One of the biggest moments for advertisers interested in the Super Bowl isn’t actually in the Super Bowl itself.
FanDuel and YouTube are trying to make a big splash in the moments just before the Big Game, hoping that commercials in the last break before kick-off will help them make a marketing point before consumers get deluged with 30-second spots — along with celebrity cameos and pop-song surprises – once the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers start their struggling in earnest.
The price of a commercial in that pre-kick break has soared to as much as $4 million, according to two people familiar with the matter. To be sure, that’s less than the $6.5 million to $7 million CBS has sought for equivalent time in the game, but nothing to be taken lightly.
The pre-kick has plenty of appeal. “It doesn’t matter how the game does. This is the moment when everyone is tuning in,...

In a first for YouTube, the digital video giant is putting its name on a new 6,000-seat music venue opening at Hollywood Park, the sports and entertainment area in Inglewood, CA just east of Lax.
The multi-year agreement follows a similar playbook in Los Angeles and other cities. In downtown L.A., the Staples Center has been flanked by the Microsoft Theater, and in New York, Madison Square Garden’s small-scale neighbor was rebranded a few years ago by Hulu.
News of the deal for the YouTube Theater came with a list of confirmed shows starting in early September. Construction is due to be finished this summer, with an official opening planned for mid-summer.
“YouTube Theater will drive the uniqueness of YouTube by combining physical, ‘in real life’ events that bring creators and fans together, while simultaneously sharingthat same event experience with our two billion global monthly users through livestreams and VOD content,...

For the next two years, YouTube Music will be the official first presenting sponsor of the American Music Awards (AMAs), thanks to a deal YouTube Music marketing head Angela Courtin called “a natural extension of the intimate artist-fan connection that is made possible on YouTube’s global platform.”
Per a report from Variety, there aren’t many details about the partnership, but the deal does include YouTube Music being talked up as a comprehensive streaming service. A representative for Dick Clark Productions, which produces the AMAs, told Variety that YouTube will also be providing creative content for the show.
(Note: Dick Clark Productions also produces Tubefilter’s annual Streamy Awards.)
The YouTube-AMAs deal is a chance to get the awards show in front of YouTube’s massive viewerbase, and encourage more engagement from fans for whom watching, liking, and commenting are second nature, Dick Clark Productions CEO Mike Mahan told Variety.

YouTube Music inked a two-year deal to be the first presenting sponsor of the American Music Awards — positioned as the marriage of two brands all about music of the people, by the people, and for the people.
Under the deal between Google and Dick Clark Prods.’ AMAs, YouTube Music will be promoted as a go-to music platform for streaming music, videos, live performances and other content. In the U.S., ABC will broadcast the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday, Oct. 9, starting at 8 p.m. Et live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Details on what the partnership will entail are slim at this point. A rep for Dcp said the company will work with YouTube on “creative content to support the show” with more details to follow. Content will be distributed on the AMAs’ official YouTube channel at youtube.com/TheAMAs.

“The X-Files” may seem like the show that sells itself. So why did Fox market the hell out of the revitalization for 10 months? All-told, the broadcast network dropped breadcrumbs for 201 days — one day for each of the original run’s episodes — before the debut. And two days before the new launch, it dropped a UFO on popular Los Angeles outdoor shopping plaza The Grove. Fox’s Chief Marketing Officer Angela Courtin — who joined the network in July from Relativity Media — walked us through her promotion strategy for the limited-run return. The complex campaign was simplified by what Courtin...
