Lugging a baby grand piano onto a punk club stage in the ’90s was about conspicuous as bringing a baby elephant—and twice as inconvenient. But any patrons who feared that they were about to endure a Gershwin recital were soon set straight by Ben Folds, frontman and primary songwriter of Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s Ben Folds Five.
Flanked by an explosive rhythm section in the form of stickman Darren Jessee and bassist Robert Sledge (PSA: the Five are actually three), Folds earned a reputation as the Jimi Hendrix of the piano—a violent virtuoso who punished all 88 keys...

The newly reunited Ben Folds Five (i.e. my absolute favorite band for a very specific period of my freshman year at college) continued plugging away at their pretty fantastic new album The Sound of The Life of The Mind on last night's Conan, performing the album's boisterously juvenile single "Draw A Crowd" on air and its emotionally prickly opener "Erase Me" as an online bonus. Check out both songs below.

Top Chef contestants get a do-over, Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) harmonizes with Muppets and Hart of Dixie‘s Wilson Bethel finds his def flow. Plus, Squad 85, a parody police procedural, bursts onto the crime-web scene.
Neil’s Puppet Dreams | The Muppets + Nph = awesome. ‘Nuff said. If you need more convincing, here are some enticing deets. Harris’ real-life husband, David Burtka, also stars. When Neil sleeps, he dreams in puppets. Singing ensues. The whimsical tunes take a dark left turn, which leads to an oddly fun combination of toe-tapping and cringing. How awesome is New York? So awesome that we're willing to throw crumbs to podunk towns like San Diego once in a while. Sure, knock yourself out, have the world's biggest pop culture convention in the world, we'll be over here on the East Coast being awesome.
As it happens, we have our own little Comic-Con and it ain't exactly something to sneeze at. Held in the House that Graft Built (a.k.a the Jacob K. Javits Center), New York Comic-Con is a perfectly suitable alternative for those too weak and puny to make it out to Sd. If it is your first time, however, the schedule can be a little overwhelming. Luckily, I'm here to help you strategize.

The Ben Folds Five was a trio, a “bad math joke," as the namesake singer-pianist-leader once put it. They were an anomaly in the late ‘90s, a piano band in a guitar universe, playing six-chord songs in a three-chord world, writing uncool lyrics in a cool scene, lyrics about dwarves, abortion and narcolepsy. They released one masterpiece (Whatever and Ever Amen) and two pretty good albums (plus an odds-and-ends compilation) between 1995 and 1999 and then called it quits in 2000. And although many of their songs, from “Song for the Dumped” to “Battle of Who Could Care Less," described...

When it comes to Anna Kendrick, believe the buzz. The girl is all that and a bag of chips. Girl crush alert!
Chances are, you've been hearing her name a lot lately, and it's no surprise. From "What to Expect When You're Expecting" to "ParaNorman" to "End of Watch," she's had a lot of flicks make way to the cinema this year, and she's not slowing down just yet.
Her latest is the college a cappella competition movie "Pitch Perfect," in which she not only puts her acting chops on the table but also gives her vocal chords some serious exercise. With her sharp wit, self-deprecating sensibility and sheer talent, the girl's going places at lightning speed (she may even be the newest badass of the "Captain America" franchise).
So, to extol the Anna Kendrick-ness of Anna Kendrick, here are 10 reasons why she's better than you, us and just about everybody else.

Pink proved to be the mightiest of all the major artists premiering new albums this week, as "The Truth About Love" debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, beating out new releases from Carly Rae Jepsen, The Killers, Ben Folds Five and Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music crew. "Love" moved 280,000 units, topping Pink's previous personal best "M!ssundaztood," which sold 220,000 copies in its first week back in 2001. It's the pop singer's first No. 1 album on the chart, and it's also the third-biggest debut this year, after Justin Bieber's "Believe" (374,000) and Madonna's "Mdna" (359,000). Meanwhile, the Kanye West-driven G.O.O.D....

So how did Carly Rae Jepsen's new album sell on its first week in stores? Just … okay. Kiss debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, with 46,000 copies sold. That put her behind Pink's The Truth About Love (No. 1, at 280,000); Kanye and crew's Cruel Summer (No. 2 at 205, 000); and the Killers' Battle Born (No. 3 at 113,000). But she beat out Grizzly Bear and Ben Folds Five, so, small victories.

Among those familiar with the output of Ben Folds, one thing is taken for fact, which is his music has never been quite the same since parting ways with Ben Folds Five bandmates, Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee. At best, the fans I’ve encountered consider his solo work inconsistent.
Looking at his sales figures, though, no one would guess it. With Way to Normal, his second to most recent solo record, he landed his highest chart position yet, climbing all the way up to #11 in just its first week of release. Funnily enough, it also brought with it perhaps the most detractors of any of his records. Based on what I’ve heard, from friends and fellow Ben Folds fans, the consensus is it’s among his worst, if not the worst.
Then again, discrepancies between sales figures and reception are commonplace. Many would argue that there’s an...

New York — Until his epiphany in a photographer's darkroom, Ben Folds used to have nightmares about a reunion with his old group, Ben Folds Five.
Seriously. He'd dream of getting ready for a gig and being whisked away to a theater where Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee were waiting before a big crowd. He'd wake up sweating.
Those days are over, with the combustible trio of singer-songwriter and pianist Folds, bass player Sledge and drummer Jessee a unit again. Their first album since 1999, "The Sound of the Life of the Mind," is out this week and they'll be on tour this fall.
Why they broke up in the first place isn't easy to explain.
"We've never even talked about it," Folds said. "We've been asked together, but when we're asked, we all sort of look at each other because we're not sure. There's a trail of emails that can probably tell you.

It was announced earlier this year that after a 13-year hiatus, sprinkled with some one offs and an Ep over the past few years, Ben Folds Five would be headed back into the studio to record a new full length album. The album was completed back in June, and is now available for your listening pleasure.

In what has to be the ultimate five minute anti-depressant, the 90's-favorite piano rock band Ben Folds Five has teamed up with the Jim Henson Company's jolly subterranean rock dwellers for the worlds-colliding video for the song "Do It Anyway." It's the band's first track since 1999 -- once they broke up, Folds dropped the Five from the name and continued making his own records - and the video also helps mark the Fraggles 30th anniversary. Chris Hardwick, of Nerdist, helped make the video, and as he says, "If you

My friend Brett Berk went for a drive with an old crush of mine, Andrew McCarthy, in a shiny new Camaro, talking about Andrew's long gone classic Camaro. But what caught my eye was Andrew talking about learning to be alone. "I’d been with a woman for years, we had a kid together, and yet, though we’d been engaged for a number of years, I didn’t seem to want to get married. So it’s a look at my life as a travel writer, and how my experience of travel changed my life and my view of the world. And it’s an exploration of some “manly” journeys—going down the Amazon, climbing Kilimanjaro—and addressing the question, how does a solitary person come to terms with intimacy?" That's something I personally try and work on every day.

It's been 13 long years since we heard from Ben Folds Five and 25 longer years since "Fraggle Rock" went off the air. So color us excited that both are back in this new video for the first music video from Ben Folds' new album, "The Sound of the Life of the Mind," out Tuesday (Sept. 18).
Nerdist premiered the video for "Do It Anyway," which in addition to featuring a heaping helping of Fraggles, also has cameos by Anna Kendrick, Rob Corddry and Chris Hardwick.
Hardwick shares this little tidbit on how this awesome mashup came to be: "In a meeting with Lisa [Henson, CEO, The Jim Henson Company], she casually said, 'Next year is the 30th anniversary of 'Fraggle Rock.' Would you want to do anything with the Fraggles?' 'What The [expletive]?? That's an Option?!' I loudly replied. I think I scared her a little. I knew Ben had a new album releasing in...

Last we heard, Fraggle Rock was looking to make its triumphant return to pop culture via a big-screen movie a la The Muppets, with New Regency hiring Rango cowriter Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian to write a new script. However, before that happens, it looks like Jim Henson's Fraggles -- originally a television series on an early version of HBO here in the states way back in the '80s -- are inching their way back into the mainstream through other channels, like in this Ben Folds Five music video. Like the Fraggles, Ben Folds Five are also reuniting, launching a new album (The Sound of the Life of the Mind), with this video debuting the first single off said album, "Do It Anyway". Phil Hodges directs the video, which finds the main Fraggles (including Uncle...

What do you get when pop culture figures of the 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s all hang out together in one video? The answer has been revealed today on Nerdist, as misleadingly named trio Ben Folds Five has released a music video on the channel for their new single, 'Do It Anyway'. The single is the group's first in 13 years and features the 90s alt rockers in the studio along with the Fraggles (item of 80s nostalgia), Rob Corddry (most famous for his 00s Daily Show gig), Anna Kendrick (who doesn't quite fit into the point I'm making but she's cool so it's ok), and the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick (emerging star of the 10s? Chatting with singer/songwriter, pianist and drummer Ben Folds last week was life-affirming and giddiness-inducing, but also an exercise in evaluating irony. When the last Ben Folds Five album, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, came out in 1999, Folds, Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee didn’t have iPhones to tend to between songs. Twitter obviously didn’t exist yet, so interacting with fans in up to 140 characters would have been incomprehensible. Few people, much less musicians, owned laptops, and no one existed in a bubble of Wi-Fi. Buzzwords like “digital crowdsourcing” and “fan-funding” had not yet pervaded the public’s lexicon....

Last week, North Carolina passed Amendment One, which defined marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman. The constitutional amendment will now act in addition to the state's statutory prohibition against recognition of same-sex marriage.
Many celebrities have spoken out in support of same gay marriage -- and their disappointment in North Carolina -- since the amendment's passing. Musician Ben Folds, a North Carolina native, is now joining the fray. Normally, after I interview a celebrity, I somehow settle on the deluded notion that we could, one day, become best friends. This was not the case with Anna Kendrick. Not to say that the star wasn't friendly, we just didn't "get" each other. Nevertheless, that didn't stop us from discussing her role in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the consummate baby guide, "What To Expect When You're Expecting." Here, she plays Rosie, a colloquialism-spewing, food truck proprietor who ends up getting knocked up by her hunky pork-hawking competitor, played by "Gossip Girl's" Chase Crawford. (Swoon!) Moviefone (awkwardly) chatted with Kendrick about phone grettings, baby bumps, and being relieved to no longer be a part of "Twilight." Hi! How are you? [Monotone voice] So good. Good? Sorry? “The intensity of the track is typical of the rest of the album, but each song is quite different," wrote Folds. "That always was the way with our records I suppose. We’re nearly done and I think it’s a cracker.”
This will be their first album since 1999′s The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner.
Ben Folds Five is also offering up the chance for super fans to be a part of the album. Fans who download “Do It Anyway” from...

Washington -- Alec Baldwin reminded Washington journalists on Monday that he's one of the sharpest politically minded actors in Hollywood during an hourlong speech at the National Press Club. His visit was part of a lobbying blitz for Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit group that advocates for increased federal funding of the arts. But Baldwin ensured widespread coverage by also dropping some key entertainment news.
In between stories from his college years at George Washington University and his Capitol Hill internship in the late 1970s, Baldwin confirmed that he will remain on "30 Rock" through the seventh season starting next fall, although he said that season would be the NBC show's last.
Speculation swirled last week that Baldwin planned to quit "30 Rock" early when he tweeted, "I think I'm leaving NBC just in time,” after finding a crew from the network's "Today" show camped outside his Manhattan apartment. Baldwin plays...

A Twitter user claiming to be "an anonymous Lollapalooza insider" has begun leaking the supposed lineup for the 2012 fest, a move that has so angered Lolla mastermind Perry Farrell that he's hitting below the belt.
It all began earlier this month, when the @LollaLeaks account went live, promising to reveal artists confirmed to perform at Lolla 2012 (set for August 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park). Over the next few weeks, as the account's followers grew, @LollaLeaks made good on that promise, first listing mid-card acts (Awolnation, the Gaslight Anthem), and then pulling out the big guns, claiming that, in addition to a bunch of "comeback" acts (Korn, Missy Elliott, Garbage), this year's Lolla would also feature a headlining performance from none other than Beyoncé.
Then, in subsequent tweets,...

Ben Folds Five is the latest '90s band to hit the reunion trail. Best known for their 1997 album "Whatever and Ever Amen," which featured the minor hit "Brick," the band released three full-lengths in the '90s before splitting up amicably in 2000. Folds kept busy, releasing solo albums and colaborating with the likes of "High Fidelity" author Nick Hornby and spoken word guru William Shatner. Reunion rumors came true in 2008, when the three members reunited onstage in their native Chapel Hill, N.C., performing their final album, 1999's "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner," in its entirety. They recorded three songs...

Ben Folds Five have confirmed their reunion with a post on Twitter showing the band together in the studio. The singer and pianist announced on Twitter that he and bandmates Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee are currently working on a fourth Ben Folds Five album, and that fans can expect a spring release. “It’s happening fo sho – Day 1 in studio with Robert and Darren through March,” the musician wrote, adding the hashtag: #NewBenFoldsFiveRecord. The album will be the group’s first since 1999’s The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, their third studio album. Shortly following its release, the trio announced a split in 2000. Manchester, New Hampshire — Life on the campaign trail has often been compared to "Groundhog Day." Another town, another local deep-fried delicacy (or 20), another 10 stump speeches and endless rounds of hand-shaking, radio interviews and posed pictures.
But when your dad is running for president and he gives you the green light to be yourself with the press and tweet and YouTube (just about) anything you want to, well, things get a lot more interesting.
"It's been crazy. It's been so fun — a family affair," said Abby Huntsman, 25, who along with sisters Mary Anne, 26, and Liddy, 24, has been out on the road for months with former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman as he tries to break...

Not every band that makes great music is somebody's favorite band. It's one thing I liesten for whenever I spin a new artist: like, Yeah, it's good, but will this ever be somebody's favorite band? Ben Folds Five was never my favorite band, but it's obvious why they were for so many fans. Folds' voice has such a purity, and while he often bordered on precious, his narratives were entertaining, witty and sometimes very emotional. There was a bouncy chemistry to trio. He also pumped out one of my favorite kiss-off lines of all time: "Give me my money back /...

Wednesday night's "American Idol" was supposed to be all about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But leave it to Jimmy Iovine's sleepwalking producers and Nigel Lythgoe's showbiz pizzazz to make it rock softer than an Air Supply acoustic album.
That's not to say the top nine of "American Idol X: Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain" didn't give it their all and then some. This may go down as the sweatiest "Idol" episode ever. Did Idolland's air conditioning break, or is there a fire within these contestants causing them to look like James Brown on Pcp?
As an added challenge this week, producers handicapped the girls by forcing them to wear Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. collection of leopard-print diapers and silk tube-top jumpsuits. I guess they really don't want the Season 10 "Idol" to have a vagina. Paging Gloria Steinem!

There were a lot of aspects of the Ben Folds Five that made them seem like little more than a series of gimmicks. First there was the name, which was ironic because the group was only a trio. Then there was the fact that they completely jettisoned guitars from their lineup, preferring instead to center their songs around frontman Folds' incredible piano playing. Folds also wrote a lot of jokes into his songs and was sometimes self-consciously goofy (one of the key tracks from their breakout album was called "Song For the Dumped," which contained the chorus "Give me my money back, you b----/ And don't forget my black T-shirt"). But Folds was capable of delivering both pathos and beauty, and he executed that best when Ben Folds Five released their second album Whatever and Ever Amen on this day in 1997.
