X-Men: First Class
In this prequel to Bryan Singer’s genre-resurrecting X-Men, director Matthew Vaughn leaps back to 1963, where Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) is just beginning to lay the groundwork for his school, with the help of his best friend, Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender). The Us Weekly readers who know freak-folk musician Devendra Banhart as the hippie-haired beardo on the arm of Natalie Portman probably won't recognize him now. The Portman thing ended a while ago, for one. Plus he's wearing glasses these days, prescribed to him when he started getting headaches from poring over his miniscule drawings for a recent art exhibition, he explains in a call from his home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Also, he'll begin a tour next week to support his latest album, What Will We Be, with a scandalously short-cropped do. "It's like a lesbian librarian," he jokes.
Along with the new bookish look, he's coming out as an accomplished visual artist--his second career that technically came first. His first album The Charles C. Leary, came out in 2002; he's been quietly exhibiting paintings since 1998. He's designed the covers of all but one of his eight albums,...

Billabong's 3rd Annual Design for Humanity fashion, music, and art one-night event will be happening tonight in Hollywood at the Avalon/Bardot. The annual event began as a way for Billabong to give back to a non-profit close to its heart, but now offers a chance for retailers, athletes, celebrities, artists and the general public to give back as well.
The evening will begin with an art show and auction in the Bardot club, followed by a bikini fashion show, moving to a performance by the two bands Iglu & Hartley and The Airborne Toxic Event and ending the night with tunes from a DJ.
This year Design for Humanity will benefit charity:water, a nonprofit organization that helps provide clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Tickets cost the day of the show and 100% of ticket sales will be donated to the charity.

Once upon a time - the 1990s, to be exact - there existed on Manhattan's Lower East Side a storefront gallery populated by young street artists.
Or, as one of the artists says in "Beautiful Losers," Aaron Rose's documentary look back at the gallery he ran for 10 years, "It wasn't really a gallery. It was more of a party space . . . for rich bored kids."
Rose catches up with 11 of the gallery's alumni and alumnae - punk rockers, hip-hoppers, graffiti artists, skateboarders - who have gone on to bigger and better things.

- Anarchists of the traditional art form, I'm looking forward to catching this docu: an in-depth look into (just under a baker's dozen or so of) artists that remain, for the most part, incognito from the mass recognition/acclaim. Not surprisingly, I'm only familiar with a trio of names (those associated for their contributions to the film world), but I'm sure this grouping of social misfits, who made the stomping grounds of the urban jungle their own canvases will incite plenty of interest. Jeez, I regret not spending more time developing a certain side of my brain. Beautiful Losers follows a loose-knit group of likeminded and creative outsiders in the 1990s who found common ground at a little NYC storefront art gallery. Rooted in the Diy (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, these individuals created art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Featuring Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen,
