Exclusive: Blackwater Pictures, the British indie production company behind the buzzy biopic about the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, has set up what they describe as a “multi-million-pound” fund to support commercially-minded independent British films.
Helmed by Kevin Harvey and Antoine Dixon-Bellot, Blackwater Pictures will commit to supporting five projects as part of a slate focused on emerging directors. The fund will prioritize “commercial independent British films,” organizers said today.
The fund is being managed in collaboration with BAFTA-nominated producer Tiernan Hanby (The Karman Line, Summit Fever, Heavyweight) of Pin Sharp Pictures and Simon Marriott of development & production company Shout Loud Creative. Money for the fund was raised through private equity and personal funds.
The slate currently includes Antecedent, the directorial feature debut of Dan Bronzite. He is best known for his supernatural horror Long Time Dead produced for Working Title Films/Universal...

Exclusive: Actor Steven Waddington (The Imitation Game) has penned a screenplay that he will direct based on the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, with Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) signed on to star.
Barnard — best known for his breakout in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk but also has credits such as The Goldfinch and the BBC’s popular 2016 War & Peace adaptation — will play White in the pic. Producers told us the film will condense the life and career of the colorful six-time Snooker World Championship finalist into “one crazy night” during which he “is forced to confront his darker side.”
Produced by Black Water Pictures and Lipsync Productions, the feature shoots in London this April. Winstone and his long-term manager, Michael Wiggs, are also on board as co-producers. The film will mark Waddington’s feature directorial debut.

Breeders is a dark comedy. But towards the end of the second season of the Martin Freeman- and Daisy Haggard-fronted parenting series, it gets even darker.
Season 2 of the FX and Sky series starts with their children, Luke (now played by Alex Eastwood) and Ava (Eve Prenelle), six years older than they were in Season 1, thus serving up brand-new parenting challenges for Freeman’s Paul and Haggard’s Ally.
Luke’s increasing anxiety and Ava’s growing independence added some new and uncharted complications into the existing chaotic mix of stretched resources, lack of time and the fine art of winging it while looking like you know what you’re doing.

Martin Freeman-fronted comedy “Breeders” is heading back into production on Monday.
Cameras have resumed rolling in Greater London on the second season of the Sky and FX Networks series, following a 16-week suspension due to the Covid-19 crisis. Produced by Avalon (“Catastrophe”), the show is understood to be adhering to strict coronavirus protocols, which were signed off earlier this summer.
The show is the latest to get back into production in the U.K., where the industry is gradually coming back to life after a months-long shutdown. Protocols were published in late May, and an insurance fund with government support was unveiled last month. Netflix and BBC drama “The Serpent” recently wrapped its shoot, after relocating to the U.K. from Thailand.

FX has renewed the comedy “Breeders,” in which the two British actors star, for a second season. The announcement was made by the cabler’s president of original programming Nick Grad. Season 1 of “Breeders,” which is produced by Avalon and FX Productions for FX and Sky Originals, premiered in March to critical acclaim, with many lauding it for its brutally honest portrayal of parenting.
“Breeders” centers around Paul (Freeman), a caring father discovering he’s not quite the man he thought he was, and his partner Ally (Haggard), who runs a recording studio, makes Paul laugh and has the ability to read a story to their children while she’s technically asleep.
“We are proud of everything the creative team and talent on ‘Breeders’ achieved in the first season and look forward...

Because Ray Winstone is a tough East End geezer you wouldn’t expect him to team up with his actress daughter, Jaime Winstone, in some Paper Moon-like film. Instead the real-life father and daughter are making a horror film together. Nice.
We’ve been sent over the full press release for the film entitled Elfie Hopkins. Winstone senior plays the maddest on-screen butcher since Hilary Briss! Looks like this could be a goodun.
“Jaime Winstone is to star alongside her father, Ray Winstone, in Elfie Hopkins – a twisted tale of cannibalism set in a British rural hunting village, which begins principle photography on March 8 in locations around Cardiff. This is the first time both actors have worked together.
Jaime plays the title role, a quirky “wanna-be” detective whose appetite for a real-life case is matched by the appetites of a new family (The Gammons) who move into the village.

Samantha Womack's agent has dismissed suggestions that the actress's decision to leave EastEnders was influenced by her current baby swap storyline. Earlier today, a newspaper reported that the star had resigned in protest last November upon receiving the initial script for the plot, which has seen her character Ronnie Branning switch her dead son with Kat Moon's (Jessie Wallace) newborn baby. However, Womack's representative Michael Wiggs has insisted that that the current speculation surrounding her decision is untrue. In a statement, Wiggs explained: "There's no truth whatsoever in any suggestion that Sam is 'quitting' EastEnders over the current storyline. Sam's contract comes to a natural end later this year and she will be taking a break from the show - this has been agreed with the producers for several months. (more)...
