Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was the recent addition to one of the most beloved superhero series in recent times. Not only did it manage to maintain the hype of the first film, it also outdid it perfectly, not only setting up iconic characters for the next film but also telling an excellent story in a visually stunning manner.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Many would call the Spider-Verse series a perfect franchise and one of the biggest reasons for this is its directors and animators. It is quite a well-known fact in the film industry at this point that being a VFX artist is not easy. Marvel has gained a reputation for overworking these employees to an extreme degree and it would seem that they are not alone in this.

"Ever wondered what goes into drawing your favorite animated characters?" Now that voting has finished for the 96th Academy Awards, The Academy is getting back into promoting and featuring certain movies nominated for an Academy Award. Their latest video is "Drawn To The Moment" - it's a 4 minute short film featuring various artists from a few of the Best Animated Movie nominees for a session where they draw their character(s) winning an Oscar. They probably asked Hayao Miyazaki to do this too, but I'm sure he said no. They ended up with: Jared Mathews, an animator on the Best Animated Short nominee Ninety-Five Senses; Joaquim Dos Santos & Justin K. Thompson two of the co-directors on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Pablo Berger, direct of the delightful movie Robot Dreams. They all talk about what makes their characters so unique while envisioning them winning an Oscar. I wish they got...

The Spider-Verse animated movies centered around Miles Morales spanning across different universes are now one of the most revered of Spider-Man movies. Setting a precedent for how superhero movies should be, the two flicks are a complete package having every ingredient (and more!) that makes a movie successful.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
While the first film went on to earn a much-deserved Oscar, the second film, Across the Spider-Verse, has been hailed as one of the best web-slinger sequels of all time. Yet the second movie would have never turned out to be as good if it was not for the test audience. With roughly six weeks to go before its release, the makers had to scramble to find a new ending since the fans hated the original one and ultimately it was one of Star Wars’ darkest moments that ended up inspiring them.

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sling-shotted past the competition to dominate the 51st Annie Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The Sony Animation sequel snared Best Feature and six other trophies — the same number that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse scored at the 2019 Annies — setting it up as the front-runner for the Animated Feature Oscar next month.

In case you didn’t know, animation directors are also auteurs. According to Yahoo Finance, the global animation market reached more than $400 billion at the end of 2023. That was up from $391 billion one year before. And yet, animated projects are not automatically covered by the WGA, are separate from the DGA, and are consistently overlooked for their filmmaking achievements.

As the nominees for the animated feature Oscar were unveiled this year, one thing was clear: 2D and 2D-influenced animated films are dominating awards season.
Among this year’s nominees, “The Boy and the Heron,” “Nimona,” “Robot Dreams” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” all used traditional 2D techniques or other methods to create a 2D look. Even the CG “Elemental” shows 2D influences across the many environments of Element City. And as the Academy nominates what might be helmer Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, it seems as though the impact of 2D is being recognized once again after CG having dominated the animation space for so long.
The 2D animation of today isn’t quite like cartoons of the past. With new techniques at their disposal, filmmakers are expanding the visuals they can create to tell rich, compelling stories. It’s very often a 2D look that’s intended for...

It takes multiple hands of masters, artists and filmmakers to bring a story to life, no matter the cinematic medium. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated categories to recognize the achievements of artists working on animation, documentary features, and shorts, an opportunity to be rewarded. However, just because you directed or produced one of these specialty films doesn’t mean these contributions will be officially named in the Oscar nominations.
To the untrained Oscar eye, it might not be obvious that despite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” picking up a nomination for best animated feature, one of the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, was not among the listed nominees. It’s an arbitrary rule of the Academy that only four “teams” may be recognized in the animated feature category.
The official nominees from “Spider-Verse” are Dos Santos’ fellow directors Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, producing partners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller,...

Oppenheimer continues with its awards season domination, picking up 13 2024 Ee BAFTA Film Awards nominations. BAFTA also found a lot to admire in Poor Things, nominating it 11 times in categories including Best Film and Leading Actress (Emma Stone).
Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest received nine nominations, followed by Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Maestro with seven. All of Us Strangers was nominated in six categories, and Barbie and Saltburn received five nominations.
“The 38 films nominated by BAFTA voters today span an extraordinary range of genres and stories. The field this year is incredibly strong. Awards season continues. For a year with a lot of notable box office anomalies, the award recognitions are stacked with popular choices. The Golden Globes kicked things off, and then the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards started to show audiences who are seen as the favorites to win this year. Then, the Emmys threw a spotlight on the achievements made in television this past year, and now the list for the 2024 BAFTAs have been announced.
As seen in the previous awards ceremonies, Oppenheimer and Poor Things lead the charge in nominations. Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb film is a stunning achievement for the director as he is known to put out summer films that straddle the line of prestigious awards movies, and Oppenheimer is finally cracking through with nominations for his actors’ performances, as well as his directing and screenwriting. Emma Stone has also been the favorite this year with Poor Things,...

When Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse voice actors Hailee Steinfeld, Daniel Kaluuya and Shameik Moore took the stage to present best screenplay at the Golden Globes earlier this month, the trio claimed their intro had been written by studio executives.
But, instead, it was Spider-Verse writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller who crafted the memorably stilted dialogue, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
“We were really happy that they wanted to have Hailee, Shameik and Daniel present and present a prestigious award,” Lord tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I think it’s a nice acknowledgment that the cast of our movie is full of Oscar nominees. Hailee is an Oscar nominee and an Academy member. Kaluuya is an [Oscar] winner. And we wanted to make sure they looked great. It’s a fun show, but you want to make sure you don’t go up there and whiff on a bit. So I...

As we get ready to close out 2023, it’s time to look back at the films that entertained us and left a lasting impression. It was the year of Barbie vs. Oppenheimer (affectionately referred to as “Barbenheimer”) battling for the summer box office, and The Flash with Michael Keaton returning as the Caped Crusader in a film that fell short of reviving the DC movie franchise. A classic coming-of-age story from the 1970s finally found its way to the screen, and 2023 also served up yet another delightful adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel.
The following films represent my personal favorites of 2023. These films, from a wide range of genres, mesmerized me and reminded audiences of the magic of movies.

Acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki earned his first Golden Globe Award nomination on the strength of his semi-autobiographical fantasy film The Boy and the Heron, capping a big week for the film that this weekend opened to a record-breaking $12.8 million, becoming the first original anime title in history to top the North American box office.
The Boy and the Heron was nominated for the animated feature Golden Globe alongside Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Elemental, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Suzume and Wish. Both The Boy and the Heron and Spider-Verse received additional nominations for original motion picture score.

Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is a box office behemoth, making $380 million in the U.S. and $690 million worldwide. What does composer Daniel Pemberton think about those huge numbers for the sequel? “It’s always really nice when a movie actually super connects with people,” he tells us. “I don’t think I’ve ever done any movie that’s connected as intensely as ‘Spider Verse.’ It is nice when [box office] does correlate to great work, and I’m really proud of what all of us did on this film.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The “Barbenheimer” craze continues with Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” being named among AFI Awards 2023 top 10 best films of the year. Netflix led studios with two movies making the list — Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro” and Todd Haynes’ black comedy “May December.”
With an eclectic mix of critically acclaimed and consumer friendly titles, the list of top movies also includes films by newcomers (Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives”), veterans (Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers”) and stylish visionaries.
The AFI honors contribute to momentum in various awards campaigns as the holiday break looms, as voters catch up on screening multiple titles. A strong bellwether for the Oscars’ best picture category, some of the notable omissions include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Ava DuVernay’s “Origin,” Blitz Bazawule’s “The Color Purple” and Ben Affleck’s “Air.

A broad range of titles, animation styles and plenty of music define this season’s animated feature race, with some expected contenders still to debut.
For instance, as the studio celebrates its centennial, Walt Disney Animation Studios hopes to grab one of the five nomination slots with its Nov. 22 musical Wish, which tells the story of how Disney’s wishing star came to be. Its voice cast is led by Ariana DeBose as young protagonist Asha and Chris Pine as villainous King Magnifico. The cast performs a collection of original songs from Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, including “This Wish,” “I’m a Star” and “This Is the Thanks I Get.” Oscar winner Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn direct, and Disney Animation chief creative officer and Oscar winner Jennifer Lee is a writer and executive producer.

For Kemp Powers, coming on board to direct “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (alongside Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. We were trying to create our own standalone film. It felt like a better attitude to have going into it than a traditional sequel,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is swinging to Netflix in time for Halloween.
Months after dominating at the box office, the superhero sequel will premiere Oct. 31 on the streaming service only in the U.S.
Sony Pictures, which has a licensing deal with Netflix, released “Across the Spider-Verse” in theaters this May. The animated adventure collected a staggering $381 million in North America and $690 million globally to stand as the sixth-highest grossing film of the year. It managed to surpass the entire box office run of its predecessor, 2018’s Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” ($384 million worldwide) after less than two weeks on the big screen. A third installment, “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” opens theatrically in 2024.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson and Kemp Powers directed the film, which picks up with Miles Morales — this universe’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man — as he catapults across the Multiverse and encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.
