EA is planning on making a movie based on a running industry joke.
The video game developer is allegedly developing ‘Madden Curse’, a spoof sport comedy based on the game’s urban myth that any star that graces the cover art of the latest Madden video game will be struck down with a career-ending injury.
VP of EA Entertainment, Pat O’Brien, is said to be steering the project which certainly has an eerie history to draw from.
In 1999, cover star Garrison Hearst broke his leg and never recovered, in 2000 box lead Dorsey Levens injured his knee and never won his starting job back, and in 2004 Michael Vick broke his leg one day after Madden 2004 was released.
And that’s just a summary of the curse, which has felled countless more.
The movie will follow the tale of a former Madden champion who comes out of retirement just as he...

Electronic Arts is developing "Madden Curse," a sports comedy feature that explores an infamous jinx that seems to strike NFL players who appear on the cover of EA's popular "Madden" video game series with career shortening injuries shortly after reports The Wrap.
The story will follow a former Madden video game champion who is forced out of retirement just as he finds himself on the corner of the game's cover -- and subject to the curse.
NFL legend John Madden appeared on the cover of all Madden games until 1999. Since then annual cover boys have included 1999's Garrison Hearst (who then broke his fibula), 2000's Dorsey Levens (knee injury), 2001's Eddie George (general decline), 2002's Dante Culpepper (knee injury), 2003's Marshall Faulk (ankle injury), 2004's Michael Vick (broken leg), 2005's Ray Lewis (torn hamstring), 2006's Donovan McNabb (sports hernia), 2007's Shaun Alexander (broken foot), and 2008's Vince Young (quads & knee...

Out of all the video game to movie adaptations we've been seeing as of late, this has got to be one of the weirdest. In fact, if we weren't in the middle of December, I would probably assume this was an early April Fool's joke. According to The Wrap [1], EA is planning a movie based on their long running, wildly successful Madden football game franchise. While that might not be so weird in itself, the premise is not about an underdog football team that wins a championship thanks to the coaching of John Madden. Instead, it will be a comedy about the "Madden Curse", the so-called jinx that brings misfortune to the athlete who adorns the cover of each year's game. Don't believe in the curse? Check out this complete list of Madden cover athletes and the accidents that have befallen them: 1999: Garrison Hearst -- Broke his fibula in...

Electronic Arts is developing "Madden Curse," a sports comedy based on the curse that many believe strikes NFL players who appear on the cover of the company's popular "Madden" video game. The story will follow a former "Madden" video game champion who is forced out of retirement just as he finds himself on the corner of the game's cover -- and subject to the curse. Here is a recap of the curse: * In 1999, the cover featured Garrison Hearst, who broke his fibula in the Nfc divisional playoffs. * In 2000, the cover featured Barry Sanders, who retired before the season. A new cover was then released with Dorsey Levens, who then injured his knee and never returned as a starter. * In 2001, the cover featured Eddie George, whose career ended a year later. * In 2002, the cover featured Dante Culpepper, who then suffered a season-ending knee injury. * In 2003, the cover featured Marshall Faulk, who...

The Wrap's Deal Central has scored exclusive details on what might be the worst movie idea in the history of mankind: videogame publisher Electronic Arts is entering the movie business and their planned first feature is a film based on the popular 'Madden NFL' franchise. While there have been some great movies made about football, EA's plans for a big screen 'Madden' have little to do with the actual gridiron action - and will instead focus on the infamous "cover curse" that's been plaguing athletes since back in 1999.
The "Madden Curse" basically dictates that any professional football player featured on the cover of the game will either suffer a debilitating injury or have one of the worst years of his career statistically. What sounds like a lot of superstitious mumbo-jumbo seems all too real when perusing NFL history.
Unfortunately, EA's planned project won't spend time...

It's part joke and part urban myth, but apparently any American Football star who appears on the cover of one of Electronic Arts' John Madden series of NFL videogames, is bound to suddenly suffer either injury or poor performance. EA are now looking to turn The Madden Curse into a movie.Produced by EA Entertainment's VP Pat O'Brien, the story will apparently involve a former NFL champion who embarks on a comeback just as he finds himself on the cover of a PS3 box. He'll then need to deal with that pesky jinx. The curse, not Halle Berry's Bond girl character. It all sounds like an opportunity for some mega product placement some decent comedy allied with some head-crunching NFL action. And if the concept seems rather "high", there's at least plenty of weird evidence to suggest that, if you're an NFL star, maybe videogames are a profile enhancement too far.

One of the perks of being a big sports star besides the free blow and right to keep your job even after you commit heinous crimes, is being a poster boy for assorted products. In the age of electronics, where everyone owns a video game console, getting your face slapped on the cover of a legendary sports sim franchise is akin to having your face chiseled on Mount Rushmore (except, obviously, way more special). The biggest sports franchise in the gaming industry is undoubtedly the Madden series (from Electronic Arts), which puts the NFL in the hands of all the people too out of shape to play the sport for real.
There’s an interesting aspect to this, however and it pertains to the supposed ‘Madden Curse’. What is that, you ask? Well apparently whoever shows up on the cover of the game ends up being injured in real-life. Or in Michael Vick’s case,...

Each and every year, the Madden NFL series is one of the top selling video games. The highly realistic football simulator has been been a console staple for the better part of two decades and is the closest a gamer can get to actually being on the gridiron, both as a player or a coach. Over the decades though, while gamers took control of their favorite NFL teams virtually, the actual players on the cover of the game were getting injured in reality. This strange phenomenon became known as the Madden Curse and while it hasn't taken its toll on Madden NFL 2011 cover boy quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints (above), it still has an impressive, and eerie, track record. Several athletes have acknowledged the curse and now the company behind the Madden NFL series, Electronic Arts, are doing more than acknowledging it. They're hoping to profit from it.
