“We are thrilled to bring the Comedy Fantasy Camp to life,” Carolla said in a statement. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for attendees to learn the ropes from seasoned comedians and writers, and to get an inside look at the comedy industry.

Things aren’t looking great for Fox comedy Welcome To Flatch.
The series, which is a remake of British comedy This Country, was the only live-action series that the network hasn’t made a decision on and it take a while.

It’s been almost three decades since “Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)” — a novelty dance track featuring rapid, part-rapped, part-scatted and mostly nonsensical rhymes — shot to the top of music charts around the world, especially in Europe. Now, the man behind the song is getting the biopic treatment.
John Larkin — better known by his stage name Scatman John — passed away from cancer in 1999 at the age of 57 — just five years after his most famous track was first released. But international production banner Trick Candle Productions has acquired the rights to his life story and is developing Scatman, set to chronicle the musician’s “wild life and positive influence.”
Written by Stephen Basilone (Community, The Goldbergs) and Annie Mebane (The Goldbergs, Shrinking), the film — which will include unparalleled access to the entire Scatman music library, as well as private home videos — will detail Larkin’s struggles with being a lifelong stutterer, bullying, abuse at home,...

Exclusive: Rock and roll fantasy camp could be heading to the small screen.
Fox is developing single-camera comedy Rock Camp from The Goldbergs co-exec producer Steve Basilone, Jeff Rowe and David Fishof, founder of Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp.
The project follows a down on his luck rock star, who after a series of screw-ups, begrudgingly goes to teach at Rock Camp — a summer camp where anyone can live out their fantasy of shredding next to their favorite rockers — in order to satisfy a court mandate and save his reputation.
Basilone, who has also written on Community and The Michael J. Fox Show, will write and will exec produce alongside Rowe, and Fishof.
Fishof started Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp after having worked with Ringo Starr, Roger Daltrey, The Monkees, Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton. He launched it in 1997 and has put more than 6,000 folks through their rock star dreams.

Another week, another step toward the world as we knew it before Covid-19, thanks to nationwide vaccination efforts and the gradual reopening of theaters. A week after New York cinemas cautiously reopened, Los Angeles plans to do the same, and distributors are serving up movies they’d kept on the sidelines to serve the venues that have suffered so greatly this past year — although after last week’s deluge, this one brings a pretty meager menu of new releases.
Perhaps most tantalizing is Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Human Voice,” starring Tilda Swinton. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the 30-minute short film, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival (one of 2020’s few in-person events), in just a handful of theaters, along with a fresh restoration of the Spanish master’s “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.” That means audiences can come just for a short, social-distanced experience (ducking...

"Are you... real?!" "You don't know everything about me..." Sony Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a romantic comedy called Long Weekend, marking the directorial debut of the producer / writer Stephen Basilone. The basic logline synopsis for this doesn't say much: a down-on-his-luck struggling writer, meets an enigmatic woman who enters his life at the right time. The trailer reveals a bit more - everything takes place around a meteor shower, and both of them seem to be hiding some secrets. But there's a hint in this trailer that makes me wonder if this is an update on Ruby Sparks, and he "imagined" this perfect woman? We'll see. Finn Wittrock and Zoe Chao co-star, with Wendi McLendon-Covey, Damon Wayans Jr., Jim Rash, and Casey Wilson. It doesn't look so bad, might be worth a watch after all. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Stephen Basilone's Long Weekend,...

Jon M. Chu, the director of the Step Up films and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, is set to develop a new movie project called Can’t Touch This. As most of you know, that is the name of a popular song written by M.C. Hammer. The film is a high school dance comedy that will be set in the 1990s. Having grown up as a teenager in the '90s, the thought of a dance movie called Can’t Touch This made me laugh. I’m glad to hear that it’s going to be a comedy because hard to imagine a movie with a title like that could be taken seriously, unless they tackle it like films such as Dazed and Confused or American Graffiti. Those both had a good balance of drama and comedy.

Director Jon M. Chu has already helped successfully usher the Step Up films into the realm of true franchise greatness — the filmmaker directed both Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D, ensuring a long life for the world’s most beloved dance franchise and don’t you dare argue that point with me — and now he looks to be turning his attention to a generation desperate for still more popping and locking. Deadline reports that Chu is now producing Can’t Touch This, a new dance feature that is billed as “a high school dance comedy set in the golden era of the 1990s.” Although the film’s specific storyline has not yet be revealed, it seems safe to assume that the dulcet tones of M.C. Hammer will prove to be a large part of the feature’s plot and/or soundtrack. If nothing else, we can surely expect to see a bevy of parachute...

Morelli and Basilone filed for divorce jointly and split amicably, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. Morelli came out as gay via a touching essay for Identities.Mic in May 2014. She explained that writing about protagonist Piper Chapman's (Taylor Schilling) relationship with ex-girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) helped her to accept her own sexual orientation just months after marrying Basilone. "I was nervous about the first love scene I'd written for Alex and Piper. I loved writing it,...

Source: Instagram user lomorelli It turns out that the most interesting love connections on Orange Is the New Black are happening behind the scenes. Lauren Morelli, a writer for the hit Netflix show, has filed for divorce from her husband of two years, Steve Basilone, and is now dating actress Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey Washington on the show. Lauren came out as a lesbian back in May when she penned an essay for Identities.Mic to talk about how working on the show helped her come to terms with her sexual identity. She wrote: "I realized I was gay in fall 2012, one of my first days on the set. It wasn't so much one thing, but the sum of many small details: how uncomfortable I felt around groups of lesbians or how I considered myself (shrug) a 'not very sexual person.' When considered alone, these seemed like little quirks that made me me.

It's safe to say that working on Orange Is the New Black has changed the lives of the entire cast and crew. But perhaps one person on the show has been more affected than the rest. Lauren Morelli, who writes for Orange, has filed for divorce from The Goldbergs producer Steve Basilone, her husband of two years. She is now dating Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey on the show. TMZ first reported that the divorce paperwork had been filed. Morelli came out as gay in an essay on Identities.Mic in May, explaining that writing love scenes for lesbian characters helped her come

It turns out gay storylines can make you gay (sort of). Orange is the New Black writer Lauren Morelli (no, not Morello) and her husband of two years, Steve Basilone, jointly filed for divorce after Morelli realized that she was a lesbian. TMZ reports that Morelli had that realization as she was writing about Piper's own relationship with Alex in prison, saying, "I found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like." And who is she dating for her first relationship as a out and proud lesbian? The impossibly gorgeous Samira Wiley who plays Poussey on the show. Translation: Sorry ladies, they're both off the market. Those who follow Morelli on Twitter have of course known about this for a while: And here she is with her boo thang at on the Orange Emmy party bus:...

One on of the head writers for "Orange is the New Black" has filed for divorce ... the logical step since she's now realized she's a lesbian and is dating one of the female stars.Lauren Morelli just filed divorce docs -- obtained by TMZ -- from her husband of 2 years, Steve Basilone. It's actually a joint petition ... probably because Steve realizes that ship has sailed. The story is amazing. Lauren began writing for Oitnb 5 months after she got hitched.

Community, Season 4, Episode 12: “Heroic Origins”
Written by Steve Basilone & Annie Mebane & Maggie Bandur
Directed by Victor Nelli, Jr.
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Let’s tell the origin story of this Community review. In the cold open, when Britta compared their interlocking origins to “the classic French film trilogy Bleu, Blanc, Rouge,” and Abed responds with “No. Like something more accessible, like Unbreakable,” I wrote it down in my notes. This would be the key to this week’s review, and a perfect metaphor for the season. A show that once aspired for meaning through art reduced to something that is fun but ultimately facile. Then I woke up this morning and realized Todd VanDerWerff, using the “movies” vs. “cinema” dichotomy established in Steven Soderbergh’s “State of the Cinema” address as a framework, beat me to the punch.

Community, Season 4, Episode 5: “Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations”
Written by Steve Basilone & Annie Mebane
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Reviewing comedy can be a difficult proposition at times as so often it comes down to your own personal sense of humor. You can attempt to focus on story-structure, performances, characters, theme, and, if the show is deep enough to warrant such analysis, that’s usually sufficient. However, when reflecting back on “Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations” from the team of Steve Basilone & Annie Mebane who delivered Season Three’s superlative “Introduction to Finality” as well as the relatively abysmal “Regional Holiday Music,” the problem is often that it just isn’t funny, and as far as that goes, your mileage may vary.
Which isn’t to suggest it’s perfect on all those other fronts. The group’s desire to escape Shirley’s...

When you want to know something about a TV show, ask the writers. They know everything. This was certainly the case on Saturday (Feb. 9) when five "Community" writers spoke a CommuniCon, a fan convention for the program.
Chris McKenna, Megan Ganz, Andy Bobrow, Steve Basilone and Tim Saccardo had plenty to share on what's coming in Season 4, the show's issues with former star Chevy Chase, and even on "Community" ideas so bizarre they never got made.
Here are some of the highlights:
Whatever you may think of "Community" as it goes into Season 4 without creator Dan Harmon at the helm, the writers have been very, very worried about it. "We're breaking the show" was apparently the feeling in the writers room before every script.
Seriously, they're worried about fan reactions. "Before you watch Season 4, watch all of your least-favorite episodes of Season 3," Megan Ganz advised.

To quote former Community co-showrunner Neil Goldman, “This is the Emmyiest timeline.”
Chris McKenna, a departing co-exec producer on the NBC sitcom and head scribe on Season 3′s standout time-jumper, “Remedial Chaos Theory” – an episode he calls a “labor of love” — was treated on Thursday to an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Here, McKenna talks to TVLine exclusively about the methods behind “Chaos’” Emmy-nominated madness, out-going showrunner Dan Harmon‘s indelible mark on the timeline-driven installment and more. He also opens up about his new gig on what might be fall’s most anticipated new comedy,...

Community, Season 3, Episode 20, “Digital Estate Planning”
Written by Matt Warburton
Directed by Adam Davidson
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
“Digital Estate Planning” functions as something of a breather from the four-part “Evil Chang” plotline that closes out the season. At the same time it serves to bring closure to Pierce’s arc, dealing with the aftermath of his father’s death in “Advanced Gay.” Giancarlo Esposito is clever casting as Pierce’s half-brother Gilbert, and his legacy as Gus Fring lends weight to his machinations in the first two-thirds of the episode. A legacy the show’s writers are clearly aware of given how frequently his avatar adjusts his glasses.
The video game conceit may seem gratuitous at first but the quest it sends the group on gives them a reason to work together and show Pierce the true meaning of friendship. It’s likely this display of...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

The Weinstein Co. has won the contest for Dirty Step Stomp, a spec script by Steve Basilone and Annie Mebane that spoofs dance movies. Chris Bender, Mason Novick, JC Spink will serve as producers.
The movie will spoof such recent films as Stomp the Yard, Step Up and Save the Last Dance as well as the 1980s classics Footloose and Dirty Dancing.
The idea of the movie originated in one of Benderspink's weekly idea meetings, where everyone from the company is encouraged to come forward with ideas and opinions pertaining to articles, books, specs, pitches and the like. A month ago, TV coordinator Amber DeFrancis threw out the idea of a dance spoof movie, noting that the genre was ripe for a takedown. Andrew Mallett, the assistant to Benderspink partner Jill McElroy, suggested that a couple of his writer friends could pen the spec. Over the next couple of weeks, DeFrancis and Mallett and writers Basilone and Mebane developed the script under Novick's guidance.
