The demise of disco was greatly accelerated by the cultural impact of the infamous Disco Demolition Night of 1979 in Chicago’s Comiskey Park. While rockers have used the word in a pejorative sense for years, DJs, artists, impresarios, and aficionados know that disco—both the genre and the subculture—not only has deep roots but has lived on under various aliases, inspiring the evolution of music and keeping people moving in various funky ways. Le freak, c’est toujours chic!
These are the ideas, plot points and storylines that Toronto filmmakers Omar Majeed (“Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam”) and Peter Mishara explore in their documentary feature “Disco’s Revenge,” which had its world premiere Thursday in Hot Docs’ Pop/Life strand.
The film, which screens again Friday, is set for release this year. Elevation Pictures will distribute it in Canada; Republic Pictures has acquired rights outside of Canada.

Independent dance label Armada Music, founded in 2003 by Dutch trance DJ and producer Armin van Buuren, Maykel Piron and manager and agent David Lewis, said Tuesday that its investment vehicle Beat Music Fund has acquired Amsterdam-based music publisher Cloud 9 Music, bolstering its publishing division.
Cloud 9’s roster includes the likes of U.S. house music veteran Green Velvet, aka Curtis Jones, aka Cajmere, South Africa’s That Girl, and Dutch DJ and producer Hardwell.
“As part of the acquisition, the teams of Armada Music’s existing publishing company, Armada Publishing B.V., and Cloud 9 Music will merge to form Armada Music Publishing,” the companies said. “Employees from Cloud 9 Music will join the team, effectively tripling its headcount.”
Financial terms weren’t disclosed. “This strategic move underscores Armada’s mission to position itself as the best partner in the in-demand global electronic dance industry, projected to reach $20.9 billion by 2033,” the firm said.

Independent dance label Armada Music — founded in 2003 by Dutch trance DJ and producer Armin van Buuren, Maykel Piron and manager and agent David Lewis — has launched Beat (for “Best Ever Acquired Tracks”), a dance music investment company.
Backed by U.S.-based Pinnacle Financial Partners, the fund plans to invest $100 million in its first two years, with the mission of “acquiring and exploiting recording and music publishing catalogs” amid a flurry of catalog deals across the music sector in recent years. Beat eventually plans to grow its investment to at least $500 million in the coming years.
The investment company’s first acquisitions include two big names. They are for Kms Records’ master recordings catalog from house and techno legend Kevin Saunderson, as well as for the master and publishing catalog of L.A.-based Russian trance DJ and producer Arty, also known as Alpha 9. “Both catalogs of masters will be...

Tight knit as it is, the Detroit techno scene is not without its controversies. We provided a brief history of the genre to supplement our recent coverage of Movement 2016, but even we admittedly left out one of its most outspoken early figures: Eddie Fowlkes.
Fowlkes released music shortly before any of the Belleville Three, the trio comprised of Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson whom are widely credited as the originators of Detroit techno. As he told us in an interview during Detroit Techno Week, he wishes to not be associated with the Belleville Three and believes that it was devised by May as a means of keeping him and other early techno pioneers from receiving proper credit.
Fowlkes’ resentment towards May is nothing new. We asked May about it as a side note when we met up with him on the same day, and he told us the...

No record of the history of techno is complete without a mention of the Belleville Three. Berlin may be have emerged as the genre’s unofficial capital for the last decade and a half of its history, but Detroit DJ/producers Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins are largely cited as its original pioneers.
Be that as it may, during an era in which techno’s popularity is at an all-time high, the Belleville Three have been somewhat removed from the conversation.
As we recently touched on in our Movement 2016 coverage, May, Atkins and Saunderson met as teenagers in the rural Detroit suburb of Belleville. For having taught the other two how to produce electronic music, Atkins is often referred to as “The Originator.” In addition, he’s credited for coining the term “techno” itself with the 1988 compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, which he adopted from...

After its tenth anniversary, there’s no denying that Movement has lived up to its name. The Detroit music festival once again succeeded in drawing the techno elite from every corner of the globe to celebrate the genre in the city of its birthplace, but this year’s edition in particular served as a special homecoming of sorts.
After all, the extra year digit was but one milestone reached by the techno community this past week. Shortly before the event took place, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan declared the week of May 23rd-30th Detroit Techno Week. Following that, a business report presented a couple of days later at the International Music Summit in Ibiza revealed that the genre surpassed all others in Beatport downloads last year. Then, on the first day of the festival, the Movement Main Stage was headlined by none other than Kraftwerk – a group whose music tremendously...

Only in this day and age could a politician win over a segment of a city’s population by appealing to its techno enthusiasts. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has declared May 23rd-30th Detroit Techno Week just in time for the 2016 edition of Movement Detroit – and it has a certificate of recognition and everything.
As we’ve mentioned before, Detroit has been revered as the birthplace of techno since as far back as Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins (known collectively as the Belleville Three) formulated the genre in the ’80s. Movement Detroit has emerged as a mecca for the original “other” genre since its inaugural edition in 2000, and it falls conveniently on the end of the date range specified by Mayor Duggan.
“Detroit becomes a tourist destination for music lovers,” Mayor Mike Duggan wrote in the certificate. “I encourage all to come out and celebrate the festivities, as...

These days you can’t talk about cruise ship festivals without mentioning Holy Ship!, but long before Ship fam was even remotely a thing, Groove Cruise had the seafaring dance music scene on lock. The relatively newer Los Angeles sailings have just announced their 2015 lineup, and the roster’s looking as stacked as ever.
Where Holy Ship! features largely Edm headliners, the lineup of Groove Cruise appeals to more of the underground enthusiast’s sensibilities. While mainstagers like Dvbbs, Dirty South and Cazzette find their names among the ranks, the stages are loaded with elder statesmen like Kevin Saunderson, Paul Oakenfold and Guy Gerber as well.
Groove Cruise Los Angeles departs on October 23rd, making stops in Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico before returning on the 26th. The original Miami cruises regularly take place earlier in the year, and are slated to return on January 22nd-26th of 2016.

DJing is an art form. Since its early days as a staple of 1970s discos and 1980s hip-hop, it has gradually become a curatorial style of musical presentation that is practised by many, but perfected by few. From the four-to-the-floor consistency of house and techno, to the breakbeat insanity of jungle, to the Mc-backing UK garage and grime producers of the early 2000s, to the blaring HD bass-heavy drops of modern day Edm, DJing is dance culture’s foundation.
There have been so many gifted DJs that have gone on to become true legends of the format. Frankie Knuckles, Carl Cox, Ellen Allien, Kevin Saunderson, Afrika Bambaataa, Goldie, Annie Mac, Aphex Twin, Slimzee, Total Freedom, Derrick May, Nina Kraviz, DJ Rashad… The list of DJs that have taken the medium into new and exciting areas across its history is endless, and covers many genres and many eras.

Jack Ü is all the rage in Edm nowadays, and love them or hate them, you can’t deny that their global takeover is under way. The project between bass music icons Skrillex and Diplo just wrapped up their Full Flex Express train tour throughout Canada, and they’ve followed it up by announcing their first-ever show in dance music mecca Ibiza at the 5th anniversary celebration of weekly party series, Together, at Amnesia.
In addition to Jack Ü, the occasion will feature performances by the likes of Chase & Status, Kevin Saunderson and Oliver Dollar. While Diplo and Skrillex have played back to back at Amnesia before, the performance will mark the first time they’ve done so as a duo.
Jack Ü‘s Ibiza debut at the 5th anniversary celebration of Together at Amnesia will take place on Tuesday, August 25th.

It's still January, but already Detroit is looking forward to a weekend in the middle of May, when sweaty music lovers will crowd Hart Plaza for the city's annual electronic music festival, Movement.
The thumping bass and substance-fueled (so we've heard) event, which will take place May 25, 26 and 27, has already released the Phase One lineup. And there's some very notable names, like Carl Craig and Derrick May.
Tickets are already available on the Movement website, where they're counting down the days (114, in case you were wondering), hours, minutes and seconds until the sound of techno techno fills the air. Relive the madness from last year -- and get ready for Movement 2013 -- with help from the pulse-quickening trailer posted above. A text list of Phase One performers follows, if you're into that sort of thing. Are you looking forward to the electronic music festival, or will you be avoiding Hart Plaza?...

With a new expanded two-weekend format, a massive new main stage structure, and a big 15th anniversary to celebrate, it was obvious Ultra Music Festival would be going big for 2013.
Instead, it went massive. The just-released Phase 2 lineup reveals Ultra will host its most diverse and thorough lineup yet this March in Miami's Bayfront Park: crowd faves like Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Dirty South are back, but the lineup also includes a slew of live acts including Snoop Dogg and Sleigh Bells.
"What we've achieved with this edition's ocean of talent and stage production is we feel unprecedented," said Ultra founder, CEO and president Russell Faibisch. "As the industry we work in continues to explode, with so much talent emerging and the taste of our consumer changing in the process, diversity was key."

Is electro-house producer Wolfgang Gartner up next for a Deadmau5-like surge in popularity?
Well, consider this: Gartner's newest single with British house-music producer Mark Knight, "Conscindo," held the #1 spot on Beatport's dance-music charts for two weeks in July, and in the past two years, he's had eight other tracks make it to the top, including Beatport's best-selling track of 2009, "Wolfgang's 5th Symphony."
Then there's his awards nominations: He was nominated in the DJ Awards' Best Newcomer category and also made the top-100 list for America's Best DJ. Voting is under way for both.
Gartner has remixed everyone from Britney Spears to Timbaland and Black Eyed Peas and is currently working with Tiësto, Will.I.Am and Kaskade on separate forthcoming releases.
