For more than three decades, filmmaker Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral) has crafted his signature voice in the world of movies and television, giving audiences unforgettable characters who have alternately allowed us to laugh at our ever-so-human foibles and to share a tear at the extraordinary journeys that accompany our ordinary lives.
Now, with About Time, Curtis gives us his most personal film to date.
At the age of 21, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers he can travel in time…
The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim’s father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can’t change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life—so he decides to make his world a better place…by getting a girlfriend. Sadly, that...

American musician known for his performance at Woodstock who put a soulful, fiery twist on folk songs and covers
Richie Havens, who has died of a heart attack aged 72, is best known for his opening performance at the historic 1969 Woodstock festival. He had been scheduled to go on fifth, but major traffic snarl-ups delayed many of the performers, so he was put on first and told to perform a lengthy set.
He entranced the audience for three hours, being called back time and again for encores. With his repertoire exhausted, he improvised a song based on the spiritual Motherless Child. This became Freedom, his best known song and an anthem for a generation. His inclusion on the subsequent film of the festival – where he can be seen strutting around the stage, pouring every ounce of emotion into the song – further enhanced his reputation. London - The Creamfields dance music festival, one of the big British summer music events, ended a day early as organizers cancelled Sunday's planned closing day performances amid heavy overnight rain that caused flooding. Deadmau5, Tiesto, Richie Hawtin, Paul van Dyk, James Zabiela, Hernan Cattaneo and Groove Armada were among the big electronic music acts scheduled to play at the festival on Sunday. Organizers call the event "the world's leading dance music festival." The festival said on its web site Sunday morning that the event location in Daresbury in Cheshire, England had been closed. The final day of Creamfields has been cancelled, organisers have announced. The dance music festival's site at Daresbury in Cheshire has been closed after torrential rain caused "heavy flooding".
Deadmau5, Tiesto and Groove Armada were due to play the event's last day. Day ticket holders have been warned not to travel to the sold-out festival, while those already camping there have apparently been told to leave the site. "No serious casualties have been reported and Cheshire Police and partner agencies are supporting event organisers in ensuring the safety and welfare of festival goers during this time," a statement read.

This year's Lovebox celebrated a "decade of love", where in such time it has grown to become one of the UK's leading boutique festivals. Its history boasts headliners including Blondie, Norman Jay and The Flaming Lips, as well as founders Groove Armada, and after a disappointing showing of big names last year, the event promised to up its game for the occasion. The notoriously under-attended Friday was easily fixed with a headline slot from Hot Chip, who with an impressive back catalogue, a new album to push and England's victory against Sweden still fresh, found no trouble in getting the crowd pumped with their own brand of intelligent electro. Meanwhile, Skream closed proceedings minutes later with a chest-juddering set on the Big Top Stage. Saturday's Lovebox featured a far more impressive bill, bringing festival goers in their thousands. Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?
My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.
When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.
Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.
John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me,...

It’s not often that the power of an idea and the way it’s presented manages to blast its way past all my cynicism and take root in the scorched wasteland of what passes for my soul after over a decade of working in marketing.
Everyone who returned from SxSW was raving about it. Ben Cooper wrote a post about it. And the presentation by Rg/A North America’s chief creative officer Nick Law at Circus – about Nike+ FuelBand – excited me to the point that I was scribbling down his every word, and more importantly, the pleasure centres in my brain were screaming Want at the sight of the Fuelband’s sleek lines and elegant rubber curves.
I’m going to go out on a limb to say this is the most sophisticated piece of mindfuckery of the 21st century.

The first time I played Sce London Studio’s Playstation Move dance offering, DanceStar Party, I was alone. In the privacy of my front room, with the blinds closed, and only the whirring of the Playstation’s fans to keep me company. And I hated it. “You just shake the controllers around a bit” I thought. “This isn’t a proper dance game” I thought. After twenty minutes I ejected the disk and tossed it aside. I decided I’d come back to it later for a cursory glance, then give it a poor review and move on.
And then over Christmas, and in the new year, I’ve had the opportunity to take the game to a fairer setting. When a game is called DanceStar Party, you should probably give it a try on its own terms before slating it, right? It’s a good job I did. In...

The last, and undoubtedly most diverse, British festival of the summer is Bestival. Created by DJ and producer Rob da Bank in 2004, this carnival of colour and excitement continues to grow from a small boutique of choice music picks into a full scale alternate reality.
A four day phantasmagoria situated on the Isle of Wight, Bestival is typified by world class music acts such as this year’s headliners ‘The Cure’, ‘Primal Scream’ and ‘Björk’; all the while wrapped in a warm electric bubble of vibrancy that is bigger than the music itself.
The inflatable church, erected to let you marry a beautiful stranger; the poky ‘polka’ dance tent; an all day roller disco; transcendental meditation in the ambient forest; the freestyle skating ramp; the Wi tent; Shisha by Bollywood, Club Tropicana; The ‘Wishing Tree’ club in enclosed in bark and then so, so much more .The reason Bestival continues...

Electronic dance music duo Groove Armada are planning to retire from live performances after their upcoming U.K. tour. Tom Findlay and Andy Cato formed the acclaimed act in the mid-1990s and they became a popular European festival draw - but the pair is quitting life on the road following their trek next month.
A statement from the duo reads, "We've crossed and re-crossed the world with this band and crew. There's no other team like it. With their help, Ga live became the sound of legendary nights from Mount Fuji to Moscow.
"It's not often in the spotlight maybe; but ask the people who have come and filled the tents and surrounded the stages for the last decade. A massive thanks to all of them, for staying with us." The duo's farewell tour kicks off in Leeds, England on October 7.

In the wake of 80's week, I found myself contemplating the state of the modern teen comedy. After the end of John Hughes' stellar track record of teen-themed films, we haven't had much to take their place. Sure, we had Can't Hardly Wait and American Pie, Clueless and Ten Things I Hate About You, but it feels like the genre is still strangely empty. And then I remembered 2004's The Girl Next Door. It's not your conventional high school movie -- it's filled with gratuitous nudity, copious swearing, drug use, and all kinds of other fun stuff. It's one of those films that I feel oddly guilty about liking... no. Fuck that. I love this flick. I can't help myself.
The Girl Next Door is a simple boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl story, with a couple of twists thrown in. Taking place during the final days of high school, Matthew (Emile Hirsch...

With dark sunshine exploding from its core, it’s what people wearing frockcoats — or their equivalent in the summer heat — would call an end-of-the-century album. Put the disc on and it could be 1899, 1999 or 2099, swivelling years, stashed with all the fin-de-siecle feelings of stylised and stylish grief and arsenic-laced joy. Here's a new trailer for Public Enemies with Christian Bale and Johnny Depp or Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. We ranked this as our pre-season number two film of the summer, not too far behind Terminator Salvation. Though not really typical summer fare, it could be the best movie we see in the next few months.
This is the international trailer, and I'm really only showing it for one reason: Check out the music. I don't know if director Michael Mann will use anachronistic tunes in the film as opposed to period music from the 1930s, but his films, like those of Martin Scorsese, are usually expertly soundtracked. That's not a word. But he always finds a way to match the mood with music, like the integration of Groove Armada's "Hands of Time" and Audioslave's "Shadow on the Sun" in Collateral.
So I'll be curious to see what...
