Twenty years after Trainspotting made him a star – and the poster boy of 90s excess – could Ewan McGregor become Renton again?
Recently, I was in a cinema when the trailer for T2, the new Trainspotting film, was played. The whole room erupted into cheers. Perhaps your excitement is not as delirious. There are many who are dismissing the film before it’s even been screened. But I have a feeling that your anticipation levels are linked to how you spent your 1990s. Trainspotting, the 1996 original, remains the quintessential mid-90s movie. Like Oasis and Blur, like Kate Moss and love doves and Firestarter, it was of its time and captured that time’s cynical yet optimistic, hedonistic heart. Though the story was about heroin addicts, the feel of the film recalled different drugs: uppers, hallucinogens, ecstasy. There were real-unreal trippy sequences about losing pills in a toilet or going cold turkey; uplifting,...

I've seen Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky only once before and I wasn't a big fan. That was 14 years ago now though and I can't remember much of what bothered me about it so to hear the news Warner Home Video is finally releasing it on Blu-ray (preorder it here) has got me a little intrigued to revisit it, not to mention the fact it's coming with an alternate ending, which appears it will actually be added directly to the film rather than just presented as a special feature. amz asin="B00HETGCFM" size="small"The announcement reports the original theatrical cut runs 138 minutes, while the version with the alternate ending runs three minutes longer at 141 minutes. Crowe's official website wrote about the upcoming release back in January and, well, I'm sorry to say they lied just a smidge about that release date push as the new Blu-ray won't arrive...

With his latest film, Trap For Cinderella, out in UK cinemas now, director Iain Softley talks about film locations, Hackers and more...
Iain Softley is a filmmaker who’s hard to categorise. His career is pretty fascinating, because it’s almost impossible to predict what kind of film he’ll make next. His first film was a drama about the early career of the Beatles, which he followed with an unconventional action movie about computer hackers. Then he made a period drama. Then a weird sci-fi movie set in a mental hospital. Then a spooky horror film, and followed it up with a fantasy movie for kids. How many directors can you name who’ve made a series of films that diverse?

Everywhere we go music follows us. We should never overlook music’s role in our lives, and even more so in film. Listen and you’ll learn and experience a great deal more. Sunday Soundtrack takes a look at movies that feature memorable sounds that could be heard on the original soundtrack release or in the film itself.
Sick Boy: “Well, at one time, you’ve got it, and then you lose it, and it’s gone forever. All walks of life: George Best, for example. Had it, lost it. Or David Bowie, or Lou Reed”
Rent-boy: “Some of his solo stuff’s not bad.”
Sick Boy: “No, it’s not bad, but it’s not great either. And in your heart you kind of know that although it sounds all right, it’s actually just shite.”

Leftfield have announced the details of a full UK tour this winter. The dance group reformed this year for a number of festival shows, though founding member Paul Daley did not join his bandmate Neil Barnes on the dates. Barnes will return to the live stage with original vocalists Djum Djum, Earl 16 and Cheshire Cat for what has been billed as "one of the biggest, loudest, and most emotional tours of the year". "The reception we received over the summer at the festivals was amazing," Barnes said. "Now we can't wait (more)...

Paul Daley will not rejoin Leftfield when they make their live return this summer. The musician, half of the duo with bandmate Neil Barnes, will sit out the comeback, which includes a headline slot at this year's Rock Ness event on June 11 to 13 in Scotland. Daley explained: "I'm about to embark on a solo career with the release of my first solo album. I also want to continue concentrating on my DJing work, so I've decided I won't be joining Neil on stage for the Leftfield dates this year. "I want to thank all the fans for their past support and all the people who will be hearing and seeing the band for the (more)...
