In 1991, Nirvana closed out their seminal album Nevermind with a song titled “Something in the Way,” in which Kurt Cobain imagined what life would be like if he lived underneath the Young Street Bridge in his hometown, Aberdeen, Washington. Now, that historic bridge is facing destruction.
Connecting North Aberdeen with the city’s downtown area, the bridge was built in 1956 and inspired Cobain’s classic lyrics, starting with the lines “Underneath the bridge/ tarp has sprung a leak…” In the 30 years since his death, the bridge has become a memorial of sorts for Cobain, and currently sports layers of well-wishes and Nirvana-related graffiti on its walls.
But, as explained by a website created by the city of Aberdeen for the project (via Guerrilla Candy), the bridge is suffering from the effects of “aging and deteriorating bridge conditions.” Now, with a $23 million federal funding grant, the city is hoping to revitalize...

Nick Oliveri has announced two career-spanning compilations, N.O. Hits at All Vols. 8 and 9, continuing his running series of the same name. Both arrive January 19th via Heavy Psych Sounds.
As a teaser, Oliveri offered up the Vol. 8 opener “Chains and Shackles” — the first official release of a 2010 collaborative track with Slash.
The song originates as an outtake from Slash’s 2010 self-titled album and is finally receiving a proper release on Oliveri’s comp. His unhinged snarls and Slash’s frenetic riffing call back to the stoner-punk that the former contributed to the early Queens of the Stone Age albums. The track was even produced by Eric Valentine, so that sound is definitely there.
“Slash wrote the music and Eric Valentine and myself wrote the words,” said Oliveri in a press release. “I feel the song is hard-driving and it has the right amount of uncensored dirt, filth, sex,...

Mondo Generator have announced a new album, We Stand Against You, arriving October 27th via Heavy Psych Sounds. The Nick Oliveri-fronted band also shared the lead single “Death March.”
Since his days in Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, Mondo Generator has been one of the core creative outlets for Oliveri. As heard on “Death March,” the band continues to dish out groove-laden stoner rock with a punk-rock edge. And Oliveri’s vocals are as unhinged and acidic as ever.
“’Death March’ is for everyone who refuses to back down, lay down, bend over to authority,” remarked Oliveri in a press announcement.
Regarding the album — self-described as the band’s “heaviest” to date — he added: “Nine songs of fire, fury and angst! Some of the songs are reflecting my personal thoughts and some songs are about family and close friends dying or committing suicide and some are about...

The late Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan was close friends with Kurt Cobain during the latter’s lifetime. Cobain performed on Lanegan’s debut solo album, and anecdotes from Lanegan’s memoir illustrated just how tight the two grunge artists were.
It turns out their collaborative efforts apparently went both ways. In the new biographical oral history, Lanegan, the singer’s former Queens of the Stone Age bandmate Nick Oliveri revealed that Mark helped write lyrics for Nirvana’s stark masterpiece “Something in the Way,” but went uncredited. Therefore Lanegan — who often struggled to make ends meet while coping with drug addiction — didn’t receive what would have been massive royalties for the sales of Nirvana’s mega-selling album Nevermind.
“Mark said he wrote some lyrics on ‘Something in the Way’ with Kurt on Nevermind,” Oliveri told author Greg Prato. “But Kurt had played on some of Mark’s solo stuff,...

Heavy Consequence contributor Greg Prato is also the author of several rock books. His latest, titled Lanegan, pays tribute to late singer Mark Lanegan. Below he introduces exclusive excerpts from Lanegan, as told by the vocalist’s musical peers.
As learned throughout his autobiography, Sing Backwards and Weep: A Memoir, few lived their life as hard as Mark Lanegan did. After apparently overcoming a near-fatal episode with Covid in 2021 — I interviewed over 20 musicians, friends, and admirers of his music for my latest book, simply titled Lanegan. Below are excerpts from the book, which touch upon various eras of his remarkable career.
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden): We played shows with the Trees, and Mark Pickerel used to joke about how the Trees were compared to the Doors – because on the early Trees records, people would describe Lanegan as having a voice that was reminiscent of Jim Morrison. And in our early days,...

Zane Lowe has revealed that Chase & Status told the most "shocking" story on his upcoming MTV show.
Soundchain will see Lowe speak to a different artist each week, discussing their careers and backgrounds, alongside special performances.
The BBC Radio 1 DJ hinted that electronic duo Chase & Status had a difficult but fruitful professional relationship with Plan B, aka Ben Drew.
He said: "I had spoken to Ben about Chase & Status [and he had implied that] 'we have a working relationship that's successful' but he gave off this vibe that it's not without its challenges.
"So I raised it with [Chase & Status] and said, 'I've got the feeling that you guys have this interesting relationship' and they told the most amazing story.
"The extremity of that story is just crazy. It was made out of pure love and admiration but it's a good example of a high intensity disagreeing moment."

More than ever, Queens Of The Stone Age sound like a glam rock band on their sixth full-length “… Like Clockwork.” That is to say, Josh Homme not only embraces an arching, aching, menacing sound, but also makes a whole theater out of those sonic dynamics, from bedraggled slow dances to ballroom thumpers and purpose-driven lyricism over rock music’s MVPs. Players like Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor and Qotsa’s prodigal bassist Nick Oliveri fill in the gaps of Homme’s black fever dreams. “… Like Clockwork” has all the big names of modern rock but without embracing all its latest and worst idiosyncrasies....

Queens of the Stone Age, ". Like Clockwork" (Matador)
Opening to the sound of breaking glass and riddled with lascivious intent throughout, Queens of the Stone Age's new album ". Like Clockwork" is the soundtrack to the B movie of your dreams.
In the six years since the release of the band's critically acclaimed "Era Vulgaris," Queens founder Josh Homme has moonlighted with the Eagles of Death Metal and super group Them Crooked Vultures. Now, the California native sounds energized back in his day job.
The credit list for ". Like Clockwork" reads like a who's who of modern rock, with appearances from the band's frequent collaborators Dave Grohl and Mark Lanegan, as well as Homme's former bandmate Nick Oliveri, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, Artic Monkeys' frontman Alex Turner and, perhaps surprisingly, Sir Elton John – who lends backing vocals and piano to "Fairweather Friends."

There’s an easy cool to Josh Homme and the music he writes with his band Queens of the Stone Age. Like Marlon Brando in The Wild One when asked “what are you rebelling against” - “Whadda you got?” – the music of Qotsa just drips with sweat, gasoline, attitude, and … well… coolness. Their new album …Like Clockwork will be released on June 4, but don’t let the title fool you. Apparently the new album didn’t go as planned and wasn’t such an easy journey. Then again, I don’t think Brando knew what he was getting himself into when he stopped into that small town bar in The Wild One. For what it’s worth, the new album is now completed and features a number of guest stars including Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, Dave Grohl, Elton John, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters.

Mark Lanegan has been recording with Queens of the Stone Age as they work on their new album. The band confirmed on their Facebook and Twitter pages over the weekend that Lanegan - who has appeared on three previous Queens of the Stone Age albums - has been recording vocals. "Lanegan came by. His appearance means that the core Songs for the Deaf-era lineup of Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri, Lanegan and Dave Grohl have all recorded contributions for (more)...

Since hearing some exciting news about the forthcoming Queens of the Stone Age album—namely the inclusion of Dave Grohl on drums and former bassist Nick Oliveri’s possible appearance —it’s great to see the band’s still on track. In a recent video posted by the band on YouTube, we get a maybe-too-inclusive look at the band’s studio, which shows Matt Berry and Steve Agee catching the band in its element. In the clip, titled Secrets of the Sound, we see a cluttered studio space, band members’ putting their vanity on display and some lively discussions of Patrick Swayze. ...

After employing Dave Grohl to play drums, Queens Of The Stone Age are unexpectedly looking to former bassist Nick Oliveri to contribute vocals to a song on the new record. Rock star Slash has, on Tuesday, September 22, announced on his Twitter account that he is recording a track with fellow musicians Dave Grohl and Duff McKagan. "Doing a track for my record with Dave Grohl on drums & Duff on bass tonight, it promises to be killer," he tweeted about the studio session.
Minutes later he tweeted again, "Great jamming w/Duff & Grohl tonight, the track is a killer intrumental, very heavy." Despite his tweets, the former guitarist of Guns N' Roses didn't spill the bean on what the track will be called.
And while little is known about the particular track, it has been reported that Slash has been listing the help of Iggy Pop, Nick Oliveri, Ronnie Wood, Flea, Jason Bonham, Stacy Ferguson, and Maroon 5's singer Adam Levine to support his upcoming debut album "Slash & Friends". The effort is expected to be released sometime next year.
