Jersey Boys is the behind-the-music story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard and the radio just couldn't get enough of. But while their harmonies were perfect on stage, off stage it was a very different story -- a story that has made them an international sensation all over again. The show features all their hits including Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Oh What A Night, Walk Like A Man, Can't Take My Eyes Off You and Working My Way Back To You.

In the From Script to Screen series, we break down a pivotal scene from the current TV season with the people who put pen to paper, to give us an exclusive inside look at how an original idea transforms into a memorable TV moment.
Five seasons in, The Blacklist is leaning into the comedy.
In Wednesday’s episode, titled “Miss Rebecca Thrall,” NBC’s crime thriller returns to form with a traditional case of the week featuring a new blacklister for Raymond Reddington (James Spader), his criminal empire in ruins, to track down. “The Cher Show,” a musical based on the life of the celebrated pop star and actress, will premiere in Chicago next summer ahead of a Broadway opening in fall 2018, producers Flody Suarez and Jeffrey Seller announced Wednesday. Previews will begin on June 12, 2018 at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre before the show transfers to Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre in the fall. “The Cher Show” features a book by Rick Elice — the Tony-winning writer who adapted Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ story into the hit “Jersey Boys” — and follows the life of Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere Bono Allman, who became...

Jessie J is getting back into action in terms of new music. After releasing her third full-length, Sweet Talker, back in 2014, she’s been a bit quiet aside from her Pitch Perfect 2 song, “Flashlight” and Ice Age contribution, “My Superstar.” While there isn’t a new album just yet, she’s still going to be releasing something new in the coming days in the form of a cover.
According to AllMusic, Jessie J is set to release a cover of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons’ classic, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” in partnership with a new campaign from make-up company, Make Up For Ever. Sure, it’s a little more corporate than we’d want, but is there really ever any room to complain about new Jessie J songs? It’s a bit of an interesting track to take on, too, but if you listen to the original,...

A musical based on pop icon and Twitter maven Cher is coming your way, Playbill reports. Rick Elice, Tony-nominated co-librettist of Jersey Boys, is writing the book for a musical based on Cher, which will presumably include her own music just as Jersey Boys did with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. But do we really need someone to write a book to Cher's musical when she's proven her wordsmith abilities on Twitter? Mix in her tweets as the book and her classic hits and you've got yourself a Tony winner.Prologue A haunting flash-forward, sung by a Greek-like chorus of Cher's career to come. Act One Cher, lonely, searches for love. She finds Sonny. Love turns tumultuous. Ultimately, it ends in divorce. Act Two She's embarking on her solo journey. She finds rivalries. She finds activism. But, and maybe this is the most important part, she'd end her story...

Frankie Valli says he thinks Bruno Mars could be the next Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley.
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons shot to super stardom in the early 1960s with their first hit “Sherry” followed up by “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and many more since.
The story of the Four Seasons is now being played out for the world to see in Jersey Boys. The Tony Award winning show is currently playing at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood until October 19th, and Frankie himself was there to witness the show’s opening night.

While studios tout records, market share and No. 1 status based on box office grosses, we thought it’d be a good idea to look at some of this year’s summer films (tentpoles and not) to see how their budgets stacked up against their worldwide grosses to date. These budget numbers do not include domestic/international marketing and distribution costs, nor do they take into account the splits with exhibitors, but they do give an idea of outlay and income. Bear in mind, that while some of the biggest offshore grosses come from China, the studios are only getting a 25% cut from that territory. Also, some of these pictures will end up doing well in home entertainment and may make a profit over time — as in, a few years.

American music history has had its fair share of notable moments. The 1950s and 1960s in particular, were an era in which catchy songs and talented performers reigned supreme. One such group was Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. These gifted young men were responsible for hit after hit including but not limited to “Sherry”, “Walk Like a Man”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. A highly entertaining Tony Award-winning Broadway musical was created to detail the rise of The Four Seasons and it ran and continues to run, selling tickets to this day about a decade after its debut. A Tony-winning musical about a Hall of Fame rock group by an Oscar-winning director—on paper, it sounds like a sure-fire hit. So why did Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys fall flat in theaters this weekend?
Simply because Clint Eastwood should have never directed it in the first place.
When Jersey Boys opened on Broadway back in 2005, it broke the mold of the emerging trend of “jukebox musicals”—that is, musicals that repurposed pre-existing songs and placed them into stories—by using the songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that were already loved and adored by millions to tell their own story.

Last week's big box office weekend was followed by a relatively quiet one where only one movie was able to gross $30 million and that was the ensemble comedy sequel Think Like a Man Too which came in at #1 with that amount estimated for its first three days. Director Clint Eastwood returned with the musical drama Jersey Boys (Warner Bros.), based on the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It opened in fourth place with just $13.5 million in 2,905 theaters, an average of $4,647 per site.

Adapting the Tony Award winning jukebox musical, Clint Eastwood takes the directors chair for Jersey Boys, telling the story of the formation and eventual break up of legendary rock n' roll group Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. From their humble beginnings flirting with prison and the mob in New Jersey to releasing several number one hits, the music is the key here, and Eastwood's own love of music shines through, treating each song with the respect it deserves, and getting the audiences toe tapping on more than one occasion. It's when the drama takes over, and the music is put to one side, that the movie falls down. A hold over from the stage version, each member of the band take turns breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to the audience, elaborating on events as they happen. It's a very affable narrative choice, and keeps proceedings fresh for the most part,...

‘Jersey Boys’ movie review: Great music fails to save Clint Eastwood-directed film version of the 2005 Broadway musical (photo: John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons in ‘Jersey Boys’) Clint Eastwood’s semi-historically accurate biopic of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Jersey Boys, is based on the hit 2005 Broadway musical — and it is a crushing bore. But we shall start with the positive: In Eastwood’s film, the music and the performances of the music (which are not the same thing) are great. That is to be expected, as the Jersey Boys movie cast is mostly composed from cast members of the stage show, including Tony winner John Lloyd Young, who happens to look a lot like Frankie Valli and who has a four-plus octave range. Lucky boy. Lloyd Young is also a serviceable actor with a number of (mostly stage) credits that did not require a piercing falsetto.

Clint Eastwood is such an amazing director, and he managed to turn the Broadway Musical hit Jersey Boys into a wonderfully entertaining movie that I think anyone could enjoy. Eastwood have never really done a musical before, so I wasn't really sure how this would turn out. But, he pulled it off brilliantly. The director once again proves that he's still one of the best directors working in Hollywood.
I know a lot of people in the "geek" world don't really care for musicals like this. If Jersey Boys doesn't seem like your thing… I understand, but I've got to at least ask you to please give it a shot. It's more than just a musical, it's got a timeless heartfelt story that has the power to inspire the people that see it.
The film is based on the true story of the classic four-man band Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

There's a part of me that refuses to see the movie of Jersey Boys on account of its being a musical made for the stage. That can be said of most if not all musicals, really; but such "jukebox musicals" are mainly about giving audiences a live-concert experience of classic songs sung new by great talents of Broadway. On the big screen it's an oddity to have a soundtrack full of covers when the original tunes, which are usually better, are available. But then, I never saw the stage version of Jersey Boys, so the movie should be my best way of now seeing the song-filled story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It may have been initially intended for one medium, but the alternative is a lot more accessible, now and for the future. Just like any of our other...

I probably went into Jersey Boys with expectations that were too high. That's not to say I expected some grand musical masterpiece, delicately crafted and impeccably told. No, I just wanted a decent popcorn flick about a couple of wise guys from outside Newark that made it big by singing some tunes. What's the worst that can happen? We get a few decent songs, we hear a bunch of falsetto, Christopher Walken will mug for the camera as a gangster, and it'll all be in and done before things go too far awry.I can't speak for the stage show, but I can attest to this: Jersey Boys, the film, is abysmal. Pop nostalgia is an odd thing. It’s the connective tissue between the new movie Jersey Boys and this week’s Doc Option, the tremendously obscure 1976 film All This and World War II. Jersey Boys is based on the hit 2005 Broadway play of the same name, a dramatization of the rise and fall of The Four Seasons. All This and World War II features the music of The Beatles, the act that dethroned The Four Seasons from their perch at the top of musical popularity in the mid-’60s. But the doc also incorporates The Four Seasons and its perpetual frontman Frankie Valli into its mix. If you’re wondering what kind of a production would concoct such a situation, well, the answer is stranger than anything you’re probably expecting. All This and World War II is an 88-minute recap of World War II, consisting of newsreel footage and clips from movies and propaganda films of...

There’s a moment in Clint Eastwood’s breezy film of the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons “jukebox musical” Jersey Boys that throws a spotlight — or, more precisely, a streetlight — on what’s missing. It’s in the final scene, in 1990, at the group’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Frankie (John Lloyd Young, repeating his Tony-winning Broadway turn) tells us (he talks to the camera) that nothing in his life compares to the moment that he and his pals found their sound “under a Jersey streetlight.” It’s a lovely image … except it’s not in the movie, where there’s no special streetlight and the sound just kind of happens. Surprisingly, for a musician, Eastwood doesn’t seem interested in where the Four Seasons’ sound came from, in the Italian appropriation of African-American doo-wop, in the origin or unique quality of Valli’s exhilarating falsetto.

There are, you could argue, two Clint Eastwoods. One is the strong, near-silent type, the man with no name but a pair of Colt revolvers or a .44 Magnum, the lean avenging angel who asks if you feel lucky, punk, and would care to make his day. Whether he's a tough cop, a tough cowboy, a tough secret-service agent, a tough military man, a tough experimental-jet-fighter pilot or a tough racist old coot, the part is a variation on Eastwood's screen persona. ★★☆☆☆Based on the Tony Award-winning musical, in the racier hands of a David O. Russell or Martin Scorsese, Jersey Boys (2014) could have been a real smash hit. Unfortunately, Clint Eastwood was the mismatched director brought in to adapt the stage play for the big-screen. Or, rather, he doesn't. This is very much a straight-laced (with the emphasis on "straight"), workmanlike retelling of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' rise and somewhat underwhelming fall, with three of the four stars of the Broadway show shoehorned in to retain some vague sense of continuity. Not that they help what is a largely dull music industry saga, more TV movie than vibrant celebration of American youth culture.

Jersey Boys opens with a shot of Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza) casually walking across a mean street in Jersey to address us – the audience. His cool confidence and smug demeanor is our first indication that these boys that we’ll meet are from the wrong side of the tracks. Watching Tommy and his tag-along buddy in crime Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young) attempt to rise out of the immoral Jersey shadow to a life of fame and fortune thanks to some catchy tunes isn’t necessarily the feel-good, entertaining story that you would expect from a film based on an uplifting, fun-loving pop quartet. As Valli and the gang later learn, you can’t always escape your past. Which is quite fitting since its director seems stuck in his tired and traditional ways as well.
Clint Eastwood’s resume shows that the director is quite comfortable in more dramatic territory.

“Jersey Boys,” the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, soared to critical and commercial success largely on the catchy tunes that made Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons musical legends. But when it comes to the big screen version, critics seem to agree — Clint Eastwood has made a movie that may have left too many of the musical group's iconic songs on the cutting room floor in favor of focusing on their offstage drama. The R-rated musical chronicles the shady dealings and mob ties of Frankie Valli and his bandmates, and their subsequent rise to fame as the crooners of such hits as.

Jersey Boys has enjoyed enormous popularity on stage around the world, largely because the hit songs made famous by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are so utterly enjoyable. The screen adaptation, by playwrights Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, is somewhat darker in tone than the show, but retains the key ingredients that have made it so successful: a rags-to-riches tale with glimpses behind the scenes of the music business. I never thought this was the stuff of great drama, but I like a good show-biz underdog story as much as anyone, and I do love those songs. The result is pretty well irresistible. Both Erich Bergen who plays Bob Gaudio and Michael Lomenda as Nick Massi perfected their roles on stage before being cast in the screen version. Lomenda appeared in the long-running Toronto production of the musical as Massi. Rounding out the quartet is another familiar face to “Boardwalk Empire” fans, Vincent Piazza as Tommy DeVito.

If one were compiling a list of natural choices to direct the long-awaited big screen adaptation of Jersey Boys, Clint Eastwood probably wouldn't be anywhere near the running. His approach to drama has always wavered somewhere between earnest and po-faced, with his last few efforts (J Edgar, Hereafter, Invictus) leaning distinctly towards the latter, while this jukebox musical won hearts on Broadway and the West End thanks chiefly to its catchy tunes and snappy, fleet-footed pace.
There's not much rhythm or vim to Eastwood's enjoyable but slavish chronicle of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' origins, which translates Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice's book more or less word-for-word but inevitably lacks the immediacy of live theatre. What it does have is the musical chops, thanks to...

If Hollywood blockbusters are currently crippled by fear of the unknown, Broadway musicals – an ever-increasing number of them based on Hollywood blockbusters – are hardly less guilty. The jukebox musical is, if you will, the Great White Way's superhero reboot: their safest gambit, removing the greatest variable in a genre that has, after all, always been reliant on existing story material. Who needs composers when perfectly good popular discographies are there for the taking? “Jersey Boys” was a swift hit when it opened on Broadway in 2005; credit zesty staging or a tidily structured book if you will, but it's a show that owes its pull to one of the most buoyant American songbooks in Top 40 history. Those creamy harmonies, those tightly syncopated choruses, that unearthly falsetto: Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons hadn't the artistic reach of contemporaries like The Beatles, nor the cool strut of the Detroit acts to which...

Jersey Boys is a classic rags to riches story of four boys from Jersey who paved the way to fame and fortune with their singing voices.
This week, Clint Eastwood directs the big screen adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys. The film follows the rise and fall of 1960s singer Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the group who brought us classic hits like “Sherry”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” and several other songs that have populated some of our favourite movie soundtracks like Grease and Dirty Dancing.
Hollywood has long looked to The Great White Way for inspiration, diving into the musicals and plays that touch down on and off-Broadway.

A dash of showbiz pizzazz has been lost but some welcome emotional depth has been gained in the big-screen version of the still-thriving theatrical smash Jersey Boys. Approaching its 10th year on Broadway, the highly entertaining account of the checkered career of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is currently the 13th longest-running show in Broadway history and continues to flourish on tour. The film’s basic fidelity to its source, along with the music’s continuing appeal, suggests solid prospects among mainstream audiences for this story of working-class street guys who made it big but never could

There are a lot of blockbuster hopefuls coming out this summer, but perhaps none of them are more risky than Clint Eastwood’s song-and-dance musical Jersey Boys, a star-studded adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name. As Rob Marshall, whose ambitious musical Nine flopped at the box office, and Adam Shankman, whose Rock of Ages only faired slightly better and never recouped its budget, can attest, movie musicals are very tough to do.
Honestly, I don’t think that Eastwood’s Jersey Boys is going to fare much better than Nine or Rock of Ages at the box office, but hopefully it will at least do a solid job of communicating the fascinating story of popular ’60s musicians Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
Today, seven new clips for the film have hit the web, and you can watch them down below. The acting looks very solid all around,...

The cast of the movie version of the hit Broadway musical Jersey Boys may not be filled with household names, but many of the actors starring in Clint Eastwood’s tale of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are certainly familiar with the material. All but one of the members of the big-screen version of the Four Seasons previously starred in stage productions of the musical, with at least two actors even auditioning for roles in the long-gestating film when Jon Favreau was attached as the director. Okay I admit it, I'm a showtunes queen! I love Broadway and musicals, good musicals, that is. And I think "Jersey Boys" is a good musical. The rugs-to-riches tale of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is captivating and the soundtrack rocks!
And now comes the inevitable movie version, and to be honest? It actually looks good! Director Clint Eastwood added some grittiness to the Broadway gloss and voila -- a musical that will steal our hearts this summer, June 20th to be exact! Oh, plus points for adding Christopher Walken to the mix! Will he sing? Or at least dance?
Take a look at the new "Jersey Boys" trailer and then sing with the soundtrack:

Clint Eastwood is an amazing director, and his latest project is a big screen adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys. It's definitely a very different kind of project for the director, but it looks like he did a great job bringing this story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons to life. For those of you not familiar with these guys, we have a trailer for you to check out, and you're sure to recognize the classic songs in the film.

Clint Eastwood's output as of late has been pretty uneven: for every triumph ("Letters from Iwo Jima"), there's a major disappointment ("J. Edgar") or outright dud ("Hereafter"). When given great material, though, Eastwood can really make it shine, and there's some potential in his adaptation of the hit musical "Jersey Boys," which just released its first trailer. Eastwood's first musical as a director (following his aborted attempt to remake "A Star is Born" with Beyonce), "Jersey Boys" tells the story of the Four Seasons (later known as Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) as they went from rags to riches, and as their personal troubles became greater, including debts, mob involvement, strained friendships, and Valli's relationship with his troubled daughter. The pedigree here is huge: the jukebox musical won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actor for John Lloyd Young (who reprises his role as Valli here...
