"Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted on September 26, 2001, the sixth official "Star Trek" series since the debut of Gene Roddenberry's original in 1966. "Enterprise" came right at the end of a massive "Star Trek" renaissance that saw the 1987 debut of the massively successful "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the 1993 debut of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," the 1995 debut of "Star Trek: Voyager," and the release of "Star Trek: Generations," "Star Trek: First Contact," and "Star Trek: Insurrection" in theaters. The glut of "Star Trek" was a dream for TV programmers who would often schedule entire blocks of the franchise merely to puff up their docket. Personally, this author recalls a time when "NextGen," "DS9," and the original series would run back-to-back-to-back on certain weeknights.
The Sci-Fi Channel, now called Syfy, also leaned heavily on "Star Trek" when it launched back in 1992. "Star Trek" reruns became part of the nascent cable station's bread and butter,...

Kevin Spacey may have been found not guilty in his sex offenses trial last year, but he still might as well be The Devil as far as a lot of people are concerned – so it’s fitting that he does indeed play a version of The Devil in his latest project, the psychological thriller The Contract, which just wrapped production in Italy. Spacey’s character in the film directed by Massimo Paolucci is called The Devil, and the filmmakers told Variety that his role is along the lines of “Al Pacino’s in The Devil’s Advocate as Satan who takes the guise of a human lawyer, and that of Robert De Niro in Angel Heart, a Satanic businessman who hires a seedy gumshoe detective to descend into Hell.”
Details on the plot of the English-language film have not been revealed. Spacey is joined in the cast by Eric Roberts and Vincent Spano.

Helldivers 2 has been around for a while now, and it’s a work of absolute madness. Well, you heard it right; it showed no wack by selling nearly 1 million units in the first three days after its release. So, what is the reason behind the game’s success? Or is it a short-lived phenomenon?
To be honest, we don’t think that it’s gonna be a short-lived phenomenon or something. Come on; it’s packed with action elements, scenes that are works of art, and, most importantly, the Space Vietnam thing. So, what is this Space Vietnam everyone keeps talking about?
Some Crazy Folks Calls Helldivers 2 ‘Space Vietnam’ Just one Helldivers 2 battle scene. It. Is. Mayhem.

Time is a tricky adversary in "Futurama." It's been 24 years since the show first debuted in 1999, but in the latest season, available on Hulu, the characters clearly haven't aged 24 years. But, unlike on "The Simpsons," the characters have aged at least a little bit. Bart Simpson has been 10 years old for 35 years. Fry and Leela (Billy West and Katey Sagal) seem to have grown together as a couple and both have matured ever so slightly, implying the passage of real time. In 24 years, they have aged maybe seven. Hilariously, the Professor (West) seems to have continued aging apace, remaining the doddering old fool he always was. The alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) hasn't really grown up, but he has changed over the years, remaining criminal but growing a sense of self-pity. Amy (Lauren Tom) has graduated from college, gotten married, and has three newt-like children with her invertebrate husband Kif (Maurice Lamarche).

Rick and Morty season 7 episode 6 titled Rickfending Morty opens with Morty opening their garage only to find Rick on a drinking binge, lying on the floor. Morty reminded him of their plan to go on adventures. Rick didn’t want to go on an adventure, telling Morty that they might push it to next week. However, Morty pulled out some punched cards, each one entitling him to an adventure of his choice. These punched cards first appeared in Rick and Morty season 4, on the Vindicator’s episode. Morty had been saving those cards to get a free adventure with Rick, but Rick was not ready for that as he found it very annoying. Morty even pulled out a notebook containing notes about their adventures, with made-up titles as proof, but Rick didn’t accept it. Rather, for a better inspection, he decided to take the help of a cosmic observing stone,...

The idea of there being expansive “lore” for Adult Swim’s animated comedy Rick and Morty must seem so silly to people who don’t watch it. “Lore? You mean the goofy show about the drunk scientist and his grandson going on space adventures has a complicated canon?” Yes, believe it or not, we do mean exactly that!
While the show’s writers have historically been hesitant to fully embrace that lore in favor of self-contained episodic adventures, Rick and Morty does indeed have an overarching story featuring important backstory and a continuing plot. Through seven seasons, the series has included a handful of episodes that delve into Rick Sanchez’s origin story and his continuing mission for multiversal revenge. And according to us, those episodes are consistently among the series’ best.
Surely, creator Dan Harmon and company would prefer that you watch Rick and Morty as the complete, episodic experience it was intended as.

Spoilers for "Futurama" season 11 episode 9 follow.
Back in season 8 of "Futurama", Leela leaves the Planet Express crew to get a fresh start in life. She's back by the end of the episode, of course, but she at least gets to enjoy a nice career as a deep-space real estate agent. In fact, she's so successful at it that she gets to casually remark to Hermes near the end that she "just sold a castle to the King of Space."
It's an insane line, just tossed into the scene with no explanation. Nobody asks, "Hold on a second: there's a King of Space? All of space? What authority does he have? Why would a king need to buy a castle through a real estate agent?" That lack of answers is part of what makes the line funny, in much the same way that Bender's "Hecho en Mexico" joke back in season 3 was so amusing.

Kevin Spacey is feeling optimistic about making a career comeback if he’s cleared of the sexual assault allegations brought against him in London.
In a recent interview, the House of Cards alum said that he has people interested in working with him.
“I know that there are people right now who are ready to hire me the moment I am cleared of these charges in London. The second that happens, they’re ready to move forward,” Spacey told ZEITmagazin.
Space also said that “it’s a time in which a lot of people are very afraid that if they support me, they will be canceled.”
The actor made an appearance in court last month via video where it was confirmed that the trial would begin on June 28. Spacey had previously pleaded not guilty to 12 charges relating to alleged offenses against four men, which are said to have taken place between 2001 and 2013.

You’re a good man, Charlie Brown! But you’re maybe not the best at baseball, coach. Then again, we have known this fact ever since Chuck first played the game in a March 1951 comic strip. Seventy-plus years later, the round-headed icon keeps swinging for the fences, so you gotta give him props. In the above exclusive sneak peek from The Snoopy Show‘s upcoming third season on Apple TV+, Charlie even tries to improve the Peanuts gang’s base-running skills and finds himself faced with a regrettable tale of the tape. However, we do appreciate the fancy footwork by former Flashbeagle Snoopy and Lucy, who has way more finesse on the field than she does holding a football. Apple recently released the trailer for Season 3 of their original Peanuts series, which will drop all twelve episodes globally on Friday, June 9. One of the joys of animation is hearing a single actor play a myriad of characters. Voiceover work gives an actor the opportunity to explore their range in a totally unexpected way. In Adult Swim's popular series "Rick and Morty," co-creator Justin Roiland voices the two titular leads as well as other tertiary characters like Mr. Poopy Butthole.
The sci-fi elements of the show lead the characters to other planets and dimensions, where they often encounter alternate versions of themselves. This gives the animators and the actors a chance to create distinct versions of the same character. For Sarah Chalke, this presented an exciting but challenging opportunity to get to know a new side of her character, Beth.

"Rick and Morty" season 6 is returning this weekend after taking a few weeks off, and there's a lot to look forward to. Rick has his portal gun back, there's an Evil Rick out there who still needs to be taken down, and the writing seems to be as strong as ever. But maybe the most interesting part of season 6 so far is how much Beth (Sarah Chalke) and Jerry (Chris Parnell) have changed as characters over the years, going from the parents who mostly stayed at home for the episode's B-plots, to characters who carry some of the most fascinating A-plots of the series.
Going into the second half of the season, I got a chance to talk to actors Sarah Chalke and Chris Parnell about their thoughts on season 6 and what it's like playing these characters. And yes, we definitely talked about the events of "Bethic Twinstinct."

I wasn't really sure what to expect when meeting Elisabeth Moss for the first time in Cannes. We were about to spend the next three days together doing interviews, events, and dinners. Of course, I'd known of her since she starred as First Daughter Zoey Bartlet on The West Wing in the late '90s and early 2000s and wowed us all in Girl, Interrupted, holding her own with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. And I had just binge-watched The Handmaid's Tale and started Top of the Lake. Neither of her characters on those two TV shows were people I thought I would want to hang with, but luckily for me, Irl Lizzie is much more carefree, relaxed, and hilarious. In fact, she was a pleasure from the first minute we met. Literally - within one minute of meeting, she and my awesome, fun husband, Brian, bonded over baseball stats,...

Science Fiction is a term that means a lot of different things to a lot of different fans. When I was kid I thought it kind of meant Star Trek and Lost in Space, Bradbury books and the Twilight Zone episodes that included aliens. Of course, it’s so much bigger than that. There are subgenres and all kinds of slivers of fandoms that are populated with bazillions of fans. And Star Wars, of course, has just about transcended the entire genre and become its own thing.
So it’s was all the more interesting that a local art exhibit chose to focus on the earliest incarnation of science fiction. It’s called “Fun in Space: An Homage to Pulp Science Fiction.”

The Star Trek franchise will be 50 years old this September. It’s one of the most popular and enduring of all TV and film franchises, still going strong nearly 50 years after its debut in 1966. A third film of the rebooted series is in the works. Cinelinx looks at the ever-popular sci-fi property as it warps into its 50th year.
Star Trek, a show that didn’t do very well in the ratings when it first debuted, has become a multi-media monster. It has gone from television to cartoons, novels, comic books, video games and films. Many of the character names have become an iconic part of pop-culture. The real-life space shuttle Enterprise was named in honor of the space vessel from Star Trek. The whole concept of the sci-fi convention was begun by the fan-created ‘Trek’ conventions of the early seventies. Few franchises can claim to have had the impact...

[Lemmy passed away yesterday. Rip, you badass!] As we watch what may soon be the end of Motörhead, with a fine new album just out but iconic leader Lemmy's failing health forcing him from the stage on multiple nights, let's also look back at a milestone in the group's long career.
Bassist/singer Lemmy Kilmister started Motörhead in 1975 after getting kicked out of prog-rockers Hawkwind for being jailed on a drug charge in Canada during a tour. The band's early days were not marked by success. After being signed by United Artists, Motörhead's first shot at recording an album was rejected, and the label then blocked the group's attempted release of a single on Stiff. The coolest thing you’re going to find all year is hitting on September 15th, and it’s packed with goodies. It’s the 50th Anniversary of Lost in Space, and the complete series is going to be available on Blu-Ray, and the release gives you a lot for your money.
Not only does the release have over 7 hours of total bonus content, but it has brand new featurettes, new commentary tracks on episodes, and tons of archival footage.
This is an amazing package that is not only something for fans of the show, but is a great opportunity to expose the show to millions of new ones.
Much as the show has gone down in history as something of a goof, you might be surprised at how much future shows owe to this one, and not just by way of carving out a bit of cultural popularity for the sci-fi genre.

Matt Berry chats to us about his voice work in the new Spongebob Squarepants movie, House Of Fools, music, and Toast Of London...
We like comedian and musician Matt Berry, and it's a good time to be a fan of him and his buttery-smooth baritone. He's currently strutting his stuff in the surreal Vic & Bob's House Of Fools, and his Rose D'Or winning comedy Toast Of London returns for a third series later this year.
Now he's in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water, voicing a magic space dolphin called Bubbles. Now there's a sentence you rarely find yourself typing. So naturally we had to talk to him to find out all about it...
I've followed your work ever since Snuff Box, and The SpongeBob Movie might be the craziest role you've played, would you agree?

Christopher Nolan has a secret.
“You know, this is basically a film about the end of the world,” Nolan told TheWrap of his blockbuster Interstellar. “We don’t advertise it as that so much, because that makes it sound like it’s not necessarily the kind of popcorn movie people want to see during the Christmas season. But it is a film about the end of the world.”
Of course, Interstellar is about more than that. It’s about a space expedition to find a new planet for the human race as Earth is in its death throes. It’s...

We chatted to Charlie Brooker, Jon Hamm and Rafe Spall about tech dystopia Black Mirror’s terrific festive episode, White Christmas…
This interview contains a spoiler for, er, The Snowman.
Airing tonight on Channel 4 is White Christmas, a feature-length episode of Black Mirror that weaves together three tech-paranoia tales set against the backdrop of the festive season. Writer Charlie Brooker likens the special to a selection box - a sound description if you can imagine Cadbury’s substituting Crunchies and Curly Wurlies for tragicomic ruminations on voyeurism, torture and ostracisation.
It’s a terrific ninety minutes; funny, acerbic and eventually horrifying. It feels exactly like watching a condensed series of Black Mirror in a single sitting, which should be both recommendation and warning to fans of the show. However disturbing a reflection of our world Brooker shows us though, in his own words, “There’s nothing in that that...

Christopher Nolan goes on his own space odyssey with the grand Interstellar. Here’s our spoiler-free review...
In co-writer and director Christopher Nolan’s vision of the future, it’s not the death of our planet’s vegetation that poses the greatest threat to humanity, but a lack of ambition. As crops fail and the Earth shrivels into a dust bowl, its inhabitants have stopped looking up at the stars with hope, and instead face their fate with a gloomy resignation. “We don’t need engineers,” a teacher tells Matthew McConaughey’s Cooper, a test pilot turned farmer, “we ran out of food.”
Nolan’s latest magnum opus, arguably his riskiest so far, is a grand meditation on exploration, loneliness, love and self-sacrifice. In the tradition of such weighty genre classics as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris, this feels like the director’s own attempt to make what Arthur...

For Halloween, we celebrate The Simpsons' best Treehouse Of Horror stories, feat. zombies, Hitchcock and Kubrick spoofs and more...
“Nothing seems to bother my kids but tonight's show, which I totally wash my hands of, is really scary.”
For anyone who grew up watching The Simpsons, the Treehouse Of Horror Halloween specials are an annual horror staple, from spooky couch gag to horror-themed credits. You can learn an awful lot of things just from watching the show, but for younger audiences, these episodes gave us our introduction to certain iconic horror stories.
Having ditched the early framing device of the family telling scary stories to one another, with Springfielders cast in key roles, the format is now closer to a mini-anthology of terror with three stories that take place outside of canon. This has usually given the writers licence to be more gruesome and outlandish than in the regular series,...

A lot of people see cinema as a way to capture reality. Quite frankly, I do not see it that way. It is an artificial medium, and everyone watching knows it. The capturing reality mindset is needed for some pictures, but it is not a hard and fast rule. I think filmmakers embracing film's artificiality can make for very interesting products. One of my favorite ways to highlight that is by directly breaking the fourth wall, a storytelling technique that addresses the audience in very a direct way. It can make them complicit in a nefarious plot. It can accuse them. It can bring them in on a joke. It is a very fun device to use, and, for the most part, it works when it's used. Below is a pretty fun supercut of breaking the fourth wall in movies. Here, though, breaking the fourth wall is translated as looking directly at the lens.

Most movies that break out of the pack, with their own special blend of technique and vision, can be said to defy categories. But Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, which drew massive audiences this weekend and, I suspect, spoke to them (as it did to me) in a powerful and transporting way, may be a unique case. Offhand, I can’t name a science fiction movie that mesmerizes you because it feels at once so novel and so retro, so thrillingly forward-thinking and so exquisitely cast from the visual poetry of a long-ago era. Just think about it:

The fourth film in the Lake Placid killer croc series is called The Final Chapter. But does it bring the saga to a close? Matt finds out...
“What’s your favourite Lake Placid film?”
You’d be surprised at how many conversations don’t start this way. It’s not for a lack of trying on my part, but it’s a question that seems to bring an awkward air to interactions and induce a strange, saddening silence. I think the problem is that when people think of the Lake Placid films, they think of one complete narrative, rather than four separate films. When asked to consider them as individual entities, they become confused and don’t know how to respond.
Or it could be that most people have only heard of the first one. It’s difficult to know.

Gravity trailer goes ‘bong!’ as George Clooney and Sandra Bullock go flying George Clooney and Sandra Bullock become the victims of an unfortunate incident while watching the sun rise. Skin cancer? Nope. Do they get mugged? Nope. What happens then? As you can see in the Gravity trailer below, following a loud Bong, Bam, Boom! Clooney and Bullock quite literally go flying. Something — was it a meteorite? Intergalactic debris? — has collided against their spacecraft (or space shuttle or whatever). See, they’re watching the sun "rise" from way up there. Check out the Gravity trailer below. (Photo: George Clooney in Gravity movie.) Gravity trailer: 2001: A Space Odyssey Meets Lost in Space Meets Apollo 13? The Gravity trailer, or rather, teaser, provides quite bit of action with minimal dialogue. It’s impossible to tell what kind of relationship (veteran astronaut) George Clooney and (medical engineer and tyro astronaut) Sandra Bullock share.

With rumors abounding that the popular storylines "Planet Hulk" and "World War Hulk" may serve as the basis for the next Hulk movie and third Avengers movie respectively, fans are looking back to those storylines to see what elements the movies might borrow if the rumors prove true.
One of the most intriguing aspects of those storylines were the allies that Hulk gathered during "Planet Hulk" and brought back to Earth to aid him in wreaking havoc during "World War Hulk." That assemblage of aliens, known as the Warbound, are represented by species from every corner of the universe, united by their loyalty to the Hulk who proved himself a worthy leader on the planet Sakaar.
This week in Galaxy Guide, we're going to take a look at each member of the Warbound, and see what they contribute to the force the Hulk uses to bring vengeance to Earth.

I’ll start off by being completely honest with you. I shudder at the thought of reboots – they’re usually an excuse for some money hungry TV execs to bring back a much-loved property with the sole purpose of rinsing it for everything it’s got.
Just the mere mention of the word ‘reboot’ sends a sharp stabbing sensation through my cerebral cortex with memories of recent ‘classics’ such as Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, 90210, Knight Rider and V coming to the fore.
Admittedly these problems can usually be attributed to Hollywood. Their fear of new properties quite often means they revert back to something they know (as we see with countless movies), so it’s no real surprise it happens with TV shows as well. It stifles creativity and variety of content, but from a financial perspective often makes sense.

With "Doctor Strange" now confirmed to be a part of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, discussion will inevitably turn to how the Master of the Mystic Arts might be interpreted when translated from his comic book roots to another medium.
But this isn't Stephen Strange's first time at the rodeo.
This week in Galaxy Guide, we're going to take a look at Doctor Strange's history in film and television, and examine some of the more notable examples for possible clues as to how the good doctor might appear in the McU.
The Sorcerer Supreme has in fact had a live-action portrayal before; this came in 1978 in the form of the "Dr. Strange" made-for-tv movie, starring Peter Hooten (perhaps best known for his role in the original "Inglorious Bastards") as the titular magician. The film was created as a pilot for a potential TV series, one that never materialized.

We already know that actress Jaimie Alexander is a true warrior, having bounced back from a horrific injury she suffered on the set of "Thor: The Dark World." But what about her character, Lady Sif? What makes this Asgardian battle-maiden such a formidable foe to the forces of evil, and a valued ally to the God of Thunder?
This week in Galaxy Guide, we're going to take a look at the life and times of Thor's on-again, off-again love interest, who is a match for him not only in romance, but on the battlefield as well.

From the silent movie era into the early 1930s, the standard aspect ratio of Hollywood films was 1.33:1, a ratio developed by cinema pioneer Thomas Edison. Early in the “talkie” era, when the soundtrack was added to the side of the film frame, the width of the image was reduced even more, creating a more square-shaped picture. Since the early 1950s, most movies have been filmed in a process where the width of the visual frame is between 1.85 to 2.4 times greater than the height. This means that for every inch of visual height, the frame as projected on the screen is between 1.85 to 2.4 times as wide. This results in a panoramic view that can add a greater breadth and perception of the environment and mood of a movie. The rise in popularity of television is credited with inciting the motion picture’s move to the widescreen systems that flourished throughout the 50s,...

The past week has been filled with "Guardians of the Galaxy" casting rumors, but perhaps none were as tantalizing as the possibility of Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Star-Lord. That possibility has now apparently been put to bed, but it's worth noting that while Gordon-Levitt may have been in the running to play the Guardians' lone human member, he first gained fame playing an alien on the critically acclaimed sitcom "3rd Rock From The Sun."
Given that, this week we’ve decided to put the spotlight on three of the most notable alien races of the Marvel Universe, some of whom may well play a role in upcoming Marvel films.
The Kree

In the wake of Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, and with it, the "Star Wars" franchise, there has been much speculation about one particular corner of that multimedia juggernaut, namely the "Star Wars" comic books. Produced exclusively by independent publisher Dark Horse since 1991, questions immediately arose about the future of the "Star Wars" comics in light of another Disney acquisition of the past few years: Marvel Entertainment, which among other things is the comic book industry's leading publisher.
According to recent reports, a decision has been made, and Dark Horse will lose the license to Marvel after 2013, with new "Star Wars" comics coming from Marvel in 2015. But could the Marvel/Star Wars connection extend beyond the comic book arena, and even onto the big-screen? Marvel has their own space opera in "Guardians of the Galaxy" hitting theaters in 2014, so we thought it might be fun to compare and contrast the characters populating these respective space epics,...

With Josh Trank's "Fantastic Four" reboot now scheduled for a March 6, 2015 release date, things seem to be proceeding full steam ahead for Marvel's First Family. But one of the questions the filmmakers will have to wrestle with is the matter of the antagonists the Ff will face in this new take on the venerable franchise.
While Doctor Doom is usually the first name that springs to mind when it comes to enemies of the Fantastic Four, he was used extensively in both of the Tim Story-directed features, and we also got Galactus (sort of) in "Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer". That certainly doesn't preclude either of them from playing a role in this new film, but the minds behind the movie may want to add a new threat to the mix that audiences haven't seen on the big-screen before, much as the "Amazing Spider-Man" reboot introduced the Lizard.

A sci-fi movie wouldn’t be the same without a hypnotic journey through time and space. Here’s our celebration of cinema’s finest genre vortexes...
It’s a given that any sci-fi protagonist will, at some point in their adventures, descend into a kind of churning whirlpool in space. The experience is probably an entry requirement in the sci-fi hero private smoking room, if such a thing exists. “What? You haven’t been through a vortex of flashing lights? You haven’t stared at the benighted abyss which lies beyond death? Get out. Get out of sci-fi hero club.”
Science fiction is all about poking at the edges of human experience. And sometimes, about what might happen if we head off into the depths of space. What - or who - might we find? Does space loop back on itself, so your ship effectively appears on the other side...

Actress Sara Canning, best known for playing Jenna Sommers in The Vampire Diaries, is to star in Primeval: New World.

When I recently asked for your TV-related questions, I got a bumper crop of great ones. Thanks for sending in so many good queries, and I tried to answer as many as I could get to here.
But one note before I get to them: We may take on a couple I didn't get to in this week's Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan podcast, during which my co-host Ryan McGee will also discuss "Awake," premiering Thursday. Look for that review Wednesday and the podcast late this week.
Now, on to your questions!
Dale Kunz: Do you think "Mad Men's" long hiatus has cost it the cultural initiative? I should be bugnuts for it coming back, but I'm not. Think that first new hour will snap us all back into place as fans or will they have to work at it to draw back their audience?

Back in the day, people used to trade and barter as a means of payment, and judging by the still-forlorn economic picture, give it a few more years, and everyone will be forced to use beans, string and seeds as elementary commerce.
That grim view of the economy sure isn't helped by the constant bombardment of news reports, which I swear are getting odder by the day. Not least in the fact that on the one hand, we get reports of famous people who are shelling out on the swankiest clothes and bling to attend showbiz parties or awards dos. And also, there's some big do later on this year, for which money is apparently available in readiness for great big...
