True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

Brought to life beautifully through motion capture and incredibly polished CGI, The Last of Us Part II is one of the most visually impressive and best-acted games on the PlayStation 4. Some of our greatest detectives have been children, from Encyclopedia Brown to Nancy Drew. Okay, those ones are fictional but they no doubt set the stage for Dana Fox and Dara Resnik’s new series, “Home Before Dark.” Based on the life of real child journalist Hilde Lysiak, the new series for Apple TV+ is equal parts biopic, old-school mystery, and classic children’s programming that will easily draw comparisons to the likes of “Ghostwriter” and “Eerie Indiana.”
“Florida Project” star Brooklynn Prince plays the series’ take on Hilde, changing her last name to Lisko for reasons that don’t feel clear. Her father, Matt (Jim Sturgess) is a former investigative journalist in New York who, after losing his job, uproots the family from Brooklyn and moves them to his hometown of Erie Harbor. Kids have been solving crimes in movies, books and TV shows for a long time, from Nancy Drew, Harriet The Spy and The Secret Seven to Lindsay Lohan vehicle Get A Clue. The major difference with Apple TV+’s 10-part new crime drama series Home Before Dark, is that our 9-year-old roving reporter, Hilde Lisko, who gets embroiled in solving a kidnapping and murder case, is based on an actual 9-year-old – Hilde Lysiak – who really did report on crime at such a young age.
What results is a slightly uncomfortable genre mix of kid-centric wish fulfillment and crime drama about a child-killer, complete with the dark color palette of a grown up murder series. Jon M. Chu who made the excellent Crazy Rich Asians directs the opening episode setting the tone somewhere between Press Gang and All The President’s Men (which young...

From creators Dara Resnik and Dana Fox, and directed in part by Jon M. Chu, Apple TV Plus’ earnest series further mythologizes the compelling true story of Hilde Lysiak, a young reporter who broke a local murder case when she was 9 years old.
In “Home Before Dark,” Hilde (played by “The Florida Project” breakout Brooklynn Prince) isn’t just investigating a murder, but digging into a long-dormant kidnapping case that’s haunted her jaded father, Matt (Jim Sturgess), since he was a child witnessing it firsthand. In terms of what Apple TV Plus already offers just a few months after launch, “Home Before Dark” (quite by accident) feels like a feel-good mashup of “Truth Be Told,” Nichelle Tramble’s scripted take on the true crime investigative podcast phenomenon, and Apple’s gung-ho update of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 whodunit series “Amazing Stories.” And if that combination sounds a bit confusing … well,...

By the end of the “The Masked “Singer” episode on March 25, half of the 18 contestants will have been sent home with three apiece coming from Groups A, B and C. The remaining four contenders from Group C — Astronaut, Night Angel, Rhino and T-Rex — competed in this ninth episode, which aired Wednesday. One of them will be eliminated at the end of the show while the other three will continue on in the competition in the coming weeks.
Of this quartet, the biggest surprise has been the one hidden inside the T-Rex costume. She first appeared on March 11, and wowed the crowd with her energetic cover of “So What” by P!nk. Last week, she made the most of “Push It” by Salt-n-Pepa.
Keep reading as we’ve got “The Masked Singer” spoilers for all four of these contestants, including our best guess as to the real identity of the T-Rex.

Fox has the #1 show of 2020,”The Masked Singer.” The key to its success is the format. In each installment, Nick Cannon introduces celebrities who sing songs while completely clad in elaborate costumes. At the end of an episode, the contestant with the fewest votes from the studio audience is unmasked and sent home.
That has been the fate of six of the dozen contestants that we’ve seen so far on season 3. Episode 7, which airs on March 11, see the last group of celebrities take to the stage for the first time. They are disguised as the Astronaut, Bear, Night Angel, Rhino, Swan and T-Rex.
A huge part of the appeal of “The Masked Singer” is trying to guess which famous faces are hidden behind these masks. Keep reading for “The Masked Singer” spoilers including the real name of the Bear.

Across three days, 26 short genre movies will be screened, including 12 from the UK. Den Of Geek alumnus James Moran’s Blood Shed, starring Shaun Dooley, Sally Phillips and a garden shed, is screening. As is Katie Bonham’s Mab, Sean Healy’s Judgement and Stefano Nurro’s Hum.
The full line up is at the bottom of this post. Meanwhile, if you’re after tickets, Horror Channel FrightFest runs from 24th to the 28th of August in London. You can buy single tickets and passes here: http://www.frightfest.co.uk/tickets.

Premiering at FrightFest in London on the 28th August, Teddy Bears Picnic is a proof of concept horror short from Tom Hodge – aka The Dude Designs – the poster artist behind artwork for films such Hobo with A Shotgun (2011), The Innkeepers (2011), The Heat (2013), WolfCop (2014), The Other Side of The Door (2016), and They Live.
Written, produced, directed and financed by Hodge, the short film stars Abby Miller (Justified, Aquarius & The Sinner TV series), Laurence R Harvey (Human Centipede 2+3, ABCs of Death 2 & The Editor) and Lorelei Winterfrost; and is inspired by the classic 1907 melody of the same name… only this time re-envisioned as a nightmarish fable that twists the concept of childhood innocence!
Says Hodge:
I love horror as a genre for its pure unabashed creativity. It gives you a wider scope to create unique characters and settings. What are nightmares if not essentially creative? I particularly loved the creativity of high...

The explosives have begun to go off in the “Year of the Crowes” FX’s Justified with just two episodes left. Art Mullen’s (Nick Searcy) been shot and his deputies need to step up while he lies on a hospital bed in critical condition. Raylan Given’s (Timothy Olyphant) struggle with the Crowe family reached the point of no return, as has the partnership between Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) and Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns). Oh and Ava (Joelle Carter) has just asserted herself as an alpha in the prison system and builds her own criminal rep. Five years in, Justified continues to help lead the pack of superb television and as always there are plenty of cogs in motion, and we’ve got Executive Producer/Showrunner Graham Yost on board to talk about this current and next year’s final season, how their writer’s room is unique, and...

Last week, Felicia Day's YouTube channel Geek & Sundry debuted their latest live-action scripted show, Caper. Created by Amy Berg (Leverage, Eureka) and Mike Sizemore (Slingers), it concerns a team of impoverished superheroes who reluctantly turn to a life of crime, only to quickly find that it's a big mistake...
Based on the first two episodes of the show's nine-episode first season, here's why you should be watching, and how it comments on the superhero genre and tells its own story within it.
First off, it's fun. The series is directed in a fittingly comic book style, and even capers gleefully into motion comic-style animation for the action sequences; presumably not only to save on budget (superpowers can be pricey), but also as an effective stylistic choice. Our heroes (or protagonists, at least—more on that later; or, to put it another way: to be continued) are the underdogs, at...

The Geek and Sundry channel has always been closely tied to YouTube, featuring heavily in the site's Original Channels Initiative as well as its themed Geek Week. For its latest series, however, Geek and Sundry is branching out. Felicia Day's nerd-centric hub will make its Hulu debut through Caper, a sci-fi series about three "immortals" and their human roommate. Caper, created by TV vet Amy Berg, stars Justified's Abby Miller as Penny, a human who must fit in with her three roommates, all of whom are super-powered, immortal beings. Not to be outdone, Penny herself is a superhero, possessing an Iron Man-like metal suit. The lack of financial compensation for crime fighting causes rent to become tight, so the four roommates decide to pull off a heist, though they call it a Caper because that sounds better. Caper will run for nine total episodes, with the first two arriving on Hulu,...

Saving the day might be noble work, but it doesn't pay the rent -- which is exactly the problem that forces the crime fighters in Amy Berg's new web series Caper to switch sides for the ultimate heist …or so they hope. The trailer for the Web series created for Felicia Day's Geek & Sundry channel was unveiled during a fan event held at L.A.'s Meltdown Comics yesterday, with Berg and the show's lead cast -- Beth Riesgraf, Harry Shum Jr., Hartley Sawyer and Justified's Abby Miller -- in attendance (you can watch the trailer below). There’s a whole world of superhero-related comedy that has yet to be fully explored because, quite ridiculously, most audiences are too wrapped up in the more serious ventures put out by Marvel and DC in the form of movies and television dramas. But that’s why we have brilliant minds like Felicia Day, who has created a platform where less typical types of programs can be tackled. Day’s Geek & Sundry YouTube channel is going to be the future home of a new web series from Amy Berg and Mike Sizemore, called Caper. It’s the exact kind of silliness that I’ve been wanting from a superhero series for the longest time.
The web series will reunite Berg with Leverage star Beth Riesgraf, who will be playing one of four superheroes who, according to THR, are forced to consider a life of crime in order to fund their crime-fighting lifestyles.

Welcome to "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition" Season 2. We'll confess to being an Abby Miller show virgin, so we can only imagine the stage mom shenanigans that are in store for us because who doesn't like to see grown women who never realized their dreams scream at overly made-up little girls and boys.
The show starts with the 11 dancers who will compete, rather than making us sit through cattle call auditions, so that's nice. Each week has a themed challenge that is based on a skill, but this first week's theme is "fame" and features no particular skill. Abby wants to see All the skills.
It's a darn shame they are not actually dancing to "Fame" -- their moms do wanna live forever, after all. But we do like Abby channeling her Larry from "A Chorus Line."

On the whole, season four of Justified was pretty spectacular. With a few exceptions, almost every episode was filled with perfect writing, skillful, action-packed direction, some of the greatest acting performances on television, and really interesting character arcs. We also said goodbye to one of the show’s greatest assets, Raymond J. Barry as Arlo Givens in one of Justified’s greatest show openers ever, a vicious prison shanking. While Arlo’s passing was a loss to the show, we all made it through, and have one helluva episode to remember him by. Though most of this season did involve the marshallin’ stiffy-inducing search for fugitive Drew Thompson, who was Arlo’s buddy in Vietnam, and who brought cocaine to Harlan County. Drew, of course, turned out to be the kindly old Sheriff Shelby (Jim Beaver), who rescued dumb-but-sweet prostitute Ellen May (Abby Miller) from the clutches of Boyd and Ava, since...

It's been an up-and-down season for Justified's Boyd and Ava Crowder.
Although the pair got engaged and made strides toward becoming the king and queen of Harlan County, Boyd (Walton Goggins) and Ava (Joelle Carter) were constantly hounded by the ghost of Delroy, the owner of the whorehouse whom Ava shot in self-defense in Season 3. In fact, Boyd and Ava's season-long quest to silence Ellen May (Abby Miller), the hooker with a heart of gold who witnessed Ava shooting Delroy, climaxed in the penultimate episode when Ava had a chance to off Ellen May once and for all...

Spoiler alert! Before you read our exclusive interview with Joelle Carter, Justified’s Ava Crowder, make sure you’ve watched this week’s episode, “Peace of Mind,” written by Taylor Elmore and Leonard Chang and directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton. Carter spoke with us about “Peace of Mind” as well as many memorable scenes throughout the season.

While Justified never ceased being one of the best shows on television, it entered into a third season slump. After a near-perfect second season, featuring one of the greatest TV villains, Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale), it couldn’t help but underwhelm in its junior year, replacing her with a slew of uninteresting baddies. Season four, however, is proof positive that a show can redeem itself. It has remained Harlan-centric villain-wise, with the exception of Mike O’Malley’s Detroit mobster Nicky Augustine, who is a vast improvement over who he replaced, Adam Arkin. No offense, Arkin… but O’Malley is killing it. Villains aside, the reasons why Justified continues to triumph this season is because of the consistently amazing writing and direction. The dialogue is nearly poetry, with Boyd turning phrases that sound as if they come out of Shakespeare’s notebook – Nicky even tells him this week, “I’m going to need Google Translate on my...

Something is different about the fourth season of Justified that makes a strong case for being the best season yet. Yes, I realize I said this a year ago about Season 3 too, but for the first time, Justified feels like its traveling to a destination, rather than just giving Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) another big bad guy to kill or run out of Kentucky. Raylan’s buxom barkeep (Jenn Lyon) was the next disappointment in his life we suspected but she was just a distraction so a bigger plot could be laid down. As was the snake charming Billy St. Cyr (Joseph Mazzello), who became putty in Boyd’s (Walton Goggins) hand. A cold case that was hidden in the walls of Arlo’s home became priority #1, but not just at the U.S. Marshal office, but for every major character.

Justified, Season 4, Episode 10: “Get Drew”
Written by Dave Andron and VJ Boyd
Directed by Billy Gierhart
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
The notion of Justified‘s fourth season as being driven by a central mystery has been a flawed premise all along, as it turns out. For a few episodes now, there’s only been a small number of possible candidates for the position, and since he was revealed to be Sheriff Shelby in last week’s outing, the entire back portion of the season will now be devoted to watching the Marshals, Boyd, and the Detroit crew react. And “Get Drew” suggests that this might well be a spectacular way to go.
First off, props where they’re due: we haven’t had enough Nick Searcy this season, but Art’s early scene, in which he recaps the Drew Thompson biography in the most hilariously self-aware fashion possible,...

Even more than in past years, Season 4 of "Justified" has been about family.
Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) has of course been caught up in a cold case that involved his father, and Boyd (Walton Goggins) and Ava (Joelle Carter) have gotten engaged. There's another family angle at play as well, though -- Johnny Crowder's (David Meunier) resentment of Boyd for bringing in an outsider, Colton Rhodes (Ron Eldard), to help run his criminal enterprises.
Johnny has made no secret of his dislike for Colt, and in last week's episode he carried out a plan to prove Colt had been lying about killing Ellen May (Abby Miller), who had in fact escaped from him and, as the audience knows, is hiding out with Sheriff Shelby Parlow (Jim Beaver).

Congratulations, the 2012 film from Juan Cardarelli and Eric M. Levy, tells the story of Jim (Brian Dieztan, NCIS) and Bridget (Abby Miller, Justified) and how their relationship crumbles after he proposes against her will. Part relationship drama, part comedy, the film takes a hard look at how big of a compromise is too big of a compromise for a couple.
I caught Congratulations at the Oxford Film Festival this past weekend and had the privilege of sitting down with Cardarelli and Levy (who also co-wrote the film) after the screening. They talked about the development of the story, how the film would be different with the roles reversed, and the benefits of co-directing.
Check out the full interview below.
Wgtc: Where’d you guys get the inspiration for the film? Why make this movie?
Cardarelli: The four of us, including the two actors, we all think about marriage and getting married.

Justified, Season 4, Episode 4: “This Bird Has Flown”
Written by Taylor Elmore
Directed by Bill Johnson
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm Et on FX
Justified is about a lot of things, but one aspect of the show that often gets overlooked is its nuanced take on masculinity, and its subtle rewriting of the Lone Gunman ethos. Sure, Raylan Givens is a gun-toting badass looking to right wrongs, but he’s also a massive screwup and occasionally even a little difficult to take seriously; at the same time, he tries to live his life in a moral fashion where possible. (Recall the first-season conversation in which a female perp assumes that because he’s a “good ol’ boy” he’ll be down with her anti-Semitic remarks, and is mistaken.) Raylan Givens is frequently allowed to be both a hero and a bit of a fool in the same scene. - “This Bird Has Flown,...
