A version of this story about “Daisy Jones & the Six” music supervisor Frankie Pine first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The music came first. Before actors were hired and before directors and designers and crew members came on board, “Daisy Jones & the Six,” the limited series from Amazon’s Prime Video, hired music supervisor Frankie Pine, who brought in a list of music producers that included songwriter-producer Blake Mills. Pine got the job, Mills got the job and the production got to work creating the rock milieu of late 1960s through late 1970s Los Angeles.
“We wanted to make sure that ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’ fit within that time period,” Pine said. “We wanted our music to stand out on its own, but we also wanted it to stay within the palette of that time. I wanted...

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani celebrate their love for one another in the new video for their duet, “Nobody But You.” The song, written by Ross Copperman, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne and Tommy Lee James, appears on Shelton’s compilation album Fully Loaded: God’s Country, which was released late in 2019.
The video begins with separate shots of the two singers, singing in the middle of a darkened forest. But by the second verse, they’re together and the scenery around them is much warmer and brighter — they lounge on a couch with their dogs,...

Blake Shelton will spend the early part of 2020 the same way he spent 2019: on tour with a few of his buddies as well as the artists who influenced him. For the second straight year, the Voice coach will headline the ‘Friends and Heroes’ tour beginning Thursday, February 13th.

Blake Shelton heads back to Oklahoma in the cinematic new video for “God’s Country.” The singer and Voice coach released the track March 29th and performed it live on the 54th Acm Awards on April 7th.
Directed by Sophie Muller (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Gwen Stefani), the clip was filmed in and around Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where Shelton makes his primary residence. It’s interspersed with vintage footage of Dust Bowl-era farmers and vicious twisters, highlighting the stark contrast between the natural beauty of the land and its sometimes-unforgiving nature. Lauren Alaina made her first appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Tuesday night, performing her current single “Ladies in the ’90s.” The song, penned by Alaina with Jesse Frasure and Amy Wadge, is the singer’s first new music to follow her 2017 album Road Less Traveled.
In a square-shouldered dress and flanked by her bandmates, Alaina sings of growing up “on radio waves, when the ladies dominated.” In the chorus, she references Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine,” Britney Spears’ “Baby,” Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,...

Earlier this week, Blake Shelton shared details of his headlining 2019 Friends and Heroes Tour, during which he’ll hit the road with Cma New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina and some very special guests: the Bellamy Brothers, John Anderson and his “Hillbilly Bone” singing partner Trace Adkins. In conjunction with Shelton’s nods to country music’s past, he’s just released a deliciously tipsy version of “Tequila Sheila,” a Top 40 country hit from 1980 originally recorded by Bobby Bare for his live — and wildly funny — Down & Dirty LP.

The Peabody award-winning The Leftovers concludes on Sunday, June 4 and through its three seasons, the show has become just as acclaimed for its music as its incredible story, writing and acting.
While the HBO series is no stranger to change (season one's opening titles used an original piece by composer Max Richter, and season two used Iris DeMent's "Let the Mystery Be"), season three has gone even further, adapting the theme song to each episode. "[It was showrunner] Damon Lindelof's decision," music supervisor Liza Richardson tells Et by phone, adding that the music choices on the series vary between her and Lindelof's allegiance to certain artists, love of repetition and the desire to "surprise."
Exclusive: Damon Lindelof on Ending ‘Leftovers’ in the Wake of ‘Lost’
"Hopefully all the main title choices are all very surprising for the audience, whether you know the song or not," she says. And while title choices serve as an ode to that specific...

There may be no miracles in Miracle, according to certain characters on HBO's "The Leftovers," but there's now been a miracle about "The Leftovers," which HBO just renewed for a third season despite a precipitous ratings drop between seasons 1 and 2. There's a catch, albeit one that "Leftovers" co-creator Damon Lindelof specifically asked for: the third season will be the final one. Lindelof has been candid about how tough the show is to make, saying that he "was really depressed" making the first season. The reason renewal took so long last time was because Lindelof wasn't sure he wanted to do more episodes after that experience. But Lindelof, Tom Perrotta, and everyone else involved took "The Leftovers" to the next level this season (here are my reviews of all the episodes), and before the season finale aired earlier this week, he told me that he not only wanted to continue, but that,...

A review of tonight's season finale of "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I spin the karaoke wheel... "Family is everything." -Meg "I don't understand what's happening." -John "Me neither." -Kevin "God, I hope this is not the last episode of this show." -My notes as the opening credits played I had another long conversation with Damon Lindelof about the finale, and as a bookend to the one we had before the season. Lindelof was understandably not interested in explaining many aspects of the finale, or the season, preferring to, like Iris DeMent, just let the mystery be. I suggested that certain developments in these final episodes — say, Kevin's ability to survive a near point-blank gunshot wound and not bleed out during that time he was lying on the floor of the animal quarantine; or, before that, his ability to survive not only drinking Virgil's poison (or whatever...

The Leftovers, Season 2, Episode 5: “No Room at the Inn”
Written by Damon Lindelof and Jacqueline Hoyt
Directed by Nicole Kassell
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on HBO
Perhaps I jumped the gun on spending a recap talking about how The Leftovers is enamored with the concept of tests, and with emulating the quizzical nature of religious texts, because “No Room at the Inn” takes that idea several steps further. It’s the second time (after first-season breakthrough “Two Boats and a Helicopter”) that the series has honed in on Christopher Eccleston’s perennially put-upon Episcopalian preacher Matt Jamison for an entire hour, and it’s also the first time that it feels a bit like the series repeating itself. “No Room” is structurally and tonally similar to its predecessor, and despite some strong moments and some truly gut-churning moments of emotional torment, it just can’t match “Two Boats” for impact.

Lukasz Gottwald, the guy who wrote Britney Spears‘ new hit, “Hold It Against Me,” has recently had to deal with public claims by the Bellamy Brothers that the song is nothing but a rip-off of the 1979 Bellamy Brothers song, “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me?”
In response, Gottwald has decided to sue for defamation, stating that the Bellamy Brothers’ claims are ridiculous and unfounded. Gottwald is also asking for a court order clarifying that the two songs have no relation to each other whatsoever. If you’ve heard both these songs, it’s pretty obvious that the Bellamy Brothers are just grasping at straws here. If they really thought the song was a rip-off of theirs, they would have taken the case to court themselves.

There were a pair of massive new singles, a huge video premiere, a handful of fantastically strange video experiments and a snow storm, but we once again managed to arrive at the end of the week. There is a three-day weekend ahead of us (Monday, January 17 is Martin Luther King Day, so celebrate accordingly), so that will give you extra time to reflect on the past, watch playoff football, finally get around to taking down that Christmas tree or reveling in the awards season (you can catch the Critic's Choice Awards Friday night on VH1 and the Golden Globes on Sunday night on NBC, and we'll be covering them both at MTV News and MTV Movies Blog). But before you do any of that, you should really catch up with everything you might have missed on the MTV Newsroom Blog this week, because our cup was overflowing with excellence.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Not to mention the quickest route to possible legal action. Surprisingly enough, someone has actually stepped forward to challenge Britney Spears over authorship rights to the most eye roll-inducing pickup line in history, claiming that her new smash single, "Hold It Against Me," actually stole its name and lyrics from "If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me," a No. 1 country song that's more than three decades old. Here's the deal… David Bellamy of the Bellamy Brothers, the group responsible for the 1979 hit, was first to sound the alarm, telling Entertainment Weekly that he is looking into the possibility...

They say there's nothing new under the sun, and there are few arenas in the world more suitable as evidence than the pop music world. It's hard to hear anything on the radio that doesn't have a sample of another track, a reference to another artist or a borrowed piece of melody. So it's not entirely shocking that somebody has already come forward to accuse Britney Spears of stealing "Hold It Against Me." Except in this case, the artists in question are more bothered by the title than anything else. David Bellamy, author of the Bellamy Brothers' 1979 chart-topping country hit "If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold it Against Me," is debating whether or not to take legal action against Spears for the use of the line.
"I just have to see what the intent was," he told Entertainment Weekly in an interview conducted on...

Chances are, nobody out there is going to confuse the Bellamy Brothers' slow-rolling, 1979 Tex-Mex country hit "If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me" with Britney Spears' new club grinder "Hold It Against Me."
Yeah, the titles are somewhat similar, but even with the noise the "Let Your Love Flow" sibling act is making over a possible legal challenge to Brit, the chances of winning a case over the borrowing of a song title is pretty slim, according to a noted copyright attorney who spoke to MTV News.
"A title is not copyrightable," said lawyer Brian Caplan, who has more than 20 years of experience in intellectual property and entertainment law. (Caplan does not represent the Bellamy Brothers.

Britney Spears's newly-released single "Hold It Against Me" is rumored to be a rip-off. Some of the lyrics in the chorus are similar to those of The Bellamy Brothers' 1979 classic song. While the duo sings "If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?", Britney delivers refrain "So if I said I want your body now, would you hold it against me?"
"This particular title is kinda hard to disguise, because the title is the song. It's not like saying, 'I love you, baby.' I think songwriters have become watered down. This makes me sound like an old man again, but I find that songwriters now are not as strong as they used to be in the '60 or '70s," David Bellamy told Entertainment Weekly.
"I naturally gravitate to that. I like singer-songwriters, strong hooks, old rock, and old country. I'm...
