Steven Spielberg has made no secret of his support for Joe Biden’s reelection, and now the Oscar winner is rolling up his sleeves for the team.
Spielberg is involved strategically in the incumbent’s campaign and even the specifics of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August, Deadline has confirmed.
“Steven wants to be as helpful as possible to the president,” a well-placed source says. “He believes this is one of the most important elections in the nation’s history.”
The filmmaker is unlikely to helm a short movie at the DNC about Biden this year the way he helped do for John Kerry in 2004, and again at the 2008 convention when Barack Obama was nominated. However, Spielberg has been working with key advisors on how to “convey the president’s successes and his vision for the country” to viewers and delegates, I’m told.

Joe Biden visited Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show today, the latest interview that the president has given to a non-traditional media outlet.
Biden sat down with Stern at his midtown Manhattan studio for a live interview.
The hourlong interview did yield some news. When Stern said that he wanted Biden to debate Donald Trump, Biden said, “I am, somewhere, I don’t know when but I am happy to debate him.”
Trump co-campaign manager Chris Lacivita quickly shot back, “Ok, let’s set it up!”

Trump has challenged Biden to debate, an event that has traditionally been held in the fall general election campaign.
Stern and Biden also got deeply personal, as the president talked of his experience coping with grief after the death of his wife and daughter in an auto accident in 1972.

Steven Spielberg’s next project will not be a movie, with the Oscar-winning director joining the Biden campaign to provide strategy for August’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Reps for Spielberg had no comment on the news, first reported by Puck.
The filmmaker has long supported President Biden, and Spielberg’s friend and former DreamWorks business partner Jeffrey Katzenberg is now a chair of the Biden campaign. In the past several months, Spielberg has attended multiple strategy sessions, offering his insights on how best to tell the president’s story and highlight Biden’s second-term vision at this summer’s convention as he gears up for a November rematch with former President Donald Trump.
Puck also reported that Spielberg helped with the 2020 convention, held virtually at the height of Covid-19. The director does not currently have plans to create a film portion for this summer’s events,...

In 2017, a number of sources confirmed that Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, had secured an internship with Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood producer being accused of s*xual harassment.
The 72-year-old was given a 23-year prison sentence after being found guilty in 2020 of first-degree criminal s*xual act and third-degree r*pe. However, in the case that served as a catalyst for the MeToo movement, New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned the Oscar-winning producer’s 2020 s*x crime conviction.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to play ping-pong with Prince you’ve come to the right place. On this week’s episode of 20 Questions on Deadline, Jimmy Fallon tells a frankly bizarre story about the “Purple Rain” legend and his penchant for table tennis.
We also gain insight into Keith Urban’s sense of humor as Fallon reveals a prank he and Urban once played on Nicole Kidman at an event, plus, the shame-inducing ‘date’ Fallon went on with her years ago.
All these anecdotes seem especially apropos, given that Fallon is celebrating ten years as host of The Tonight Show. In celebration, NBC will air a two-hour special on May 14th, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: 10th Anniversary Special.

Update: Supreme Court justices expressed skepticism of Donald Trump’s argument that presidents enjoy broad immunity, but they wrestled with which certain official acts could be shielded from prosecution and which would not.
There were some suggestions of sending the case base to lower courts to decide, on an individual basis, which of the charges against Trump could be deemed as private acts and subject to criminal liability. That is a prospect that could lead to further delay in Trump’s election conspiracy case, perhaps until after the 2024 election.
A number of the justices expressed concerns that their decision in the case would impact future presidents after they leave office and the extent to which they could be subject to criminal prosecution. Justice Samuel Alito hypothesized about political rivals being prosecuted and “a cycle that destabilizes the functioning of our country.”

Since 2009, Taylor Swift and Kanye West have been locked in one of the tensest battles in celebrity history. They mostly stayed out of each other’s ways after their first, infamous, televised moment together until a public reconciliation in 2015 made it seem like all of that was just water under the bridge. But who knew the worst was yet to come?
Things between Swift and West would not only worsen immensely in 2016, after West released his song “Famous,” but their web would soon entangle Kim Kardashian, Scooter Braun, and even Justin Bieber.

You can’t please all the people all of the time — even if you’re as popular as Taylor Swift. Having attained a somehow higher level of mega-celebrity with her record-breaking Eras Tour and a closely followed romance with Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs (who are headed back to the Super Bowl as the defending NFL champs), the singer now faces the perplexing wrath of Maga conspiracy theorists who have decided the league and the relationship are rigged to help Joe Biden’s chances in the 2024 presidential election.

In 2018, Michelle and Barack Obama's production company Higher Ground signed a multi-year deal with Netflix, the biggest streaming service in the world. The Obamas were set to produce a number of high-profile projects, both scripted and unscripted.
Their first scripted project will premiere on May 9th, and it's not what you might have expected from the former President and First Lady. Bodkin is a dark comedy/mystery/thriller set in a small Irish town, starring comedy legend Will Forte.
What's It About?
True crime podcasters Gilbert (Forte), Dove (Siobhán Cullen), and Emmy (Robyn Cara) are desperately hoping to find a story juicy enough to make their podcast stand out in a crowded market. They decide to head to Ireland, where three strangers once disappeared from the (fictional) small coastal town of Bodkin.
The podcasters come to Bodkin on the festival of Samhain (which one character flippantly describes as 'the Irish Day of the Dead'.

Exclusive: ABC Signature has acquired The Redemption of Al Sharpton, the recent Esquire profile of the civil rights activist by Pulitzer Prize winner Mitchell S. Jackson, to develop as a limited series. No talent is attached at this point but the intention is for Anthony Anderson to star as Sharpton and executive produce through his Just a Kid from Compton Productions. The company’s Evi Regev also is executive producing the project, now in very early stages, along with Artists First’s E. Brian Dobbins (black-ish). Jackson is getting a producing credit.
For The Redemption of Al Sharpton, published in February, Jackson followed the politician & TV/radio personality around the country “to find out why he keeps going, what he’s still doing, and where his place in history will be.”
The profile looks to reconcile Sharpton’s image as “a beacon of the civil-rights movement” and as “a loudmouth in a tracksuit,...

During jury selection for Donald Trump’s New York hush money trial, Judge Juan Merchan accused the former president of “intimidating” a juror after he made a gesture and muttered at him.
Merchan asked Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, to “speak to him” about his behavior.
“Your client was audibly uttering something. He was gesturing and muttering in the direction [of the juror],” the judge said to Blanche.
“I will not tolerate that,” Judge Merchan added, raising his voice. “I will not have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom. Take a minute and speak to your client about it!”
On day two of jury selection, the former president and his lawyers had a potential juror dismissed over a Facebook post he wrote about Trump in 2017.
“Get him out and lock him up,” the man wrote.

Series creator and showrunner Jez Scharf says that with Netflix’s Bodkin, he wanted to “make a dark comedy about what the reality of making a true crime podcast might be like.” Will Forte stars as the true crime podcaster who travels to a small Irish town and stirs up a hornet’s nest with his investigation.
“It’s fascinating and set in these beautiful locations that only Ireland can provide,” says Forte in the three-minute behind-the-scenes featurette. The new video also features Siobhán Cullen (“Dove”), Robyn Cara (“Emmy”), Chris Walley (“Sean O’Shea”), and David Wilmot (“Seamus”) interview clips.
“Bodkin is a dark comedic thriller about a motley crew of podcasters who set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a quaint, coastal Irish town. But once they start pulling at threads, they discover a story much bigger and weirder than they could have ever imagined,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.

Taylor Zakhar Perez said he was thinking about Pride and Prejudice, 10 Things I Hate About You and more classic romances when filming his big romantic scene in Prime Video’s hit Red, White & Royal Blue. Perez plays Alex, the son of the President (Uma Thurman) who falls in love with British Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). Alex confesses his love to Henry after walking in the rain to get to Henry’s castle.
“It did feel very Mr. Darcy,” Zakhar Perez said on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television. “It felt a little Ryan Gosling in The Notebook, 10 Things I Hate About You in that realm of films. Those are things you watch growing up and you’re like I want to make that feeling for this film.”
As for Alex’s political speeches, Zakhar Perez said he studied former President Barack Obama’s delivery as a reference.

"DC's Legends of Tomorrow" is one of the best superhero shows ever made. Even nearly a decade after its premiere on CW, there's still nothing quite like it on TV and certainly nothing that's as willing to break every rule if it means having a cool idea the way this superhero show was. After all, we once made a list running down the 10 most outlandish things to happen on "Legends of Tomorrow" without even mentioning the time the show's heroes met the actual voice actor behind the monster that was chasing them.
That said, arguably the best and wildest moment of the entire show -- one that signified "Legends of Tomorrow" could get away with certain things that no other series could -- came at the end of season 3. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the biggest names in Hollywood and an actor and entertainer who has a big fanbase and a lot of influence. Starting out as a WWE star, he soon transitioned to television and movies, becoming one of the most popular action stars in the world. Known, more or less, as a laid-back guy with an open mind, Johnson has recently caused some controversy with his comments about politics, as well as woke and cancel culture.
Before we continue, a quick recap is in order. Back in 2008 and 2012, Johnson publically supported and voted for Barack Obama, but after not voting in 2016, he has been considered an independent voter since 2017. In 2020, though, he endorsed Joe Biden but has stated that he would not be doing it this year, and this actually led to a series of interesting remarks about today’s culture.

Ice Spice has joined the cast of Spike Lee’s upcoming film High and Low, as Variety reports. The project will serve as the rapper’s acting debut.
Announced in February, Lee’s High and Low is an English-language remake of Akria Kurosawa’s 1963 original, which itself was a loose adaptation of Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, and is set to star Denzel Washington and feature Jeffery Wright. The project marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, with 2006’s Inside Man being their most recent meeting. A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures are developing and producing the project, while Lee and Alan Fox penned the script.
Though there is not yet a release date for the project, it has officially begun production. Once complete, A24 is set to distribute the film theatrically, followed by a global launch on AppleTV+, as Apple Original Films has partnered as a co-financier.

Conan O’Brien returned to The Tonight Show last night, reflecting with host Jimmy Fallon about his time on NBC’s late-night shows. The comedian hosted Late Night for 16 seasons from 1993 to 2009, before briefly helming The Tonight Show from 2009 to 2010, when he was fired.
“It’s weird to come back,” O’Brien said. “I haven’t been in this building for such a long time, and I haven’t been on this floor in forever. I was here for 16 years doing the Late Night show before we went out to LA.

“I’m so nervous,” says Olivia, a photographer with Jewish Voice for Peace. “I’m so nervous.” She keeps repeating it. Olivia and about a dozen other activists are huddled in a cluster of booths in the Astro diner in midtown Manhattan. “Parks and Recreation” debuted April 9, 2009, just three months after Barack Obama’s inauguration. A perfect alignment, one might think, considering how much the NBC sitcom embodied the 44’s “Yes we can” spirit. However, the tone of its much-neglected, much-derided first season was more akin to the Bush era: cynical, polarizing, and slightly clueless.
Subsequently, its opening six episodes have largely been consigned to history: the general advice to newcomers is skip them entirely and start with the sunnier second season. But while the show undoubtedly benefited from its course correction, its initial glimpse into the fictional Pawnee’s madcap P&r department isn’t the disaster often purported.
Much of the criticism inevitably focused on its similarities to “The Office.” The show was conceived as a spin-off from the corporate satire after all, and shares a creator (Greg Daniels), cast member (Rashida Jones), and mockumentary format. Its premiere was even...

I’m not overly fond of politics. Given a choice, I’d rather talk food, or faraway places.
But I do have a weakness for political films — or, more precisely, films about political campaigns.
The best of them have been sharp, often witty, and self-aware to the point of cynicism. Bulworth. The Campaign. Wag the Dog. Primary Colors. Dave.
As a genre, they tend toward satire, if not broad comedy. In one of my favorites, David Gordon Green’s Our Brand Is Crisis, two inimical American political consultants corrupt Bolivian politics by transplanting our worst habits to foreign shores. It’s painfully funny stuff.
Where serious, the campaign genre tends to be confessional. With The Ides of March, progressive filmmaker George Clooney, adapting a play be Beau Willimon, unmasked Faustian bargains behind the gleaming ideals of a “good” politician in a hard-fought Ohio primary.

Comedian Roseanne Barr was attacked on social media for ranting about Democratic donors at a GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake’s Arizona campaign fundraiser.
Barr’s rant took place at Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald Trump’s property in Florida, where she served as a “special guest comedian” for the event.
Barr released a statement ahead of the event.
“On my way to Mar-a-Lago to help support the great @KariLake,” she wrote on X. “We must try to vote our way out of this for at least one last year…. and then if that doesn’t work #1776.”
The reference to 1776 caused some critics to claim that she was inciting violence.
A video of her at the event made it to X, showing her telling American college students that they should drop out.
“How’re you doing?” the comedian said while slurring her words and holding a glass of white wine in her hands.

Former President Bill Clinton plans to debut a memoir about his experiences after his presidency, with with publication date set for November 19.
In a statement, the former president said that the memoir, Citizen: My Life After the White House, “is the story of my twenty-three-plus years since leaving the White House, told largely through the stories of other people who changed my life as I tried to help change theirs, of those who supported me, including those I loved and lost, and of the mistakes I made along the way.”
Alfred A. Knopf will publish the memoir, which it says will be “remarkably candid” and “richly detailed.” While Clinton writes about major issues and cultural wars since he left office, the publisher also indicated that Clinton will share his experiences during the 2008 and 2016 elections, when his wife, Hillary Clinton, ran for the presidency. The recently released Netflix series, 3 Body Problem, has taken the internet by storm. Whispers of its greatness have been heard in all corners of Hollywood and it has done an excellent job adapting from its source material, a 2008 book of the same name written by Cixin Liu. However, when words on paper are turned into something like action, plot lines are bound to get changed and things get lost in translation.

Although the series was heavily praised for its loyalty to the book, there were some major changes made to it in regards to the story, especially on the global scale. While the creators made such a change to introduce a bigger playing field for story-telling, one country has become quite upset with how it was portrayed.

Jost said the special edition of the Bible “that also includes, the Constitution, the lyrics to Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and I assume God’s letter of resignation.”

Jost then cut to a clip of Trump alleging he has “many” Bibles at home, with the comedian adding, “I actually believe he has many Bibles. I’m sure he has been sent thousands of Bibles with a note saying, ‘Please read this.'”

Donald Trump‘s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), has recently unveiled a new song that has been met with scathing criticism – even from many of her own social media followers.
Last year, Lara showcased her musical aspirations with a widely mocked cover of Tom Petty‘s iconic hit, “I Won’t Back Down.” Her latest track, titled “Anything is Possible,” now faces similar derision from internet critics.
The song itself is intended as an inspirational ballad and features lyrics such as “Don’t think, just jump / You can’t give up / Know that anything is possible.”
Numerous X users among Lara’s have not held back in their scrutiny. “‘Anything’ isn’t possible,” quipped one user. “Even auto-tune couldn’t salvage your karaoke-like voice. Just leave us alone and walk away. You have the means to travel anywhere on a private plane with your wealth.

While moderator Stephen Colbert gathered with the trio in an armchair conversation, dubbing them “champion talkers,” the occasion was frequently interrupted by protestors inside the theater. Throughout different moments of the event, attendees would shout over the discussion,...

Update: Protesters interrupted President Joe Biden’s conversation with his predecessors, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, a signature feature of the blockbuster fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall.
The disruption isn’t all that surprising, given that many of Biden’s events have seen hecklers calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. This time, according to a pool report, one of the protesters was yelling obscenities about a nuclear war with Russia. Other protesters interrupted over the situation in Gaza.
When one protester interrupted, Obama snapped back, “You can’t just talk and not listen… That’s what the other side does.”
Stephen Colbert, moderating the conversation, first asked what was at stake in the election.

Joe Biden’s New York fundraiser this evening with Barack Obama and Bill Clinton is expected to raise more than $25 million, an enormous haul for a one-evening event.
Biden’s reelection campaign has heavily promoted the Radio City Music Hall gathering, which will include musical performances by Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Lizzo, Cynthia Erivo and Lea Michele, among others.
Around 5,000 are expected to attend the event, while the campaign also has been raising smaller-dollar contributions via an online contest in which participants could win a trip to New York and a photo with the three presidents. Proceeds go to the Biden Victory Fund, a joint committee of the Biden Campaign, the Democratic National Committee and state parties. The fund accepts individual donations up to $929,600.
