Fresh off her co-write on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, Arlo Parks appeared on Friday’s Tonight Show to perform her own “Devotion.”
The Nineties rock-inspired track features on Parks’ most recent LP My Soft Machine, one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of 2023.
“‘Devotion’ to me is a song about feeling so in love it’s almost like being ripped apart, there’s an intensity, a wildness and a tenderness,” the British singer previously said of the track in a statement. “This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made,...

The Pixies have parted ways with bassist Paz Lenchantin after a decade-long run with the band. They’ll be joined by former Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson when they kick off a European tour on March 8 in Dublin, Ireland.
The news of Lenchantin’s exit from the group came via a curiously dry statement from the group. “We’re grateful for Paz’s many contributions,” they wrote, “and wish her all the very best going forward.”

Here’s one for the ’90s indie rock lovers: The Breeders have shared “Divine Mascis,” a long-lost version of their Last Splash cut “Divine Hammer” that features Dinosaur Jr. axeman J Mascis on lead vocals. Check it out below.
You’d think Mascis would be playing guitar on the song, since he’s one of the most inventive and beloved players of the original indie rock scene. That’s what The Breeders expected, too, when they sent “Divine Hammer” to the artist way back in the day.
“At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’” Kelley Deal told Uncut. “But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I...

On first listen, the second album from London singer-songwriter Arlo Parks sounds like something to luxuriate in; Parks sings and lays down poetry over plush textures and simmering beats. But a closer listen reveals that these pillowy structures are, in fact, cushions against the blows of modern life—bulwarks that keep Parks’ self, the “soft machine” referenced in the album title, moving without cutting herself off or suffering too much long-term damage.

The dream of the ’90s was alive at Coachella Sunday when The Breeders welcomed their successors The Linda Lindas to the stage during their set for backing vocals on the former band’s song “Saints.”
“Saints” appears on The Breeders’ seminal 1993 album Last Splash, meaning it’s at least a decade older than any member of The Linda Lindas. But the age gap didn’t stop the young punks from rocking out alongside the indie rock legends.
While footage of the two bands together at Coachella hasn’t made the rounds on social media as of yet, The Linda Lindas and The Breeders also performed “Saints” together at a warm-up show in Pomona, California last week. With all four members of The Linda Lindas behind Kelley and Kim Deal, you can tell they’re stoked to be performing alongside one of their many great idols.

Teenage singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has achieved one of the fastest ascents of any artist in history. Since January she has racked up three top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, two of which debuted at number-one (“Drivers License” and “Good 4 U”). And she performed on “Saturday Night Live” on May 15. All of that was before the May 21 release of her debut album “Sour.” So is her new collection worthy of all that advance hype?
SEEIs Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ already a lock for Grammys in 2022?
Judging from the reviews, the answer is yes. As of this writing “Sour” has a MetaCritic score of 84 based on 16 reviews thus far: 15 positive, one mixed, and none outright negative. Music journos are saying she’s a “major player in … teen pop and adult pop,” who achieves “euphoria” with her expressions of “anger, jealousy, and bewilderment.” It’s “one of the most gratifyingly undignified breakup albums ever made.

Kim Shattuck, the singer and guitarist who co-founded and led the SoCal punk band the Muffs alongside contributions to Pixies and Nofx, died Wednesday at the age of 56. A rep for Shattuck’s band the Coolies confirmed her death to Rolling Stone. The cause was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als).
“We are very sorry to announce the passing of our bandmate and dear friend Kim Shattuck,” the Muffs’ Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald wrote on Facebook. “Besides being a brilliant songwriter, rocking guitarist and singer/screamer extraordinaire, Kim was a true force of nature.

The Pixies’ new album, “Indie Cindy,” is streaming a week ahead of its release. Listen below. The 12-track set combines the band’s recent EPs — “Ep-1,” “Ep-2,” and “Ep-3” — with three new songs. “Indie Cindy” is the Pixies’ first album since 1991's “Trompe le Monde.” “Doolittle,” “Bossanova” and “Trompe Le Monde” producer Gil Norton returned for the new album, but former bassist and co-founder Kim Deal — who left the band in 2013 — does not appear.

Kim Deal lasted 25 years in the Pixies, but her replacement Kim Shattuck put down her bass after only four months. Based on Shattuck's tweet that announced the news on Friday, it wasn't her decision to leave. Shattuck is the founder of Southern California rock band the Muffs, which she took a break from to play bass and sing backup vocals for the Pixies' first leg of its world tour. The Pixies recently confirmed it will appear at the 2014 Primavera Sound festival, including a Barcelona date with Arcade Fire and Neutral Milk Hotel. The band's North American tour kicks...

At the 2:29 mark, poor Santiago explodes into red sci-fi dust. Watch the video here or below. A song off the veteran rock band's recent "Ep-1," "What Goes Boom" buzzes with heavy, noisy guitars. Legendary Alternative rock band Pixies formed in Boston in 1986, comprising of front man Black Francis, Joey Santiago on guitars, bass player Kim Deal, and drummer David Lovering on drums. The Pitchfork Music Festival was in high gear Saturday, packed with artists comprising the heaviest of the weekend's performances -- and lots of screaming.
Ear plugs were a must for most of Saturday when the likes of The Swans, Savages and The Breeders took the noise to tinnitus-inducing levels. All the bands on the darker side of the rock spectrum shredded and screamed under the (still hot!) sun until Solange cooled things off her exuberant early-evening grooves.
Here's our roundup of Saturday's highlights (story continues after the slideshow):
Phosphorescent was among the few poppier, harmonious acts amid a day packed with screamers. Noodle-y electronic burts gave their mellow songs a jolt of psych-summer jamminess -- all to great effect -- while songs like "Nothing Was Stolen" ranked among the day's finest examples of vocal harmonies. Perhaps knowing Saturday would have such moments in short supply, the band capped off...

Kim Deal leaves the band, and suddenly there's a new song from the Pixies. It's curious timing sure, but you take what you can get. The band released their first new song in nearly a decade Friday (June 28).
"Bagboy" is being offered up for free download and even has a music video. Whether you'll want to download the song or watch the video is a different story. The track is fine, but doesn't seem to carry the same weight as some of the band's other work. It doesn't help that the lyrics aren't sung, but rather spoken and yelled by front man Black Francis. The music behind the vocals is where it's strongest. The band can obviously still jam, and they show it.
It's the first new song since a 2004 iTunes exclusive single, "Bam Thwok," was released. Whether or not this leads to an album, their last was in 1991, remains to be seen.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Pixies' second album, "Surfer Rosa," a seminal LP that has gone down in Rolling Stone history as one of the 500 greatest records of all time.
Every indie rock band of the past two and half decades owes a great deal to the Pixies, the Boston-bred quartet that seamlessly merged psychedelia, noise rock and alternative grunge to create one of the 1980's most memorable music projects. Formed in the collegiate environment of University of Massachusetts, the band -- comprised of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering -- predates Nirvana as a catalyst for the immeasurable rock boom of the 1990s.
Like most indie rock bands, the Pixies were not a chart topping force, but their second album, the lyrically named "Surfer Rosa," earned accolades on its own after its 1988 release. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice dubbed the record "the Amerindie find of the year,...

Although the 1993 incarnation of The Breeders was theoretically meant to reunite after its 1994 hiatus, Kelley Deal’s rehab and a bevy of side projects disrupted the group’s momentum so much that it never actually happened. Luckily, a text message from Kim Deal to bandmates Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson asking if they wanted to get together for the 20th anniversary of Last Splash was all it took to get the ball rolling again. In addition to reissuing a deluxe 20th-anniversary edition of the album in April 2013, Kim Deal, Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson will ...

I was crawling on my hands and knees on a filthy concrete dressing room floor in Tijuana, Mexico. This was not a scene from Papillon; this was me after a gig. It was 1993. My band, Zuzu’s Petals, had just completed the most embarrassing blind-drunk set of our careers, and I was worried that we’d be kicked off our fabulous one-month, high-profile tour -- opening for the dreamy new-wave swashbuckler Adam Ant -- because I was behaving so unprofessionally. Zuzu’s Petals’ stock was finally rising, thanks to our well-received first album. With more people in the crowd, I felt more responsibility to put on a decent show and not be sh*tfaced.
Broken glass embedded itself in my palms and kneecaps as I dragged myself to the toilet, which sat bare and open in the dressing room. After I’d heaved a day’s worth of tequila shots...

Contrary to what Hunter S. Thompson's oeuvre tells you, drugs do not, in fact, make you cool. Unless, of course, you are Hannah Montana, and you are so uncool that you make Taylor Swift look like Kim Deal in comparison. As part of her campaign to make you like her just a little bit, Miley Cyrus celebrated her nineteenth birthday by enjoying a cake bearing the visage of reggae legend Bob Marley. "You know you're a stoner when friends make you a Bob Marley cake," Cyrus quipped to the crowd after friend Kelly Osborne presented her with the cake. "You know you smoke way too much fucking weed." After she was busted for smoking salvia last year, it seems that Cyrus has been on a quest to reinvent herself from a Disney pop princess into something approximating a real person. Although her comment [...]...

Pixies performed a special 'secret' gig for their fan club members in California last night (November 19). The gig was part of the group's current Doolittle tour, where they have played their 1989 second album at 19 of America's secondary cities. Bass player Kim Deal told the crowd at the start of the gig: "We're doing a lot of songs that we haven't done in a while - our setlist is like, two pages, so just get comfortable." They proceeded to play 31 songs from their back catalogue at the Music Box venue in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Their two-hour set started with 'Bone Machine', before they jokingly laughed on stage after messing up the intro. Joey Santiago also played his guitar part on 'Vamos' on his iPhone. Pixies will complete their tour with gigs at Napa Uptown Theatre tonight (November 20) and tomorrow (more)...

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Nevermind, band's close friend — and former MTV staffer — Amy Finnerty recalls their rise to fame.

When Amy Finnerty first met Nirvana, she had just come to MTV to work in the Music and Programming department. Of course, she didn't let them know that fact. She was just blown away to finally meet the guys who had made her favorite album (at least at that point): Bleach.
Over the next four years, Finnerty would not only become close friends with the band, but intrinsically linked to them too. Since she was just a few years younger than the guys (not to mention a huge fan), she was one of the first people within the company to champion them — and was almost singlehandedly responsible for getting their "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the channel.

Some time in the mid-90s I had friends who were all excited about some tapes they had. "You gotta hear these two guys Peter and Raymond." What I heard were two drunken men screaming at each other. One of them was noticeably gay, and injected some fine Paul Lynde-esque zingers, the most risible of which was his cri de coeur "shut up, little man!" My friends were doubled-over in laughter; I didn't get it. I dismissed it, though in time I found myself quoting lines from these tapes and, after that, wanting to know more about the two sad sacks abusing one another. (I must note, this is exactly what happened when I first saw the underground film Grey Gardens, which I've now seen dozens of times and recognize as a masterpiece.)

In a show when so many things went wrong, Kim Zolciak was so right in our book. On Sunday's (Jan. 9) episode of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," she made lemonade from lemons and that's more than we can say for some of her cast mates.
In this cast, delusions of grandeur are the norm. Phaedra Parks, though, has raised the bar this season. In this episode, she throws another one of her outlandish southern parties. She calls it a "sip and see" and it's basically the infant version of a debutante ball. We hardly believe that such a thing really exists and we have to consider the source. This is the woman who claims her baby was ready to be born after seven months, after all.
She invited Kim to try and clear the air after last episode's spa showdown and when conversation went to Phaedra's supposed seven-month pregnancy, the...

Chicago – The great Eagle Rock Entertainment released a pair of concert Blu-rays this week that deserve your attention, especially for serious fans of either of the bands involved. Frank Black, Kim Deal and the rest of The Pixies rock in a pair of shows on “Pixies Live: Acoustic and Electric” and Zakk Wylde (don’t miss our exclusive portrait) proves his guitar-god prowess on “Black Label Society: The European Invasion Doom Troopin’”
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
The best music discs don’t just replicate the concert experience but give you a view of the band doing what they do best. Ideally, it’s not just “any show,” but one that could convert the non-believers as well as preach to the choir. Such is the case with “Acoustic and Electric” and “The European Doom Troopin’,” although the former is more effective at illustrating its artist’s ability than the latter, but we’ll get to that.

By now, you've surely read Cleveland Cavaliers' majority owner Dan Gilbert's "open letter" to fans, which was posted on the team's official site moments after LeBron James ripped the heart out of the hard-luck city by announcing he was signing with the Miami Heat (live, on Espn, to boot). It's an amazing letter for several thousand reasons (the Comic Sans font, the unhinged vitriol, the "personal guarantee" that the Cavs will win a championship before the Heat do, the fact that Gilbert paraphrased the bad guy in the 1990 Steven Seagal flick "Hard To Kill" when he wrote "You can take it to the bank"), but what makes it most remarkable is how downright human of a reaction it was.
Everyone has pulled a Dan Gilbert at some point in his or her life, has raged and wailed and invoked ancient curses on someone who has wronged them in some way.

He has been known as Frank Black and Black Francis, but when he was born on this day 45 years ago, the frontman of the Pixies was called Charles Thompson IV. No matter what you call him, he has plenty to celebrate on his birthday, as Black Francis helped invent alternative rock and was part of an incredible group who didn't need to go to the mainstream because the mainstream came to them.
Francis grew up shuttling back and forth between Boston (where he was born) and Los Angeles. He eventually settled in Boston and started a band with Joey Santiago, a friend he met while in college at the University of Massachusetts. They recruited bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering, and the Pixies were born. The dynamic songwriting, razor-sharp playing and Francis' obtuse, literate lyrics made the group an instant success among indie-minded music fans when their debut Ep...

“Each age, it is found, must write its own books; or rather, each generation for the next succeeding. The books of an older period will not fit this.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson “You think I’m dead but I sail away on a wave of mutilation.” —Pixies, “Wave of Mutilation” Black Francis of the Pixies during the Doolittle tour, Chicago, 2009. Photograph by Charlie Clark. Are the Pixies old, or is the story of their music just beginning? I found myself pondering this question during last night’s sold-out concert at Hammerstein Ballroom, in New York City, which doubled as a 20th-anniversary celebration of the band’s indispensable album Doolittle. The Pixies played the album front-to-back, framing it with a few B-sides—some “so obscure we had to learn them”—and then capping the night with an encore of favorites from other albums. But back to the question. Physically, the band’s...

We may be in a recession, but even when the economy is in the toilet, you still need to have great music. That's why we invented "Bargain Spins," a new feature that focuses on overlooked albums that also happen to be available in every used or bargain bin in every record store in the country (and if you don't have a record store in your town anymore, you can still find them discounted in most every digital music store or on sites like Half.com). So enjoy some great records you might have missed.
