The groundwork was laid for Nicole Newnham’s Oscar-contending documentary The Disappearance of Shere Hite back when the director was just a girl.
“I was 12 years old when I discovered The Hite Report in my mother’s nightstand drawer,” the filmmaker has written, “sneaking it to read for myself, to learn about the world of female sexuality, a world that remained cloaked in shame and mystery for me as for so many others.”
For a time, The Hite Report: A National Study of Female Sexuality could be found in nightstand drawers or displayed less surreptitiously on bookstore shelves and in library stacks across the country, its author a fixture on talk shows and top of mind in the zeitgeist. Interest in her work was by no means limited to the U.S.: Hite’s study was translated into more than a dozen languages.

If you're looking for any sort of indication as to what kind of person "Masters of Sex" creator Michelle Ashford is, know that during the 20 minutes she spoke with Indiewire during the 2015 TCA Winter Press Tour, the hotel suite echoed with a variety of weird and annoying alarm-like ringing noises. But she never expressed anything other than patience and amusement, while answering our questions. Read More: Review: 'Masters of Sex' Season 3, Episode 1: 'Parliament of Owls,' Perched on the Cusp of the Sexual Revolution Those questions included: How much does the shadow of "Mad Men" hover over the series about William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Victoria Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) researching sex in the 1950s and 1960s? Will "Masters of Sex" ever recast its leads, especially if the show moves decades forward into the future? And what makes "Masters of Sex's" portrayal of sex different from other shows exploring the same.

We've been waiting almost a year for the return of Masters of Sex (curse you, prestige-television scheduling!), and now that the season premiere is just days away, it's time to start speculating about what season three has in store. Thanks to Thomas Maier's book Masters of Sex, upon which the show is based, we don't have to speculate blindly. Maier's book (and, to be honest, William Masters's Wikipedia page) provides many potential spoilers about what lies ahead for Bill, Gini, and "the work," which is the true third co-star of the series. Keep in mind that even though many of these events happened after 1966 (when season three will pick back up), the show has a history of playing fast and loose with the chronology of Masters and Johnson's work — and we can't yet rule out the possibility of another time-jump later in the season. Here are six story...

Michael Sheen ('Masters of Sex') on why he'll always sympathize with Bill Masters [Exclusive Video]'
"I will never lose sympathy for him because I'm depicting someone who is fighting for his life," says actor Michael Sheen regarding his character, real-life sex researcher William Masters, in Showtime's "Masters of Sex." He likens Masters's story to the myth of the Minotaur, banished by his father to a labyrinth: "People are sent as punishment into the labyrinth and they come across this monster who just destroys them, and yet that monster is actually this child who has been abused by his father." Over the course of the episode, Virginia not only convinces Bill to start examining sexual dysfunction, but to find ways to treat it. Before we hit the Emmy Awards one last group poll. I asked friends which Emmy nominated TV characters mix and matched from different series would they love to see paired up?

Denny: Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory) and Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba on Orange is the New Black) are served a pie. Hilarity ensues. Or: Queen Cersei (Lena Headey) gets sent to Litchfield prison and insults Red's (Kate Mulgrew) cooking on her first day. Delicious scheming and sassy put-downs ensue. And I really want to see Allison Janney and Julie Bowen's characters from Mom and Modern Family get drinks together, just because.

Last week, I covered the PaleyFest red carpet for Showtime's "Masters of Sex" and talked to all of the assembled parties about the period drama's second season, which premieres on July 13 and has just resumed production. By now, hopefully you've watched my interview with Lizzy Caplan and if you haven't, it's worth checking out just for her impression of her Israeli uncle watching her sex scenes. But now it's time to start working through the other interviews. Above, Michael Sheen discusses William Masters' confession of "need" from the first season finale and what it means for that character in terms of evolution or progress. Below, creator Michelle Ashford teases a number of details about the second season, including its mid-year time jump and the show's growing ensemble cast. Stay tuned in the next couple days for my interviews with Teddy Sears, Caitlin Fitzgerald and the awesome Annaleigh Ashford. video...

He was doing “Hamlet” while she was doing “Hot Tub Time Machine,” but Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan proved they are equally endowed with wit and comic timing in a delightful panel appearance at Paley Fest Monday night to promote “Masters of Sex.” The pair plays pioneering sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson in Showtime’s sharp freshman drama, which unfolds in the same era as “Mad Men.”“What does that say about the culture?” Sheen demanded in mock outrage when the mention of “Hot Tub” got raucous applause from the crowd, while his “Hamlet” credential -- he was pulled straight out of a London production to do the Showtime pilot -- elicited “Nothing! Tumbleweeds!” as he put it. To compensate, he leapt up and launched into a soliloquy that he identified as “Act 5, Scene 2.” “How else could it end?” said Caplan about season one’s final moments, in...

Michael Sheen came to the Masters of Sex Q&A at PaleyFest and tried to class up the joint with a lot of talk about playing Hamlet, and reading Arthur Miller as a teen only to discover Miller’s plays had no bad characters — just people making bad choices. Fortunately, he was greatly outnumbered on stage at the Dolby Theatre by the women of Showtime’s 1950s-set drama series about real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson. They wanted to talk about the drudgery of maintaining a ’50s hairdo and the best way to pee in a girdle. Related: ‘Masters Of Sex’ Team Has Sex Talk With TV Critics Sheen, known for playing David Frost in Frost/Nixon and Tony Blair in The Queen, said playing Masters was the “perfect combination” for an actor, because he was a famous historical figure but was...

The Michael J. Fox Show co-star Betsy Brandt has been tapped for one of the leads The Club (formerly known as untitled Susannah Grant), ABC‘s 13-episode upstairs/downstairs drama set at a private country club from CBS TV Studios and ABC Studios. Breaking Bad alumna Brandt, repped by Patty Woo Management and TalentWorks, will play Leslie, the wife of one of the brothers who own the club who just ran off with their father’s trophy-wife stepmother after squandering the club’s finances, leaving behind his wife, who has a legal consulting practice, and their son. For Brandt, the casting is formally in second position to NBC’s low-rated (and benched) Michael J. Fox Show. It marks her second TV casting in the past couple of weeks — Brandt also is set to recur on Showtime’s Masters Of Sex as Dr. William Masters’ (Michael Sheen) new secretary.

Showtime is pairing its two biggest freshman series from 2013 in the summer of 2014.
The cable channel says the second seasons of "Ray Donovan" and "Masters of Sex" will premiere Sunday, July 13. "Ray Donovan" aired in the summer of 2013, but it's an early return for "Masters of Sex," which debuted last fall.
Both shows are coming off successful first years. "Ray Donovan," starring Liev Schreiber as an L.A. fixer with a troubled family life, drew 5.7 million weekly viewers last year (all platforms included), a record for a rookie Showtime series. Season 2 will deal with the fallout from fugitive mobster Sully's (James Woods) death for Ray, his dad (Jon Voight) and the head of the FBI's L.A. office, played by recurring guest star Hank Azaria.
