The Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will conclude its run this spring.
The production, which is currently starring Aaron Tveit (Moulin Rouge!, Fox’s Grease: Live) as Sweeney Todd and Sutton Foster (Younger, The Music Man) as Mrs. Lovett, will close on May 5, as the two leads end their 12-week run in the show.
The musical, directed by Thomas Kail, began performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Feb. 26, 2023, and opened on March 26, with Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford in the starring roles. The production was originally meant to end in January 2024, at the end of their run, according to a spokesperson for the production, but was extended with the casting of Tveit and Foster.

Major stage and musical performers showed for Joe Biden’s reelection campaign Monday, with a Broadway for Biden fundraiser in which the president quipped about his age but also put the campaign in stark terms.
“I’m running because democracy is at stake, because [in] 2024 democracy is on the ballot once again,” Biden said at the event at New York’s Lunt-Fontanne Theater, per a pool report. “And let there be no question: Donald Trump and his Maga Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy. And I will always defend, protect and fight for our democracy.”
Biden also chided Trump for his refusal to criticize Vladimir Putin. “I will not side with dictators like Putin,” Biden said.
The event was announced last month, with appearances by Josh Groban, Ben Platt, Sara Bareilles, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr and Laura Benanti. Tickets were priced from $250 for rear mezzanine seats to $7,500 for orchestra center front.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is creating a national theater directory designed to increase the number of women, non-binary folks and people of color who work in behind-the-scenes roles.
Set to launch June 8, the Representation, Inclusion, & Support for Employment (Rise) Theatre Directory is meant to serve as a resource for theater producers, directors and other managers across the country and promote the hiring of more underrepresented producers, crew members and theater employees.
The idea was inspired by Ava DuVernay’s Array Crew database, which was created in 2021 to diversify TV and film production crews. Miranda and his family provided seed money for the project and have been closely following its development.
Miranda wanted to do something similar for the theater industry. In writing shows such as In The Heights and Hamilton, Miranda has been able bring more diverse talent on stage, but he wanted to have an impact on the other side of the curtain.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda has a message to the trolls who have targeted their hate at Halle Bailey, star of the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” — watch Brandy in “Cinderella.” “I’m old enough to remember that being a game changer for my generation,” Miranda told me during a Zoom chat from the L’Attitude conference in San Diego, where he was making an appearance with American Express to support Latino small business owners. “And Rob Marshall was the choreographer on that and is now the director of the movie. I’m really thrilled by that symmetry.”
Besides, Miranda thinks the positivity and excitement around the new film far outweigh the negativity. Just take a look at the sneak peek of Bailey singing a snippet of “Part of Your World,” which racked up 104 million global views within days of its debut at the D23 Expo.

A revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford could land on Broadway this Spring, with the team behind Hamilton – producer Jeffrey Seller and director Thomas Kail – attached, according to a published report.
The production – reported exclusively today by Philip Boroff’s Broadway Journal site – would be the latest in a string of Sondheim revivals staged since the Broadway icon’s death on Nov. 21, 2021. Revivals of Company and Into The Woods arrived on Broadway this season, and a new Off Broadway staging of Merrily We Roll Along starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez begins previews at New York Theatre Workshop on Nov. 21, with an official opening on Dec. 12.
Groban, who starred in the 2016 Broadway production of the musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, would play the Sweeney Todd title character, with Ashford, as Mrs. Lovett.
According to Broadway Journal, an operating agreement distributed to investors indicates that producer Seller is attempting to raise 14.5 million for the revival.
Seller was not available for comment Tuesday. Deadline has also reached out to reps for Groban and Ashford.
Sweeney Todd – full title: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – features music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, based on an earlier play of the same name by Christopher Bond. The musical debuted on Broadway in 1979 in a production starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury. It has been revived several times on and Off Broadway.
Groban recorded one of the musical’s most beloved songs, “Not While I’m Around,” in a medley with Into The Woods‘ “Children Will Listen,” on his 2015 album Stages. He also performed the medley during the virtual concert Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration in 2020.
Set in Victorian London, Sweeney Todd tells the penny dreadful tale of a murderous, revenge-seeking barber and his pie-baking accomplice Mrs. Lovett, who uses her culinary skills to dispose of bothersome corpses.

Hamilton will return to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre eight weeks earlier than previously announced, with performances now set to begin on Aug. 17.
Today’s announcement signals the end of what producer Jeffrey Seller and Broadway in Hollywood called the “17-month intermission” that began on the day the production was originally set to start – March 12, 2020. The engagement was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown. (Hamilton had previously played the Pantages in 2017.)
“We are thrilled to welcome back Los Angeles audiences to Hamilton,” said Seller in a statement. “After suspending performances on the eve of our return over a year ago, we are grateful to reassemble our cast, musicians, and crew back to the magnificent, and safe, Hollywood Pantages Theatre.”
The return engagement had, until today, been set to begin in October. “With guidance from the LA County Department of Public Health, our plans are to open at 100% capacity,” said Jeff Loeb,...

In an unusual joint announcement, producers for Broadway powerhouses Hamilton, The Lion King and Wicked said the three shows will resume performances on Tuesday, Sept. 14 – the first day allowed under New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s reopening guidelines announced last week.
Tickets are on sale today. All three shows are housed in Nederlander Organization theaters (see below for details).
The triple announcement was made on ABC’s Good Morning America today by cast members from each production: Alexandra Billings, Madame Morrible from Wicked; Krystal Joy Brown, Eliza from Hamilton; and L. Steven Taylor, Mufasa from The Lion King.
In a press announcement, the producers noted that “this rare alliance between three of Broadway’s fan favorites sends a message that Broadway is united in its commitment to ending a devastating period of hardship for the tens of thousands who make their living directly on Broadway shows and the tens of thousands in dependent industries.

The satire, written by playwright Paul Rudnick and helmed by “Bombshell” director Jay Roach, will premiere on September 12.
The trailer, stuffed with political humor, sees Rae’s character recount an interaction with Ivanka Trump, Midler’s left-leaning persona talk about seeing a Maga hat-wearing man in New York City and Dever’s frontline nurse remember meeting someone who may have had Covid-19 symptoms.
Rudnick and Roach are serving as executive producers on “Coastal Elites,” alongside Jeffrey Seller, Flody Suarez, Scott Chaloff, and Michelle Graham.

What exactly is Disney+’s filmed version of “Hamilton”? Is it akin to a documentary, with a film crew observing the performance in the same way as its live audience? Or is it a narrative film, where the set just happens to be the stage of Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre?
When talking about painstakingly produced, filmed versions of stage productions like this, co-executive producers Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick of RadicalMedia offer some novel terminology: cinematic interpretation.
“Part of what makes something a cinematic interpretation is the planning, the preparation, the attention to detail brought to these, and treating them as a separate work. When we first sat down with Lin[-Manuel Miranda] and Tommy [director Thomas Kail] and Jeffrey Seller, the producer, the first question was understanding their vision for what they wanted to achieve with a filmed version of this incredible piece of art they had made,” Sirulnick, RadicalMedia’s president of entertainment,...

Lin-Manuel Miranda has weighed in on John Bolton’s lift of a Hamilton lyric for use as the title of his memoir The Room Where It Happened.
Since the former national security adviser announced the title last year, Hamilton fans took notice of the reference to the musical’s song “The Room Where It Happens.” Earlier this year, the show’s producer, Jeffrey Seller, told a California newspaper, “I don’t even know how to describe it; it’s just strange.”
Miranda knows how to describe it: By adding a lyric to another Hamilton number, “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story.” The composer tweeted – with the additions in brackets – today:
Let me tell you what I wish I’d known
When I was young and dreamed of glory
You have no control

More than 20 Broadway producers have pledged $1 million in matching funds for the Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Fund of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The producers will match every new donation made by the public up to the million-dollar mark.
With the pledge, fund organizers have set a $2 million goal by April 12.
The emergency assistance fund, administered by The Actors Fund, is designed to help onstage, backstage and behind the scenes workers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and work shutdown. Broadway theaters have been dark since March 12, with plans to reopen – for now, anyway – on April 13 (an extension beyond that opening date is likely).
The matching fund challenge was initiated by Spencer Ross with a $50,000 pledge.
