The North American premiere of the film >A Single Shot was shown at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, which stars Sam Rockwell as hunter John Moon. The 116 minute film was shot in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States and was directed by David Rosenthal. Written by Matthew F. Jones (who also wrote the book), the film follows the hunter as he accidentally kills a young woman and finds a large amount of money on her. As he tries to escape the wrath of the criminals looking to find him and the money, he finds himself putting his survival skills to the test for his ultimate existence.

David M. Rosenthal’s A Single Shot joins the ranks of some superior 2013 thrillers, the uniting factor being their complete grasp of a sense of place and time and their ability to unconditionally exploit their setting for the benefit of the story and characters. Mud, The Frozen Ground, Scenic Route and now this poetic backwoods chiller all place a compelling central character in a potentially life threatening ordeal, surrounds them with superior supporting players and executes their motives and actions with fluidity and respect. This year has so far seen a resurgence in this type of yarn – a stripped down, character based story that extracts its involving tenseness through simple actions, not bombast and explosions.

USA, 2013
Sam Rockwell’s secret weapon is not his gift of gab, but his ability to use that chatty nature to disarm everyone around him. Rockwell, so rakish and charming in this summer’s indie hit The Way, Way Back, isn’t the kind of actor who can’t play taciturn, but deliberately robbing him of his quirky, squirrelly speech patterns is always a bit of a letdown. As such, so too is A Single Shot, a grim, drab crime drama with Rockwell playing strong and silent at the center, leaning too heavily on the latter quality.
Rockwell is John Moon (a nice, if unintentional, nod to one of his best films, the 2009 sci-fi drama Moon), an estranged husband and father living in the hills of West Virginia in a nondescript little shack. One morning, while on the hunt for some deer,...

Chicago – Sam Rockwell does no wrong. He takes parts in movies major (“Iron Man 2”) and minor (“A Single Shot,” now available On Demand and opening theatrically in limited release this Friday, September 20, 2013) and makes decisions that other actors wouldn’t even consider. He is so completely, believably in the moment.
You don’t see the wheels turning like you do in so many other actor’s performances. He feels natural even in incredibly unnatural situations. He’s the best thing about “A Single Shot,” a film with echoes of “A Simple Plan” & “Winter’s Bone,” elevating it above its flaws as he has done for other films so many times before.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Finding the deep emotional territory that he hasn’t really mined since his underrated work in “Snow Angels,” Rockwell plays the deeply haunted John Moon, an average guy in a rural community who seems on the edge...

Even before John Moon, the lonely woodsman played by Sam Rockwell at the center of David M. Rosenthal's "A Single Shot," accidentally shoots a young woman while hunting the desolate area near his trailer, his world has fallen apart. Rosenthal's adaptation of Matthew F. Jones' 1996 novel features a familiar arrangement of criminal events and showdowns, but the movie compensates for much of its familiar shortcomings with an effectively ominous atmosphere. The opening minutes, in which the grave-faced, bearded John roams the countryside in search of prey, establish a sense of isolation that dominates the movie and nearly rescues it from the formula that eventually takes shape. Following that inadvertent death, John scrambles to hide the body before discovering a pile of money in the late woman's tent. In a desperate bid to win back his estranged wife (Kelly Reilly) and their young child, John stashes the money, only...

If the movies have taught us anything, it's this: Don't expect an easy time of hanging on to satchels of cash you find in the woods. David M. Rosenthal's sturdy, nasty rural noir, based on Matthew F. Jones's novel, is so sharp and rusted through that, after taking it in, you'll likely need a tetanus shot. After he accidentally shoots and kills a woman while hunting in the forest near his trailer home, abandoned family man John Moon (Sam Rockwell) happens upon a gun, a note, and a retirement fund's worth of stacked C-notes. Complications ensue, of course, especially after John sends some cash to the wife who wants nothing to do with him anymore. (She's played by Kelly Reilly, who is given little to work with.) He gets phone threats; his friends, mostly bearded roughnecks, behave like ma...

A dark, tightly wound backwoods thriller with a twist, "A Single Shot" premiered earlier this year at the Berlinale, and hits theaters September 20. Well-designed and executed by director David M. Rosenthal ("Janie Jones") from Matthew F. Jones’s script and novel of the same name, the film features uniformly fine performances by a cast including Sam Rockwell as an unlucky ex-farmer and hunter, Kelly Reilly as his estranged wife, an unrecognizable Jeffrey Wright as his alcoholic friend, William H. Macy as a gimpy small-town lawyer, and Joe Anderson and Jason Isaacs as seriously creepy denizens of the deep, wet forestlands. Atli Örvarsson’s eery score and Edward Grau’s claustrophobic cinematography further the finger-clenching suspense. A review roundup is below: Guardian:As befits the blood-and-mud spattered backdrop, there's much gruesome razor-slicing and corpse-lugging on display: a forceful reminder, you would suppose, of the elemental natural forces at work. A hunting accident that leaves a young woman dead and the discovery of a box of cash. What could possibly go wrong? As you might expect, a lot, if that simple premise sets off a chain of events in the upcoming thriller "A Single Shot." A pretty solid ensemble is lined up for this one with Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, William H. Macy, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly and Ophelia Lovibond all starring in the tale of a hunter who accidentally shoots a teenage girl and then discovers a small fortune while trying to dispose of her body. But when killers come looking for the cash, he's forced to defend his life and family. The film is an adaptation of the book by Matthew F. Jones and is directed by David M. When John Moon (Sam Rockwell) accidentally shoots a young woman and discovers a bag full of cash, he has to make the fateful decision whether to provide for his separating family or come out clean. His struggle to conceal both the death and the money formulates a whirlwind of consequences that ultimately heightens into a battle for survival. With overall great performances by Rockwell and Jeffrey Wright (Simon), the film is both widely suspenseful and comfortably predictable. Treading the line of a Hitchcockian thriller, the film definitely tests the limits of an ordinary man as he takes on plight to stay alive. With some of the year’s most surprising scenes, A Single Shot will bring you to the edge of your seat and shock you, making it by far one of the best films debuted at Tribeca 2013 this year.

A gun. A dead woman. A box of money. A (sort of) innocent man. A hunt. While David M. Rosenthal’s A Single Shot doesn’t shy away from some conventional-to-the-point-of-cliché plot points for his latest feature, the crime drama packs a punch thanks to its stellar cast, stunning cinematography, and a horror-tinged score that continually leaves its audience on edge. Oh, and the violence. Did we forget the violence? There’s violence. Penned by Matthew F. Jones (who adapted his own novel for the script), A Single Shot is a suitably intense showcase for star Sam Rockwell’s dramatic chops. As lonely loser John Moon, the film rests on the actor’s ability to engage and excite his audience, a feat that he mostly pulls off with ease. A near-wordless opening sequence plunges us deep into both John’s day-to-day life and the shocking event that will turn everything upside down for him, as...

David M. Rosenthal’s anticipated A Single Shot premiered out in Berlin earlier in the year, and the early reviews have been very promising.
Descriptions of ‘noir’ and ‘haunting’ qualities abounded from the Berlinale back in February, and it’s a film I’ve been looking forward to even more since its debut.
Sam Rockwell takes the lead of a brilliant cast. And whilst we’re still not yet sure about when we can expect it to arrive in theatres, the first teaser trailer has debuted online, and it’s as powerful as you’d expect it to be.

In 2011, writer-director David M. Rosenthal won notice at the Tribeca Film Festival with his music-fueled feature Janie Jones, which starred Abigail Breslin and Alessandro Nivola in an unconventional family drama. This year he's returning to the fast-approaching fest with A Single Shot. Matthew F. Jones adapts his own crime novel into a seemingly chilling thriller that stars Sam Rockwell as a desperate man. Last spring when Rockwell signed on to play John Moon, a role Michael Fassbender was formerly slated to play. Moon is an impoverished poacher whose hunting skills keep him in trouble but free from starvation. However, hunting off-season can be dangerous for reasons beyond crossing paths with forest rangers. With the titular single shot, Moon kicks off a chain of events that bring more heat on his tail than he'd ever imagined. A Single Shot boasts an incredible supporting cast that includes Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, Academy...

Later this year, audiences will get a chance to see Sam Rockwell have some fun as he helps Liam James work through some social anxiety over a tumultuous summer turned life-changing experience in The Way, Way Back (read my Sundance review here). But before that, he's getting gritty and serious in A Single Shot, which is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month after premiering in Berlin earlier this year. In the film Rockwell plays John Moon, who gets involved in an accidental crime, all while trying to get his family back together. The door is almost closed on the 63rd International Berlin Film Festival and while none of this year's awards have yet to be handed out, you can find all of our reviews from the festival below. ★★★☆☆ Based on Matthew F. Jones' dark and atmospheric novel of the same name, David M. Rosenthal's A Single Shot (2013) finally makes it's debut at this year's Berlin Film Festival. Staring Us actor Sam Rockwell and boasting an enticing supporting cast that includes William H. Macy, Kelly Reilly and Jason Isaacs, A Single Shot is, despite its evident qualities, a film that ironically misses the mark. John Moon (Rockwell) spends his days alone in his isolated trailer lamenting the recent exodus of his family, breaking the monotony of his wearisome life by entering the neighbouring forest and partaking in some prohibited deer hunting.

Last time we reported on A Single Shot, it was 2009 and an up-and-coming young star called Michael Fassbender was attached to take the lead. Fast-forward to now and the film is complete, but stars a ruggedly hirsute Sam Rockwell instead. Heralding its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, a handful of new stills has arrived. The film started shooting last April, and has managed to stay more-or-less under the movie news radar, despite a powerhouse cast sees Rockwell supported by Willam H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, Melissa Leo and Kelly Reilly. It's directed by cinematographer and former documentarian David M. Rosenthal (Janie Jones, Falling Up), and written by Matthew F. Jones, who adapted his own novel. The story involves a hunter, John Moon (Rockwell) who's down on his luck after the loss of his family farm but is able still to put food on the table as a master poacher.

Gone are the days of a mangled production history – A Single Shot must have started and stopped a couple of times, switched casts before helmer David M. Rosenthal (Janie Jones) along with thesps Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Melissa Leo, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, Kelly Reilly, Joe Anderson and Ophelia Lovibond were lassoed in March of this year. The book to film adaptation of Matthew F. Jones’s novel – a crime thriller filmed in Vancouver comes equipped with Cinematographer Eduard Grau (A Single Man), Composer Atli Örvarsson (The Burning Plain) , Production Designer David Brisbin (In the Cut), and Editor Dan Robinson (Daniel Mulloy’s short film filmography).

Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, and more to feature in David M. Rosenthal’s film adaptation of Matthew F. Jones’ A Single Shot.
If there was a better or more worthy crime fiction re-release last year, I certainly didn’t read it. The 2011Mulholland Books edition of Matthew F. Jones’ 1996 novel, A Single Shot, was justifiably lauded as a standout in a strong year, new books or old, for crime fiction in general, and particularly for what has come to be called (love it or hate it) “rural noir,” with strong works by writers such as Frank Bill, Daniel Woodrell and Joe R. Lansdale also hitting shelves.
News that A Single Shot had been optioned was cause for celebration enough, but with the project full steam ahead and talents like Sam Rockwell (who, in interests of full disclosure, is possibly this reporter’s hero — let’s face it, he even...

It was a rather nice surprise, learning that Sam Rockwell already began shooting a starring vehicle. We just don’t have enough of them, you know? Now, Deadline has the full cast for A Single Shot, which is already confirmed to have William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright, and Jason Isaacs on board; the latest names thrown into the fray are no worse, being Melissa Leo, Joe Anderson, Kelly Reilly, and Ophelia Lovibond.
David M. Rosenthal is directing A Single Shot — adapted by Matthew F. Jones, from his own novel — which stars Rockwell as John Moon, a hunter who comes across some money after accidentally killing a young girl. With angry townspeople and “hardened killers on his trail,” Moon is forced to save his family and his own skin. Unanimous Entertainment, Unified Pictures, Media House Capital, and Bron Studios are producing.

Fans of writer Matthew F. Jones have a lot to celebrate. His novel “A Single Shot” is about to be turned into a big screen thriller, and the names attached are enough to make even the most hardened film cynic squeal with glee. Deadline Charlottesville reports that production has now begun on the adaptation, which is under the direction of David M. Rosenthal (Janie Jones) and stars a cast that includes names like Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright, Joe Anderson, Jason Isaacs, Kelly Riley, Ophelia Lovibond, and Melissa Leo. Jeez, Mr. Rosenthal, you had me at Sam Rockwell. But for those not sold just at the sight of all those talented names listed together, take a look at the Amazon plot synopsis of Jones’s novel: “John Moon lives alone in a trailer on the land that was his family’s farm until the bank foreclosed on it years ago (for reasons he has never...

It's been a long, strange trip for "A Single Shot." Seemingly stuck in development hell, the project had an array of names circling over the past couple of years -- Michael Fassbender, Alessandro Nivola, Emily Mortimer, Terrence Howard, Juliette Lewis, James Badge Dale, Juno Temple, Leslie Mann, Thomas Haden Church -- but began finally firming things up this week. Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs and William H. Macy (who has been attached through various incarnations) were confirmed, and now we know the rest of the folks joining them.
Deadline reveal that Brit actress Ophelia Lovibond ("No Strings Attached," "London Boulevard") and Melissa Leo round out the cast along with Joe Anderson and Kelly Reilly. No exact word yet on their parts, but with cameras now rolling on the pic, we guess we'll find out soon enough. Based on the book by Matthew F. Jones, the story follows Rockwell's John Moon,...

Rosenthal-directed thriller that stars Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright, Joe Anderson, Jason Isaacs, Kelly Reilly, Ophelia Lovibond, and Melissa Leo. An adaptation of the Matthew F. As the hunter becomes the hunted, John Moon is forced to defend his family and fight for his life. Jones wrote the script. After gestating for a few years, it finally appears as though Matthew F. Jones’ novel, 'A Single Shot', will finally be hitting the big screen, and in a huge way.
Variety reports that Jeffrey Wright has joined the film’s cast, with Jason Isaacs, Sam Rockwell and William H. Macy rounding things out. Macy is the only connective tissue throughout all of these recent incarnations of the film, which will follow the story of a hunter who kills a young woman, only to find a small load of cash when getting rid of the body.

If "A Single Shot" sounds vaguely familiar, it's because it has been on our radar under various guises for some time now. A number of cast members have joined and left the project over the past couple of years, but David M. Rosenthal's film has now made it in front of cameras with Sam Rockwell and William H. Macy (who has stuck with the pic through various incarnations) taking lead roles.
However, the casting merry-go-round does not stop there. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Juliette Lewis, who were previously attached, have both left the project, Jeffrey Wright has joined the cast to replace the outgoing Forest Whitaker, and Jason Isaacs is also now expected on the Vancouver set.
