In their ongoing quest to bring most of Charles Band’s Empire Films from the ’80s to Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing another double feature containing two of the studio’s better efforts: 1984’s The Dungeonmaster (aka Ragewar) and Eliminators from 1986.
Though omnipresent in the horror genre since Dead of Night in 1945 (or even Waxworks in 1924 if you’re willing to count it), the anthology film has rarely extended into the realm of sci-fi or fantasy—Heavy Metal aside, of course. One of the rare exceptions is The Dungeonmaster, an anthology that assembles the all-star team of Empire Pictures in the mid-’80s: Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Dave Allen, Ted Nicolaou, Pater Manoogian and several others.
Originally intended as a single story that was expanded by necessity into an anthology, The Dungeonmaster follows computer programmer Paul Bradford (Jeffrey Byron, star of Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn), inventor of a...

Though it’s often remembered as one of the many Gremlins rip-offs of the ‘80s, Ghoulies has its origins in 1983 (or a year before Gremlins hit screens), when producer Charles Band and creature effects guru Stan Winston dreamed up a film called Beasties about a bunch of small creatures wreaking havoc on a group of young people. It underwent some changes on the way to the screen: rather than Band directing as originally planned, the film would be helmed by actor Luca Bercovici, who had previously worked for Band on 1982’s Parasite. Stan Winston would not design the creatures, either; those duties fell to John Carl Buechler. And despite what its title might suggest, there wouldn’t end up being very many ghoulies in Ghoulies.

In the fall a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of Horror. The air is crisp. Days become shorter. And nights get longer. And it all culminates in one night, Halloween. But there seems to be a real lack of Horror films that take place on the infamous night.
Halloween is Tommy’s favorite holiday. His Grandpa’s favorite too. Tommy loves dressing up and trick or treating. And Gramps loves seances and sacrificing people to Satan. One year Grandpa gives Tommy a pumpkin, a small skeleton and a necklace. His mom, upon learning the pumpkin is from her father, smashes it. Tommy hides the other gifts. Distraught over the gaining influence Tommy’s dad interrupts a ritual and ends up killed by Gramps’ coven! Twenty years later Grandpa is ready for Tommy to take over the cult. But not if Tommy’s mother and siblings have anything to say about it.

With the ability to seemingly pop up anywhere, they made some viewers in the ’80’s a little wary of stepping foot in their bathrooms, and now the little demonic creatures are getting a high-definition upgrade. Scream Factory has announced they are bringing Ghoulies and Ghoulies II to Blu-ray for the first time next spring, so fans should dig out their W.A.S.P. cassettes and gear up for practical effects aplenty.
Scream Factory revealed they will release Ghoulies and Ghoulies II as a Blu-ray double feature, similar to their upcoming Blacula / Scream, Blacula, Scream release. An official debut date and bonus features have yet to be revealed, but we’ll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further announcements.
For those unfamiliar with the films, the first Ghoulies follows a group of young adults dealing with small, rambunctious demons after they invoke them in a black magic ceremony at a mansion. In the sequel,...
