Bill Maher is expanding his Club Random podcast into a network, with plans to launch a new show with sports journalist Sage Steele.
Maher, host of HBO’s Real Time, is teaming with his co-creators and executive producer Chris Case and Chuck Labella in the venture, with plans to feature celebrity talent who want to “try something different and span a wide variety of personalities and interests,” according to an announcement.
Club Random Studios, as the venture is named, will debut The Sage Steele Show later today. In a statement, Maher said that the former ESPN anchor is “the perfect choice to be our first new host because, like me, she pissed off Disney. There’s a certain poetic symmetry to that.”
Maher said, “My lifelong goal has been to get the kind of conversation we have in life – utterly real, completely authentic, cleaned up for no one – on the air.

New Delhi, June 29 (Ians) Recent internet shutdowns in Manipur and Punjab cost the Indian economy an estimated $1.9 billion, a loss of nearly $118 million in foreign investment and nearly 21,268 job losses, a report showed on Thursday.
India’s regular use of internet shutdowns as a tool to maintain public order gives India a shutdown risk of 16 per cent so far this year, one of the highest in the world as of 2023, according to the NetLoss calculator, a new tool by non-profit organisation The Internet Society.
Hosted on the Internet Society’s Pulse Platform, the tool measures the economic impact of Internet shutdowns around the world.
Internet shutdowns globally reached a record high in 2022, with governments around the world ordering Internet access and services to be restricted or blocked during civil unrest, school exams, and during elections, which resulted in major economic consequences.

On Friday’s “Real Time,” Bill Maher had plenty of jokes about Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, who died Thursday at 96. And in addition to those (pretty funny) jokes, he also wondered if her death means the end of the deferential reverence British citizens have for her.
“You all know the big story. Sad day for inbreeding,” Maher joked as he pretended to bow his head in a show of respect. “Queen Elizabeth died at 96, they say the cause of death was Meghan Markle’s podcast.”
“I like the queen, I do. Her personal estate they say was almost half a billion dollars, used to be worth a billion. That’s what you get for listening to Matt Damon,” Maher continued, referring to Damon’s hilariously ill-timed Super Bowl ads for cryptocurrency brokers.
“The White House is saying for a long time they didn’t know if Biden...

Laura Ingraham attacked Jon Stewart on Monday night’s “The Angle,” calling him a “sneering prig” for his views on racial equality in the U.S. and accusing him of stacking his panel of guests to team up on author Andrew Sullivan.
“The only thing funny about Jon Stewart these days is how blissfully self-unaware he is,” she said.
Ingraham took issue with a recent segment on Stewart’s show “The Problem with Jon Stewart” titled, “The Problem With White People.” In it, Stewart and his panel spoke to Sullivan, who disagreed with the premise that all white people are responsible for systemic racism, and argued that America has “a great history.”
“By calling today a white supremacy, you are minimizing actual white supremacy,” Sullivan argued.
In response, one of Stewart’s panelists said she refused to argue “with another white man” and said “Every single white person upholds the...

Jon Stewart is firing back at conservative political commentator Andrew Sullivan’s claims that he was “ambushed” by the comedian on Apple TV+’s “The Problem with Jon Stewart” last week.
In a lengthy Substack post on Friday, Sullivan accused Stewart and the other guests on the show of “unprofessionally” making him appear racist during their conversation, which he chalked up to them pushing “woke” narratives.
However, Stewart wasn’t having it. He swiftly issued a response on Twitter, writing: “Nonsense @sullydish. Our booker handled this last minute ask impeccably. Mr Sullivan was told, texted and emailed a detailed account of who was on the program, the content and intent of the discussion.”
“She patiently handled his high maintenance shenanigans and gave him every opportunity to excuse himself,” he wrote in a follow up tweet. “This man wasn’t ambushed. Any damage incurred was self inflicted.”

When Michael Moore was in parochial school he started a newspaper dedicated to covering the comings-and-goings of his teachers and classmates. Initially, the nuns thought it was cute. Their attitude changed, however, after he share his iconoclastic take on a sacred topic.
“I wrote a critical article about the eighth grade football team and that was the end of it,” remembers Moore. “They shut it down.”
So began a long oppositional history, one that saw Moore clashing with the powers that be over his movies, books and journalism. In 2001, for instance, HarperCollins initially refused to release Moore’s book “Stupid White Men” because the News Corp.-owned publisher believed its blistering criticism of President George W. Bush would be seen as tone deaf in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. In 2003, Moore’s documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11” was caught up in a struggle between Miramax and its parent company Disney over whether...

Now he will oversee all of Simon & Schuster’s domestic and international publishing operations.
ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish called Karp “a key member of the leadership team that consistently delivered strong results” for the nearly century-old Simon & Schuster, “while expanding its readership across genres and formats. Lifetime has announced that Drop Dead Diva will end with the upcoming sixth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. I just hope another show quickly steps in to fill the upcoming Brooke Elliott shortage on TV.
Dave Holmes sings the praises of Brit soap Coronation Street, though a lot of his praise highlights the ways UK soaps trump their U.S. counterparts.
EW reports that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is set to appear on Shameless as Fiona‘s new boss. Judging from Morgan’s roles on Weeds, Supernatural and Watchmen, I’m already starting a deathwatch for his character.
Seth Meyers promises that Stefon will eventually appear on Late Night, saying that Bill Hader wants to bring his Saturday Night Live character to Meyer’s show eventually.

On the surface, YouTube user Moto2h has used simple sound editing techniques to transform something we’ve all heard way too many times, but the experience of watching “Gangnam Style” without the music is completely uneasy. It’s a sonic cousin of “Garfield Minus Garfield,” and I’m pretty sure it creates the kind of existential crisis that Kafka would tear his hair out about. Admittedly, it’s hard to explain why. Maybe it’s a case of the familiar being made alien, but it seems more likely that this video crawls up into the range of experimental genius by exposing the grand absurdity not only of this single music video, but...

Andrew Sullivan, the gay conservative writer who helms The Daily Beast's 'The Dish' blog, went on The Colbert Report last night to make a conservative case for Obama. Sullivan, who backed George W. Bush in 2000, was a early supporter of Barack Obama's in 2008. Speaking with Stephen Colbert, Sullivan said that reelecting Obama was "the most important thing" to rid America's political climate of the "ailment" of partisan ideology, which he sees manifested most clearly in the Republicans' lockstep opposition to President Obama since his inauguration in 2009. Sullivan told Obama he supports Obama even more in 2012 than in 2008, since the Republicans have gotten, in his own words, "nuttier" since then. Sullivan also made the contentious argument that it was Obama, and not the Republicans, who would actually reduce the nation's debt in the coming years. Romney and Ryan, he said, have already shown the...

Ben Maisani, Cooper’s boyfriend of several years, has whipped the media into a frenzy after being photographed kissing a dark-haired man in a New York park. The pictures show Maisani intimately locking lips with a man who is clearly not the silver-haired news anchor.

Cooper and Maisani, who owns a gay bar in the East Village of Manhattan, have reportedly been dating for three years – and rumors were swirling that Cooper wanted to marry Maisani as soon as Labor Day. It has also been reported that the couple live together in Cooper’s converted firehouse apartment.
Cooper publicly came out in July, in an open letter to longtime friend Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast.

Ex-porn queen Jenna Jameson gave her endorsement to Gop presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday, explaining plainly: "When you're rich, you want a Republican in office."
Her move made waves across the web, drawing a number of sharp comments from readers. This one, from a reader of Andrew Sullivan's Daily Beast blog, caught our eye in particular, so we decided to do a little photoshopping and pair the adult film star with her candidate and a great quote.

Anderson Cooper caught everyone by surprise when he revealed he was gay on July 2 in an email to Andrew Sullivan that was shared with the public. But behind the scenes, months of conversations went into planning how, where and when the TV anchor would come out.
"They wanted this to seem like it was a spur of moment decision where he said he ultimately decided to come out because he was doing more harm than good," one insider told me. "That might be true, but before he came out he had a long discussion with his team making sure he wasn’t committing career suicide."
Cooper avoided follow-up questions by making the announcement in a carefully crafted email while in Botswana, where he could not be tracked down by the press.

1. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorcing
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage.
"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," says Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
Cruise's rep says in a statement: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."
Cruise and Holmes, who have a 16-year age difference, have one daughter together, Suri, 6.
The couple married in an Italian castle in 2006, after a whirlwind romance that made headlines from the start. Perhaps the most infamous incident? Cruise's 2005 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, in which he ecstatically professed his love for Holmes while jumping on a couch.
There was also no hint of marital trouble in Cruise's recent interview with Playboy, where...

This week is shaping up to be a big one for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Not only did Anderson Cooper come out in an incredibly nonchalant manner via an email to Andrew Sullivan on Monday, but Frank Ocean, an R&B singer who is part of the hip hop collective Odd Future and who has also written songs for Justin Bieber, John Legend and Beyoncé, came out on his blog last night.
Ocean writes in part:
In the last year or 3 I've screamed at my creator, screamed at the clouds in the sky, for some explanation. Mercy maybe. For peace of mind to rain like manna somehow.
4 summer ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost… Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant.

Ellen DeGeneres and Kathy Griffin have praised Anderson Cooper for coming out as gay. The CNN journalist ended years of speculation about his sexuality on Monday (July 2) when he acknowledged that he is gay in an open letter to The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan. Cooper wrote: "I've begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle... The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud." DeGeneres has led a variety of celebrities in praising Cooper for taking a public stance in favour of the Lgbt community. "I'm proud of you, AndersonCooper," (more)...

In response to Anderson Cooper's announcement that he is gay, Kathy Griffin wrote in the Daily Beast that while she is proud of her friend, she thinks he needs to be careful.
Cooper and Griffin are close friends who appear on one another shows, and co-host CNN's live coverage of New Years Eve. Cooper has complained that Griffin is a terrible house guest. Griffin has joked about the many ways she would like to humiliate Cooper on air. In her piece for the Daily Beast, Griffin also wrote that she was often asked about Cooper's sexuality by the press.
For years, Cooper did not publicly address his sexuality, but finally came out in an interview with Daily Beast writer Andrew Sullivan on Monday. "It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken...

Anderson Cooper responded on Tuesday to the outpouring of attention that followed his coming out on Monday.
Cooper's reaction was, typically for him, understated and brief -- just as his announcement that he was gay had been. He came out in a relatively under-the-radar manner, penning an email to friend and blogger Andrew Sullivan.
"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," he wrote.
Cooper's name immediately began trending on Twitter, as seemingly everybody weighed in. The reaction appeared to be overwhelmingly positive, as people congratulated him for taking the step.
Throughout Monday, CNN said that Cooper was away on assignment and would likely not make any extended comment beyond his email. On Tuesday, though, Cooper sent a single tweet to his followers:...

Within hours of Anderson Cooper coming out, stars and media figures offered their support and congratulations to the CNN anchor and daytime talk show host. "I'm proud of you, @AndersonCooper," Ellen DeGeneres, who came out years ago, wrote on Twitter. Neil Patrick Harris also gave the newsman his good wishes, writing, "Good for you, @AndersonCooper. You're awesome." Both messages have been re-tweeted almost 5,000 times. And though he's away, Cooper, 45, is getting the message loud and clear. Anderson Cooper, the host of CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" and the daytime talk show "Anderson," told the world on Monday that he is gay.
In an email sent to The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan and published with Cooper's permission, the CNN star wrote, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."
There has long been speculation about Cooper's sexuality, with some in the press having claimed he has been romantically linked to Ben Maisani, an owner of several gay clubs.
But the 45-year-old anchor has been notoriously private about his sexuality. As he notes in his letter to Sullivan, he didn't discuss his sexuality in his 2006 memoir, "Dispatches From the Edge," and when Jonathan Van Meter brought it up during a 2005 profile for New York magazine Cooper said, "...I understand why people might be interested.

In an e-mail to friend and fellow journalist Andrew Sullivan, CNN's Anderson Cooper not only admits he's gay, but gives Sullivan his permission to share the revelation with the rest of the world. Which Sullivan did Monday (July 2) in a column for The Daily Beast.
"I've always believed that who a reporter votes for, what religion they are, who they love, should not be something they have to discuss publicly," Cooper writes. "As long as a journalist shows fairness and honesty in his or her work, their private life shouldn't matter."
He continues:
"It's become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true. ...

Anderson Cooper has, at long last, publicly said he is gay.
Cooper made the announcement in an email to writer Andrew Sullivan.
"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," he wrote.
Cooper's sexuality has long been the subject of ample media speculation, but he has never publicly confirmed it -- a fact which he also seemed to address in the email to Sullivan:
"I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist."

Anderson Cooper confirmed what most have suspected — that the CNN news anchor is gay. For years Cooper dodged questions about his sexuality. Cooper came out in a letter to friend Andrew Sullivan, a writer for The Daily Beast.
The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.
Earlier this year, Cooper was ranked number six in Out Magazine's Power List, despite not publicly acknowledging his sexual orientation. As The Wrap points out, Cooper's announcement makes him the only openly gay news anchor on television.

Anderson Cooper would rather cover the news, not be the news. But in this case, he's making headlines to put this question to bed once and for all.
