated documentary film from Morgan Spurlock (that's him above on the camel) gets featured in doc section - after taking on McD's this time out he does what the U.S president has failed to do: actually try and find Bin Laden. Another film that will generate smiles is Stephen Walker's Young@Heart - imagine Coldplay sung by your grandma... Sony Pictures Classics picked up those rights a while back.
