The Doobie Brothers’ reunion with Michael McDonald is stretching beyond their upcoming tour, as the band has confirmed they’re back in the studio working on a new album.
McDonald rejoined The Doobie Brothers for their 50th anniversary tour in 2021 (originally scheduled for ’20), which was recently expanded into this summer with Steve Winwood and Robert Cray as support. Those early concerts were the group’s first with McDonald in 25 years, and now they’re recording their first collection of new material together since 1980’s One Step Closer.

The Doobie Brothers have shared a socially distanced take on their 1972 classic, “Listen to the Music.”
The performance features Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, John McFee and John Cowan, all of whom recorded their parts from their respective homes. Without any percussion or drums, this particular rendition of “Listen to the Music” has an even breezier and lighter feel than the original. Not that it’s without any depth or complexity; McFee’s banjo and Cowan’s bass tumble and rumble beneath the guitars, and all four Doobies combine for some characteristically soaring harmonies.

Twenty-nine different men have been in the Doobie Brothers during the past 50 years, but only one of them has been there the entire time: Patrick Simmons. And while Tom Johnston may be the face of the band and Michael McDonald the one that went on to huge success outside the group, Simmons is the songwriter and singer behind some of their most famous songs, including “Black Water.” He’s also a key part of the band’s signature harmonic blend.

Tom Johnston may not be a household name, but anyone that has spent even a little time listening to classic rock radio over the past few decades knows his voice. Not only did the Doobie Brothers frontman sing lead on classics like “China Grove,” “Listen to the Music” and “Long Train Runnin,'” but he has sole songwriting credit on those songs as well. And even though he’s 71 and been at this for half a century, he still plays about 90 shows a year with the Doobies and belts the...

In May 1982, San Francisco-area band Huey Lewis and the News notched their first Top Ten pop hit with “Do You Believe in Love,” a song written by Shania Twain’s future (and now former) producer and husband, “Mutt” Lange. Taken from the group’s sophomore LP, Picture This, the song was followed by two more singles, including the energetic “Workin’ for a Livin’,” which peaked just outside the Top 40. Lewis and company would enjoy a huge commercial breakthrough with their next album, 1983’s Sports, which topped the chart and spawned four consecutive Top Ten singles,...

Exclusive: As Charles Manson gears up for his behind-bars nuptials to a young follower named Star, a February shoot has been set for long-gestating indie drama Manson Girls. Susanna Lo is directing the film about the female devotees who joined Manson’s flock in the 1960s and helped carry out brutal killings meant to start an apocalyptic race war. Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects) will portray Manson in the film, which TriCoast Worldwide boarded this month at Afm.
Rather than probe the twisted brain of Manson himself, Manson Girls will chronicle how eight young women in his brood came from diverse and even privileged backgrounds to become the most notorious female serial killers of the decade’s Love Generation. The pic will follow the girls’ pre-Manson teen years through their indoctrination into the Family and up to the bloody summer of 1969 when their violent “Helter Skelter” campaign that...

Although the actual crimes happened nearly 45 years ago, the Charles Manson murders continue to intrigue people to this day. Understanding that fact, filmmaker Susanna Lo is bringing us a film that looks at the insanity from a new angle. Prepare yourself for Manson Girls.
Based on the unimaginable events leading up to the 1969 murders performed by the Manson Family, Lo's Manson Girls tells a unique story from the perspective of the girls. "This is not Charles Manson's story. This is not Vincent Bugliosi's (Manson's prosecuting attorney who wrote Helter Skelter) story. This is the girls' story, and it predominately takes place in their earlier years from their high school days through when they start meeting each other and their life on Spahn Ranch, and it actually ends a minute before the actual Tate/Labianca murders," Manson Girls writer/director Susanna Lo said. "I felt like the murders had been represented enough,...

Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Hossack, who once had ambitions to become a law-enforcement officer, began playing the drums at age 12, according to the Doobie Brothers website. In a brief statement on the site, his bandmates said, "Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones. We will miss him greatly." As People reported in 1979, The Doobies...
