Isabelle Huppert in Werner Schroeter's MalinaFresh off the triumph of her Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination for her performance in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle (2016), the French actress Isabelle Huppert is, at 63 and four decades into her career, starting to reap major American award season appreciation. The Golden Globe was a surprise win, but to those who are familiar with her work, it’s well-deserved. Her accumulation of critical acclaim and European awards has garnered her the title of the “French Meryl Streep,” but her career’s variety, international scope and pure nerve outstrip even Streep’s. “Fearless” could be the most commonly used descriptor applied to Huppert, who is known to take on roles that other major actresses won’t go near: insanity, depravity, crime, and other controversial subject matter are Huppert hallmarks. However, it’s not merely the nature of her characters that sets her apart, it...

The future of film criticism in Australia is under a cloud, with the number of full-time salaried critics in the country down to a handful — by some estimates, just two people — in the face of a perfect storm of technological disruption, cratering freelance rates and arts funding cuts.
Coverage of the arts, already a marginal element of the news media, is particularly sensitive to the commercial pressures affecting journalism as a whole.
The last two salaried, fulltime film reviewers standing are believed to be Jason Di Rosso at the ABC and Leigh Paatsch at the Herald Sun, whose writing is syndicated across the News Ltd network.
Local magazine-turned-website FilmInk employs three critics, although they combine the role with other editorial or publishing tasks.
The rest of Australia.s film reviewing comes from a patchwork of freelancers and contributors, who are sometimes paid very little or asked to work for free.

Mel Gibson in Blood Father.
Mel Gibson was in characteristically frank form during a wide-ranging chat at the Sydney Film Festival last week.
During a one-hour conversation with the Oscar winner, the Herald's Garry Maddox noted that Alcoholics Anonymous meetings bookend the actor's new film, the action-thriller.Blood Father.
"Did you have to do some research into that world?", asked Maddox, with more than a little cheek.
"12-step programs? I've researched that anyways," said Gibson. "I had to do that stuff, otherwise you don't survive.".
"They call it the spiritual path of a psychopath. There's only three options: you go insane, you die, or you quit. That's the harsh reality of that stuff. So yeah, I'm an old hand at that.".
Written by.The Town's Peter Craig and.Straight Outta Compton's Andrea Berloff,.Blood Father.is threaded with black humour, a perfect fit for Gibson's sardonic streak.

Mel Gibson.
In conversation last week at the Sydney Film Festival, Mel Gibson spoke at length with Fairfax's Garry Maddox about his upcoming directorial effort Hacksaw Ridge.
Shot in Sydney late last year, Gibson called his fifth directorial outing a "100 percent Aussie film.".
"The crew and most of the cast [were Aussie], it was part-financed here and shot here. Portaying a story that takes place in Lynchburg, Virginia and Okinawa, and they totally pulled it off."
Gibson has just returned from test screenings in Lynchburg (the home town of the film's main character, Desmond Doss) and said the locals "wondered how we got in and shot there without them knowing."
The story of Virginia farmboy Doss (played by Andrew Garfield) landed on Gibson's desk after a long development process, and appealed to the Oscar winner for Braveheart because of Doss's "singular" nature.
"He was the first conscientious objector to be given the Medal of Honor.

Joaquin Phoenix is in the process of reconciling with the Academy Awards, after previously calling the race to win one "bulls--t." Phoenix, who is on the short list for Best Actor thanks to his towering performance in "The Master," told Garry Maddox of The Sydney Morning Herald that he owes a large chunk of his success to the Oscars.
"I wouldn't have the career that I have if it weren't for the Oscars. I haven't been in a lot of movies that have made a lot of money ... and getting nominated for a movie has probably helped my career tremendously," Phoenix said. The star has been singled out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science twice before: In 2000 for his supporting performance in "Gladiator" and 2005 for his lead performance in "Walk the Line."
Phoenix made waves in October when quotes from an interview he gave to Elvis Mitchell for Interview Magazine went viral.

After setting off a firestorm when he dismissed the Oscars as "the stupidest thing in the whole world," Joaquin Phoenix is backtracking big time. -Insertgroups:5- The star of "The Master" was a frontrunner for Best Actor until his all-too revealing chat last month with Elvis Mitchell for Interview magazine. Asked then about his views on the Oscars, the two-time nominee said: "I'm just saying that I think it's bullshit. I think it's total, utter bullshit, and I don't want to be a part of it. I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective." He changed his tune this week, telling Aussie journo Garry Maddox (The Age): "I know that first of all, I wouldn't have the career that I have if it weren't for the Oscars. I haven't...

"The much-loved Australian writer, director and artist Sarah Watt — the wife of the actor William McInnes — has died of cancer," report Garry Maddox and Rebecca Richardson in the Sydney Morning Herald. "Watt, 53, was recognized as a rare talent through a series of heartfelt animated shorts before triumphing with the 2005 film Look Both Ways, which starred McInnes as a photographer dealing with cancer. It won her the best film, director and original screenplay awards at the Australian Film Institute Awards as well as the Discovery award at the Toronto International Film Festival. But by the time of the film's release, she was dealing with her own diagnosis of breast cancer, and she chronicled the experience of illness with humor and heart in her 2009 film My Year without Sex, which starred Sacha Horler and Matt Day."

Curt Flood is not enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame and if you just look at his statistics, that seems reasonable enough. Flood won seven Gold Gloves, which confirms and cements his reputation as one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball history. But Garry Maddox won eight Gold Gloves and didn't receive a single vote when he became HoF eligible, proving that baseball writers either don't respect defense (plausible) or don't respect the value of a Gold Glove (more plausible). Flood led the league in hits once and retired with a career batting average of .293 (very...

Wake in Fright (aka Outback) is widely acknowledged as one of the most important films in the development of modern Australian cinema. Although the film was prominently featured in the documentary Not Quite Hollywood, opportunities to actually see it have been scarce. A new eidtion of Wake in Fright on Region 4 DVD and all-region Blu-Ray from Australian distributor Madman fills in the gap left by a decades-long absence of a quality video release.
A brief background discussion is useful in understanding the importance of this new release. Evan Jones wrote the screenplay based on Kenneth Cook's 1961 novel of the same.
