Born in Chicago but moved to California as a teenager. Took guitar lessons from Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead as a teenager. Played guitar in the band, Fox, at Bill Graham's Fillmore West. Joined the band, Crossfire, with keyboardist Mitchell Froom that worked with Norman Greenbaum (Spirit in the Sky). Played guitar in Sammy Hagar's band from 1977 to 1985. Albums with Hagar include: Musical Chairs, Street Machine, All Night Long, Danger Zone, Standing Hampton, Three Lock Box, VOA. Played guitar on Hagar songs that were included in soundtracks for Back to the Future 2, Footloose, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Heavy Metal and Vision Quest. Besides several rock videos and the MTV 1983 concert, Gary played with Sammy at Farm Aid One.
Plays guitar in the band, Boston, from 1985 to present (2024). Albums include; Third Stage, Walk On, Corporate America, Greatest Hits and Life Love and Hope. With Boston, played guitar on national anthem at the 2002 Fiesta Bowl, and a playoff game for the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.
