On the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Genesis", the eternally nervous Lieutenant Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) goes to sickbay insisting he has Terellian Death Syndrome. Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), finding it's a mild flu, injects him with a synthetic T-cell, activating a gene that would provide him with immunities. Unwittingly, Dr. Crusher also activates every dormant gene in Barclay's body, causing ancient, pre-evolutionary "memory" genes to activate and forcing Barclay to change species. Barclay suddenly evolves into a spider. It spreads, naturally. Nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake) evolves into an ape. Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) evolves into a protohuman. Data (Brent Spiner) evolves into a 1980 Commodore Vic-20.
That last one was a little joke. Data is fine.
"Genesis" has a lot of great makeup effects (by the show's hardworking makeup technician Michael Westmore), but the premise is a little silly, even for "Star Trek." Then again, the science in...

Lieutenant Reginald Barclay was an outlier among "Star Trek" characters. First appearing in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Hollow Pursuits", Barclay was a timid fellow, unable to converse with his co-workers and always late for his shifts in engineering. He was occasionally able to offer unique and helpful insights to engineering problems, but no one liked working with him because he was so awkward. Barclay found solace on the Enterprise's holodeck, where he recreated holographic versions of his co-workers that he could dominate or romance without consequences. When Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) discovered Barclay's proclivities -- including a sexualized holographic recreation of herself -- she informed the lieutenant that he might have some deep-seated issues that they weren't addressing in his therapy.
Barclay was an outlier because he wasn't bushy-tailed and capable all the time. Most characters on "Star Trek" have an impressive set of starship-operation skills or...

Undoubtedly, All Rise Season 3 Episode 12 is the best episode of the season so far and is one of the series' best.
The organ trafficking case allowed the two strongest female lawyers to face off and work together to catch the most significant criminal.
With "Guilt is a Bully, " many of our favorites realize that guilt is holding them back in their relationships, and the series highlights friends and couples having fun. Was nothing more yummy than seeing Wilson Bethel and J. Alex Brinson shirtless?
Organ trafficking cases are challenging to watch since there are no winners. I've watched similar cases on Law & Order: Svu and my heart went to Damien Davis and Gabriel Salas.
Amy's client, Damien, only had six months to live and was 250th on the transplant list, so he purchased the kidney. He never intended the traffickers to attack Gabriel violently when they removed the kidney.

Actor Jonathan Frakes' directorial debut on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was for the third season episode "The Offspring", the episode where Data (Brent Spiner) builds his own android daughter (Hallie Todd). One might note that Frakes' character, Commander Riker, didn't appear much in that episode. This kicked off a full-blown directorial career for Frakes that hasn't slowed since. Frakes directed eight episodes of "NextGen" in total, as well as the feature films "Star Trek: First Contact" (1996) and "Star Trek: Insurrection" (1998).
Frakes would go on to direct "Thunderbirds" and "Clockstoppers," and enter a prolific career helming episodes of high-profile TV shows like "Leverage," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Burn Notice," and "The Librarians." He also stayed within the Trek family over the years, directing episodes of "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," "Discovery," "Picard," and the notable crossover between "Strange New Worlds" and "Lower Decks." This year, for the first time ever, multiple limited series have each received two simultaneous directing Emmy nominations. These history-making programs – “Beef” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” – are both Netflix productions that have amassed 13 TV academy notices apiece, with this being one of eight categories in which they are directly facing off. While it is true that only one of this category’s previous multi-nominated series actually won, the fact that these two new shows take up a majority of their lineup’s slots might very well yield an unusual result.
Either Netflix series would bring the streaming platform its third limited program directing win, following the success of “Unorthodox” in 2020 and “The Queen’s Gambit” in 2021. Also in the running are the category’s first Hulu original movie, “Prey,” and the FX series “Fleishman is in Trouble,” which also hails from a network that has already prevailed here twice.

Fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" always got a little giddy when Brannon Braga's name appeared in an episode's writing credits. Braga became a staff writer on Tng in its fourth season, right when the show was getting great. Braga was often the one responsible for the weirder, more psychedelic episodes of the show, starting with "Identity Crisis," a 1991 episode wherein Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) transformed into an invisible alien.
Braga proceeded to write the episode wherein multiple clones of Data (Brent Spiner) took over an Old West town. He wrote the episode wherein the Enterprise was caught in a time loop and didn't notice until several go-throughs of being destroyed. He wrote the one where Riker (Jonathan Frakes) woke up in an alien asylum, convinced the Enterprise was a hallucination. He wrote the one where Barclay (Dwight Schultz) devolved into a spider and the one where Data started having nightmares.

A version of this story about “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story“ first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The Emmys won’t air for five months, but already Paris Barclay has made an impact. With his Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie nomination for Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Barclay became the first Black director to be nominated in all three narrative directing categories: limited series for “Dahmer”; drama series for “The West Wing” in 2002 and “NYPD Blue” in both 1998 and 1999; and comedy series for “Glee” in 2010, 2013 and 2014.

When it came to Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, director Carl Franklin pictured a gritty fish tank filled with yellow-green algae and lifeless fish. He wanted to reach audiences on a visceral level, placing viewers in the notorious serial killer’s putrid living room from the victim’s perspective.
“I wanted to create more of a sensory world as opposed to just a set — something that would evoke a certain aroma or a stench, let’s say, rather than aroma,” Franklin tells Rolling Stone.

Although he’s been a frequent collaborator of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, director Paris Barclay says his gut instinct, when asked to helm episodes of Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was to give it a pass. “I was alive when this was all happening in real time. I was a gay, Black man of that age. I wasn’t in Milwaukee, but nevertheless, it was scarring. He was one of those serial killers that really affected me,” Barclay tells THR. “I didn’t want to do anything that would glorify or add more ignominy to Jeffrey Dahmer. I didn’t think there was anything there for me.”
As Murphy explained to Barclay that their intent was to shift the focus away from the killer himself and onto the lives of the victims, the director reconsidered his position. “Ryan told me the story of Tony Hughes, who was this gay,...

Nick Kyrgios has been on a rampage on Twitter these past few days, and he's not stopping extending his feud with journalist Scott Barclay.
Nick Kyrgios has been very active on social media in recent days, far more than usual, as he clashed with former players, reporters, and all sorts of people over their stances and opinions. It all started with Scott Barclay, who said on Twitter that he started to dislike Kyrgios over time, even though he initially liked him.
Kyrgios responded and they went back and forth for a while. Well, we have round two, or three, not sure anymore. Barclay once again commented on Twitter that Nick Kyrgios falling out of the Top 100 on the Atp Tour will be good for him.
This'll be good for him, he'll now be able to relate to the lower ranked players he spends so much time making fun of on Twitter.

'How Many Conversations You & I Had?': Kyrgios Hits Out At Journalist After Saying He 'Dislikes Him'
Nick Kyrgios is a very active social media user, and he blasted a journalist for suggesting that he doesn't like him because of 'what he heard.'
The Australian has always been a very polarizing figure in the tennis world, and while plenty like him, plenty dislike him too. There are multiple reasons for that, but it's not different than for any regular person. He's gotten pretty used to it by now ; however, one thing that has never changed with him is his dedication to speaking his mind.
He did just that recently by responding to a journalist who said that he didn't like him. The whole interaction took place on X, formerly known as Twitter. The interaction saw journalist Scott Barclay admitting that he went from liking to disliking Kyrgios over time.
Which tennis player have you changed your opinion of dramatically over time? For me, it's Nick Kyrgios.

Paris Barclay made some television history this morning.
Scoring a nomination Wednesday for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, the seasoned director now occupies a rarified perch.
Two-time Emmy winner Barclay is the first Black director to sweep the narrative table and be nominated in the Drama, Comedy and now Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie categories.
“I’m mostly just incredibly grateful,” said Barclay to Deadline of today’s nomination for the show’s “Silenced” episode.
Grateful to the terrific writers I’ve been fortunate to work with on Emmy episodes – David Milch, Aaron Sorkin, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, and now I can add David McMillan and Janet Mock to the list.
But I’m also grateful I’ve been able to help tell stories that really matter, that really make a difference. This episode...

While it is easy to understand why audiences seek the thrills and chills of watching murderous characters on TV, it can be a bit harder to understand why creatives would put themselves through hell and back to deliver well-executed depravity that, at its best, morphs into something more poignant.
For Dominique Fishback, star of Prime Video’s “Swarm,” a pitch-black comedy about an obsessed music fan that leans into the “Killer” part of being a Killer Bee, the role of Dre was an opportunity to shirk expectations. “I was very used to playing characters who were considered lovable or likable or easier to put your arm around,” said the actress who, outside of her BAFTA Award-nominated supporting role in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” had been mostly cast as plucky teens. “I didn’t wanna get imprisoned by my own artistry or my own fears that I would disappoint anybody...

Meeting over Zoom in May, the filmmakers behind the past year’s most acclaimed episodes — including Mylod, Paris Barclay (Netflix’s Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Liz Garbus (Showtime’s Yellowjackets), Peter Hoar (HBO/Max’s The Last of Us), Karyn Kusama (Prime Video’s Dead Ringers and Yellowjackets) and Jake Schreier (Netflix’s Beef) — kept returning to the career choices that scared (and inspired) them during their hour together. [This story contains spoilers for “International Break,” the 10th episode of Ted Lasso season three.]
Ted Lasso’s title character is mostly off screen in this episode, which scattered several AFC Richmond players as they suited up for their national teams and left those at home with less to do at Nelson Road than a normal week during the club season. The show has pulled focus away from Ted and the club successfully in the past, but “International Break” felt somewhat disjointed.
Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) getting a new measure of closure with Rupert played well, and the seemingly inevitable reunion between Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley (Juno Temple) had its moments too. Nate’s (Nick Mohammed) story, on the other hand, still feels like it’s missing beats, while Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) is forced to take another setback.

It’s never a great sign when the funniest part of your romantic comedy involves the female lead’s flawless boyfriend being killed by a drunk driver in the opening scene, but in fairness to James C. Strouse’s absurd “Love Again,” this unclassifiable whatsit isn’t a traditional rom-com so much as a grief drama with a severe identity disorder.
Based on a German film called “SMS für Dich” — which sadly doesn’t mean what it sounds like — Strouse’s moribund yet almost intoxicatingly strange new movie is more or less exactly what you would expect to happen if the guy behind depressive indies like “Lonesome Jim” and “Grace Is Gone” decided to make a poppy date flick that adhered to the rhythms and logic of a Lindsay Lohan vehicle from 2006.

Jabba the Hutt defines "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi." A massive alien creature puppet made by staff who cut their teeth on "The Dark Crystal," he took "four tons of clay" to produce (per J.W. Rinzler's "The Making of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi") and was barely finished in time for the film. Puppeteer Toby Philpott called him "probably the most expensive puppet that's ever been made" in the Jabba-centric documentary "Slimy Piece of Worm-Ridden Filth." His Tatooine palace set saw the "Star Wars" production staff aiming to outdo the famous Cantina scene in "A New Hope." So garish was his environs that the production staff paid to obtain rare frogs for the set, so that Jabba could pretend to eat plastic versions of them.
To some, Jabba was an inconvenience. To others, he was an inspiration. But perhaps nobody else on set had a relationship...

As with the world of movies and TV, there are untold scores of promising video games that entered development and, for whatever reason, never actually saw the light of day. But for "Star Wars" fans, going on 15 years later, nothing hurts quite as bad as the loss of "Battlefront III" does. And we're not talking about a sequel to the version of the series that was rebooted after Disney purchased Lucasfilm. We're talking about the original "Star Wars: Battlefront III" that was scrapped by LucasArts in 2008. What hurts the most? The game was damn near finished when the plug was pulled.

For actors Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts, as well as director Paris Barclay, the critical mission with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was to shift the focus of the narrative around the serial killer away from Dahmer himself and toward his many victims, as well as the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed him to get away with his crimes.

When you bring a fictional rock band from the 1970s to life on screen, inspirations abound. Daisy Jones & The Six, a beloved novel from Taylor Jenkins Reid that has been adapted into an Amazon Prime Video limited series of the same name, is rife with nods to one of the greatest rock’n’roll eras of all time. And yet, it also seeks to carve out a space for its own identity, both in its appearance on screen and in the original music that comes from the project.
Suki Waterhouse as Karen Sirko | Lacey Terrell/Prime Video
Suki Waterhouse, who plays keyboardist Karen Sirko in Daisy Jones, had plenty to work with when it came to finding sources of inspiration. Some were obvious choices, like Fleetwood Mac’s own keyboardist Christine McVie. Others are a bit more obscure, and helped Waterhouse craft a nuanced, complex identity for her on-screen persona.

The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will announce nominations for the television categories Tuesday, January 10. Voting opened December 9 and runs through Friday, January 6. Awards will be given out Saturday, February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. For more on the film ceremony, head to IndieWire’s Awards Calendar.
The Directors Guild Awards tend to have some interesting quirks, especially when it comes to the TV and Documentary categories. Just last year, the organization filled its Drama Series category full of “Succession” episodes, proving when directors love a show, they really love it. Though the list of Documentary nominees often has crossover with the Oscars, last year was also an example of how TV-specific projects like Raoul Peck’s HBO docuseries “Exterminate All the Brutes” can break in too.

Netflix viewers have been left stunned by The Imposter, a documentary about the true story of Nicholas Barclay.
The film was originally released back in 2012 – but has found a new audience after recently being added to the streaming service’s catalogue.
Barclay went missing in San Antonio, Texas in 1994, at the age of 13. For three years, it was suspected that he had been murdered, but authorities were unable to find his body.
Three years later, in 1997, the family were informed that their son had been found, alive and well in Spain. He was flown back to the US and returned to them, stating that he had been kidnapped and was a victim of sex trafficking.
The family embraced him on his return, but concerns were raised after they sent him to a therapist.
While authorities were able to identify him through the three distinct tattoos Barclay had had at the...

Paris Barclay admits he didn’t initially want to direct episodes of Ryan Murphy’s “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
“About six months before production started, Ryan called me and said, ‘We’re doing a series and we want you to be a part of it,” Barclay tells me. “I always listen to what Ryan Murphy has to offer because it’s always interesting. Ryan said, ‘It’s a miniseries about Jeffrey Dahmer,’ and I said, ‘Oh, that’s not interesting to me.’ But then he explained he wanted to tell it from the point of view of the victims.”
Barclay directed two of the Netflix series’ 10 episodes, including one focused on Tony Hughes, a Deaf and non-vocal Black man (played by newcomer Rodney Burford) who was murdered by Dahmer (played by Evan Peters) in 1991. Shortly after the series premiered, Hughes’ mother and family members of other victims...

Ryan Murphy shut down claims that Netflix series “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” did not contact the victims’ families.
During a press event for the record-breaking series that had the biggest debut ever on the streamer, creator Murphy told attendees that the production researched the true stories behind serial killer Dahmer’s murders for over three years. Between 1978 and 1991, Dahmer killed 17 men, mostly targeting Bipoc queer males.
Murphy said that production reached out to 20 victims’ families and friends, but “not a single person responded” prior to the series airing.
“It’s something that we researched for a very long time,” Murphy said at an event for the show at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles (via The Hollywood Reporter). “And we, over the course of the three, three and a half years when we were really writing it, working on it, we reached out to 20, around 20 of the...

Disney Star has won Indian TV and digital rights to both men’s and women’s global events conducted by the International Cricket Council (Icc) from 2024 through 2027.
While the Icc did not disclose a value to the deal, it said that the “incredibly competitive” process “yielded a significant uplift to the rights fee from the previous cycle continuing the impressive growth and reach of cricket.” The rights to the previous cycle, valued at approximately 2.1 billion, were won by Star, then a Fox network, but those were for eight years and for worldwide rights, rather than India alone.
The Indian market has grown exponentially since then. Winning the Icc rights is a coup for Disney Star, which recently ceded digital rights to the lucrative Indian Premier League (Ipl) tournament to a Viacom18 consortium backed by billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani, which paid some 3 billion. Disney Star paid 3.01 billion for broadcast rights.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" recently wrapped its first — and to briefly editorialize, very good — season, while "Star Trek: Lower Decks" will premiere its third on August 25. The two shows have quickly emerged from the busy "Star Trek" marketplace as "the two good ones," with Trekkies giving both effusive praise. Perhaps in response, Paramount announced on July 23, out of San Diego Comic-Con 2022, that "Strange New Worlds" and "Lower Decks" will have an unlikely crossover episode.
Crossovers are, of course, nothing new to "Star Trek." Because "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and "Star Trek: Voyager" all took place on the same timeline, the three shows would frequently visit one another (Dr. Bashir visited the Enterprise; Worf got a job on DS9; Lt. Barclay communicated with the Voyager; these names all make sense to Trekkies). What is unusual about the "Snw"/"Ld" crossover is the former show...

U.K. performers’ union Equity is fighting back against the increasing use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) in the entertainment industry.
NDAs are intended to prevent a participant or prospective participant on a project from leaking details but there is growing concern in the industry about the extent to which they are used. Actors including Gal Gadot, Zendaya and Sophia Di Martino have said they had no idea what project they were even auditioning for when they went up for their roles in “Wonder Woman,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Loki” respectively due to the secrecy around them.
NDAs have also been used in more sinister circumstances to gag victims of harassment and abuse from speaking out about their experiences. Most famously Harvey Weinstein frequently resorted to NDAs to cover up his behavior.
Now, Equity has launched guidance to combat what they term as the “growing use of unnecessary, bullying and over-reaching NDAs across the audio-visual industry.

Some movies aren’t for everyone! Stephen King, for example, is apparently not a big fan of Michael Bay’s 2007 directorial effort,“Transformers”. On Monday, novelist Linwood Barclay took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the latest blockbuster extravaganza “Jurassic World: Dominion”. Barclay wrote, “Jurassic World Dominion has the distinction of being the first movie I’ve walked out on...

Austin, Texas — Kurt Sutter couldn’t be at the Atx TV Festival for the “Sons of Anarchy” directors panel, with Paris Barclay and Adam Arkin. But Barclay told fans that he had a surprise for them, and moments later, series creator Kurt Sutter joined the session via FaceTime to field a couple of questions and praise Arkin and Barclay as “two of the most talented guys to work behind the camera on ‘Sons’.”
Asked how he set the show’s tone in the beginning of the run, Sutter said, “I sent everyone angry emails, that pretty much set the tone for my entire career. It was trial and error, some ideas worked and some didn’t. I tried to surround myself with people who knew more than I did. I don’t think we found the rhythm of the show ’til halfway through the first season.”
